CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

The DLC still comes to over $1000 and all of it is 50% off. I understand you don't need it all but still...

In the US, here in Trinidad and Tobago it was $12.50 :| Sucks right? Not to mention Fable, Batman and a couple other games aren't even sold here. I keep seeing that message, but I haven't been able to figure out what those other games were..

So far I've gotten the Doublefine Collection and the Orcs Must Die collection. I've been waiting for years to get Sins of a Solar Empire, and it's available for $10 throughout the sale. I should probably go for it. I just hate that I'll have to register for yet another online service.

Almost pulled the trigger on Arkham City, but I don't know if my PC is powerful enough to do it justice.

Anyone have thoughts on stacking, Costume Quest, and Shoot Many Robots?

Mostly tempted by Stacking and Costume Quest but I don't want to buy blindly if I can avoid it.

Is company heroes worth the $2.50? I'm not a huge fan of RTS games, even though I like Starcraft 2, guess cause I usually suck at them. But if its as good as meta critic says it is, then I'll bite and give the genre another try.

To be honest, DoubleFines are the only games I will buy blindly. They are typically unique but not long expansive quests.

I can't imagine not getting $3.74 worth out of them. I just cant.
How are the Company of Heroes expansions? Will I be fine just getting the base game?
I remember reading the first is important to have but the other expansion is necessary only if you are super into it the game. They are on sale pretty consistently, so you could always pick it up later.
How are the Company of Heroes expansions? Will I be fine just getting the base game?
They're definitely worth it. There's a new faction to play (the british) and some new units. Also, a load of extra campaign levels. The single player of CoH is well worth it.

For that price I suggest you try it. It still is one of my favourite RTS games. It might be a bit tricky to learn but if I remember correctly the SP campaign will ease you through the workings of the game.
Get the Unstoppable" expansion. It's not on sale but it will make you wet yourself, I kid you not.

Nothing for me today. Well, so far.

The only things I'm really looking for now are:

King's Bounty series (have Armored Princess but need the rest)
Blood Bowl
Mass Effect 2
Avernum (if the price is really low)
Disciples 3 (still hoping this drops down more)
How are the Company of Heroes expansions? Will I be fine just getting the base game?
The base game is fantastic, the expansions make the experience even better.

When the sale started I put everything I really wanted in my wishlist - now I have about 10 games left in there I'm hoping to pick up.

I'm not holding my breath though, as most of them are EA. The Sims 3, Spore, and Dragon Age. Fingers crossed though!

Waiting for Kings bounty as well, hope it will at least make a flash sale. And Avernum is amazing. Though start with 5. I started with 4 and had to force myself through it. Now I am on 5 and it is like night and day better now I know people love Avernum so much. As well as the story to 4 is useless and is recapped in 5.

Edit: 4 was fun and I sunk like 100 hours into it; but If I knew now how much better 5 was I would have just skipped to it.

I've been wanting the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition for under $15.00 for a while (I already own both on the 360.) I imagine that's just asking too much, but I'd like to experience the game again on PC.

I know people rag on Railworks but I personally am glad for its existence even though its not my genre. It shows that even a niche out there can be supported and surely those diehards are funding other things either games I buy or steam as a whole. I understand as a gamer with wide ranging taste, it seems a little odd spending that kinda scratch on something. But when I think of it from the other perspective, train aaficionados I kinda get it. What else do they have to fill the void? Models? A grown man with $1k worth of train models (and likely a "train room" to match) has a certain sadness to it. $1k simulator hidden on a hard drive, easier to keep to yourself.

Like I said, a hat for every head. I'm all for it. Make a $1k lawn mowing simulator if the market demands it.

Amazon had Dragon Age Ultimate and Dragon Age 2 bundled last month for $10.

It's definitely possible.

To those wondering about Company of Heroes, yes, yes you do want to pick this game up.

The original comes with America and Wehrmacht and Opposing Fronts comes with other factions: British and Panzer Elite. All of the factions play pretty differently so get them all. Tales of Valor has some horde style coop/MP modes and a nice little SP campaign but isn't really that important so if you're on a tight budget, just pick up the original and OF.

The game itself is a lot of fun. There is so much depth to it but its pretty easy to understand. Its a lot of fun playing with friends (not sure how active the online is though so playing with randoms might be iffy). The game still looks pretty good and is IMO one of the best RTS games of all time.

Stacking and Costume Quest are both excellent. Stacking is a puzzle/adventure game, while Costume Quest is a simplified Japanese-style RPG. They both have unique settings and interesting characters, and are a lot of fun to play.

Well I kind of hate to break the running joke, but FWIW as I understand it, almost no one buys every single piece of DLC.

I think as gamers most of us are trained (by greedy publishers!) to feel like we simply must have every single piece of DLC or we just don't have the complete experience but that's not really the case for this game. It's basically a get the base and get what you like and then maybe every so often look for another one etc sort of thing.

I know a lot of us have this nagging 'but, but, there's DLC that I don't own...MUST...HAVE...IT...' and unfortunately I am prone to that too but that's not the way you do it with Railworks.

That's not to say that the DLC is cheap, I still think it's expensive outside of the odd sale. It's just that almost nobody spends $1k+ on it.

I would say that's a hidden gem. I got it around the time it came out and had a lot of fun with it. It's published by Tripwire too (the Killing Floor and Red Orchestra guys) and they've done some fun stuff with it.

If you're not hung up on Steam, it's currently on sale from Impulse for $8.99

Also, Amazon has had a DA:O Ultimate+DA2 pack for $9.99 a couple times in the last few months. That doesn't require any client or launcher which is nice.

