CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Why are smaller games only given 8 hours while big games are given 36 hours under your system?

Doesn't seem fair
Because smaller games won't get the traffic larger or more well known ones do. The Syberia series will sell a small portion that Batman or Skyrim would sell in the same daily spot. So rather than not having it on sale at all, why not move it to the flash sales? That's my point. Jade Empire will likely not be going on a daily deal anytime soon in a big sale because it's too old for the spot. As of now, that means it gets the nominal discount and nothing else. Why not give it a spot for several hours, without having to lose a daily spot to it? I'm arguing for games that otherwise wouldn't get a deal to get one, and therefore get more sales and more revenue. I'm not sure how that's a bad thing.

As an example: I would love to buy the game Fuel. The chances of it being a daily deal are non-existant because it's too old and at this point obscure. So, rather than being lost amid thousands of other on sale items, why not give it 4-8 hours as a flash deal? A lot of games could benefit from the exposure they wouldn't otherwise be likely to get.
Not everyone is glued to their PC and/or mobile device hanging on every deal like we are. The repetition is more or less like an encore day but spread out. If sales are going to be offered for a limited window I would personally rather they be offered more than once just in case or others who want them happen to miss it the first go round.
Repetition by itself isn't bad, but the amount of repetition we've had is a little much at times, in my opinion. RAGE, Batman, Dead Island, Skyrim and probably others have all been on sale 3 times now, correct? That seems like rather a lot.
Really disappointed with Capcom during this sale. It's their right whether or not they choose to put their games on sale, but I was really hoping for sales on SF x Tekken and the new RE game, among others. I wouldn't need much of a discount on SF x Tekken in particular, just not going to pay $50 for it.
Capcom has always been chintzy with their sales historically. Actually, this is the best they have ever done so far I believe since SSF4 went $10 and even cheaper $7.50 per w/ a 4 pack. Maybe they are slowly coming around to the logic of sales. It seems like they sold a lot of SSF4 when it was on sale so hopefully they will do more sales during the Winter sale.
You just complained about the repetition of the flash sales then proceeded to express regret on missing a flash deal.

Think about that for a minute.

I can see why you'd parse that as hypocritical  Really, though, I expected to miss some of these deals; that's the nature of sales, and I'm expecting some last-day encores anyway.

However, some of these games have been Flash/Daily/Community deals more than twice in different categories. Fable III Collection and Batman Franchise have been all three, and L.A. Noire has been a Daily, Community, and now has a shot at being a Community again. That's a little ridiculous.

I didn't mind the repetition....I'd rather have some flash deals that repeat than being stuck with just 9 daily deals or whatever it is. The flash deals kept people coming back, along with the vote. What they did was better than just doing 9 daily deals even with the repeats......bottom line.
Zero reason to double dip on Sideway. The framerate is capped to 30 FPS on PC so the performance is about the same. I've played through both versions to 100% completion and don't see any reason to have both.

EDIT: Actually, the PS3 version is a bit more stable. It crashed a few times for me on nearly all of the boss fights in the PC version.
Thanks, you just saved me $3 :) Appreciate it!

...Tomorrow is the last day of the sale.

And there will still be community votes and flash deals until tomorrow at 1PM.

This isn't a zero-sum game, though, it doesn't have to be this way or none at all. I'm not saying they can't also use the flash sales for repeats, I'm saying you can use the good concept of a flash sale in other ways too.
Today is technically the last day of the sale. All prices end in 25 hours...
There will be new things on sale for another 25 hours, and a day is 24 hours long, so...that means tomorrow is the last day of the sale.

And you still have to vote tonight/tomorrow to complete your Steam badge, so there you go.
Kingdoms Of Amalur being one of them.
Maybe if enough of us say that to the universe it will happen?

Seriously though, I really wish someone could have found the person(s) currently responsible for deciding whether or not the 38 Studios self published Steam version of Amalur could go on sale and let them know that might actually sell relatively well with a promoted sale and the creditors could get a good chunk of their money back without EA coming in and stealing their insane 70% cut off of the top.

10AM PST tomorrow is the end of the sale, yes. You have until then to pick up anything else you may want.
Lol this is a good idea ;D
It's how I've voted on 95% of this. Unfortunately or fortunately, I already have 95% of the community stuff.
Lol, who cares when it ends. Far as I'm concerned a 'sale' never started. Worst excuse of a SS to date.
What were you hoping for, 95% off everything? Over the course of the sale, some of my highlights include:

75%+ off: Super Street Fighter 4, Dead Rising, GalCiv2, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Alan Wake Franchise, Alice, NFS Hot Pursuit, NFS Shift 1+2, Toy Soldiers, Dungeon Defenders + DLC, Doublefine Collection, Thief Collection, Fallout series, Dragon Age, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Fable Collection, Blades of Time

That doesn't even touch other big names/recent releases that got great discounts like Batman, Walking Dead, Crysis 2, Quantum Conundrum, ARMA2, and Max Payne.

Am I disappointed by how the flash sales were handled? Yes, it's frustrating seeing so many repeats, and they may have done better with only 3 flash sales running at a time. Unfortunately the publishers have to agree to be part of the flash sales, and I imagine it took a huge amount of effort to coordinate all the additional sales going on, plus there is only a limited pool of games to choose from that Valve has the publisher's blessing to discount in a certain fashion.

