CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
To derail the computing nostalgia derail back to my earlier Android touchpad derail, just want to say getting android on the touchpad was easy. Android is great but I don't stream enough. I still vastly prefer WebOS.
Well the dual boot setup makes it really easy to go back and forth.

If I just surfed and read Zinio magazines or whatever I would probably prefer WebOS but since I am an app whore I greatly prefer Android. The selection between the two just can't compare.

Somebody who actually got the magic cut scene really needs to put a Youtube of that god damned thing up. :whee:

I couldn't find one already up there, though I lol'ed at this Let's Play narrator.
The Complete Pack is $10 at GamersGate right now. Worth it?
If you like RPGs I would say yes. It's party based, so sort of Dragon Age-ish, and there's lots of options to choose from when creating your own character.

The pack has two full games plus an expansion so I think it's a pretty decent deal. It also never goes that cheap on Steam, probably because they don't sell the bundled complete pack, which is kind of annoying but if you're holding out to get it that price on Steam I wouldn't hold your breath.

That is just utter chaos. I really should consider myself lucky that I grew up playing games in the time of cartridge and C drives. I could not imagine waiting for a game, saving up allowance money, driving anxiously to and from the store; and then having to spend the next few days entering in lines of QX 820 DATAARTIST, and so on.
To be fair, the computer stores still had games. Though early on, they came in plastic baggies sometimes. But then we had Origin Systems, with their fancy cloth maps (Ultimas) and such.

The magazines full of code were more like, say, an experiment in a science magazine. You can do it if you want to sort of thing.

I remember coding my own games (from scratch) in Basic. I also taught myself rudimentary machine code while in middle school (seriously... out of a book. talk about melting your mind). Those were the days.
Random & slightly OT question - where do you all like to go to read reviews for games?
I used to peruse IGN reviews but I moved on a few years ago.

After some time away from gaming sites I became privy to Destructoid where the legendary Jim "man-tits" Sterling resides. He's both scathing and humorous which I find amusing.
Random & slightly OT question - where do you all like to go to read reviews for games?
You Tube and CAG. As odd as it sounds, I use you tube kinda as a screening method, look at gameplay, make sure hey I will like x game. Then usually browsing CAG, someone has played x game and has given thoughts on it.

If I am feeling really fancy, I will watch a video review on you tube. I trust people on CAG who I can get a sense of their tastes better than some reviewer who may or may not be getting paid by a company to give a good review of a game.

Battle Chess was ahead of its time. The idea was amusing and the battle animations fun but, on the Commodore at least, you had to wait for each animation to (slowly) load every time a piece got captured. So after a few games, you just turned the animations off which defeated the whole point.

It would have greatly benefited from a hard drive.

I generally try and avoid review sites but I do rely a good bit on Adventure Gamers for reviews of, well, adventure games!

I wonder if there's any other nichey, very specific sort of review sites like that around.

Cheaplikeafox should start a Simulation Gamers review site. :p
Random & slightly OT question - where do you all like to go to read reviews for games?
Games journalism/reviewing is... shall we say "sketchy"? Everyone will disappoint you eventually. Right now, I do a couple things. I look for gameplay videos on Youtube (WTF is..., let's plays, etc). If the game looks like something I might have fun with, then I'll look around to see if there's anything fundamentally broken. Most of the time, someone on here will already have it. So really, my #1 resource is the people right here on this thread.

But let's be honest: we don't actually care about reviews. We're just going to buy every damn thing that comes cheap

edit: Oh, and to answer the question about reviews I use Giant Bomb primarily and sort of absorb info from various other podcasts, reviews, twitter, forum posts, etc. to get a feel for how people like the game. I use Giant Bomb as my main source because it's a small site run by guys that I can relate to. They aren't that far off of my age and their off topic banter hits on things that I know and love. It's all entertainment to me and I get good video game info in the process. It's not that I agree with them all the time, but because it's just a few guys I can learn how they think about games so even when I disagree their opinions are still extremely helpful.

I usually first check out metacritic to get a ballpark idea of whether or not the game is worth researching further. If the scores there are half-way decent then I try to find someone playing the game on youtube with commentary so I can get a better idea of whether or not I think I'd like the game. After all that I'll usually just google a couple reviews for more info if I think I need it. I prefer the blogs first and then lastly IGN/Gamespot for the reviews.

Okay my Virtual Families guy got an internet marriage proposal from a soap maker that he accepted. She moved right in and it gave a nice little quote from Pope John Paul II about marriage being a gift.

Then he went and read his wife's email while she was in the kitchen and found out some dude was congratulating his new soap maker bride for winning $40 in a hot dog eating contest.

