CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I haven't had a chance to play either Agric or Farm Simulators yet, but I do want to if just to try them. The price is always too high for me on them (I'll pay like 4-5 bucks TOPS for something like that). Reading some reviews on Amazon it seems Agricultural Sim might be the slightly better of the two but these types of games don't have much of an end game I don't think so unless you really like driving a slow tractor or something I don't know how much fun you'd have playing it. It has other sim aspects I think like having animals and farm workers you manage, but again, these games don't usually excel in game play.
I wouldn't really be expecting a lot. When you have 3 boys 6 and under - its fun just to watch there reactions to things. So, it would only need to hold my interest a little since it is for my sons reactions.
My guess would be Friday the 21st, and run thru Jan 1st or 2nd. Sooooo 150ish days. Plenty of time to get crackin on that backlog.

Plug in your ID, play the game it tells you. :D
Anyone have a site that can tell you on average how long a game will take to complete? I would love to start knocking out my backlog and I thought I would focus on games that are shorter...
Also as Binary Domain will prolly go on sale again at some point either Steam or Amazon. 5 hours into the game and it is my top underrated game of 2012 already. This game is more fun than it has any right too and with as deep as a story as Ghost in the shell. And way more fun than gear of anything. This game is a steal if you get on sale for 10$ or have it backlogged already ;)

Only sad thing is how wrong the mainstream journalists were about this game, and now with only 20k copies first month there is little to no chance of a sequel I hear. I just can not get over how much fun the game is, went in thinking it'll be fun to kill time with and now have a new favorite game :D
I grabbed it from Amazon for $10 and went in thinking the same thing. The game is great and didn't get anywhere close to the amount of love it deserved. It is really sad it will likely never see a sequel.
So now I really really want to buy Street Cleaning Simulator and from that picture I also see FORKLIFT Simulator!! :whee: What better way to spend your free time then stacking boxes with a forklift!
Shenmue was kind of like a forklift simulator :p

On making a Coconut Queen-like game

Hi, just some minor updates.

I came up with a more entertaining storyline.

I’ve been investigating costs and logistics for developing for tablets instead of desktops.

I’ve been looking at development platforms, and programmers. Sadly, I cannot hire anyone out of pocket.

I know someone who can help establish a Kickstarter campaign, but the numbers don’t look good. Celebrities and high-profile properties can break the $10,000 barrier, but Coconut Queen (and Andy Megowan, for that matter) are neither.

So I’m sorry, but it’s not currently looking good.

Aww man.

He's probably right but it's still disappointing. As much as everyone thinks Kickstarter is the solution to every developer's woe's, you really need a 'name' to pull it off. I think a lot of people don't realize that since the Kickstarter successes are highly publicized while the failures are not at all.
Amazon is going to have it on sale again (Binary Domain) for $9.99 on July 28th, 2012. Their doing an encore sale with a few other deals. I have 2 questions about BD - does it have sniper feature/gun? And could you possibly play the entire game using only a sniper rifle?
Well sort of, In the game each squad member has a default weapon which you can upgrade, The main characters is a assault rifle. However! You can also pick up a sniper rifle as your secondary and in theory I guess exclusively use it. Though really you'll get the most enjoyment out of the assualt rifle. Mainily as all you fight is robots and you can destroy each part of the robot. So your aiming and blowing arms and legs off of a robot.

Destroying the legs make them start to crawl after. Target their and arms you can blow gun arm off and watch them bend over to trying pick up the gun with their other hand. And if you blow off their head they'll go haywire and shoot other robots. But really for me what makes the game amazing is the great set pieces and also the boss fights. Tons and tons of huge huge robots you get to destroy.

Imagine like if Ghost in the shell, was a Micheal Bay action movie. Tons of robots, tons of deep "what is life" questions and lots explosions and huge robot boss fights. For being a Japanese "Gears of War" clone it easily beats Gears for me just because it has tons of colors, funny squad members you can pick to form a team with, and also a much deeper storyline and I am only half way through the game at the moment.

But for 9.99 it's a steal infact after just playing the Darkness 2, I'd say it ranks above that even. I mean it is not a perfect game as it is a third person shooter but it has a unique charm, and soul and personality you just do not see that often. and it is only getting better the further I get in the game.

