CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Just a heads up to everyone that bought The Last Remnant right before it dropped even lower to $3.xx, I contacted GMG support and told them what happened and they said that they would put the difference in my account!
Steam would never refund money because of a price difference. Glad to see that good customer service is not dead.

i miss the days when i'd gladly spend a month or two (or more) playing the same game. wasteland comes to mind, bard's tale, ultimas... those days are now long gone. i often find myself rushing through games now, or spending more time acquiring them then playing them. it's almost like the backlog is more important than the games, which is kinda sad.

demon souls and dark souls being the rare exception, where i want to learn every last little thing. a few other standouts, like red dead redemption, and rouge-likes like nethack or crawl.
Question: I played Deus Ex Human Revolution on my friend's laptop, I was maybe 45 minutes to an hour in, and honestly I thought it was one of the most painfully boring games I have played in some time. Granted, I never gave it a fair shot and this has happened in the past with games for me, hated them at first, ended up loving them.

Now that its like $10 or less in most places, think its worth it?
I just started playing it after getting it in the sale, and I'm enjoying it... you can play it stealth or run-and-gun, but there's a lot of dialog and such either way. Honestly, I'd probably not drop my money on a "painfully boring game", but rather come back to it later (when it's even cheaper?)

That said, probably worth another look someday.

I bought it during the summer sale and I'm already 32+ hours in. I think it's easily worth multiple times the $6 I paid. But if you don't like that type of game, even $1 is a waste.

What didn't you like about it?

Cool. I almost bought the X SuperBox when it was a flash deal, but it was in the morning and I was running late for work, so I decided I'd wait and get it if it repeated. Now I think I'll just get the X3 Collection, unless someone can recommend the older games.

It just felt really dated and unexciting. I don't mind stealth games, but it was just missing the whole "stealth" feel to it. When I tried to blast through the levels, it was very difficult, and again, not very rewarding. Hard to pinpoint what I didn't like about it honestly, it just felt really shallow.
Eh, it's not that bad. It gives you more options to try out. Plus you will have them if you end up wanting to play multiplayer with someone else who has the DLC. It's was only a few dollars difference. Also, you didn't buy Jade Empire at $7.50 then have it go $3.75 the next day.
Unfortunately, I was in the camp that jumped on JE for $7.50.

Im not a big fan of competitive multiplayer, so I don't see myself using the extra content for that. I'm sure I'll check some of it out. Though, I'm having a hard time playing anyone else than Japan right now. Bashido is badass.

Maybe you just suck at it. And I mean that in a nice way. I suck at Deus Ex and I hate them too. I remember trying to play the original and not being able to do anything because I was trying to blast through it (when I should have been stealth) and being horrible at stealth. So I know I don't like them because I suck at them. That said I just bought HR for $3.99 after trade in and am willing to give it one more go.

Are we thinking of the same game? Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Dated? ...I'm really glad I can enjoy it at least. :/

Hey I can respect that! It might just be because I wasn't good at it. But the game felt super dated, from the presentation, to the graphics, to the gameplay, it just feels like something that should have been released many years ago.

I actually find the stealth fun and the only way to play the game. It's pretty easy until late in the game, but by then you should have upgraded your stealth abilities so it's still not hard. If you try to blast it you won't get anywhere because the enemies seems to infinitely respawn.

I agree the graphics looks dated because of the low res texture. But I don't play games for graphics.

See, I can see how you could feel that compared to modern games. Honestly though I was blown away by how they handled it. They got to a beautiful level of graphics and then stopped. There's something to be said about 'Call of Duty' style graphics, but honestly the graphical arms race drives me nuts so it's nice to see a game be successful when they didn't spend the entire time on graphics alone.
On the subject of short games Vs longer games...

I actually prefer a shorter game, I mean, it's not like I am going to pay full price for it, no matter how long the game lasts.

Need for Speed: The Run and Hydrophobia are both short games, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age are not. Guess which two I have played?

It's not like I don't WANT to play Fallout 3 and all of those other great RPGs, but I know before I start that I am looking into putting anywhere from 40-100 hours into the game, and while that gives great value for money (dollar per hour ratio) for that amount of time, I can go through my backlog and play (and complete) who knows?

6? 8? 10?

decent length games in the same amount of time, and I would feel like I have achieved something at the end of the day (like making a small dent in the backlog)
Exactly, I can get way more shorter games done in the same time it would to complete a 20-40 hr. or more game. Also, if you're a completionist like me who for some OCD reason feels the need to do every single side quest no matter how time-comsuming and boring it is, you're always in for some extra pain. So instead of playing FO3, like I've been meaning to do for months now, I decide to play "----", because I know it has a shorter period of gameplay.
Oh and the planned sequel was supposed to be the reverse, a male escapist fantasy with a harem of women catering to him.
While I generally disagree it feels all that dated, let's keep in mind this game also targeted consoles which were released as early as 2005.

