CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Mobo has optical out, soundcard has coax, but apparently vista is broke for dolby digital over optical/coax. It will only output stereo over optical.
Apparently SOME cards work, but I can't seem to find one that I am sure will work.

Inexpensive to me = less than $85-100

PS - thanks to OregonDealz as well :)
Wow, this thread is still moving pretty dang fast.

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a relatively inexpensive soundcard that was capable of outputting 5.1 sound over optical or spidf/coax to a surround sound receiver - running windows vista.

I've been looking around and apparently this is a huge problem - wondering if anyone here has come across the issue/found a card that works.
I have this one hooked up to my receiver & it works really well.
For all the Freedom Force stuff. I personally found Vs. the 3rd Reich more enjoyable albeit shorter. Overall the gameplay is the same, but the story better.

It boils down to this... why support a company that isn't willing to try. Now with that said we have no idea how well Dark Souls will be. They could say no optimization or no changes, but make it work perfectly fine on the PC. I mean they can't be any lazier than Bethesda who leaves the resizing of menus to modders because taking 5 minutes to do that is apparently far too difficult and costly. Scratch that they could, they could only allow controller support.
I don't want to seem like they have a right to release a broken game and we should be grateful, Only that people who are upset that Dark Souls PC wont have Ultra Textures, Mod Support, Private Server support, 3D vision support, etc and because of that will pirate it are in the wrong and not in the right like they say they are.(http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/06/09/will-dark-souls-be-an-epic-fail-on-pc/) They are who I am pointing at as being entitled to expect some medium scale developer to do more for their PC port then ID(Rage) or Bethesda(Skyrim) or Activation(Protype 2) did with there's.

Also good to hear that, About 5 hours into Freedom Force so hopefully I'll be playing the sequel here soon :D
The Steam version runs flawlessly on Win 7 and Win Vista. I don't think I could ever find a patch for it manually.
Edit, won Puzzle Agent on steamgifts. woohoo
Good to know! It's always cheaper on steam anyways.

Also, RAGE!!! Payday crashes every time I try to play Mercy Hospital, SP or MP. No clue why :( Other levels play fine.

I never saw PayDay update, there's no history of it doing so in my downloads, and when I go to "Always Automatically Update This Game" and click ok, it resets to "Never Update This Game". Restarting client does no good. Thoughts?

Thanks Motoki, I will check that one out.
I have 2 annoying questions after reading the specs/reviews on that.
1 - Are you running Vista?
2 - You have that hooked up via optical and you're getting real dolby digital (in games)?

If yes to both you've saved me a lot of aggravation & expense! :)

Yeah, I had this issue too. When I tried launching the game though, it notified me that it had to update the files to a new format like a lot of other games have had to do. I got the update then.

I just clicked "Play Game" and it told me it needed to update before playing, DLed the update and the Play Game. It loaded and shows Mercy Hospital as a level but it's not working for me.

Found a fix on the steam forums if anyone has the same problem:

"If you crash on NO MERCY here is the fix

The Steam installer sometimes misses to remove this file:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\payday the heist\assets\patch_header.bundle

Please remove it and restart Steam and PAYDAY"

Plus lets look at the opposite side. What if some PC developer said they were making no changes between the PC to the console port. So say the left joystick controlled and actual on screen mouse in menus (It has been done before and it is awful). Who wouldn't be upset about something like that? Are they upset because they feel entitled or because they think giving people money for doing the bare minimum whilst not asking for the bare minimum in price is absurd.

i can't even imagine playing Dark Souls without a controller. The most incredible thing about the game are its combat mechanics... and... yea. I know it's probably hard to understand if you haven't played DS, but it would be like trying to play Robotron with a mouse (not that DS is a dual stick shooter).

Mine has no issues, I didn't even realize that there was an update lol. Maybe try reinstalling?

Not quite steam but there was some discussion about Planescape Torment earlier. I'm looking to play that for the first time after I finish Grimrock; I've heard the story is amazing and it's entirely possible to go through the game with little to no combat which I'd like to do. Can anyone give me any tips for this without spoiling anything?

Turn on sprite mirroring in the options if your character is walking backwards/sideways when he moves.

Yes I am getting actual Dolby. And to get Dolby in games you need Dolby Digital Live, not just regular Dolby. The Diamond card does both. Regular Dolby will work on pre-recorded stuff like movies but games need Dolby Digital Live which works on the fly.

