CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)
The older pre-VI Heroes games definitely don't. I checked.

According to the wiki here are the games that use UPlay:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubisoft#Uplay

 • Anno 2070
 • Assassin's Creed II
 • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
 • Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy
 • Assassin's Creed Revelations
 • Assassin's Creed III
 • Beowulf: The Game
 • Brothers in Arms: Furious 4
 • Call of Juarez: The Cartel
 • Driver: San Francisco
 • From Dust
 • Heroes of Might and Magic VI
 • Just Dance 3
 • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
 • Pure Football
 • R.U.S.E.
 • Shaun White Skateboarding
 • Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic
 • The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom
 • Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2
 • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
 • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction
 • Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

Not a ton but definitely some high profile games in there.

Note that there may be even more DRM in addition to UPlay and Steam DRM (if you buy it there) on some of these. I know Anno 2070 also has Tages DRM with a limited number of activations on top of UPlay and Steam. I don't think most of the rest have a 3rd layer of DRM but I'm not familiar with all the details for all of them so caveat emptor for those considering buying Ubisoft games.
Thanks for the reply Motoki. I actually checked Wikipedia last night, but there wasn't anything about uplay on the Ubisoft page at the time. So that must have just been added.

Of that list, I own Assassin's Creed II, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands & Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction. Only Assassin's Creed II is installed at the moment, and I've never actually launched the game. So it looks like I was never in any danger. Though even if I was in danger at one point, as Necrotron pointed out, they've patched up the security hole.
For people getting worked up by RollingSkull, please remember this. Especially the bolded part.
It always amuses me to see people who don't realize that RollingSkull is hamming it up and it's just his shtick. Personally, I find it kind of entertaining and I appreciate that there is at least one guy here (actually, there are a couple) who is willing to swim against the tide.
You're first mistake is thinking they give a shit. They are totally arrogant assholes who view all their customers as potential criminals who only buy their games because their wonderful DRM is doing its job and keep them from pirating it.

They've repeatedly said they believe in their DRM and that it is working. Every time it blows up in their face with outages or security problems they release some very terse statement with no apology whatsoever for the time lost when their paying customers could not access their games or the very real security risk their software posed to people's PCs.

They are the worst of the worst. Thinking they care about what you or any other paying customer thinks will only lead to disappointment.

/Ubi rant
Well they've obviously gotten the message at least partially, AC Revelations had no always-on and they've patched it out of most of their older games. I'm not trying to defend them since this has been a real hassle for me, but look at the facts. They know people are pissed about their DRM and they're looking at alternatives to always-on. I personally didn't have a problem with Uplay until it started preventing me from game patches and secretly installing browser plugins with security holes. If they can fix that crap and eliminate always-on then Ubi would be doing better than anything with Securom in my opinion.
I live in Seattle so I can just get my ass on a real ferry boat if I want that. Plus I already own the Ship Simulator Extreme on Steam with the Ferry pack DLC. :p

Actually, what I should be playing is the damned Garbage Truck Simulator because at least then I can pretend it's getting done instead of festering out there for a week because they are on strike. :bomb:

As for the book of Unwritten Tales, I will wait until the Europeans who drive up the price for adventure games tire of it and it goes on (a real) sale.
I'm surprised you didn't go for Courier Service Simulator instead.

For the record, Ship Extremes takes place in the ocean and the ferries in seattle go into puget sound - both very, very different than being on a river.

Well all of the statements I've read from them come off very rude and arrogant considering these are paying customers that have been inconvenienced and/or put at risk.

I'm not really seeing any great alternatives on their part either other than removing DRM from old games that they don't care about anymore because the sales have dried up.

I know they did take out the always on requirement from some of their games but I think that was more because they had the pitchforks at their door and in some cases Steam was even issuing refunds, like with From Dust, which is something they never do. It felt like the had to rather than a lightbulb went off in their head.

This is one case where I would be happy to be proven wrong but I'm sorry I just don't see them as coming around at all.

