CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Gee that sucks.

How do you pay for stuff on steam? If you use a credit card, is it possible that your CC is registered with a bank outside of the country that you live in? If so, that might be the problem. A couple of days ago I had a guy try to buy stuff for my off of steam in Spain to take advantage of some regional pricing differences. Turns out his CC is with a US bank and he was in Spain, so they locked his account down on him.

Hopefully it turns out to be something as simple as that.

I use a credit card, but it's registered here in the US. It worked fine until the last day of the sale, then nothing. Tried using different cards, the website, mobile app, and desktop client, but all gave the same message. In the future I think I'll just load up my account with Steam credit. Maybe that will circumvent suspicion.
I can relate to that. One good thing of digital download is the wife never know how many games I am stocking!
My wife actually encourages it.
Cheap entertainment for the whole family.
My account says I have seventy, but then again I just started. :D (I had 8 games before the sale.

^ We are way more interested and impressed in this spreadsheet then we should be.

Its finally sinking in (personally) that CAG isn't a site for cheap ass gamers, but those that like to collect cheap games and than mantain, manage, and organized those collections, spending way more time and interest doing so instead of actually playing games.
We're not cheap ass gamers at all, we're thrifty digital hoarders. :applause:
Personally, I'm proud to have a smaller number because it shows that I do have some restraint.

Restraint? What is this restraint you speak of? :D

In all seriousness, I have a lot of respect for that, I just don't have the personality for it.

I'm always like notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
OMG THAT'S SO CHEAP!

I think if I had physical boxes around it would smack me in the face and I would realize the extent of it, but I don't.

And yeah, on the spreadsheets I also think that's too much work for me. I don't want it to feel like a job. That's also why I don't mess with DRM free too much. I don't want to be fussed with having to organize and keep track of everything.
Here's my spreadsheet:

Games: Alot
Money Spent: Too much
Lol... Don't say I didn't warn you. ;)
I should of listened to you and the others who warned me. I ended up buying the GOTY edition- which I completely regret. The game has way too much content in its base package. I didn't need all the extra maps/civilization/scenarios. I was hoping to catch up on some sleep I lost during the summer sale, and this game is making that impossible.
Burnout Paradise is absolutely amazing. Also, since you've come to it late, you might not know it's history, but Criterion proved itself to be an amazing developer.

They released massive content patch after massive content patch for free (at least on PS3). Including, but not limited to: trophy patch once trophies became possible, 'night' patch, which allowed day/night cycle, cycle patch, which added motorcycles, and plenty more.

They also listened to the fan base, patching in stuff like allowing you to easily restart a race (rather than a more 'open world' where you ended the race whereever you were, and had to drive back... interesting, but frustrating).

They eventually charged for some DLC, but by the time they'd did that, they'd already patched in so much content for free that I was more than happy to shell over the $. Definitely a gold standard for a modern day dev.
Burnout Paradise was awesome. Criterion was great until they teamed up with EA and produced NFS:Hot Pursuit. That was a steaming pile of poop.
Since experiencing what its like to join a steam summer sale for the 1st time, im constantly visiting the steam store even though they are now only doing daily deals! sheeesh!
That's how it starts. But the deals just don't come fast enough. So then you start looking around. Visiting Amazon and GreenMan. Eventually you find yourself in the back alley behind GetGamesGo looking for deals on Tow Truck Simulator just to experience that 50% off sensation.

On the subject of short games Vs longer games...

I actually prefer a shorter game, I mean, it's not like I am going to pay full price for it, no matter how long the game lasts.

Need for Speed: The Run and Hydrophobia are both short games, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age are not. Guess which two I have played?

It's not like I don't WANT to play Fallout 3 and all of those other great RPGs, but I know before I start that I am looking into putting anywhere from 40-100 hours into the game, and while that gives great value for money (dollar per hour ratio) for that amount of time, I can go through my backlog and play (and complete) who knows?

6? 8? 10?

decent length games in the same amount of time, and I would feel like I have achieved something at the end of the day (like making a small dent in the backlog)

I could make an argument either way. Sure, DA:O was longer than some games. But, if it's a great experience, then isn't 50+ hours of entertaining game time its own reward whether it's all in one game or split up between two or more games?
So rating is your own "score" of the game?

