CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Thanks! haha

Man, I would have jumped on Ticket to Ride in an instant if the DLC was on sale too. I already have this on the 360 and was hoping to be able to get the game and all of the DLC for cheap. Blah. Poop.

Oh well.
However, even a minimum account age is a short term fix, since people will open an account and let it idle until a giveaway here.
Right, I mean we pretty much saw that with the CAG Steam group that people will just join a group in advance that they have no intention to participate with if that particular group is known for doing giveaways.
User Ranks/Privileges
CAG Ultra Noob: 0-2 days - can't do much of anything
CAG Newbie: 2-29 days (cannot use signature or create threads in Trading Forum)
CAG in Training: 30-269 days
CAG Veteran: 270-364 days and/or 250+ posts (can add images to signature)
CAGiversary!: 365 days and beyond and 50+ posts (can create custom titles)
Restricting giveaways to Veteran and above seems like a fair solution that would be easy to code. You'd still have leechers and people spamming to get them, but 250 posts is a hell of a lot of spam and 9 months is quite the commitment to wait for free stuff.
Post count would just encourage a lot spamming and useless posts.

I think you're right when you say people are dicks and there's not a good way to police that.

Reminds me of when I was in the Ultima Online beta years ago (we're talking the 90s here). At one point there were no guards and really nothing in place to prevent people from being jerks except their own conscience so people would camp out at the spots where the new characters spawned and slaughter them as soon as they logged in and then take all their stuff.

People will be jerks just because they can.
Yeah, when I suggested post count, I realized that spamming would be an issue as well. But I figure that's more easily policed, both by mods and by actual regulars, than account age.

I also considered rep, but I figure that'd be fairly easy to bypass, and I'm sure there are some of us regulars who probably don't have a high rep standing either, so it's not really a good method.

I'd like to think, though, that there'd be at least some way to limit it to 1 per account. But then you just have people creating multiple accounts.

Yeah, I don't know. It sucks, and there doesn't seem to be a good solution.
I really do support a minimum time to have had a CAG account in order to participate in the freebies.
Anything like that is useless, people will sign up knowing that down the line they'll be open to freebies.

You see that trend with spammers also, they'll sign up at a ton of sites and post here or there and then a year or so in they'll start linking spam.

Yes, it sucks and people are exploiting it, but it should just be the start of ironing out the bugs and kinks and building it into something sweet. Almost any company or group has to grin and bear it when they give out stuff for free. They want word to get out! They want people to enjoy it! It is too bad they aren't giving CAG or Amazon credit for the codes, but again, everyone is learning how to do this better. There will be a number of people who find about about CAG because of this and join in. There will be others that hop into Amazon's f2p packages. Far more will not. That's just how advertising works.

I got Dead Space 2 and Duke Nukem for free off Amazon and I bought other games after that. I started my steam account when Portal was free and you know how that went!

I really hope te CAG giver replaces my use of steam gifts. I'd actually like SG more if it has less rules and no contributor counter. A little more wild west.

Ah, the days before Vendor Spawn Bank Guards and various other alternatives people used.

How'd you get DS2 for free?

Been a long time lurker and a once in a blue moon poster, but I thought I'd join in and give my perspective. I really value the community here; the thoughts on games, ability to disagree/agree respectfully, and the recommendations given.

As for being a lurker, a lot of this is because I'd like to give meaningful posts, and feel shy about sharing opinions with the internet to freely disagree.

Now, as for my thoughts on free keys? If something is thrown out for free, whether it's to promote something or to be charitable, whatever the reason, as soon as it's in the hands of the other person the giver no longer has a right to tell the other person what to do with it. When presented with the opportunity to buy a homeless guy a meal or give him a couple bucks, I'll buy him a meal. But on those off hand chances that I've given a couple bucks, there's no way I can say "Here, just don't buy alcohol or smokes with what is now your money."
Is it unfair that people use it to bump up contributor status on steamgifts?
Yeah, it is.
But how is that different than buying a bunch of humble bundles for .50 each and boosting it that way?

I'm a cheap ass, any bundle I buy I keep for myself.

One method we could use is to put a disclaimer when you try to get the code that says
"For personal use only, no redistribution"
If you then inform the steamgifts admins about it, they might start banning people like they did with bundle keys.