So without getting into that old argument, maybe that contributed to your feelings?

That and I never gave it a true shot. I had a buddy tell me how it was the greatest thing since sliced bread so I expected something amazing, maybe that influenced my opinion. But I'll probably just wait for a major price drop and then I'll give it another shot!
For anyone not checking the Indie Royale thread, the new bundle is live.

It includes:

Puzzle Agent
Geneforge Saga
Oniken
Mutant Storm Reloaded
SWIFT☆STITCH
Unepic

Extras:

Oniken OST
Rose and Time game
Royale Ring + 100 unepic credits

If you pay $8 or more:

Prof.SAKAMOTO - Insert
Thanks for the heads up. Pretty disappointing for me though. I already have Puzzle Agent and the only other thing in there on Steam that seems decent is Geneforge. Probably not worth buying the bundle just for Geneforge is it?

The first game was almost impossible for me to get into. It took me probably 5 or 6 hours to get it, and I hadn't made it very far in the game during that time. I never finished it, but I liked the idea and most of what I'd played.

HR is so much more accessible and fun for me. It's mostly just interface things that help you navigate the environment and be more of a predator than prey. That's what hurts so many stealth games for me. I don't want to feel like I'm constantly hiding and backed into a corner that's difficult to escape. In HR I feel like my options are all in front of me and I know what I can do. I like Hitman for similar reasons. In that game I'm always out in the open and in control instead of hiding and at a disadvantage to the enemies.

Most games, I can max out at 1980x1080.
Witcher 2 and Metro 2033 are one of those exceptions.
RAGE is also another.

I had to drop down RAGE PC's resolution to 1600 x 1024 and turn some settings down just to get it running and looking worth a damn and keep the texture-pops down a bit on my PC:
i7 950; 1 GB of GeForce GTX 560 Ti; 8 GB of RAM.

About mods - I don't think there's much out there for mods.

I've got an AMD and I'm taking a chance on it. It's a 1G Radeon 4890, so aging a bit but still does very well @ 1080. I'm used to working around the occasional issue, and if it just doesn't preform at all, well... good odds I'll go back to nVidia on my next system upgrade anyway, whenever that is.

Take a peek at Unepic. I've heard a few mumblings about it and, after playing for about an hour earlier, it's pretty neat.

I'm gonna use the word Metroidvania here because, although I don't actually know what it means, it'll get somebody's attention. :)

*edit: Rirath beat me to that.

Well it was designed around 2005/2006 hardware so there's that, but that pretty much goes for most major releases these days. I can't see they did a lot to make it look any better on the PC but again par for the course these days.

The actual gameplay I liked for the most part but it is a slow paced game since you can't just stealth through a whole area in 2 minutes or anything.

I could definitely see that game not being some people's thing though.

Does anyone know if Batman Franchise came with all the DLC for Arkham City? Because I checked my CD Key section and I'm missing Challenge map and skins over there.

It's funny, the wife was asking me what I thought of it and, while describing it, I basically concluded that "It's fun, but it's slow because there are a lot of inefficiencies that seem like part of the game. It would probably be better without them."

Waiting for your single battery to charge rather than being able to charge multiple, hacking taking as many clicks as it does, losing your Ghost/Smooth bonuses if you get an alarm state and so needing to reload (rather than just hide/fight), the sprint system, etc.

Those do not have keys. So long as you have any DLC maps in the Challenge section you are good. Also if you beat the game (or use the code) to access the skins when resuming the game you should be fine.

I do not have the codes listed but have the content.

The only way I'd want to play multiplayer is with a mate to team up on hard difficulty with a lot of opponents. Though all of my mates would end up stabbing me in the back the first time I looked vulnerable.

Plus, waiting for a real life opponent to take his/her turn would be excruciatingly boring. I've got mines and farms to build. I can't wait around for other people to make moves.

Unepic was the only one that looked interesting to me (already have Puzzle agent), so it's a pass for me. Might keep an eye out for Unepic on sale though if it ever makes it to steam. When I was mulling over buying the franchise pack - all DLC for AC was listed. So, if you purchased the franchise pack you should have them all. Be sure to right click on the game and go to downloadable content to see the DLC you have...

