CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Last edited by a moderator:
Steam Gifts has made some changes to bundle games and contributor status:
http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/vUnIE/important-updates-to-contributor-values-and-bundle-games

We rolled out a few important updates to the site today.

 1. The first major change is the way contributor values are calculated. In short, the update limits giveaways that might have originated from a bundle to 20% of your total value (Note: Giveaways created prior to a bundle always receive full value). Please review the threads from earlier in the week for the full details. Keep in mind, we'll continue to improve this system as time goes on.
 2. There's no longer a restriction on what games can be given away, assuming they're not guest passes or beta keys. Anything found in the drop down menu when creating a giveaway is allowed. If you're gifting a game from a bundle, please review that bundle's terms of service to ensure you have permission to do so. If you believe a giveaway needs to be removed, please use the report button. There's no reason to post accusations in the comments, and users doing so may be suspended for inappropriate behavior. We'll review reported giveaways, and remove them if necessary. The new system will ensure contributor values are not overly inflated by bundle games.
Thanks to everyone in the community for all the feedback the past week, and I believe we created a system that's fair for everyone. It still leaves room for improvement, and there are a number of great suggestions in the previous thread we'll be exploring in the coming weeks.
Indeed they did, but with some exceptions. Nuclear Dawn was on the original bundle list, but was removed due to one specific popular and well-known member having given away 200 copies of it, dropping her contributor value over $2000 if it were left on the list. Now I don't mind if bundle games are given full contributor value, but if you implement a system like this you can't give exceptions just because some members lose $2000+ in contributor value and/or are more "popular" or "well known."

Well, that's just the kind of site steamgifts is.

Seems like its one of those sites operated by "cool kids". They enforce rules the way they want them to be enforced, not how they should be enforced.. thus you have stupid crap happen like the example you gave, and with what happened to walkonshadows.

I think they just don't want to piss anyone off.

So when does this affect contributor amounts on your account? My balance hasnt changed at all, I assumed this was moving forward and not retroactive.

So I was playing SOL exodus demo last night and kinda enjoyed it as a basic space shooter. Like an upgraded graphics version of wing commander but more like 2009 graphics. It's in one of the Indie bundles for sale. I have yet to try Evochron Mercenary from my gift list. I even have a retail Freelancer disc that I never played but keep worrying about how dated it may look.

It's already taken affect. If it hasn't changed, then you either havent gifted over $25 in bundle games, or have given a crapton of non-bundle games.
My contributor value already dropped from ~$125 to ~$100

Is there a place you can see what qualifies as a "bundle" game and what doesnt?

From the DEMO I played, Evochron Merc is more hardcore - like say EgoSoft's X3: Reunion, Terran Conflict, and that EgoSoft X series of games.

FREELANCER is a great game and a great way to try to get into Space Sims, if you never been into them before.
If you on modern PC's, make sure you grab the Freelancer Mod Manager, some of Jason's mods (Widescreen Mod), and any other mods you might think you want/need.

why are actual indie bundles the only one that are 75% off and not the individual items in the bundle? wasnt the individual games discounted at 75% too during the summer sale?

No. A few of the games in those bundles weren't discounted at all during the summer sale or very little.
The Book of Unwritten Tales is released

Only a 10% release discount.

Regular price is $19.99 with the sale price coming to $17.99 or you can get the Digital Deluxe with extras on sale for $22.49.
Yes, finally. I've eyeing this for a while now, but the Adventuregamer's shop never has great sales, and of course I'd rather get it on Steam. I will be patiently waiting for this to go on a greater sale in the future.

X3: Reunion and Terran are both great space-sims.
Terran's got a much better interface than Reunion.

Ys Origin might be the best game I got from the summer sale that I've played thus far. The game is just lots of fun and I love it. Also as far as the midweek deal goes, Transformers War for Cybertron is probably the best Transformers game ( I know thats not saying much) But its actually a really good game, and for the price well worth it imo.

Still no one with a review for Book of Unwritten Tales.

I know the CAG philosophy is to buy it as low as possible, but the implications of ALWAYS waiting to buy on the overall gaming community if MORE people followed that rules... I dunno. It'd wreck the whole game industry.

Hmmmmm 10%.... ultimately that's making me wishy-washy.

I won't be buying it early. Not a game I'd play anytime soon, so no dice on getting a review from me.

Seriously considering picking this up also.

I know, however, I will be totally shunned if I pick it up at only 10% off... ;)

I tend to hesitate paying full price for Adventure games because there is usually very little replay value, unless there are multiple paths you take, and/or alternate endings, or you wait long enough so that you forget the puzzles. However, I'm sure that most are usually worth the $20-$30 you'd pay, as many are lovingly crafted, have interesting characters and compelling stories.

Here is the adventuregamers review, who definitely know their stuff: http://www.adventuregamers.com/games/view/16626

Also, the majority of the community over there seem to love it. I believe it won a few Aggie awards for 2011.

I've heard good things about Book of Unwritten Tales.

