CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
Ive spent close to $150 so far. I'm about to pass the 200 game mark in my library. I've played about 50 and beat maybe 10 of them in the last 2 years. I think I'm addicted to buying cheap games then never playing them. Help.
You're on the wrong website for help with that problem, buddy. ;)
After seeing the deal up, I checked my library to see if I had any of the Bit Trip games because I was sure I got it in an Indie Bundle, sure enough I did.

So I started playing it. Third level in, and I'd probably describe it as charming, frustrating 'old skool' gaming, complete with sexy NES-like gaming shallowness.

Again, third level in.

It gets lots of love from everyone (or at least it did when it came out). Bit Trip Beat was okay - it has a clever twist on the Arkanoid gameplay and ties it in with the rhythm genre.

Bit Trip Runner just ticked me off. If you like exact, unforgiving, running and jumping then you may be in heaven. It takes platforming gameplay and mashes it together with a rhythm game. I didn't find it fun at all.

Google some video on the game first. The bundle doesn't look like that great of a deal to me, to be honest. I'm not a soundtrack collector and the games are worth a couple of bucks each at the most. Okay, well maybe not Runner.
Thanks for the input. Overly harsh and unforgiving precision jumping is indeed giving me pause (I'm not very good at it). Maybe I'll sleep on it.

I voted for The Longest Journey even though it came bundled with this Dreamfall GOTY that also has a soundtrack CD and book. I bought 3-1/2 years ago and is still in its unopened box. (What's a box? Ask your parents, kids.) Odd to see that it's $28.99 there now when I got it for $6.95.
You're on the wrong website for help with that problem, buddy. ;)
No kidding. I have not played one game ONE game I bought during summer sale yet.
And Im well over the triple digits in $ and double digits in number (triples easy if you count DLCs, soundtracks, packs and the like)

At one point I found a peaceful calm because I had finally filled the last unfilled grid page on my list. What I got wasn't mattering so much as it was there and brought friends.

In 2042 when you get around to that part of your backlog, would you tell me if the books any good?

Some of us have to consider leaving Steam account info in their will so their son/daughter can complete the backlog, because backlog would be literally impossible to complete in one lifetime.

Just went ahead and bought Stalker...not sure when I will have the time to play it, but I own it now. How come Gray Matter has never been released for Steam?

I know this was probably already asked at one point, but does anyone have any opinions about Tiny Big?? Also Im so bummed! I wanted to get Simcity 4 but I was at work and got busy so I forgot to buy it on my phone!!!

The patterns supportive of that. Winner now. Losers later on.

I know it wont make you feel any better but Ive plugged myself into the matrix and still managed to miss Alice, Prince of Persias, and a couple other ones I was stalking.

We may see a repeat later on. Keep hope alive.

Tiny big is tough as its just a little too rich for my blood for what it is (and Id have to get the soundtrack b/c Im insane.)

$5 flat all out and Id do it. But then $5 is a magical number, mucho crapo can see the inner sanctum that is my library when it says the "Im $5" password

Found a nude mod for Fable III and Coconut Queen, think its time to go to bed.
I know the guy was exaggerating at least some for hits but that fable 3 thing was scary. Is it THAT bad (and worse, no real improvement from the earleir)
It's not THAT bad. It's over simplified and only adds some token new features (evolving weapons for instance). The story is also insanely short. I still enjoyed it (got it for $30 a few weeks after launch on Black Friday; Xbox 360 btw).
Still holding out for a Command and Conquer deal. I will buy the whole damn pack!!!!!

Its not the Steam gods you need to be praying to, its the EA shareholders.

And they arent taking requests these days if ya didn't know.

I dont want to say Ive STOPPED caring about money but with the overabundance of cheap yet great titles to play, its much lower on the list than in the past.

The time angle intrigues me though. Short, if its same ol, same ol, is actually better.

But answer me this, would you put it in a top 100? Does it even rank on the "if I never had experienced it Id be missing XYZ" list?

I think Ive had too many average game experiences at the cost of GREAT game experiences. Must balance the scales!

Well, it's subjective. The Fable games are great, and if 1 and 2 weren't as great as they were, 3 probably would have still been a title that turned heads. Unfortunately, marginally better graphics don't make the previous games in the series disappear.

In the end, it's a good game. Top 100? Probably not. You can get a lot of amazing games for $5 these days. I'd recommend it for $5-$7, but probably not $10 unless you're a big Fable fan. I still put 20+ hours into it and had a lot of fun (hell, me and my girlfriend played together on XBL and got married and had a baby), it just isn't a game I don't really come back to.

Then again, I don't even play new games that I'm buying now...
Any thoughts on Wizorb vs Shatter?
haven't played wizorb, but i have played shatter on my ps3. it's by far the best brick breaking game.... of all time. and no, i don't say that lightly.

of course, i haven't played wizorb, but i'd be very surprised if it's better than shatter.

