CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I am like that with those space sims too. I try to play them and am like HuhWhat? end up feeling stupid and quit. The sad thing is I keep buying them too.

I think Civ V gave me a false sense of security because that game really is so easy to get into even for a total noob. I know that disgusts some people but I like it. We all have start somewhere and a game is supposed to be fun, not require reading some huge ass manual and having to figure a ton of crap out right out the gate. Civ V is really good at showing, not telling by throwing you right into the action and then giving you the advisers if you need them. I think every other simulation game could use more of that personally.

With my backlog I just don't see the point of spending a bunch of time trying to figure something out and being frustrated. There are plenty of other games. Which brings me to my next point...

I have 800 and something so quickly catching up to you Atreyuevr, but I would actually prefer you guys to stay ahead of me in the number of games you have because it makes me feel less insane.
I really wish there was a strategy game that actually TAUGHT STRATEGY. I love the idea of games like Civ and whatnot (I own Civ IV & V, and Kings Bounty, etc.) but I have no head for strategy, and it always frustrates me, because it seems like there has to be a better way to do things than the way I do them. Usually I play Civ on easy, and just steamroll my opponents, but even then I don't really feel like I know what I'm doing. I just know playing on anything higher will make me frustrated because I'll lose.

And yes, please, keep buying games. I'm at somewhere between 150 and 250 (hard to determine, since some things that seem to count as "games" are really DLC), and I like to know that I'm not the worst offender out there! :)
Blood + Sweat + Tears = Absurd Excel tracking sheet for Steam games

I've got a spreadsheet just like that! O my god, I'm not alone.
I've got a spreadsheet just like that! O my god, I'm not alone.
Nope, I've got one too. Mine is mostly just focused on keeping track of WHEN I bought it, for HOW MUCH, and what's my current running total cost/game. I have to say though, I've "only" spent ~$400 in the past 2 years, and I would spend it all again, even if I never play some of these damn things.
I've also been playing Fallout 3, which is frustrating me a bit.
I'm far too weak to get to the Radio station through the Metro station, I need a better gun. I broke into Jericho's home but couldn't find a better gun there, already have the 10mm. I guess I have to get it from Lucas Simms when he's shot by Mr. Burke, but I didn't want to let Lucas die right now.
Make sure you have changed the difficulty. It starts out on hard (I think), and is a monster to play on that difficulty. I have had the most enjoyment out of playing on Very Easy. It's hard enough for a challenge, but I don't die and have to deal with the awful save system.
I don't know how you guys can have that many games. I'm an 8 year member of Steam and have about 40 games. Add a 360 backlog of maybe 8 games and I feel like I'm never going to play it all.
Depending on what games you have, they could very well last you a long time. Personally, I have a lot of games that have relatively short playing times that can be finished in under 10 hours. Given my limited gaming time, that's fine.

Also, I have games which are pretty casual that can be picked up at any time.

I also have stuff that I've tried and didn't like, or that I got in a bundle and I never plan on playing.

I think the problem comes when you first come to a platform, whether it is a console or Steam, you see all of these great deals and you get whipped up into a frenzy. It is only later that you realize that you bought a lot of stuff that you may not get to.

I've actually spent a lot less on Steam in recent years, mostly because I have plenty of games. The vast majority of games I have on my account are because they were pretty damn cheap and looked interesting enough. To be honest, my collection probably wouldn't be so large if it weren't for indie bundles. While I have passed on quite a few, I have also bought quite a few as well.
Honestly that looks like a lot more work than I'd be willing to put in (I stopped because an Excel spreadsheet was too much work), and I'm not 100% sure it would even convey the information I want. Working with databases all day makes the prospect of managing yet another one kind of meh as well, but thanks for the suggestion.
I understand. I really don't keep up with mine as well as I should but I still love having the resource (it definitely helps you avoid buying games you already have). Also if you're one of those folks who lends games to people because you have friends in RL, it makes keeping track of that stuff easy too.

I'll try that, tks! Can I change the difficulty midgame? I don't want to get stuck in combat, the VATS system is interesting but the game shines, I think, in other parts such as exploration and interactivity. As for the save system, I can save at any time, so not a problem for me.