Ya it's one of those games that really makes you rethink trusting a "professional reviewer" and also one of the best parts of being a CAG discovering some hidden gem that was overlooked.

This is truth. It's a great game and something you do not see often at all.

Reminder: close to the ending of the various giveaways in my signature.

I'm considering sleeping a bit before sending out winner notifications and whatnot.

I just finished Episode 1 of The Walking Dead game this evening. Took me about 2.5 hours. It's been great so far, and I'm interested in replaying it after finishing the whole game to see how my choices actually affect the storyline.

DayZ is what I've been playing a lot of, though. Now if I could find the time to play any of my other purchases...

Final tally is 42 games and 27 DLC's for $145. It's the first time since the 2010 Winter Sale that I bought more than a game or two. Aside from Saints Row I stayed away from games I already have on PS3.

The list wouldn't paste over from my Steam account properly so I'm not going to bother with editing all the DLC in. I hope everyone got a bunch of games they wanted.

Fallout New Vegas Ultimate
Driver: San Francisco - Deluxe Edition
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Fallout 3 - Game of the Year

I believe you can have up to three save files on Walking Dead so nothing stops you from getting a head start on the different scenarios.

This actually sounds pretty awesome and I know MysterD loved the game too. Usually I play FPS, but Sniper Elite is a TPS and is pretty awesome so I'm looking for something equally satisfying.
Think of your entries statisctically. It will probably take a little over a thousand to win something because most of my entries have around that amount of contestants

26 entries? HA!

I'm on 78. A lot of people go hundreds and hundreds without winnings. You have to imagine that if enter one with 1000 entries then you have a 1/1000 chance, or 0.1%. Keep going it at.

I got my first win within a month, then nothing for 3 months. So yeah, giveaways in the double digits and no win isn't surprising.

Also, buying something that is rockbottom cheap and giving it away will get you in to all the super low contributor giveaways. The difference between a non-contributor giveaway and a $.01 giveaway can be huge. You can also troll the forums, lots of people just post keys, or do puzzles, which if difficult, will mean if you solve it, and giveaway with remarkably good odds. Or sit in various chatrooms and play ninja and hope you can input a key faster than others.

You obviously are not well acquainted with Steamgifts. Some of us have been entering for AGES and never won. It took me over 1200 entries to win.

The odds are not good unless you get in on some group giveaways sometimes. Do check the number of entries on a contest. If it's 1,000 or more honest you might as well not bother. I used to but I stopped because the chance is just so damned small. I only enter group or contributer giveaways now.
I was being part sarcastic and part whiny.:) But I was only entering stuff I might've wanted and had low entries in the below 500 range. Oh well.

Now I'm debating whether to really play CQ since it's in my gift inventory. I bought it before the sale ended....just in case.... :whistle2:\"

I guess I missed out on the Coconut Queen fad. Hope the people who won my giveaways enjoy their games!

I started up DayZ. It's got a tough learning curve. It feels like STALKER in a way.
Well according to this Theory(http://zumaworld.blogspot.com/2011/09/last-name-effect-interesting-theory.html) If your last name is with a letter that is further back alphabetically it is your names fault :D
Some brief nerding: I didn't read their paper (though I'm tempted to go check it out now), but by the description, they didn't control for how and when the students would receive the email. Perhaps all they verified was that people whose last names start with later alphabet letters check their email more frequently. It also didn't say how many students were part of the study.

My last name starts with a 'Z' and I only bought Frozen Synapse Red DLC. I almost bought Monkey Island Special Edition but I held off thinking that it would be available at the end of the sale and that if I still wanted it then that I would buy it.

SPEAKING OF FROZEN SYNAPSE!! Anyone up for a game? PM me with your FS screenname and we'll get a game going. I'm still pretty terrible at it, but it's tons of fun.

anyone regret not buying something? or for that matter regret buying?

For me I regret buying crusader kings II, tried playing it and the txt is so f'ing small I can't read it so I gave up on it and moved onto other games in my collection
Reminder: close to the ending of the various giveaways in my signature.

stop posting giveaways that us unwashed can't participate in :(
seriously though, please keep those in your steam group page.

Thanks for sharing, Motoki. Coconut Queen really deserves better than this. I know it started as a joke and all, but if you look past all the "feminine" elements, you actually have an above average game in my opinion (I don't know if my opinion really counts though, because I don't usually play games like this).