Also do post it :D
Yes, rating is my score (1-10), either after spending some time playing it, or after actually completing it.

I will clean it up and post it later. Too busy at work.

Eh, it's not that bad. It gives you more options to try out. Plus you will have them if you end up wanting to play multiplayer with someone else who has the DLC. It's was only a few dollars difference. Also, you didn't buy Jade Empire at $7.50 then have it go $3.75 the next day.

I totally did that this morning. Only having a couple of games on sale on Steam made me need more of a sale fix so then I went to Gamersgate and Greenman and Gamestop and Gamefly and then I ended up at GetGames and saw that $4.99 sailboat simulator.

Coconut Queen is so silly. The phrases the brawny men say when they go to work for you are great. "I don't need to eat lunch. I'd rather work for you." or whatever crack me up. I rolled my eyes when the Queen wasn't from the island but a white woman from Colorado flown in. Escapist fantasy for sure.

Oh, and no fruits yet. What's up with that?

Anyone have the problem of full screen only being a small rectangle in the middle of the screen? Was going to pop over to the Steam forums but I know a lot of people who are currently playing it in here.

You know, a sailing sim just doesn't do much for me. The power of the wind can't compete with the power of machinery and an engine. But who knows, if it ever drops to $2.49 then it might be added to the collection.

As far as the short vs. long game distinction, I prefer short. I mean when I hear that a game is 100 hours I just put it off. That said, if a game is really fun to me I don't mind it going on and on :)

It's an old casual game that doesn't support higher resolutions. There's a number of games like this on Steam actually in the indie/casual category. Don't try too hard to find a way to run them in high res because often there isn't a way for those sort of games.

Uggh...must resist juvenile puns...

Personally, I like short and long games...the games need to know what they are though. Shorter games usually tend to be more focused, directed and more 'engaging' in shorter time period. Longer games tend to be more explorable and usually has some type of reward system for time committed.

Anyone here play the X series? I know there's the superbox, at $10 and it has all the games. But for 6.74, there is the x3 goldbox, which has all 3 X3 games/expansions, and is cheaper and newer.

I assume I can safely skip the older ones?

Reading this entire thread is more work than.. actual work where I get paid. But I've finally caught up.. until it jumps a few more dozen pages.

Some of you guys have impressive spreadsheets to track your purchase history. I don't have one just because I'm afraid to see how much I've spent over the years.

Mine is 4:3 "fullscreen" with back bars. It works fine apart from not scrolling when the pointer goes to the edge of the screen - the tutorial said it would.

Edit: Oh, if you have a massive monitor your game size is probably the same as mine, but you have more real-estate.

This is the only issue I have with the game. The low resolution makes it difficult sometimes to see things. With all these remakes coming out, there should be...

Coconut Queen HD!

I have hundreds of games at my disposal yet I just keep going back to CQ. I don't think I can stop until I beat it.
any opinions about the x games? if i only wanted one, which one should i get?
The X series is an open world (large open world), free roam, economic and militaristic space game. You can choose to fight other ships, set up a large trading empire, become a pirate, commit interstellar genocide, or even just fly around exploring. It can be quite a time sink, and occasionally you will find bugs (a lot moreso if you choose to do dead is dead mode where a steam hiccup will delete your game). X3:R isn't a bad place to start but the interface is much improved in X3:TC. I would personally start there and if you like the game pick up X3:AP in the future.

Warning, there is a steep learning curve, but once you pick up the basics it comes a lot quicker.

My haul:

Coconut Queen (Thanks, Motoki!)
Mission Runway
Secret of the Magic Crystals
And then just a bunch of random crap.
I agree with the fact that if you don't play a game it is just a waste of money.

However, I do not buy into the "per hour" mentality. I did when I was younger but as I get older and have less time I have trouble with it. The problem is that I don't mind a shorter game if its done well. I'd much rather have 4-6 hours of a great game then 15 with those same great segments but mixed in with an additional 10 hours of mediocrity.
...
I track cost per hour, but very much bias it to game type. So if it's a shorter game, it's got to be good. If the game drags on, I'm not going to get the full value since I won't finish it, which I concider.