Nothing wrong with picking it up for $18 in my opinon, still a much cheaper game at release than many. But as for myself, I have a double digit game backlog, so it will merely go on my wishlist for now.

I was going to post the Adventure Gamers review but beaten to it. ;)

They are the ones I always go to for what I consider to be fair reviews for adventure games. It's somewhat of a niche genre and very slow paced for people accustomed to much more action oriented games, which realistically is the majority, so I don't really trust mainstream review sites to 'get' an adventure game.

That said Adventure gamers doesn't pull any punches just because they are fans of the genre and I've seen them call plenty of games out for poorly implemented features.

At any rate, they really liked this game but I am cheap so I will wait.

Don't feel bad like no one is buying games at or near full price. Plenty of people do but if you hang around here you're perspective on that will obviously get skewed.

There is nothing wrong if you pick it up now and play it relatively soon. If you pick it up now and don't get to it until it has gone like 50% off in a Steam Sale, then yeah...

This, buying full price isn't wrong if you will enjoy it and play it right then or soonish.

I still got my 75% off Serious Sam 3: BFE - Standard Edition (only) looming here.
It's $40 USD right now (regular price), so that coupon would give SS: BFE Standard Ed to you for $10 (in case you missed Steam Summer Sale 2012 price for that).
TODAY is the last day my coupon's any good.

Anybody got any interesting coupons to trade for that coupon?
Or just want it, straight up for...NOTHING?

I don't wanna let it go unused and go to waste, if someone actually really wants it...

Yeah, I think it's the first game I bought from the sale that I've actually finished. It's a very good game, sucks for anyone that missed the flash deal on it. Also has pretty good replay value if you choose to play through with the other characters. I admit I suck at the game, but I still managed to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Also, if anyone wants a free Serious Sam 3 75% off coupon, PM me.

Has anyone else had game crashes with Ubisoft games after the uplay update? I mean I'm glad they updated their terrible DRM, but the game crashes aren't welcome. Happening on AC2 for me.
I need a client. Maybe for the mobile stuff that might work for me if some of it's on Android, but for the PC stuff if there is no Steam or Desura at all then I am not interested.

To be fair, neither Steam nor Desura would promise any of these games inclusion based on proof of concept. Still, a promise of keys for download services should they be accepted would have been nice.

Ah, thanks for pointing out that bit. Nuclear Dawn is one of the games I've gifted and I was wondering why my contributor total is higher than the projection they gave over the weekend.

Disappointed that they went this route, but in the long run, I really don't care much if at all about my own "level" with the site.

Well some of the rather extensive to say the least reward tiers had finished games in them like Helena the 3rd (which is on Desura) etc. I saw no mention of a PC based client there. The only thing I saw was iOS codes being given for the mobile stuff.

I realize they are still developing the main games for the Kickstarter but like you eluded to other Kickstarters have promised Steam keys if the games get on there.

That's just way too many games for me to have loose around without a client. They will get lost in the shuffle for sure.

I wish them luck but I am not a spreadsheet person when it comes to my hobby so I need a program to organize for me.
On the topic of Indie bundles, what do you guys think about this....

I think the thing for me is I dislike the idea of paying for games to be made from developers I never heard of before. Like oh here is 9 indie games from 9 people with no weight to them. I mean at least with the Tim Schaffer game, you know he has made good games before, or the wasteland 2 team. Here it's take a chance funding 9 games that may or may not be good.

I guess I have this thing with preordering something that isn't funded already. Like I don't mind preordering a game that has been funded and you know what it has to offer. I don't like paying for a game that will have x feature but only if it makes x dollars. It makes me wonder are they doing it to save money, or is it a cheap way out to say hey we could of spent a week adding in this feature but we wont now and it's your faults.

I don't think many people bought extra copies, mostly because the only time it was 60% off was during the flash deal. It was never a daily and didn't win the community vote, so it didn't get many chances. I've seen it on many peoples wants lists, so I'm sure it's desirable. I bought one copy for myself, but if I could go back and do it over again, I would've bought multiples.

Play Ys Origin next, because I said so ;)

Maybe it's the narrator scientist's soothing tones but I look at Quantum Conundrum with the same sort of curious indifference and slight sneer said scientist addresses you. It isn't Portal, and yet dresses itself as Portal in all the usual ways, but without the top notch writing and atmosphere of Portal, but with quite good voice acting, but with... different puzzles. I cannot yet decide if they are clever yet. Of course, Portal 2 failed to make me feel clever until some of those diabolical fanmade puzzles showed up.

It's charming but uninspiring. I cannot yet decide what to make of it. $9 is an alright price to pay for it, but from the sound of the rather boilerplate pitch for the DLC, I think those of us who bought on Amazon and missed the season pass have no reason to fret missing much.

Ys Origin but remember to grab a soda when you start it. For a game with so much action, the cutscenes are JRPG-style interminable.

Yunica is absolutely adorable though, for, supposedly, a physically impressive woman who carves through more big bad monsters than any of her comrades ever seem to.