Shush! Stop talking me into the damned river simulator game.

I think the only Indie Bundle I have any interest in (more accurately, don't already own most of the games) is Indie Bundle II.

EYE looks like some weird fun, Botanicula sounds good, and the others I don't know too much about but regarding Universe Sandbox, I read someone's funny comment on here during the sale about blowing up the universe and being all "where is your god now?" ... yeah, everyone has at least a slight god complex, don't deny it.

Still, $10. Meh. I'm so cheap.

Why isn't there a Digital Game Store Simulator? Bundle games, design sales, discount games before sequels release, etc. I want an achievement for making 80% of my profits from hats.
How about a simulation simulator?
Yo dawg, I heard you like simulations so we put a simulation in yo simulator so you can simulate while you simulate.

Sometimes I play Ship Simulator Extreme Ferry pack DLC while I ride an actual ferry. Then I start tell the tourists around me that I am piloting the actual vessel they are on. Then I start going, "Oh, crap! No no no!" and steer the boat toward another boat. Not really, but that does sound sort of fun.

Wait, how about a simulator game where you simulate a person playing a simulator game. Oh and you have to occasionally eat, drink, sleep and go to work too.

I am a bit disappointed with Transformers remaining at the $7.50 mark; At $5, I would have picked it up. (Admittedly, I'm not a Transformers fan, but I've seen the game in action. In all honesty, it looks like a really nice diversion.)

Oh well, that money can, potentially, go towards Wanderlust.

Feel the same (I was tempted by Bundle X). Forking away $10 is such a pain. $2/game isn't even that much. D:

#1 Morning/afternoon all.

#2 Dammit Motoki, Book of Unwritten Tales looks like some of the old click adventures I used to play. Only prettier. I wonder as it has a pretty decent meta-score (if that can be trusted anymore).
Of course I'm hamming it up
For people getting worked up by RollingSkull, please remember this. Especially the bolded part.

While I'm glad RS admits he's 'hamming it up', it's still the internet, and it's still one more voice out there that speaks without consideration for all the love and energy creators put into creating (in this case, devs put into making games for us).

If he's just trolling for fun, fine, that's fine ha ha ha. Wait. I don't get it.
I could not disagree with you more. Hell, the lazy idolization of indie games and even lazier disregard for mainstream games is exactly what I am aligning myself with.

Of course I'm hamming it up when I suggest indie is synonymous with bad. But it is equally as silly to suggest games are more inherently virtuous on a small team, that published games somehow are completely free of heart and soul. That's ridiculous.

Indie and mainstream games should be judged on whether they are good games. Nobody is served by romanticizing indie games and grading them on a curve.
Why must the idolization of indie games be 'lazy'? You make the same mistake in another recent post, where you accuse the 'masses' of being schizophrenic about their political allegiance, as if you don't realize that's only because the 'masses' are -different- people, so you're hearing absolutely distinct people voice separate opinions.

You want a list of 'indie' games that suck? It's miles long.
But there is also a long list of awesome indie games that were ignored and forgotten, due to lack of coverage.

Just because a very select list of indie games get a ton of attention for one reason or another doesn't mean 'indie games' as a whole get special attention. Plenty of subpar 'mainstream' games get the same sort of red carpet (and undeserved) fanfare. And plenty of great indie games get ignored. And just because you don't like the indie games that do get attention doesn't mean others share your opinion.

I guess what I'm saying here is that the issues you criticize are valid, but your criticisms would be better aimed at gaming media in general, rather than indie developers.

We wouldn't have gaming without indie devs. Diablo? Thanks rogue-likes! Bejeweled and all other casual gaming? Thank you Alexey Pazhitnov, creator of Tetris. Richard Garriot was a teenager when he created Akalabeth, soon moving on to the Ultimas. And on and on.

Now, we certainly agree that games shouldn't be 'graded on a curve'... sure. But we also shouldn't be grading mainstream games on a curve, yet we do -- the amount of 'bonus points' AAA games get for graphics and, more cynically, advertising dollars, far outweighs any love indie games get for being indie.