Where it really helps is being able to spend on some titles. Arma2 for instance. During this sale, I went ahead and go the two expansions BAF and PMC for $12, which is a lot for me especially for addons. However I have more than 150 hours in Arma2/OA. So even if I never play the addons, I'm still easily in my cost/hr goals. So in this case, it reminded me to support the developer since I'm getting a lot of value from their game.

But, yeah, it's best not to only look at cost/hour. Enjoyment at decent value is the key.

It all makes sense now. I've always felt like I belonged here, even before the site existed.

(I maintain text lists of all games I own. It's important to be able to see at a glance whether I own any specific Atari or Master System or Coleco Vision or whatnot carts I find while scrounging through flea markets. This in addition to logging everything on CAG's system. At the end of the weekend, it really isn't unusual that I spend more time updating records than playing games.)

What's weird is how getting all the games you want super cheap changes your perception, years ago you paid $50 for a game you wanted, played the hell out of it, and didn't think once about how many hours you spent playing, cause you just got paid again, and can afford that shiny new game and spend another month or 2 playing the hell out of that one. But now, cause you have a little thing called backlog, and that same $50 buys 10 times the games, you feel compelled to make spreadsheets to keep track of them (I'm guilty as well), and you feel the need to assign value to the games (not that it really matters, because now you are willing to buy a game that has a 55% approval rating cause it's worth a try at $2, right?) to try to create a system that somehow gives you closure to how many you bought, and where you should be spending your time.

But that's the real issue. Even if we were teenagers again, and had all the time in the world to play whatever we wanted, the simple truth is that gaming has changed, and there just isn't enough time to play the games we have. You will never catch up. Between Indie publishers, main stream releases, and the updates/releases to those games. Just be sure you don't fall into the trap of clearing your backlog for the sake of clearing it. Remember, if your not enjoying yourself, what's the point?

You won't go wrong with getting the goldbox. However if you start with X3:R it'll be disorienting going to TC/AP. If you start with TC/AP it'll be disorienting going to R. The interface changes are that drastic. TC/AP is a lot more fluid and makes sense to me, but I started with TC. There is an overarching plot throughout the games, along with multiple plots in each game. X3:R is worth the extra $1.24 for the goldbox over the terran war pack assuming you enjoy the gameplay.

If nothing else I would start a game in TC, do the flight simulator mission at the way beginning and then go to R. It'll give you a few basics such as how to control your ship.

All these spreadsheets do is help us justify that it's okay to spend all this money on games because it was such a good deal. Yours takes it to the extreme showing us that look this game really only cost me $0.25/hr. I could of went to the movies which easily cost $5/hr of entertainment. Gaming gives you more BANG for your BUCK!

Yeah, pretty much that. It's not that I don't want to play these games--it's that I'm an adult with a job and a wife and cats and a turtle and a house so the game-playing tends to be (literally) the last thing I do in a day. Heck, I've got a PS3 backlog that consists of maybe 10-15 games and it'll probably take me longer to make headway on that than my PC collection.

I've pretty much completely converted over to steam instead of my consoles at this point. Well mostly because at my job I have alot of downtime just sitting in an ambulance (thank god for 4G). The sad thing is I find myself on forums looking for the next best deal on computer games rather than actually playing the damned things. Is it sad that I now own some games on both steam and my 360 and have never actually played them on either?

Now time to trade in the duplicate 360 games for some steam gift cards.
I thought about X on the big sale and am kind of thinking about it again. The problem is all these space games have really steep learning curves to me and they just make me go

This tutorial series helped me a lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p73C60btBi8

It's like a 15-20 part tutorial and you watch one, then play a little using what you learned. Then you move on to the next part in the tutorial. The fact that it took over 15 parts at about 10 minutes a piece kinda re-affirms just how complex these things are though.

I had fun with X3 for a while, but I eventually gave up after I got to a point where I needed to monitor 2 or 3 ships in various sectors at a time. Just too much crap to keep track of.

their site is all crap now and won't sell you the game and requires you to register to play?

Technically it's a business sim, but it takes place in space and you choose to fly between planets for your next flip. No actual flying involved. It's REALLY old. Like i used to have the big boxed dos version of this joint like 20 years ago. Surprised it's still around in fact.

finally got around to checking the damage from the summer sale
