CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Load your guns, start your engines...THE CLASSIC IS BACK! Brought to you from Remedy, renowned developers of Max Payne and Alan Wake, Remedy's Death Rally classic top down racer is back, stronger and more vicious than ever. This is no Sunday Drive. This is Death Rally, so be prepared to be blown away, literally.
Steam version works fine here. What are these issues you keep mentioning? The unofficial patch can be installed over the Steam version so I am not seeing the problem here.
My apologies. It seems the digital download version in general is known to have issues, not just Steam. I edited my post so as not to give misinformation.

Besides some of us prefer to have our games and Steam and are even willing to pay a (small) premium for it.
That doesn't surprise me. It is the Steam thread, after all. :p I don't understand it personally when there's no incentive like auto update or cloud saves, so I'd rather pay less for one I can install anywhere and I just launch it as a non-Steam game. To each his own, though.

(I really hope this doesn't incite something. Just giving my personal opinion. Buy it where you want.)

Battle vs Chess is now on Steam and 25% off ($14.99) until August 10th.

Commanders, assemble your armies! BATTLE VS. CHESS calls for an interactive feather duster, chartering the successful chess game principle into the present day multi-media world. Animated fantasy figurines assemble in magical worlds and await your command!
Genre: Strategy, Casual

No it's fine. You're certainly entitled to do what you like and I'm not going to fault someone on CAG of all places for trying to save an extra buck or two. I just wasn't sure what the issues were and in browsing the Steam forum I couldn't find anything that really pointed to problems originating specifically from the Steam version.

I know this sort of pro/anti Steam thing does tend to cause HUGE flame wars in some places though so that's why I prefer to hang out in this thread mostly.

Oh and to clarify, I would personally just rather have all my digital games attached to one or as few accounts as possible. That way if say my hard drive crashes I will know where everything is as opposed to going 'Wait? Where did I get that from again?' or forgetting about some games because they attached to the main account I use.

I know it's First World problems. :p

It's now 30% off. Not sure if it's a price mistake or not.

EDIT: Nevermind, Alan Wake purchasers get an additional 15% off for it.

The comics are great. I own the compendium and my only issue is ease of reading. I mean it's a comic and the compendium is 100s of pages in a think book and sometimes it's not the easiest to read. The hardcover books are the best because they are slightly bigger in page size, but they are also a lot more expensive. The TV show is great too, a little slow for some fans of typical zombie stuff, but again with the show and the comic the story is about the people and not the zombies.
Thanks for everyone's opinions!
So the compendium is harder to read because the page quality isn't as good, the images are smaller, or a little of both?

The first compendium contains issues 1-48 for about $35.
The books contain 12 issues for about $20 each.

Makes sense that the books are better quality, but do they justify the high premium?
Thanks again!

30% off right now. I like this genre and love Remedy, but can anyone recommend this game for $7?

Still showing as 15% for me on the web and in the client. Do you own Alan Wake or Max Payne on Steam? Maybe it's a bonus for Remedy supporters.

edit: And after I made this comment I saw your edit show up.

This looks pretty cool actually. Reading up on the battle mode I am quite intrigued. Anyone take the plunge on this sucker and can give a small review?

TQ is a really fun game. I sunk over a 100+ hours into it. If anyone is thinking about getting it I'd suggest getting TQ: Gold as Immortal Throne is a fun expansion for only $1.25 more. Also there is a dedicated site with an active community willing to give any advice or answer questions. They made the game a lot more enjoyable for me.

The quality is the same and I could certainly read it fine, but the hardcover books have bigger pages with less overall pages - so it reads easier.

The compendium has like 600 comic book sized pages stacked on top of each other, so when you open it to read it it's a bit more of a chore. If you don't mind, it is the better value and I was able to read it fine, just more of a hassle.

I second this.

This.

The next compendium (I believe through 98-99) is due out in a Sept-Oct time frame as well.