I don't know if you guys have read this one yet, but I thought it was a pretty interesting read:

http://megowan.wordpress.com/2012/02/25/how-coconut-queen-2-will-be-made/

Also, this isn't pertaining to Coconut Queen, but...

Even more amazingly, the Indie Fund recouped their $55,000 investment in Dear Esther–which is not only not even a game, but is also a remake of a free product–in under six hours.

Dear Esther is a remake of a free game? A remake of what?

My final haul is 17 games
Pixel junk Eden $2
Legend of Grimlock $6
Jade Empire (shoulda waited) $7.50
YS Origins $7.50
Indie Bundle V (for YS: The Oath of Felghana & Gemini Rue) $10
Civ 5 - Asia DLC $ .75
The Walking Dead $15
Crusader Kings 2 (for the Game of Thrones MOD!) $10
Binding of Isaac + DLC $2
The Longest Journey $2.50
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy $2.50
Vampire: The Masquerade $5
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion $6.24
Dear Esther $2.50
for exactly $80. I bought a lot more then I was expecting but I got a lot of games that I'm looking forward to.
You are probably right. I think there is some weird thing about a game being extremely rarely on sale that makes me want it more. I fell into the Jade Empire trap for that same reason.

There's also the fear that it will be yanked as there have been several games I wanted, but never got before they got yanked. In those cases too though honestly if they weren't yanked they would probably either be backlogged forever or I would never get around to buying them.

It's some stupid psychological thing that makes little rational sense, I admit it. :p
You are speaking of commodity theory. And yes, like much within behavioral economics, it explains irrational purchasing decisions:

Commodity theory (Brock, 1968) deals with the psychological effects of scarcity. According to the theory, scarcity enhances the value (or desirability) of anything that can be possessed, is useful to its possessor, and is transferable from one person to another.

In his book Influence, Cialdini writes about how toy manufacturers limit the supply of toys around the holiday season so parents will double-dip, first buying a substitute toy when the desired toy cannot be located during the holiday season, and second some months later when the toy is again available.
Dear Esther is a remake of a free game? A remake of what?
there's an old source mod out there someplace that you could probably find without too much hard work. It's not as pretty, but from what I understand, it's the same experience.

As for Binary Domain, fantastic. Robots break in an awesome matter, and each boss is unique. Pacing is pretty good as well once you get past tutorial island. which isn't an island. it's more like a road at the beginning. and some other stuff. I liked it.

And anyone able to compare jade empire to kotor? as in similar combat and gameplay, but different story and setting? or is it more action oriented?

This reminds me that Valve hired an economists not long ago. I wonder if he influenced how the summer sale was set up to help study the buying habits of valve's customers.

It's been a while since I have played either so I can't provide many details, but jade empire is much more action oriented. The kotor combat allows you to choose your target, but you don't really do the attacking (i.e., you don't pick each individual blaster shot or saber swing). If I remember correctly, you also have to do quite a bit of controlling of your party members.

Jade empire plays like a mix of an RPG and a simple fighting game. You have different moves and fighting styles and you can chain punches, kicks and special attacks into combos. Most (all?) of the time you only have the single character.

I really liked them both, and I think that they both have great stories, but they play differently. Kotor is more about tactics, while jade empire can be a lot of button-mashing and trying to figure out an enemy's weakness.

If it was $5, then oh god yes. If it's like $10-15 then probably not. I was eyeing that simulator bundle with 18 wheels of steel, but $15 was way too much for crap.
Imagine like if Ghost in the shell, was a Micheal Bay action movie.
This sounds kind of amazing. And the game was never on my radar! Now I want it. It'll be on my list for the next sale...
Where in kotor it's more of a pause and assign tactics RPG.
I just started playing kotor last night and while it took a little while to get used to the random pauses in the fighting, the game - considering I'm not even a star wars fan - has been pretty fun so far.
So I just noticed in the bottom right there is a Oil Platform Simulator!. Is Europe like the home of simulator games or something?
That shelf right there is the biggest game store in all of Europe. They don't bother wasting retail space on kiddie games like Fallout or Call of Duty. If it isn't a sim, it just isn't hardcore enough for Europe.