I have a similar spreadsheet as well. I'm going to have to redo my spreadsheet though after seeing the posted spreadsheet. I tracked my PS3 purchase which average $500 a year. Now that I'm on steam dropping $185 on the summer sale and $300 total lifetime for 130+ games. Not to shabby...now time to play my games.
What plft said. I level or even overlevel if I am having troubles with a boss. It helps loads in Ys and it is what I have been doing although I have this sinking feeling it is going to come back to bite me in the ass at the end of the game when I hit max level and can't do that anymore.
I finished Ys Origin as Yunica at level 51, what's the level cap?
Usually I play Civ on easy, and just steamroll my opponents, but even then I don't really feel like I know what I'm doing. I just know playing on anything higher will make me frustrated because I'll lose.
I often do the same just because my gaming time is limited and I want to spend it on recreation. But I just played Civ V on the easiest level and it was a bit too much of a cakewalk for me. Next time I'll have to crank it up a notch or two.

I think the hardest thing in these games is accepting both the strikes and gutters. I'll lose a single city or prized unit and immediately think "OMG reload!" instead of rolling with the punches and learning to do better.

I totally agree with this. Was playing it on the original setting and kept dying left and right. Noticed the difficulty setting and put it down to the easiest. The game became so much more enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Everybody always keeps throwing out numbers like that, but that number includes all the DLC as well. If you select it, the All Games list shows less. Then if you get it from your steam client when filtering between All Games/Favorites/Installed, the All Games shows even less than your profile. And then if you go one step further and use steamcalculator.com, it shows even less as some games are bundled (Like the SEGA Collection for the Genesis games). I'd say the most accurate one is from the "All Games" filter on your Steam client.

This is damn near my exact spreadsheet as well. Purchase date, price of transaction, # of games in transaction, name of games, with some quick calculations at the bottom.

With digital, Steam does a "good enough" job for me showing what I own and letting me filter by title. I wish there was an easier way to see owned DLC though, that is my one huge gripe about the current store and library setup.

Thanks for the heads up. This one is not for me, I don't have any of the games, but they don't like that great

That's actually a pretty fucking good bundle. I've been on the edge of buying Unepic by itself a couple times already, the extras are just gravy.

Also have been playing RF Armageddon, which is a fun 3rd person shooter for the 5 bucks I payed for it.

To be honest, even though I got a lot of games on Steam, I'm still trying to play through my GOG version of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay, which is a surprisingly pretty good game.
FO3 is set up that way. At the beginning you'll feel like you can never go anywhere but before long you'll be dominating with the best of them. Get to a friendly town and go out on small raids until you are strong enough to go out longer and further.
FO3 is set up that way. At the beginning you'll feel like you can never go anywhere but before long you'll be dominating with the best of them.
Once your skills work themselves up, you'll eventually go into VATS, line up three headshots on three super mutants using a hunting rifle, drop all three before they know what's happening and feel all sorts of awesome :D

Are you playing unmodded FO3? Honestly I think it overpowers you too quickly If you do the quests for the woman in the shop in Megaton, and Fire Ants quest that you're likely to stumble upon while heading to the radio station you will likely end up with far more guns and ammo than you need.
Would you mind explaining a bit more of it? Like what value is? I find it pretty awesome
Value is my made up number.

Value = My Rating * Hours Played

Since you can never sell Steam games, you can only get 'value' out of them by playing them. A better experience is more 'valuable' per hour.

If anyone wants it, I can post a link to an empty spreadsheet. You can then modify and use it how you like. I keep mine on my SkyDrive.

That number is still well over 500 so I still have a lot.

Once you get to that level, + or - 100 or so doesn't really seem like that big of a difference.

Well, Crusader Kings 2 is beating my ass hard. I've only played for 2 hours or so with the GoT mod, and every time I think "oh good, finally things are going my way!" it's usually when the poop hits the fan. There's just a whole lot of things to keep track of and be mindful of, because most of the time, everyone hates you and wants to stab you in the back.

Unmodded, yes. I did the supermarket mission for her so far. Should I do them all before trying to reach the radio? I'm already halfway thru the metro station, just before the first big mutant, but I'm too weak, I think I'll have to go back to Megaton.

And for everyone else thinking about this bundle, Geneforge is a really good series. In fact i've been impressed with every spiderweb software game. Don't let the graphics scare you off the graphics may be low key 2d isometric but for each game you usually get around 50-100 hours of gameplay.

That to me is the major upside of low graphics it allows one person to basically add in a ton of story and locations and game play by not focusing on bloom effects. Plus you can pretend your a time traveler from the future when playing :D

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html (The developers site, along with demo's for each of his games) Also normally the geneforge package alone is 20$ I paid 10 for it on GoG. So 4-5$ for it plus other games is a steal considering Geneforge Series I heard will last you around 300+ hours of gameplay.

