CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Maybe I missed it in the OP, but did Demigod show up in a flash/community sale? I saw people in the group buy thread getting 4-packs and wondering if it had dropped lower than 50% off.
No, it hasn't been on any further sale yet.
Is Fable 3 anything like Kingdoms of Amalur? I haven't played a lot of RPGs.
I think the combat is similar but KoA is much more open world.

I think I lasted in DA2 about a half hour longer after I bumped into the blood mage dude who had mysteriously recovered from taking an arrow through his throat in Awakenings. Between that and the shoe-horning in of Flemeth, I was feeling more annoyed than connected to the previous game.

Hmm. Thinking of getting it but I'm just not sure. The Metacritic blurbs sound pretty positive, they say it's worse than the previous Fables but I've never played those. I felt the story, dialogue, and characters of Amalur were boring as hell.

I think that I looked into Fable 3 last year and decided against it. I think I bought Witcher 2 instead, which I haven't played yet. I started Witcher 2 but it was hard to get into and learn everything so I moved on to other new games I had at the time.
Between that and the shoe-horning in of Flemeth, I was feeling more annoyed than connected to the previous game.
Well, I killed Flemeth in DA:O, but apparently it's not possible to actually kill her or something so that's why she turns up in DA2. I guess. I should email Drew Karpyshyn and ask him about this.
I think the combat is similar but KoA is much more open world.
How open world is KoA? Does it just have a ton of side-quests, plus the usual linear? Idk, I had a friend of mine told me about it and the way he put it was that there was only one real way to go in the story. (Which is the way the first Fable, which I played on the Xbox.)

If you've not played the original Fable, I definitely think that's worth a go-through. The reviews on III were mixed and 2 was never ported to PC. You could save $10 and just pick up the first game a la carte.

Watching the Gametrailers video, it looks pretty good. I like the idea of choices with consequences. And it sounds like there's a ton of sidequests and exploration. I don't mind if it's not as complex an RPG as some others, I like something accessible. I thought the side quests in Amalur were mostly horrible and boring.

I felt like world interaction in Fable was better and that NPCs felt more lively with better voice acting. I also liked the story the way it was hashed out in Fable 3 better than KoA.

However

KoA Reckoning was superior to Fable 3. The combat, the choices, the armor, the weapons, the size of the world, the enemies, etc. I had so much more fun playing KoA than I did Fable 3 that I don't get the desire to own Fable 3 unless it is dirt cheap. The story in KoA is really good but was told poorly and the voices were mediocre. Halfway through you'll still want to know where the story goes and who the characters are and how the game will conclude. What they did right at 38 studios was making the DLC content stories and voices better than the original game. KoA if you can get it will be a game you finish and play again. Fable 3 will probably upset you (or corrupt your gamesaves like it did mine). For what it's worth, I went out to BB during this sale and got KoA on PC for $15 knowing full well I'd have to activate it on Origin. If "Teeth of Naros" DLC goes on sale for even a second, I'm getting it.

I've missed the past 12 hours of comments. If you like Baldur's Gate, GET DA:O! Well, no, they're not quite the same but for the PC it's the closest thing. I hated the game before it came out because of Bioware (EA?)'s bizarre marketing, but the game is good. Real good.

Well, I liked Amalur but it's been so long since I played Fable: TLC it would be hard for me to draw any kind of analogy. I will say that people definitely respond to your choices in Fable, as you will be showered with greetings if you play a heroic figure and shunned if you play a dastardly character and you can get married, buy a house and do lots of other interesting things.

I don't feel I would ever play KoA again, I couldn't even finish it due to the repetitive nature and I felt the story and dialogue were in the toilet, I got totally burned out on it even when I started ignoring all the side quests.

I guess I'll pass on Fable 3... I like the Gametrailers review but I don't need the game right now and it'll probably be on sale again. I still have Witcher 2 to eventually try to get into again, among other games. I am tempted, though. Thanks for the tips, everyone.

You know, I think the biggest problem with the story in KoA was not that it was bad but that the side quest chains were SO LONG that it was easy to simply forget things that were major parts of the main story when you were off completing faction quests. Well, that and the fact that you could actually achieve maximum status with diametrically-opposed groups with seemingly no consequences (Warsworn and Travellers).
I see that there's a DLC pack for DC Universe Online available. If I buy it on PC would it carry over the PS3 version?
No. Nothing is cross-platform for DCUO--not even characters.
No. Nothing is cross-platform for DCUO--not even characters.
Damn, I keep reading that the PC version is pretty broken. Hmm ... I really wanted to get into this game ... ARGH! Decisions, decisions.

I think this bundle came with something called Lost Chapters. Something that is originally 9.99 down to 2.50. Same thing? I think if I don't buy it I'll regret passing up the opportunity, I'm gonna just put it in my inventory and then do more research later.

Ok I bought it. I don't know if Witcher 2 is anything similar to this or KoA but I don't think I'll be trying Witcher 2 again any time soon and I'm pretty much done with KoA and Skyrim for the foreseeable future. Again, I don't know if those games are similar to Fable, they're just the only RPGs I've played aside from Fallout.