God damnit... i just got turned over to Steam in the Japanese Niche thread. The Carpe Fulgar set won me over. Im very anti DLC only games, but for so cheap i couldn't pass. Especially since theres no retail version of them. If i understand how steam works right, it actually seems like some of these games are less DRM filled than some console games these days o_O As a collector i still require a physical copy for most of my stuff, but these prices are friggin crazy and great for small indie games and niche developers. Seriously, i never knew how ridiculously low these get. Makes the xbox and PS3 summer sales look like a joke.

It looks like i missed out on some good deals. Like Y's Origins. I notice in the OP that it says games may come back on the last day. Do they bring them all back or just some? Im wondering if i can get it again for 5 bucks some other time

*edit* figured id ask here.. anyone know if my system would run dragon age origins ultimate edition? That price is hard to pass up. Im on an old backup system since my laptop died. Its an old AMD64 4000+, winxp, 2 gigs of ram, and a ATI Raedon 9800XT 256MB graphic card. The specs on the page say it requires a ATI Radeon X850 256MB. I looked online and from what i can tell i think my card is the series right before the X850 (stupid graphic card numbering systems are confusing) Anyone know if ill be able to run it on this old thing? It still may be worth getting if i cant for whenver i put together a new computer or just get another laptop. Hopefully someone knows in the next hour or so before i crash. I gotta decide if im buying it or not.

I did hear the PC version was better than the console ones that i played. I guess its much more strategic. Oh, I was advised to double check on most things even if the page seems to indicate it has none: Dragon age does NOT have any DRM with it does it? Someone mentioned in another thread that they removed it in a recent patch. I just wanted to double check. The page seems to indicate its safe.
one of the dlc for dragon age is amazing.(awakening). the others are very short(one of them is a golem, shale, one is a return to a previous area to wrap up storyline, but awakening is definitely worth the extra $2.50
i love shale's story. by far my fav character in DAO. Though i played it on the ps3... which was still awesome, but not as awesome. Can't believe they destroyed the franchise with 2.

Shale was AWESOME. Before i gave up on the game because they never patched the console versions Dex bug i was really enjoying playing with her. I used the dog and Shale. Quite a combo ;P I saw a friend playing 2 and it looked like a regular action game honestly. Frankly Bioware has been going to complete crap since EA bought them out. Mass Effect 1 was their last great game in my opinion. Theyve been watering their games down for the Call of Duty crowd more and more with each release. They'll probably just make a straight FPS with some dialog tree choices soon. *sigh* I miss the Bioware that made great games like KOTOR, and Jade Empire, and Mass effect 1 =(

I'm SO proud of myself this sale. I've had tons of games in my cart... but I've only pulled the trigger for around $5 total.

How did I accomplish this? Because every time I debated getting something, I switched to library view and remembered I haven't played almost any of the games from last year's summer sale. Or the various indie bundles. Not to mention the ridiculous IOS, PSN, PSP, and PS3 backlogs.

If I dedicated myself to gaming 24/7, I'd probably have several years worth of games at this point. I no longer know what I have, nor what some of the games even are.

Go figure.

DA2 felt like a regular action game to me, for sure. I only got a couple chapters in... I didn't like the characters, I disliked the combat, and I felt like i was being tunnel'd through the game. Maybe it got better, but from what i've read, not really. I ended up selling it before it dropped in value. Meanwhile, I still have my DAO.

I've been trying to do something similar with some success, if a game reaches the $2-5 range I try to take the games age into account as well. Because after a certain point the older games tend not to go on sale as often.

Generally the last day is a repeat of the best selling deals... the problem is the introduction of flash sales and community voted sales have included a number of repeats as well so I'm not sure if we still get a recap sale day.

As for DA:O, eek that's an extremely old computer, not sure if it would run properly. I personally would try to hold out for an Amazon sale on the bundle, I've see DA:O (ultimate edition) +DA2 go on sale for $10, granted they don't activate on steam but, that might be the better deal, and give you time to get a new computer. That being said I dont know when or if it will go on sale on Amazon again, I'd like to think it will but who knows.

I'm nonplussed by Wizorb because it's soooo boring compared to Shatter. :cold:
It was only wildly disappointing in that it was only really related to Dragon Age: Origins (and your created character from that) in the fact that it existed in the same universe and made the very slight of adjustments to the story based on your actions in the first. Also, a couple characters from the original make a reapperance (not the popular ones, mind you).

It also ended in a cliffhanger that merely left you feeling like, 'okay, where is the rest of the story?' and reused a lot of maps sending you through the same locations over and over.

But overall, it is still a finely polished RPG for the most part, and definetly a great adventure overall. Dragon Age: Origins was still leagues better, and the DLCs (and mods) available for it will easily amuse you for 100+ hours of amazing engrossing story.
Thanks for your opinion, Necrotron. I'd like to add my two cents and say I disagree though (we can do that without calling each other trolls, right?)