I'm running the optical out to my Onkyo receiver. And I'm running on Win 7 64-bit. I have vague recollections having gotten a driver off of some site so I don't know that the one straight from the CD will work. It's been a while but I can try and do some digging and figure out where I got those drivers from.

I have Demons' Souls so I know if I get Dark Souls on the PC I would be using a controller. I was primarily using that as an example of bad porting sort of in the style of Modern Warfare 2's custom mouse support for the PC or how a lot of PC games now have a lot of keyboard symbols because rather than removing the Xbox 360 symbols they decided to change them into keyboard symbols (Apparently we need those symbols now because we never knew what to do for the past 20+ years in PC gaming when we didn't have them).

But honestly I find most third person games feel quite awkward with a mouse. I am not sure why because first person is so natural with one, but for some reason a joystick and third person seems to not throw me off nearly as much.

Those symbols aren't for us. They're there to help casuals and the younger generation who say "fuck this shit" when they get frustrated because they don't know the controls. My cousin is one of these people and every time before he plays any game when he visits, he always asks "What are the controls?" like I'm going to know off the top of my head. People need to go to options and read shit or read manuals (though manuals are becoming more rare these days).

So I tried DayZ today finally after downloading like 15 gigs to get the damn game running. I will have to play with friends but my problem with the game is that simply there are too many damn different commands/buttons. I mean I picked up a hatchet and well I was trying to figure out how to use it as a weapon, then I died in the process. It should be just pick it up, and use it, not inventory manage then try to figure out the button to equip it as a weapon.

I am assuming the game will be better once I learn everything but I will wait for friends so we can all figure it out together.

I'd suggest doing the ARMA II tutorial first. I had no clue what I was doing the first time I played. The tutorial helped me get more of a hang of it.

Doesn't teach you that you have to right click the axe in your toolbelt to equip it though. Then you need to be conscious of how ammo moves when you move a weapon to your backpack and how if you move a weapon without enough slots in your backpack, it disappears for eternity.

Instant gratification is bad enough in gaming already. And we definitely don't need to encourage laziness on the younger generation. I guess it is a different time though. No need anymore to find the code in the manual to actually be able to play The Simpsons Arcade game (On Floppy) on the PC. And hell I am not even that old (22).

I'm not having that issue, but that would certainly make me panic.

To try and help, I noticed that the screen shots on the Product Page show a Windows XP border. (Real classy, I know.) Perhaps you should put the game into Compatibility Mode. (Windows XP, Service Pack 2 or 3.)

I'll search Google and see if there are any resources. In the meantime, consider the Compatibility tab; For me, that menu has saved more than one game.
I've been watching a ton of youtube videos on DayZ & the inventory system seems very outdated and ridiculously clunky to me.
It has to be realistic. I mean when I try to find my phone on my person I have to get out a piece of paper and look through everything to see if I have it, then once I do I proceed in following all the steps involving reaching into my pocket and equipping my phone. Using it is another story that usually involves me becoming immobilized.

I mean the amount of realism in these games is astonishing. Having an inventory system is far more realistic than holding every gun ever made.

Sophita do you really think it is totally unreasonable to expect higher resolution textures? Most PC gamers run a higher resolutions than consoles. This is common knowledge. Some people spend a lot of money and/or time getting their rigs setup. Is it really spoiled and childish that they would expect a game to look a bit better than it would on a lower resolution $199 2005 hardware console?

Also mod support helps a lot because when the developer is lazy medium scale and doesn't get to a lot of stuff then the community will do it.

Oh and Bethesda did eventually release a free high res texture pack for Skyrim so even if, as From claims, they are just hurrying up to get it out the door ASAP they can always release it later.

Now I don't think any of this is an excuse to pirate a game and I think those are just a (hopefully) few extreme individuals. If it really bugs you just wait for a cheap sale or don't buy it at all.

GFWL is another story though. I am absolutely not advocating anyone pirate anything but honestly when you make buying a game more of a pain in the ass than pirating it you are doing something wrong.

GFWL is crap. Microsoft half assed it and since the Xbox is their cash cow they don't have a huge incentive to improve it either.

Now before you go with the sob story about how such a poor tiny developer can't afford to do Steamworks blah blah :-({|= Signal Studios are really small and are adding Steamworks in as an alternative to GFWL for Toy Soldiers, a little ass indie game, due to popular demand. Also Xseed is a really small outfit, so small that they had to pay a fan translator to get Ys translated. And they still added Steamworks in those Ys games, so I don't want to hear it. Talk to the hand sister. :speaktothehand:

Although it is unfortunate that as the world proceeds it will most likely get worse. As it stands nobody is born entitled and as I love doing this I will quote (it may not be 100% correct) Star Trek Enterprise, "Superior breeding creates superior thinking". I am amazed at how well that quote works in so many situations; Of course the whole 99% thing made that quote work about every day.