I have an ATI card and I could run RAGE just fine, but you NEED to turn up the texture loading options and turn on vsync or else the game looks like crap.

Basically, the video options menu has two options that were patched in. The texture precaching option sounded like something I should leave off. Don't be fooled. Flip that sucker on and get vsync running while you're at it and you got a fine game

Haha... I never finished DE:HR because I got Skyrim part way in but my stealthing always turned into shooting matches and brute forcing my way through. Now I'm playing Sniper Elite V2 and shooting matches aren't good for anything except revisitng your last checkpoint and it weighs on me how much I suck at it. I like the game, I just suck so bad at playing it

Really tempted by Rage but I have it for the ps3 and got it for $5 new from best buy a few months ago (anarchy edition). So while its tempting I will pass, bought to many games already recently. Might have to cut off new purchases for a couple of months or at least til I actually beat some of these games.

I just finished Sniper Elite V2 on Marksman and giving it a run through on the hardest difficulty. I suck at anything stealth too. On Marksman I was able to just kill every single enemy every time without the need to stealth too much. Just masking shots with bombs at times but there are some levels that are HARD to try to charge through. Love the game though. Probably will get frustrated on the highest difficulty, especially since headshots are next to impossible until you get used to the scope. Great game, recommend it to all.

I almost bit on this game on the sale, but nah, will wait for $15 on the bundle, at least. I do love me some sniping tho. How realistic is it? How many difficulties are there? How long is it? And... what changes in the difficulties?

My wife and I play Civ V together. We play as two nonaligned players, but trade with each other often, even gifting units in times of war. It works out great that way.

Civ V is far easier to play as a turtler than Civ IV since cities can defend even without an occupying unit, and one unit per tile makes it very difficult to coordinate large military actions.
FYI someone in the other thread said the $6 Steamworks Rage on Newegg is the Anarchy Edition with pre-order bonuses. I don't think you can get these normally if you buy it on Steam, can you?

*Edit2: People on the Rage Steam forums are saying no, the version you buy at Steam does not have the AE DLC and you can't buy them separately there either, you can only get it from the retail edition. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2815040

Thanks for the heads up mate. I was going to pass and wait for the inevitable $5 sale on Steam, but seeing this, I went ahead and got it. For an extra $1, I'd rather have the better edition. Cheers!
Hey I can respect that! It might just be because I wasn't good at it. But the game felt super dated, from the presentation, to the graphics, to the gameplay, it just feels like something that should have been released many years ago.
??? the oddest comment i've ever read about dues ex: HR, i think.

to me, it was one of the best games of last year, a true AAA title. Absolutely loved it, and i don't generally like stealth games.
Yeah, you would have to use the windows installer or Desura. Fun game though. If you pick it up, I can give one word of advice. Save. Save Often.
I really have no good reason or explanation but if a game isn't on Steam these days I just can't be bothered with it. It's kind of funny since usually I'm 100% against ANY sort of DRM at all and let's face it Steam is a form of DRM. However I really like the fact that Steam organizes all my games for me and lets me basically store as many as want on their space. I really like being able to register something there and then not have to worry about it ever. If I have to re-format my HD or get a new computer or whatever I know the game is still available for me without having to dig through tons of my back DVD's that I've made.

I may be the wrong person to answer this, since I paid full price on release day (even got the Xbox 360 augmented edition from gamestop). But I liked the game a lot. So, yeah, to me < $10 is worth it. In fact I almost bought it on steam last week just to have it on PC (but logic prevailed on that one).

The game definitely pushes you toward stealth 70% of the time, if that is a problem for you, then maybe it's not the game for you. That said, I thought it was a whole lot of fun.

? I don't really understand this at all.... graphics, presentation and gameplay are all pretty great.... are you sure you're not talking about the ORIGINAL Deus Ex, or it's sequel Invisible War?
Well, you might as well let us know if it's worthwhile.

I mean, if Coconut Queen can surprise, perhaps Fish Tycoon can, as well.
Fish Tycoon isn't a surprise. It's just crap. It's midly entertaining crap, but it's crap nonetheless.

It's like similar Facebook fish-raising simulations, only more poorly done.

And I"m still playing it, for some reason.

For a while, I strongly felt that way, too. I love the simplicity of organization Steam provides. But as more of these indie bundles provided Desura keys, I figured I would try it out. While it's not as pretty as Steam, it operates largely in the same manner. It's basically the Steam of indie games. I heartily recommend it as a secondary PC gaming space if you are at all interested in indie games.

Yeah I really should give Desura a try since I have a TON of keys from various bundles