The quality is about the same. It's all in how you like it to "feel". If you don't mind the compendium sized books it's quite nice. You get what you pay for. :)

Course, lately I'm a HUGE TPB fan as opposed to singles. Marvel has started doing the fatties as well and those are pretty swanky. Right now, I'm sitting down to read some Mike Turner Soulfire.

Mass Effect 2 and Need for Speed Shift on sale @ Nuuvem for $7.39
Burnout Paradise if you missed it is $6.41
MW3 still overpriced no matter where you buy it. $34.99 if you're curious.

Do you all have Titan Quest yet? Do you? Seriously, do it. I'd say Gold is pretty much a requirement. The fan patch won't work without Immortal Throne (included in Gold) and IT adds so much more to the game for such a small cost.

If anyone is interested in joining me and my friends in playing the Underlord mod (forum here), add me on Steam. It's an overhaul mod that keeps the base game so you won't be missing out on anything. It's maybe not for everyone, but I'd definitely recommend downloading TQ Defiler (save editing/backup, bug fixes, and game tweaks) and TQ Vault (item management/backup). Both are available here.

Naw, I still have to apologize if I'm giving misinformation, so I made sure to rectify that. I'd say I'm more neutral Steam. There are things I like about it and things I don't. I do like that I can launch non-Steam games with it so it works out great.

I definitely know what you mean about multiple sources. I ended up buying the same game twice from two different sites. But yeah, definitely a big problem; so many places to save that I can't keep track.

So that mod sort of Diablo-izes TQ? Interesting.

I'm not at home to check but I think due to the moddb mods that TQ is also one of those games that Desura will grab and auto add if you let it scan your HD.
These are the games that should be 75% off on Sunday, excluding Rage of course.
Oh so that's why Quake IV isn't included with the Quake pack. I see that it's actually published by Bethesda. Which means that it won't be 75% off on Sunday.

Now I guess I gotta decide if it's worth picking up the Quake pack without Quake IV with the hopes that I can snag Q4 for $5 during the holiday sale.

A little bit, yes. It keeps the same TQ feel, though. The biggest draw for me was the revamped masteries. It adds some much needed balance and throws in extra abilities. Your character will be more powerful, but then again so will the enemies and there's a lot more of them now.

Actually, just in time for this sale, Diablo 2 Immortal has been completed. That aims to bring Diablo 2 (including its classes) into TQ, whereas Underlord is just enhancing what's already there. I have not tried D2I personally so can't recommend one way or the other.

TQ is detected by Desura, but for whatever reason Underlord cannot be downloaded through it.

During the last Winter Sale I snagged the Quake pack, which included Quake IV.
No, no, I mean say we have the exact same system, but none of the keys work. People will put giveaways up on steamgifts but once they learn that the keys don't work, they will request support to take them down. So now the steamgifts admins have to slog through all of the requests and take them down.

Now if, say, only half of the keys were functional, wouldn't that work better? Or we take the keys from the doc that got leaked and deleted by reddit and stick those in the system.
Ah, the SG admins, I follow you now.

And you may be on to something with your modification...

I have to throw in my support for Titan Quest, I've put over 400 hours into that game. Well worth it if you like 'diablo clones'.

I agree about TQ Gold, played the heck out of it several years ago when I first got it.

May even check out the mod mentioned here as soon as I finish my current run through D2 again :)

Titan Quest is great fun, never have managed to beat it (always get side tracked and by the time I get back to it I always elect to start over). But yeah lots of fun, even more so if you have a friend to play it with.
During the last Winter Sale I snagged the Quake pack, which included Quake IV.
Seriously? So they actually removed it from the Quake pack?

I downloaded the demo for Titan Quest and couldn't even get it to launch. I hate jumping through hoops to get a game to work because I have so many games to play that function properly. Pass.

Keep in mind that demos are usually made at release and never updated. Its probably 1.0 code that doesn't work with win7 etc. I've had many games have this problem and the main game runs fine.

I think it was added in only during the winter sale.

Quake IV is probably in licensing limbo. When id was independent they published that game through Activision. I'm guessing there is some negotiation etc needed on Bethesda's part now to package it and they didn't want to mess with it.