Edit: Let me clarify and get to the point: my issue is only with the people who are talking up on Neogaf,Reddit enough so that Forbes is now reporting how a very vocal part of the PC community, is saying how they will not buy the game and instead will pirate it just because of GFWL. Or the fact that it has the same issues as the console release. These are the people I feel are entitled with this kind of attitude.

In no way do I support someone making a horrible pc port or DRM filled game like Batman. Just that as long as they deliver what they promised a functioning version of Dark Souls on PC, I do not see the issue personally.

Also I normally don't comment on signatures, but I also usually don't notice that someone else has played Viva Pinata and the original at that. I would like to let you are a connoisseur of fine games.
Honestly yes, If people are upset that the game isn't entirely remade and because of that will not buy the game and instead will pirate it. Yes I think it is unreasonable. I mean it is a port and From Software has been upfront about the fact unlike say Epic(Bulletstorm) and again ID with Rage who lied and just said,"Don't worry it's not a port, promise" instead From Software is saying,"This is a port so don't expect anything new other than content, and it is at the same level of the console release" and with that then buyers can decide rather or not they want to buy it.

But for people to turn around and say it's ok to pirate because From Software didn't remake their game for PC when that was never promised is odd and I view as childish.

I mean Batman Arkham Asylum/City, Rage, Bulletstorm, Prototype as well as Dead Space 1 and 2, Call of Duty, Spec Ops, Ghost Recon and many other ports never completely changed the way their PC ports played. So why should From Software be expected too?

I mean would mods be amazing? Yes Would ultra high res textures be amazing? Yes. But like I said earlier in no way do I feel this gives people they right to pirate the game. More so when none of it was promised nor expected.
As someone who has modded and worked with textures in the past let me just say that the sensible thing to do is use very high resolution source images to work with, work on your textures at very high resolutions, save them when you are happy with them as a template to fall back on, again at very high resolutions, then shrink them down.

You can always shrink them down to a lower resolution without too much difficulty but the opposite is not true and if you start with lower res textures and then try to blow them up they look terrible and it is a lot of work to clean them up.

Then again we are talking about the Japanese here, people who used to throw away Anime cells once they were done with them because they thought they were worthless and who made FFVII then threw out the background artwork when they were done so the PC version had to use horribly pixelated blown up (90s) console resolution instead of being able to just rescan the original artwork at a higher resolution.

As far as I am concerned if they made their game in a way that they can't just easily go back from some high res texture templates and re-save them at a higher res than they did previously then they are doing it wrong.

I mean I appreciate their candor in saying don't expect the moon and again I am absolutely not saying any should pirate the game under any circumstances, but I think they could have done things in a more efficient manner and I still don't think expecting a PC game to look decent at higher resolutions that most PC gamers run at is unreasonable.

Anyway, I have a feeling we are just going to go around and around on this :boxing: so lets agree to disagree. :p

And GFWL is terrible. Period. It's not entitled to say you don't want it. Many people have legitimately had problems accessing games they paid for because of it meanwhile pirates don't have any problems at all. They need to get off their asses like some much smaller developers have been doing and make their game Steamworks like the majority wants or GTFO. I don't care what the fans think, I care as a customer what I want to see and what kind of hassle and BS I don't want to put up with.

And yeah the media is always going to take sensationalistic stories of vocal minorities and run with it. That's what the media does.
That expression... it peers into my soul...

Also I normally don't comment on signatures, but I also usually don't notice that someone else has played Viva Pinata and the original at that. I would like to let you are a connoisseur of fine games.
Hahaha, you're very kind. Admittedly, I didn't play much of it. Nevertheless, what I recall of the game was interesting.

I still miss "Old Rare," though. The modern day version of the company makes me sad.

Link me! I'm loving this game.

I'm about to be in the same boat. I got lucky and won Arma II from a giveaway and I've been downloading the thing for the last 3-4 days. Finally got it all finished today. Now it's on to getting the Day-Z mod and figuring out what the hell I'm doing.
Good to know! It's always cheaper on steam anyways.

Also, RAGE!!! Payday crashes every time I try to play Mercy Hospital, SP or MP. No clue why :( Other levels play fine.
You're welcome. :D
Hmm, may be buggy. I'll load it up as soon as I finish with Civ V.