I didn't realize there were so many people who had spread sheets. Here's my summer haul, in the spreadsheet.

mjpvzr.png

Also, if anyone wants a blank version of this spreadsheet, here's a link:

http://wikisend.com/download/470348/Steam Purchases blank.xlsx

It automates pretty much everything. Just enter date, name, price, and number of games. It will keep track of the total payed so far, games, and at the top, the price per game.

I think you might be taking the wrong route. Your first encounter with the super mutants should be when there are Brotherhood of Steel members around that will basically do most of the killing for you.

Well, I don't remember now if the guy is a super mutant or not, but it's a big guy in an area filled with ghouls, deep inside the metro station.

These spreadsheets are really elaborate. I have to say, isn't it annoying to put so much detail into every entry? Personally, I would feel like that obligation would take the fun out of giving Valve my money.

I admit, I have a spreadsheet to keep track of my purchases, but it's a far simpler system.
Personally, I'm proud to have a smaller number because it shows that I do have some restraint.
Restraint? What is this restraint you speak of? :D

In all seriousness, I have a lot of respect for that, I just don't have the personality for it.

I'm always like notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
OMG THAT'S SO CHEAP!

I think if I had physical boxes around it would smack me in the face and I would realize the extent of it, but I don't.

And yeah, on the spreadsheets I also think that's too much work for me. I don't want it to feel like a job. That's also why I don't mess with DRM free too much. I don't want to be fussed with having to organize and keep track of everything.

No, no, you don't understand. A complicated Excel spreadsheet is part of the metagame of buying excessive numbers of games on Steam. You wouldn't understand.

(Pfft. Screw that. I don't have no fancy spreadsheet. But I only have about 250 games, so I might not qualify as a digital hoarder just yet.)
I have been enjoying Universe Sandbox and Fallout New Vegas. Sadly I am sorta regretting buying the Stalker bundle since it seems that I just can not get into the games that much.
I've got probably 300 hours played in the Stalker series, 200 in just the first one, so I speak from vast experience.

This is an oddball game. First, grab Stalker Complete for each of the games. The Complete mods have a number of bug fixes, minor gameplay enhancements, and improved graphics/sound. Second, realize this isn't the typical arcade style FPS where you run and gun. This is a post-apocolypse, survival, everything is out to get you, death around every corner type of world that uses fairly realistic physics. Especially early on, all the guns require using iron sights in order to have any chance at all of hitting anything. You are usually given some sort of clue about impending death, don't ignore those. You are fragile and die ridiculously easy, pick your battles, and don't worry about running away. Anomolies always have some sort of audio/visual clue that changes as you come closer or activate it, make good use of the bolts to navigate dangerous areas. Don't horde. Most consumable are found regularly, use them when need, but don't carry tons of extras. Likewise, don't horde weapons and ammo, especially early, because extra weight causes your stamina to decrease faster. Artifacts are key in this game, learn how to find them early on for easy money.

The story and setting are awesome, especially if you take the time to read up on all of the little things you find. The game is awesomely rewarding, but again, it is an oddball and certainly not for everyone.

A spreadsheet is a form of control. It's like having those boxes hit you in the face.

Personally, it doesn't work, but it is cool to see the information all in one place.

The only hard part was adding the original list. Now, I just update on purchase (which takes seconds) and update it after playing (which takes seconds). It's all on SkyDrive, so it is in...THE CLOUD. Always looking over my shoulder to ensure I spend my money wisely...

This is my spreadsheet. It shows I've spent over $1000 since 2006. That's only $125 a year. It also shows I've gotten 22 cents an hour from my gaming hobby (even though I have a huge backlog).
I track time and cost and shoot for from 30 to 50 cents an hour (below 30 cents/hr will mark 'done'). I've used this to fill in data at howlongtobeat.com. It also has a macro that will generate a web page showing all my backlog with thumbnails. I often will peruse that looking for the next game to play.
I think you might be taking the wrong route. Your first encounter with the super mutants should be when there are Brotherhood of Steel members around that will basically do most of the killing for you.
Joys of open-world gaming. My first encounter was when I saw the Washington Monument off in the far distance and decided to go wandering in that direction. Before long, I was pinned down behind some rubble by a couple minigun-wielding super mutants on an overhead walkway
Is Darksiders worth $5? I saw it on Greenman gaming.
Use code COSYO-UDIDN-TGET1 to get it for $3.99. I think that code is one use per account though. I haven't played it and can't offer any advice there, but I don't see it slipping below $5 for another couple of years unless you get it as some kind of bonus with the second one. It's a good deal.

Thank you for the code. This is the first time I purchase anything from there :)