Also: This Kickstarter project looks like it might be something up our collective alley (that sounds kinda dirty). Their previous game is on Steam, so maybe we'll see it, even if it is F2P?
I just had a very cool chat with the Head Mod at SteamGifts. I post it below for your consideration. Many of you are aware of my troubles with the site in the past few days, and the site was being discussed in detail even before that in this thread. CQ is an awesome guy. I had never met him before last night, but I agree with the sentiment spoken about him before that he is a very level headed and even tempered person. I have high hopes for the site, especially since it looks like after reading my support ticket, instead of simply penalizing the mods responsible, it seems he'll be removing them outright. That's alot or pressure and added responsibility on CQ, and so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas they wanted me to relay in my next chat with him.

Never tell your password to anyone.
cg: hey
walkonshadows: yes Sir?
cg: how's your day going?
walkonshadows: ok so far, are you about to screw it up with bad news? lol
cg: why would I have bad news?
walkonshadows: because that's usually the question people ask me before they give bad news.
cg: I thought it was 'are you sitting down?'
walkonshadows: that's for really bad news.
cg: Updated your username on steamgifts
walkonshadows: I saw that, but couldn't say thanks cause the topic was closed. but Thanks You.
cg: As for the other ticket, completely agree, the mods are a little aggressive.
cg: Partly my fault, because they are trying to manage a couple hundred thousand people, but at the same time, there's really no reason for some of those comments.
walkonshadows: But they lifted the bans (all 3 of them) early, so I can't say much. Just thought someone should see it. No hard feelings.
walkonshadows: and thankyou for looking at it to begin with, it's obvious you are busy as hell with that site.
cg: It's definitely a challenge.
cg: I think I'll be removing the moderators, and try to handle it myself until they have more tools at their disposal.
cg: Right now they get frustrated, because they have thousands and thousands of support tickets telling them to do this, and
that, while they have limited powers on the site. People point fingers, accuse them of not caring, and they lose their temper.
walkonshadows: how are you going to handle that much more load on your shoulders then?
cg: I'll try to spend another few hours a day handling support tickets.
walkonshadows: the site's only getting bigger by the day, the more automated you make it, the easier.
cg: I try to automate as much as possible.
cg: Removing giveaways, rerolling giveaways, etc, can't really be automated
cg: Allowing users to remove their own giveaways causes some problems. We'd need to setup a limit on the number they can delete, and even then, the entire delete system would need to be recoded first.
cg: There's the issue of points being distributed when giveaways are created, and then if a user spends those points and the
giveaway is removed, what happens? We send that user into the negative points? Also, people trolling, 'hey, I'm giving away
valve complete pack', and then right before it ends, they remove it.
cg: With rerolling giveaways, we can't have users constantly rerolling their winners on their won. We get the issue of 'hey, I
won that giveaway fair and square, why was it given to someone else?'
cg: *on their own
walkonshadows: couldn't checking the accounts for whether the winner posted the game to his account be automated? That would cut down on some tickets, the ones that claim winner never recieved, and you could prevent people regifting by locking out
being able to put up (relisting) a game won for 3 months or so. I had the thought that the point system should be based off of what you put up to giveaway, but I see problems with that as well.
cg: A number of games don't appear on Steam accounts, mostly DLCs. For those, we really have no way to verify if it was
redeemed. Unless of course we add them as a friend, go through the checkout process of sending them that DLC, and see if Steam
gives an error saying they already own it.
walkonshadows: This has actually been a deep discussion on CheapAssGamer since the new rules on bundle keys, would you mind if I poll them to see if anyone has better ideas, get back toy you?
walkonshadows: completley cutting out mods is going to be quite the undertaking.
cg: I follow most of the cag threads
cg: Signed up the other day, waiting for posting permissions
cg: I try to keep up with all the topics on cag, gog, reddit, giantbomb, etc
cg: Usually just lurk, and keep an eye out for suggestions and what people like/dislike
walkonshadows: I will say that after my first Steam Summer Sale, I ended up with pretty much everything I wanted, so I started
contributing more that entering giveaways. I hope the contributor system does go away, it encourages people to create more of the reason people go to the site to begin with. At the same time, there will always be people trying to take advantage and exploit.
walkonshadows: oops, meant to say "does not go away"
cg: Yep, I think we'll keep it around
cg: We'll see how the new update works out
walkonshadows: I wish you luck. Dinner's here. It's been a pleasure cq.
cg: Thanks for the feedback, enjoy your dinner
walkonshadows: chicken strip basket from DQ, no worries.
walkonshadows: :)
cg: haha, see ya
I'm really glad to see this was resolved in your favor. You getting suspended like that was completely outrageous. So outrageous in fact, that it's hard to imagine that it was simply a mistake on the mod's part. Thankfully it looks like CG is a pretty cool guy and he corrected the mistake for you. Kinda sucks that he's gonna have to take all the mod responsibilities onto himself. Hopefully he's found a way to make a few bucks off of the whole steamgifts/steamtrades enterprise.