I'll always throw my undying support for a purchase of TQ Gold. If you like Diablo-style loot/kill-fests, its awesome. I beat it a few years ago, but I've always wanted to play it again. $5 is a steal for that amount of content, but definitely get TQVault. You can use it to cheat if you so desire, but I just used it for expanded storage. There's a ton of different armor/weapon sets and your bank would never be able to hold a sliver of them.

Its got nice graphics and tons of voice-over work. There's a wide variety of skill sets and playstyles. I'm really tempted to buy it again on Steam right now, but I don't have internet at the moment so it would kind of be a wasted purchase. I'm sure it'll be on sale again around Xmas.

I have Windows 7 64-bit and never had a issue, EXPECT you must quit steam and then make sure you launch Steam again right click and click Run As Administrator otherwise the game will not run and yes you have to do this each and every time you do not run Steam this way.

However, This is not a game issue as I have to do this exact same thing with Rome:Total War to get Barbium Euriopa mod to work and a few other games as well. Apparently it is a issue that was introduced with a Steam update and has yet to be fixed so this is the only work around. This same issue may be what is causing the demo to not launch as well. So sadly this is just one of those area's where Steam is very picky about how it works with 64bit and older games launching.

Edit: To make it clear using the compatibility, "Run as Administrator" checkbox is not enough you must click on the steam shortcut after quitting steam and then Right click on the launcher and click on, "Run As Administrator"

I was tempted by Titan's Quest during the Summer Sale; definitely picking up the Gold version now. I was sold when I read that it was from one of the creators of Age of Empires, even though I know it's a completely different type of game.

I haven't had to run my steam as admin but if I played a different steam game before running TQ I've had to reboot steam. Kind of annoying but easy to adapt to. Still highly recommend the game.

It anyone loved Titan Quest and wants more, or at least more from that same company should check out Grim Dawn. I just want to pre-order it to support them because, and this may be unpopular, quite frankly out of any game similar to the Diablo franchise I found TQ to be the best and on par with the Diablo franchise... sorry Torchlight. Odd, sometimes it seems like Steam troubleshooting is like a roll of dice when it comes to what step to take

Edit: Found a review that goes into the gameplay and how it compares to the old Battlechess game. fun that quick little look think I may pick it up havn't played a chess game since Gameboy.

:bouncy: That's amazing Rise of the Traid was the first FPS I ever played it was on one of those "over 600 games!" CD's I got from like Office max as a kid. Of course all 600 games were basically just demo's, In fact the only level I've ever played from RoFT is the first level.
It was of my favorites back in the day. My first FPS was good ole Wolfenstein 3D. After that Spear of Destiny, Doom, etc. Rise of the Triad came in and I had never played an fps with stranger weapons before (hand of God, Excalibat, Dark Wand, Drunk Missle, Cluster missle, firebomb, etc. Many useful objects and power-ups, like a fireproof vest, gas mask, Mercury mode (enables the player to fly!), and even a special "god" and "dog" modes, both making the player invincible for a short time (with hilarious side effects). It was also the first to feature:

panoramic skies, simulated dynamic lighting, fog, bullet holes, breakable glass walls, and level-over-level environments.

I'm pretty stoked to play a new version of the game. :D
That trailer sold me on the game. It's sad when we have come to the point where I get super excited for a fps just for the fact that it's not generic modern military crap.
Exactly, that's why games like The Darkness II, Borderlands 2, etc are a welcome addition.
Back the mid 2000's I got sick of WWII military fps (medal of honor, call of duty, battlefield 1942). Last year, Bulletstorm was a welcome release in my opinion!
I'm only half-sold. I saw what could be the wall of fire, but where was the 10 foot tall camera perspective and hand of god?
Good question, I really hope those are included, along with power ups. It would be cool if they added some new weapons and powers ups also.
Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about that too. The biggest news (as far as this thread is concerned) is that the game will be Steamworks and feature achievements and Steam Workshop support. And since it uses the highly-popular and accessible Unreal Engine 3/UEd the game has really high moddability potential! I hope more games follow suit and use Steam Workshop.
I was quite happy to hear that. I'm really hoping this remake/reboot is good I would love to see it modded! :D

I keep forgetting about that game. I remember seeing some of the early development stuff from when the former Iron Lore people started their new studio. It looked promising and I already liked their work, but I knew it was still a long ways out. Its definitely something I need to keep filed away.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Though as my luck would have it, now that I want to buy the compendium, it was just yanked off of Amazon for review. I've never seen that before.