RE: Limbo -- You mention this specifically in a post, so I'll address it. Did I mention I hate platformers? Limbo is a slow, atmospheric platformer, and I don't like it. However, I understand it does what it does very well (especially in establishing a mood) and I also understand why other people might like it. I also know a game like Limbo is very unlikely to be developed by a mainstream publisher, and I'm glad it exists, and I'm glad it got atttention... even though I don't like it. I've never played Minecraft, either, and while you might be right that it's a beta, it doesn't change the fact that thousands upon thousands love it, does it?

And isn't that ultimately the best end result? That developers create games that gamers enjoy playing? Even when you might not be the person to enjoy a specific game?
Wasn't that the Sims? Exact reason I hated the game.

And sometimes I'm at home during the summer and I literally feel like a Sims character. How depressing. :pP

I do like this comment. I feel that independent titles should be given some additional admiration due to the [assumed] limited resources of the development team, but I won't rate a game higher simply for that; At the end of the day, what is fun is what gets my money. What is of a particular standard of quality gets my money. What I end up enjoying the most is what gets recommended to others.

After all, I don't play games as a chore; I want to be entertained.

I'm not saying they're going to do a complete 180 but Assassin's Creed Revelations is evidence of them coming around to some degree. They didn't put any always-on DRM on it. Before that they were putting it on most if not all releases at launch. On the other hand, I found an interesting article where one of their guys complains that 95% of their customers will pirate so they aren't going to release Ghost Recon for PC. They made some kind of free to play game for PC instead. NO game is a crappy alternative to DRM, obviously. Seems like they don't have a single unified approach at Ubisoft.
I haven't started it again since solving this but I played about 20 minutes before and it seemed really cool.

This guy on Steam forums has figured out exactly what Uplay 2.x is doing wrong when it comes to Steam and how to fix it without uninstalling Uplay. I'm going to tweet this to Ubisoft and see if they can fix their shit. The email support was incompetent when it came to this but the twitter guy seemed to know a little more or at least understand that it was a DRM issue. Oh wow, that actually sounds like a competent answer and solution. So of course it didn't come from ubisoft.

Yes. A simulator within a simulator within a simulator? That's redonkulous. *BRawnnnnnn*
At the end of the day, what is fun is what gets my money.
Pretty much this. And as for expectations, I would expect different things from a game if it's $60 vs. when it's $10, so it's not so much the label of something being "indie" that curbs one's expectations, but the pricing of it. But yeah, at the end of the day, what is fun is what gets my money, praise and time, regardless of if it's a big title or an indie or whatnot.
The amazon reviews for that game are hilarious.

A little sample:

"To call it a 'game' is simply not even doing it justice; The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Dark Souls, Grand Theft Auto, Starcraft, Super Meat Boy- These are games...but Street Cleaner Simulator 2011 is a religious experience."
xD Wow. I want it.

See and that latter article you linked to is exactly the kind of stuff I am used to hearing from them. As a PC Gamer who buys my games, buys a lot of them and doesn't pirate them it really pisses me off.

I'm not a total Pollyanna and I realize piracy exists, but other companies are releasing games that have much more minimally intrusive DRM (like Steam) or even no DRM at all and they are managing to make a profit so if Ubisoft can't then they are doing it wrong.

If someone genuinely thinks that 95% of their customer base are unscrupluous thieves out to screw them over then you need to get the hell out of that business and do something else.

If you look at Anno 2070 which is a recent game for them that they are still trying to promote it has 3 forms of DRM when you buy it on Steam. Steam verifies you own it, which most people are okay with, but then Uplay also verifies you own it (and hopefully it doesn't go down when you want to play) and Tages also verifies you own it and will lock your ass out if you install it too many times.