Edit: The sad realization for my wallet that I picked up about 80% of those lists.
Hmm, you can try to give it a second chance and install the TSLRCM Mod for kotor 2.;) It's a restauration mod which uses the unused material left on the discs by Obsidian (Hey, you, Lucasarts, I hate you forever for this mess).

Personally, Kotor 2 (yes, this messed unfinished release) > Kotor 1.
Kreia, best character forever. :bouncy:
Hmm, I checked all the DD stores and no one has KOTOR 2. I'm kind of thinking of getting that new KOTOR I & II retail box re-release just for KOTOR 2 and then using the mod you linked above. I hate to double dip on KOTOR I though and $20 is a bit steep so I suppose I should wait for a sale and/or potential DD re-release.

Trying the Evoc Mercenary DEMO.

I really liked Freelancer and X3: Reunion + Terran Conflict.
How come I can't seem to get into Evoc Merc DEMO?

I can't help but wonder legally how the rights are going to get handled. Hell, you even have all the assets (source code, art assets, engine) for Amalur and Copernicus that have to go to someone. What a mess.

I thought the sale was great too, but being on this site has allowed me to pick up heavily discounted games from other DD services along with Steam since January that I wouldn't have known about. I can't fault Valve because I own like 300+ games going into the sale. And like you said its up to the Developers to set the max discount. I still picked up some hidden gems that I would've never have found; looking at you Coconut Queen.
has anybody run into problems trying to play ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead? I keep getting error messages just trying to launch the game
Please don't be offended if some of the suggestions seem obvious, just trying to make sure I touch upon any possible issues:

1. Do you have ARMA II installed? I think it requires at the very least the free version of ARMA II to run.

2. What folders are each game installed to? I got my ARMA IIs from Amazon, but each game was a separate DL and OA would not run unless it was installed to the same folder as ARMA II and the installer itself didn't install to the same folder by default which was very strange. I assume Steam would handle this for you so that shouldn't be an issue, but you never know.

The whole thing is just a huge, huge mess. The game sold something like 3.5 million copies which for 98% of games would be considered a success. The problem is for a small start up studio that hadn't even produced a single game prior to the Amalur release they hired too many people and expanded way too quickly. Then they also spent an obscene amount of money to get 'names' like RA Salvatore and Todd McFarlane attached to the game and on top of that they made a devil's bargain to give EA 70% of their profits.

It seems like a decent enough game for what it is, but had they taken a more conservative development approach there is no doubt it my mind they could have made it for significantly less than the $30 million plus it cost them. For one thing, just taking RA Salvatore and Todd McFarlane out of the picture takes a good chunk of that budget off right there.

I think the problem with this game and 38 Studios in general is that the whole thing is basically some fans who talked big and sort of had some name recognition with Curt Schilling and some contacts that managed to get them funding but they had no business sense whatsoever and no one was willing to tell the Emperor he had no clothes.

/38 Studios fiasco rant
Where is it $10 on best buy? Did I miss a sale?
It's $40 retail (even the PC version) @ BB then they are currently running a $30 off coupon in their July @Gamer magazine. If you aren't a subscriber you should be able to pick it up in the store for $5 but some people have reported certain stores didn't have the magazine, at least as of last weekend. Not sure at this point.

Also check the inventory online for your local BB stores as it's been reported that some have run out of their Amalur copies.

The worst part I think about 38 studios is they told their employees who relocated they would buy and sell their houses from them in order to get them to relocate. and even told the employees ,"Hey we sold your house!" Only to now after the closure and bankruptcy these same employees are being called by the bank after losing their jobs telling them their house was never sold in the first place and they now owe the mortgage and late payments on it =(

Wow that's sad. I bet EA is getting every penny they were owed though even if the employees and the taxpayers of Rhode Island got screwed. They are still getting most of the profits for this game too, Steam version aside, and that is probably why we are seeing a big push for sales on this game everywhere but Steam.

Because they are dicks about Valve and Steam and jealous of its success they didn't want any part of this game being on Steam* and now we are stuck probably never getting another sale on it.

*(edit: before anyone flips out on me this is an opinion. I don't know the specifics that went down but I know EA and Valve have been having a rocky relationship no matter how much both try to PR spin it otherwise.)

Oh wow that's a lot of games for $5. Even if some are bleh there's bound to be at least a couple of good ones. Interpol looks like a halfway decent adventure game. Tempted...

Thanks for posting that. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

*Edit: Okay bought. That didn't take long. I had some Bing reward points saved up that I redeemed for a $2.50 Amazon GC so it cost me $2.50 for 20 games. That works.

99.9% sure thats the same Interpol game thats been on xbox live DotW a couple times in the last whatever amount of time. I'd say definitely get it in the Amazon pack, always better on PC over console. The controls and graphics would be far superior. Besides, the console one probably doesn't even run at 720, whereas I'm sure the PC version can handle that sweet, sweet 1080.

EDIT: I havn't slept yet and to be up in an hour or 2...I'm thinking I'm gonna take the sunasun gamble and roll some dice to see how I should handle this.

Oh man, a single store has a 360 copy of Amalur available, and a couple have PC copies. I'm actually a little torn on this, since I don't remember how big a difference there was between the two versions. Any thoughts guys?