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
According to this topic on Steam forums., Battle vs Chess may be GFWL :wall: As well as right now the game wont launch as it needs a CD-Key and Steam hasn't sent them out yet.

Oh geeze, launchFAIL

That's a perfect example of why you need to browse the Steam forums before biting on some unknown entity.

A few disgruntled people is normal but when you see an angry mob with pitchforks that's a problem.

A shame because I kind of wanted this game, though I'm not sure that I $15 wanted it.

Also, when will publishers learn with the unwanted, unnecessary forced on 3rd party DRM? I'd say they'd learn when we stop buying but the truth is they'd probably just assume there is no PC market.

Haha yah its a vicious circle, if we speak with our wallets and don't purchase games because of shit DRM, companies use that as an excuse to say PC gaming is dying. When in reality people are just sick of half ass ports and draconian DRM that punishes legit customers. And it seems like DRM is only going to get worse which makes me very sad indeed. I've held off on buying games that look great but have absurd limited activations (Anno 2070, Batman: Arkham City). Oh well not like there's a lack of games these days, if something has shit DRM, you just move on and find something else to play.

edit: Dwarfs!? is on sale at GreenManGaming for $1.87 with voucher code PCGMR-ALLIN-GREEN (25% off this weekend, not sure if this has multiple uses, so if you plan on buying something else you might want to save it), It activates on Steam. I thought it was a nifty game back when I played it, they have a demo and its a small game so I suggest you try it before buying it.

Exactly! I was like," Oh wow that looks really fun and cool little animations and effects" Then went and checked the forums

Not to mention on the store page GFWL isn't listed as being a requirement at all. So it's a hidden "bonus"

Has anyone checked out Gametap? They have an unlimited play package for $10/mo that I'm kind of tempted to try out.

Most of the games on that package are older or lower end but they do have a few suprisingly new stuff like Chains of Satinav that just came out and is $30 on Steam.

Also, they have a bunch of those not on Steam Euro-simulators like Bridge simulator, towing simulator, two farm simulators etc.

I think my main problem with getting a package of games for a monthly fee is that I will be forced to actually play the games.

Also I kind of like the idea of known that I'll just always have my game when I want it later down the road, though realistically for something like Adventure games I just play them once and then never again.

Damn they've added some pretty nice games since last I tried their service. I never did the premium monthly package but I remember using them to play some free games that would rotate on a schedule. The client they used was a bit clunky at the time but it worked and its probably (hopefully) been improved. As for being forced to actually play the games, I had the same issue with Gamefly, every time I got a new game in the mail I'd feel like I had to beat the game quickly so I could return it and get something else otherwise I would feel like I wasn't getting the most out of the service or my money for that matter.

Well, I used to have Gametap a long time ago. They had a deal if you and a friend paid for a year or something it was 30 bucks. me and my buddy did it for one or two years. NEVER USED IT. lol. well not anywhere near often enough to make it worth it. Was always lured by the sales, or the games other people were playing, etc. For a while gametap had a free service but it might be gone.

I would say if you are going to be dedicated to play them then it will be worth it. Otherwise you will just be paying to have access to something but you will never use it.

FYI, Gamersgate VOID has Airport Control Simulator for free play if you are looking to scratch an itch.
Anyone know what the deal is with games you already own if you buy the quakecon pack?
You don't get extra copies unfortunately.
I heard Titan Quest is a good game. So good that I bought it last time it was a daily and well it's sitting in the backlog .
It is a fun game if you like Diablo clones.

I still need to beat Immortal Throne eventually. However, these mods sound very cool. Diablo 2 in TQ graphics would be nice!