I absolutely loved Dragon Age: Origins (bought the ultimate edition, played through everything including DLC and Awakening). I bought DA2 as well and knew what I was getting into, so it's not like I had high hopes or anything...

...and yet my relatively low hopes were still dashed. I found the story engaging for the first 2/3 of the game, but the gameplay was incredibly watered down and I truly despised going to the same place over and over and over (and over) again in the main game.

However, in my opinion, the worst injustice lay in the story and characters. I won't spoil anything, but it was hard for me to find any single character I liked, and honestly, I felt that I had little influence on their actions by the end. I felt many of them acted out of character as well, and after beating the game, I wanted all my time back.

Oh well, the character interactions in zones were really good though!

Voted Longest Journey because out of the three it is the only one I might pull the trigger on.

Dragon Age Origins ultimate is also worth it. If your going to get the game you really might as well get the ultimate version. $2.50 more, gets you at least 20 hours+ more gameplay.

Also Recettear is a great game if your on the fence about it. Can't comment on the other two but when I picked that game up a couple winter sales back I put 30 hours into it before I knew what had happened.

Well, it had to be The Longest Journey, since I own the other two, but after what was said last night about the game (and the high rating) I might actually buy this one.

Puzzle Agent 2, btw, isn't as good as the first game.

I hope this time The Longest Journey wins...
It's been on the summer voting sale on GoG before, but even with 60% off, the price was still higher than when it goes on sale on Steam.

My hopes to see 75% off Beyond Good and Evil are diminishing everyday with these Flash deals... If it gets 75% on Steam, it'd way more cheaper than when it goes on sale on GoG.

Grabbed Recettear and Chantelise, those along with the two YS games are definitely giving me some old school RPG games to get through!
Still waiting for Far Cry 2, Jade Empire and Beyond Good & Evil.

Any opinions on Tiny & Big? Is it worth the $6?
Looks like a future indie bundle game to me.

Actually I thought the story and characters were the strongest parts of DA2. I mean, when you take that away, what's left? The same 10 places or so that you visit to complete the main and side quests? The horribly repetitive combat that substitutes throwing waves of enemies at you and button-mashing for anything resembling tactical complexity or planned encounters? DA2 was disappointing on pretty much every level as a follow-up to DA:O but one thing BioWare's always been good at is storytelling.

Meanwhile, any opinions on the DC Universe pack? I'm tempted by it but really only for the Flash content. Incidentally, how has no one made a "Flash flash" sale crack yet? Is everyone sleeping?!

Kinda shocked at that flash vote but Puzzle Agent is going to win because it's telltale sadly.

I will literally shit my pants if The Longest Journey or The Next Big Thing Wins (I voted for The Longest Journey).
Voted for Longest.

I really want to play The Next Big Thing, but even at 75% off that price is too rich for my blood. Those Pendulo adventures are beautiful and well-written, but super short. Can't justify 7.50 on it.
Well it's European made so I think to them adventure games = a still viable genre worth at least $30 US retail (see also The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav) whereas to us in the US it's like 'WOT? $5? That's outrageous! It should be 99 cents or in a bundle!'.

I exaggerate a bit but you get the idea. ;)

And I did vote Longest Journey even though it kind of irks me that this is the sort of game that was 75% off for the entire duration of the sale past sales. Not sure I like this whole flash things. It gives the illusion of more deals but really it seems to be either more repeats or deals that would have otherwise been for the duration of the sale now being offered for a much shorter time.

The Longest Journey is a great game don't get me wrong, but it's old as dirt and needs to be just a flat 75% for the whole sale imho.
Thanks for the rundown, appreciated. I've still got to play through Origins before I even consider the sequel, but good to hear some level headed discussion.
I'm sorry if my previously expressed opinions about Dragon Age 2 did not come across as level headed. I realiz I didn't launch into a huge bulleted list of all the genuine problems I had with the game and why I feel it's inferior but that is probably because I did that whole thing many, many times in the past at the Bioware forum and I am just mentally exhausted from wasting energy on this imho inferior game.

Truth be told I think it's a medicore game but a horrendous Dragon Age game. If it were called something else it wouldn't have gotten as much negative feedback but I also think it's fairly forgettable and uninspiring.

There are many other points I could go on about. The reusing of the areas, consolization, humor and writing that (for me) tries way too hard, the lack of true consequences for the choices, the fact that nothing ever changed over the whole 10 year span, abrupt ending, the mostly entire lack of following up on the main Dragon Age story outside of cameos just for show etc etc, but those below me probably explain it all better.

Having said that, if someone really must have that game then go for it. Just realize you won't get it on Steam and if you go in expecting anything along the lines of DA1 you will be disappointed.

:applause: Thank you. Very much agree with you both.

Maybe I missed it in the OP, but did Demigod show up in a flash/community sale? I saw people in the group buy thread getting 4-packs and wondering if it had dropped lower than 50% off.