Not entirely true. If you get free stuff and there are TOS/other stipulations attached, the giver can tell the receiver what to do.

Rise of the Triad remake
:bouncy: That's amazing Rise of the Traid was the first FPS I ever played it was on one of those "over 600 games!" CD's I got from like Office max as a kid. Of course all 600 games were basically just demo's, In fact the only level I've ever played from RoFT is the first level.

Well, the only clear solution is to just give me all of your extra codes and gifts and I'll hold on to them. It will be like steamgifts. Except that, you know, better than steamgifts, you know, cause steamgifts always gets abused and Preedatore will always redeem.
But how is that different than buying a bunch of humble bundles for .50 each and boosting it that way?
There are a couple of different things that come into play, and I think part of it depends on some thing that I think are currently unknown. Or at least, I don't know them.

The primary being if the codes they're giving away are limited in quantity or not.

If they are, then it's not like the humble bundle, because it's something of a zero-sum game. Everytime someone takes a code, that's 1 less code in the pile for everyone else. If they're not going to use that code, they potentially deprive someone who actually wanted to use it of the chance to use it. Hopefully, by this time everyone who wants one of those already has it, but there's no guarantee of that, and really, it doesn't matter, because we should always assume that someone else out there actually wants it to use it.

If there are an unlimited number of codes, then it's slightly more acceptable, I think, but still annoying/frustrating that people are just taking them and spamming them all over the place. In this scenario, there's not really any damage done to anyone, because those who actually want it for it's intended purpose still has the ability to get it, but you still end up with a ton of "CAGs" who come into the site for nothing more than something free, and then leave.

I think the reason a lot of people are annoyed is because in some sense, they want to view the codes as "rewards" for being an active member of the site. We're here, we're a part of the community, and as such, we get some benefits, such as the occasional free thing. If there are others out there who end up getting our free stuff without being one of us, it's a bit jarring and frustrating, especially if the number of codes is limited, and they're potentially preventing actual members of the community from getting them.

Whether that's a valid point of view, I'm not entirely sure. I know that I've done something similar - I managed to grab a free code for A Virus Named Tom yesterday from Reddit, having created my account specifically for that purpose. So I'm certainly not one who can really complain without being a hypocrite.

But I don't think it's about the boosting so much as it is about the free-form grabbing of codes for those who aren't regulars of the site. There isn't so much a Humble Bundle community (at least that I'm aware of), so it's a different beast comparing one to the other.

I disagree! Kidding. But I know how it goes. People say all kinds of things, especially on the internet but If you want to speak your mind then go for it. :)

Now, as for my thoughts on free keys? I agree to a point and yet feel like there's go to be a way to automate giving a hamburger vs giving a couple of dollars. I guess you could make someone login through Steam to check if they had it, but that precludes the people who plan to get it in the future. Every potential solution I can think of makes things more complicated and restricted and probably gets further away from the spirit of the giveaway so I suppose just give knowing you had good intentions and let the reciever do what their conscience agrees with is probably the easiest solution.

Of course I also think Amazon would be better served just doing a better job at putting DLC on sale, which they rarely do, vs giving it away.
I think if I remember correctly didn't someone even kill Lord British, the guy who made Ultima, in the game during one of his speeches?
Yes they did. I was there (virtually) when it happened and laughed my ass off. A bunch of people organized a 'stand-in' protest (because you couldn't sit yet at that point) over the conditions of the game and Garriot logged in. I guess after the server went down and came back up his invincible flag got reset and no one realized it so some dude throw used flame wall spell at him and he went down.

I feel like whenever something is given out for free the giver should acknowledge that the random receiver could unfortunately take that gift with the intent of redistribution. People will always find ways to abuse the system and it's something difficult control. I do think things like redistribution of giveaways won and things like hoarding games on sale to up contributor status fall into different levels of abusing the system. One just feels more unpleasant from a moral standpoint. I hate seeing good will go to bad waste.

That trailer sold me on the game. It's sad when we have come to the point where I get super excited for a fps just for the fact that it's not generic modern military crap.

Also to weigh in on the matter. Yeah there has to be some type of restrictions on gifts/giveways and such. Even a 6-7 month account lock and post requirements (a small post requirements like 100-250) to weed out people who are scumbags. I mean taking one code is fine, taking 3-5 codes just to bump up your steam gifts rating is just scum. I have at least one game that I would do a SG giveaway for but I don't want to use SG because I don't want it to go to some random asshole.