It's kinda interesting though that you guys discussed the topic of allowing people to delete their own giveaways. I had considered suggesting that on the forums. My thought was that it would allow people who might have mistakenly created a giveaway (or created one for the wrong item) to be able to simply delete it themselves once they realized their mistake and save the mods some trouble. It hadn't occurred to me that people would abuse that power to troll people. Sadly, he's probably right about that.

BigSpoonyBard and rest of CAG should check this game out.

Minecraft has never interested me, but Castle Story looks like my childhood coming back to life (lol, didn't know how to phrase it). Kinda confusing on the pricing structure; it seems like at $25 you get the 'alpha' version of the game (which for some reason they call it 'prototype' to reflect the fact that they cut out some features due to stability). If you pay $15+ you get access to the beta and the final game according to July 28th Update. Hope this game doesn't turn out to be a dud, and hopefully has some pvp and co-op features. Can you imagine a CAG castle?

Damn, that is the cheapest I've seen them. I've been holding out for a better price than the usually 50% off on Winter/Summer sales. They never hit the magical 75%/$5 point during sales. Ugh, I think I'm going to wait it on Steam, or snap one sale and just buy them on Steam.

One of the main reasons I read CAG is because there's bound to be someone that's tried whatever particular game is on sale. The only problem is there's almost always the "This game sucks, don't waste your time..." and the "...despite the reviews, I had a blast with it..." comments. Seems there's always a CAG that likes a bad game or a CAG that hates a good game.

Gamespot, IGN, Gamesradar, giantbomb, youtube, and just plain googling the name works for me. :whistle2:|

I like to check Gametrailers reviews first - I don't necessarily agree with all their review points, as they pretty much follow wherever the rest of the journalist hype wagon goes, but I love being able to see various parts of the game in action (as they divide it into story, design, gameplay, etc).

Then for actual opinions, I tend to check out Giant Bomb as they don't mind stating their own thoughts rather than just following what everyone else thinks. This sometimes backfires for them when a game is deeper than they originally gave them credit for (Spec Ops: The Line) or a game is overall not as liked as one particular person may have hyped (Syndicate), but I appreciate their honesty.

As gauche as it may sound, I tend to follow IGN and Gamespot for my reviews. When they are full of crap it's usually obvious so you can get a good read easy. Then, dig up negative reviews at GameFAQs or Metacritic. Quickly scan complaints and weigh them for whine factor. Get a pretty good aggregate that way.

Don't have the attention span for video reviews. Using video to present something that could be written and read quicker is awful.

Oh yeah, I love ZP :) Just don't take the reviews too seriously, as even Yahtzee admits in Extra Punctuation each week that he just brings up points that made him mad originally, even if it was his own fault (he often blames mechanics or concepts that he messed up himself or that can be turned off/on in options and configuration).

If it makes you feel any better, The Chains of Satinav takes place in the same world as Drakensang, though it's an adventure game, not an RPG.

There's also a Drakensang Online which surpisingly doesn't look too terrible for a browser based MMO. :p

Anyway, The Dark Eye is basically German's D&D so there should be other games set in that world that may come out in the future though a direct sequel to Drakensang is highly unlikely.

That totally sounds like something I would buy!
Ah! that makes sense for some reason I thought Drakensang was the system and The Dark Eye was the games title :D

I'll have to wishlist the Chain of Satinav and wait for a price drop, I mean 30$ they must think were European or something
The Complete Pack is $10 at GamersGate right now. Worth it?
If you enjoyed Dragon Age Origins it is very much worth it; I think it is even highly superior to Dragon Age and reminds me of Baldurs Gate 1. Lots of exploring and helping our different villages set in different locales and only half way through the first game at 40 hours. I ended up paying 25$ for the "complete" collection from Steam during the winter sale and just the first game was easily worth that price.

So for 10$ if your ok with no steam is a steal for two 80+ hour Icewind Dale/Baldurs Gate inspired RPG's. I mean just picking my class took several hours as there is like 20 to choose from. Even pirates and mage school dropouts are a option.

I grabbed it. The "Not on Steam" thing doesn't mean much to me and I've spent $10 on worse things so why not give it a shot. Of course, right now my time is all being taken up by SR3 and Civ5 but a man's gotta have options.

Are both games equally worth playing or is this going to be one of those DA:O / DA2 sort of things?