It's not THAT sad (Like I said, I don't even like trains so I have no hidden train room!)

But people typically spend a lot of $$$ on their hobbies - I myself have a gaming room that easily surpasses $1,000 in value.

OK, bought GTA IV complete and Batman Arkham City. Now all I need is for steam to stop all sales so that I don't spend anymore money. Think you can do that, Steam?

Well, you're right, somebody outside of our "realm" isnt likely to go "gotta catch 'em all" but they are going to get whatever fill they can possibly want. And thats awesome.

And who's to say they DON"T acquire at least MOST of it at some time or another? Think about some of the hardcore here and how they collect specific genres etc. If you're into trains and it's the best game in town, youre whole spending is likely to go towards it.

I bet Ill spend at least a grand this year on gaming (I'm tempted to say during this sale but more likely between this and the winter sale) As I have various tastes, its all over the map. But if I didn't, bring on the 1890 Steamer Steel Continental Express baby!

And a service called "steam" just has to carry the top Train sim in the land. It just has to.

I'm kind of on the fence about Costume Quest, as well. It sounds like a good time, based on all the CAG reviews, but I'm still not completely sure. Any additional info, particularly in regards to battle system, expansiveness of environments, etc., would help me decide.

This is an optional quest.

The King's Bounty series is worth SO many hours of fun that I'd recommend it at just about any price. It's addicting.

I got the entire series for $2.50 on Amazon. Steam won't beat that, but if it flashes, grab it. If you're a fan of the genre you'll love it.

As the saying goes "one man's trash is another man's treasure". While it might not look interesting to us it may certainly be for a few others.

This is my first Steam sale and I'm really enjoying it. I've been following the thread since day one of this summer sale and read a lot of tips, recommendations, and entertaining commentary. I would like to thank the fellow CAGs for helping me save $ on this sale...

I'm not judging myself (I am in no place to do so) but lets look at it from a societal standpoint.
What's going to be more "understandable" to the general public:

a media room, replete with PCs, games, likely other similar interests (Blu rays, music, the like)

or

a train room. Replete with faux trees, canyons, people, water features, and tons and tons of toy (or if you prefer "hobby") trains.

???

I'm into some really weird shiit myself so I can't judge but Im smart enough to have that stuff off site, in an underground bunker, far away from friends, family, and most importantly, the ladies.;)

(Coconut Queen memorabilia palace FTW!!!)

I highly recommend the game. You can probably run through the game in about 5 hours, maybe a little longer if you want to get all the achievements. As expected of Double Fine, you'll find yourself smirking/giggling at the jokes. Despite the art style, the game is not for kids because it's a bit hard in the beginning (a couple 1v3 battles). But it doesn't make you start from the beginning if you lose, it let's you replay the battle. It's old school RPG and the QTEs just give you extra damage or defense (it's balanced in a way, that you want to have as many successful QTEs as possible). Sometimes, not too often, a missed QTE can mean death for a character. Basically, one team takes turns attacking. On the map/level, it's not random encounter, you see the monster, and you can decide to engage, surprise attack from the back, or just pass by altogether. There are stamps you can equip a character that either boosts an attribute or grants a skill. The puzzles are pokemon type (think TMs), where you need a certain costume skill to advance/unlock something in the level.

Yeah, very few EA games have gone on sale thus far. Off the top of my head, there was Alice Madness Returns, the two Dead Space games & the Crysis franchise. I have prioritized EA games because I feel that it's likely that they will eventually pull their games from the Steam store. Perhaps not over the next few months, but eventually they will decide that they need to have exclusive rights to their games to make Origin irresistible to people who have been resisting using it thus far.

My EA shopping list is as follows:
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 + DLC
Battlefield 2: Complete Collection
Crysis 2 Maximum Edition (passed on it because it's still too expensive and i already own the vanilla version on Amazon)
Medal of Honor
Medal of Honor: Airborne
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed: SHIFT
Shift 2 Unleashed
SimCity 4
Sims Medieval

I'm not completely averse to using Origin, but I'd rather have these games on Steam if I can. Plus most of these games either can be registered on Origin using the key that I get from my steam copy, or I soon will be able to do so

My goodness, I liked Railworks better when it was a running gag, like Bat Rats with excessive amounts of expensive DLC. Talking about train rooms and people actively buying Railsworks 3 makes me wonder what the CAG Community is coming to.

Remember, Bat Rats is only $1.50!

While it is a great game to joke about because of the DLC. It's one of the best train simulators in english for people who are actually into it. Even though I'm not into simulators for the most part, it's really tempting to get a small costing pack + the halloween DLC just to see what it's like.

Yeah, it's only a joke because of the DLC. People have it in their head that you need to spend $2000+ to get the full game, but as Motoki already said, almost nobody has all the DLC. Most people pick and choose a couple of DLC of stuff that they're interested in and then stop.

FWIW, Steam Sim City 4 does not have a key and cannot be (easily) registered on Origin, though you may be able to find a sympathetic CSR to manually add it for you.

On Sims Medieval, the expansion has been completely yanked off of Steam for quite some time now and as I understand it, a non-Steam version of the expansion will not work with the Steam base game. It sucks, but that's EA for you. If you want the complete Sims Medieval you may want to get it elsewhere or just pass on it entirely.

Oh thanks for the head's up on Sims Medieval. Unless they put it on sale for some crazy discount (& given that we're talking about EA here, what are the chances of that?) I think I'll have to pass.