You know it's hard to find someone that didn't like Call of Duty 4 but I'm pretty jaded by the onslaught of crap that keeps coming our way these days. We just want something between Battlefield 3/Black Ops 2 and ARMA II. Something that's got a fair amount of action without being ridiculously over the top. At this point it seems like Call of Duty might as well merge with Fallout since there won't be anything left if they drop one more nuke.

CheapyD said the code machine can limit who can get codes, but it's specifically set up for this giveaway based only on having a CAG account. He wanted it that way for now. It won't always be like that.

I've never played CoD4 (or any CoD, for that matter) so I can't say I liked it. Of course, I can't say I didn't like it either.

One of these days maybe I'll take a look and see what all the fuss is about with all those games.

I'm glad people are making the distinction between lurker and...leecher (and the subsequent difficulty that comes with determining who falls where). What tangible thing can people do to prove their worthiness to CAG overlords?

I suppose I should try them one day just so I can legitimately say I don't like them, but honestly pure FPS games are just generally not my thing anyway and then when you add modern military sort of simulation to it, well I can honestly that genre is the lowest on my list in terms of interest. I would rather play Bad Rats.

I made that distinction because there is a big difference. I myself was a lurker for awhile for alot of the reasons many of you have stated (didn't feel as if I had anything to add, etc.), and I do think all people should be treated equally, but balanced/weighed against what they chose to do with that respect....Oh! lunch is here....damn this Chik-Fil-A is good! Why does bigotry have to be so damned delicious!?! I'm sorry, what were we talking about?

Yeah, my dad has sunk hundreds and hundreds of hours in MW2, so when it was $5 on amazon once I bought it just to see what he likes so much about it. Keep in mind he never touches the multiplayer portion of the game.

Meh. It felt like a super generic army shooter. Go here, shoot this, then go there and blow that up. It was entertaining enough for $5 though, I guess.

And I love FPS's/shooters. I felt $5 was a fair price, but I would never pay $60 for a call of duty game.

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about that too. The biggest news (as far as this thread is concerned) is that the game will be Steamworks and feature achievements and Steam Workshop support. And since it uses the highly-popular and accessible Unreal Engine 3/UEd the game has really high moddability potential! I hope more games follow suit and use Steam Workshop.
Dawnguard is up on steam... 20$ ouch! Gonna play cheapass on that for sure...
No surprise. That's what it was on 360. As someone who just started playing Skyrim a few weeks ago and is nowhere near needing new content, there's no way I'm paying full price.

edit: Just checked. 44 hours in and I feel like I've done nothing in the game. I have like 20 quests going on, not to mention miscellaneous, and haven't even looked around at a couple of the cities yet.

It's also part of the Elder Scrolls pack. $64 for Morrowind GOTY, Oblivion GOTY, Skyrim, and Dawnguard. No savings. No point.

Well, I don't play COD for multiplayer at all and just like playing for the story believe it or not. With a family around to keep me busy, it's like an interactive movie unfold on my own time. I played MW1-3 a few times on SP only.

You know, any other game I'd agree but for as many hours as I've gotten out of Skyrim, and I'm not even near done, I really don't mind.

Plus I'm an old ES fan from way back in the olden DOS days.
Yeah, my dad has sunk hundreds and hundreds of hours in MW2, so when it was $5 on amazon once I bought it just to see what he likes so much about it. Keep in mind he never touches the multiplayer portion of the game.

May I mind asking what you dad does in terms of a job? I always find it fascinating when I meet parents who game more than their children (not implying that that's the relationship that your father and you hold, but it's something that I rarely see. I guess it's just that I'm not used to seeing anyone in the older generations whom actually stuck to gaming--yet.).

Edit: Oh snap! Ys Origins download finished. Shall be playing when I'm done with my duties, either today or tomorrow.

Yes. Ticket to Ride is on sale. That was the one game that I was really looking forward to buying during the summer sale. I am glad I didn't have to wait long for it to go on sale. I highly recommend that you should pick this game up.

I'd definitely pick it up if I had finished Skyrim, but as I'm farm from that, I can easily wait for a sale. I'm more tempted by dishonored, but same logic applies (but damn do I wanna clikc that buy button).