I may live to regret this!!! Impulse purchase!

See above. :) It's the "director's cut" of the first game. It's really quite good. Fable 3 on the other hand is what happens when streamlining gets out of hand. I'm not like the people on forums who whinge when the slightest change for accessibility is made, but damn, it gets a bit silly. It's not terribad or anything, but it's generally considered the low point of the series. Well, until that awful-looking Kinect game comes out.

I would lean more toward accessibility vs how Witcher 2 kinda throws you into this complicated system with an inadequate (in my opinion) tutorial section. I don't know, hopefully I don't find it too streamlined! Just like the look of that Gametrailers review and this is a fairly cheap price.

Thanks again for the info guys. Gotta get going!

Man I really really hope Prototype and one of the older Call of Duty's hits $5 on a sale, though I'm seriously doubting that's gonna happen considering they're only 25% off right now.

Having never played it, I will wait til Fable 3 has a 2.49 or 4.99 price point. Loved the original game on the Xbox, so picked up Lost Chapters for 2.49, but hearing all this stuff about fable 3 is turning me off to anything but a ~4.99 buy

So I was looking over the screenshots for the longest journey is it just me or do her arms look freakishly long?

Maybe it's because how skinny the rest of her body and shoulders are but really has a weird alien vibe to me. /shrug

It's because her top is too short and her pants are too high. It makes her torso look shorter than it is, which makes her arms look out of proportion. They should be close enough, though. Standing up, arms by side, your fingertips should go beyond the crotch by a few inches. Dat 90s fashion sense, coming back to bite us again.

I've done really well holding off on SC4 and DA:O. I already have them on Origin, but damn if there isn't that devil on my shoulder whispering to have them on Steam too. If nothing good pops up today, I'll grab Saints Row 3 from Amazon.

Also, everyone buy The Longest Journey. One of the greatest adventure games of all time.

Yes. I've been eyeing the series for years but haven't gotten around to playing it. Every time I've looked it up during that time I've been pretty put off by the character design.

I'll concede that the side quests they sent you on were massive, but to me that was just them trying to make an MMO world in an action RPG. To me what hurt the story was that the characters seemed stagnant and I'd read their dialogue and skip it in order to speed up conversation. But what really irked me about the story was at the end where

you are fighting through with the lead female dark elf character (I forget her name) but as you're fighting the audio from the battle is overtaking her telling you your backstory and how you got to where you are. Are you telling me one more 5 minute dialogue scene was too much? I couldn't even hear her talking until the enemies were dead.

Anyway, long story short I liked the DLC stories better and loved the gameplay in KoA. Two cents inserted. Two pennies not worth the metal they are printed on.

Ya, amazing how something so slight can throw your entire perception off. Now that I go back and visualize it I can see what you mean though.

Should be around 6$ or so for the pack, Definatly picking it up been stocking up on adventure games. This sale got Syberia 1-2 and Still life 1-2 so once im done with Gemini Rue I know what to play next.

Also does anyone else have any good adventure game recommendations that are on sale?

So, I've heard a lot of people complain about Funcom not doing another Longest Journey game, and it doesn't seem like they're going to be anytime soon. Does Dreamfall end in a cliffhanger I'm unlikely to get a resolution to in the near future?

Last shot: Fable 3 is not a particularly good game but I had some fun with it. It's beautiful and has some nice open world nonsense to it.
Im waiting on a mass effect franchise deal, but seems it wont happen at all =/
Amazon seems to be selling them (ME1/ME2 - ME3 is Origin only) for $10 all the time. IIRC, that's what it's been on Steam, too. I bought ME1 for $10 a couple of Christmases back and they put it on for $5 a couple weeks later. D'oh! My friend gave me his ME2 that came from his Dragons Age buy, so that was that. I've beaten them all on Xbox, so I'm not sure why I'm redoing them on PC.

Ben There, Dan That/Time Gentleman, Please! double pack is my recommendation. Both are really great, sharply written and funny p&c adventure games. Some of the puzzles are difficult, but it's worth it for the writing. There's even a surprising amount of dialogue for different item combinations.

We have 4 days left counting today, so probably 3 more days of new dailies/flash sales. Don't lose hope yet.

No EA game activates on Steam.

Can I get an invite to the CAG group on steamgifts.com please?

Also,

I've never played any of the Total War games.

Any games you can compare to the series?

Which ones would you recommend?

Or, is the mega pack filled with enough to warrant the purchase for someone new to the series?

If ya'll could throw votes toward Dead Island, I'd appreciate it. My brother gave me a list of Steam Games he wants for his birthday... after a ton of them already went on sale, of course. DI included.

Will definitely get that before the end of the sale I mean it is only a $1 and it has dinosaurs and not just any dinosaurs but NAZI DINOSAURS! :whee:

P.S I knew if I waited E.Y.E would become $2.50 \o/