I really want that game and it bugs me greatly that I can't get it but I simply refuse to spend my money supporting such outrageous draconian multiple layers of DRM. I absolutely would have bought that game by now if it had only Steam as it's DRM which many other games have done and been very successful with. Hell I may have even paid full price for it and for me that's saying something.

They are losing sales from legitmate, honest customers and they absolutely refuse to see it. I just makes me go :wall: :wall: :wall:

If they want to go freemium as the answer to all us thieving PC gamers  that's fine with me because I have no interest in freemium or being nickled and dimed to death with microtransactions and I won't feel bad about wanting their games but not allowing myself to get them.

I agree with you 100% on all of that. It seems like each of their games takes a different approach to DRM and attitude toward piracy. I wonder if the producer or director of a game determines this stuff cause they sure don't give the impression of a unified approach/philosophy.

What is of a particular standard of quality gets my money. What I end up enjoying the most is what gets recommended to others.

After all, I don't play games as a chore; I want to be entertained.
And this is why I have no intentions of playing Dark Souls. I'm sure the challenge will be fun for others, but I'm to the point where I don't enjoy getting my ass handed to me over and over again in video games. I'm too old for that amount of stress.

It looks like War for Cybertron is a bit cheaper for our european cags. With flow on his honey moon, my hookup is gone :(. Anyone want to help out?
While I'm glad RS admits he's 'hamming it up', it's still the internet, and it's still one more voice out there that speaks without consideration for all the love and energy creators put into creating (in this case, devs put into making games for us).

If he's just trolling for fun, fine, that's fine ha ha ha. Wait. I don't get it.
Every act of creation involves love and energy from Michael Bay movies down to crappy fan fiction. But you're only using those terms to describe the indie games you like to shield them. I think that's irrelevant at best and dangerous at worst. I ham it up when I suggest indie games and real games are different (Partly because indie is a label that has almost no meaning any more.) but my opinions are my own. I'm not here to evaluate the love put into a game I still didn't like. If that work ethic shines through on a poor game, fine, but it's still poor.

Because I think statements like the one you made comparing indie to mainstream titles was phrased only in the most trite cliches. That indies are true innovation while mainstreams are just boring rehash. I reject that hypothesis vehemently every time I see it. It is inaccurate and it is lazy thinking.

You want a list of 'indie' games that suck? It's miles long.
But there is also a long list of awesome indie games that were ignored and forgotten, due to lack of coverage.

On this note we are in absolute agreement and I make this point all the time but nobody ever notices it as much as when I hate their favorite games. So many great small games don't reach indie darling status. I mean, hell, Wanderlust vs Kung Fu Strike just up thread I argues that. Noitu Love 2 as well. The indie darling attention is practically an Internet lottery and that is a source of frustration to me.

Agreed. Except others sharing my opinion is irrelevant. Arguing on the internets would be no fun if you all did. Remember, this is still a shopping site too. I feel obligated to voice my opinion on items I feel are worth the money or not worth the time requested.

I guess what I'm saying here is that the issues you criticize are valid, but your criticisms would be better aimed at gaming media in general, rather than indie developers.

I'm not really attacking the developers directly. I mean, hell, the only way I reference them is by sneering at some fictional "indie" shibboleth. Media critics are a dime a dozen but trying to put some humor/ridicule to the indie label as perceived is, at the very least, cathartic to me and maybe put enough light to the silliness of using indie as anything but an adjective to describe a game that was not published.

Video game journalists are only most reliably motivated by money and by ego, the sense they are doing something important. None of us can do much of anything about the money and I don't aim for equilibrium on that end anyway. The indie perception is something more in our hands.

Either way, I would quibble with you on what outweighs what but then we would reach pure pedantry. I think we agree on most things but are coming from different directions.

Limbo actually was published. Microsoft paid a lot for exclusivity. Which is a statement of a lot of things. What? I don't really know. I am running out of steam for this argument.

That said, to answer your last question. No, it is unconscionable that anyone could like anything that I don't like. Absolutely inconceivable and anyone whose tastes differ from mine must be corrected.
