CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Am I the only one who just keeps all their software on a NAS so it's always available? Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up.
I'm saying I don't keep it all installed. I built my computer before coming to college, at the time using a smattering of hard drives that I've filled up with other sorts of hoarding along with games. That was four years ago and I still don't have the money or sense to grab a TB drive and toss it in to dedicate to my game collection. Steam and GoG are two services with easy to keep track of libraries for when games are not installed.

But that is an admirable system of organization.
Thanks.

I don't have all my games installed on my PC. I don't have THAT kind of room. ;) I only got 2 TB of HDD space on this current PC (Two 1GB HDD's = total of 2 TB).

I figured it out, when I got this new PC. B/c I own so many games from so many different digital services, I had to come up for me w/ an easier system of figuring out where my games got installed to. Since I buy so many places, it was easiest for me to go w/ this kind of system.

On my older Win XP PC, I had so many games scattered everywhere, it was often a pain to find games folders; figure out what DRM said game used in that version; if I had a revoke tool, where saves were located, what mods I was using for said game; etc etc.

I am often lazy and just DO NOT uninstall things - especially if a game has DLC, expansions out or coming eventually.
Get ready for super disappointment! I loved the first season....mostly....but season 2 took it upon themselves to pull a Lost and decide the show was 99% character development. Now I'm not one to say I wanna see just mindless Zombie attacks (as was the argument my friend tried to make a against me when I bashed the stupid character development shit)....but it is you know, A fuckING ZOMBIE SHOW. I mean when every episode has less than 10% of it featuring zombies, something is wrong.
I really don't see why people praise this show. Yes, the first season was fine, I didn't really grow to like any of the characters, but over all I was willing to see it as a "slow start." But the second season was obnoxiously droll, not to mention dragged on at a snail's pace. Now I have no problem with character development, in fact I LOVE it. Shows like Deadwood, A Game of Thrones, etc... are mainly character driven with slow-burning and climax-building action sequences thrown in to end/start various plots. However, the difference is those shows have deep and intriguing characters (whether they're likeable or not) that keep the audience entertained and interested. Not only that, but as these character's grow they are put into (usually hazardous) situations/conflicts that the viewers love to see them worm their way out of.

The problem with the Walking Dead characters' is that not only are the majority selfish idiots (okay that maybe just my opinion), but that there is rarely any conflicts. Sure they have domestic conflicts galore (baby daddy issues anyone?), so much so that it turns soap opera-ish at times, but when it comes to the show's main appeal: surviving in a zombie apocalypse, there is very little connection, and thus very little going on of interest. Case in point: once they hit the farm, little occurs and the show becomes boring because everyone is safe. There is no impending danger to motivate the group so things become stagnant and the character's become complacent and default to squabbling over domestic issues: who should do laundry, who should be able to use a gun, who should be allowed to go grocery shopping, etc... And then of course when they try to go something, the writer's come up with a tired old zombie-human ethics plot-twist (ie: barn scene) which if you're a horror or zombie enthusiast is nothing new to the genre.

Ah, its just all so very dull and contrived. I really wish zombies would go away for awhile.

Sorry for the long post and the fact that no one is talking about this anymore, but I just caught up with the thread and needed to vent. End of rant. :whistle2:#
So I know where the heck most of my games are, if I need to find them.
Especially if I have to use the game folder for mods; putting save games in that folder; finding saves games; or what have you.
Much easier to also know what version I have, too.
Sometimes, different versions use different patches or have different DRM's - especially in the OLD days and w/ OLDER games.

Nothing is more annoying than trying to figure out where a game is put by default, if you don't change it. Sometimes, it's put in the weirdest place.
Example -> Vampire: Bloodlines, which I own from Retail.
Originally, I think it actually goes by default into Program files (x86)\Activision\Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines.
I don't always remember where the games go by default.
Much easier for me that I toss it in Program files (x86)\Retail\VTMBL-WespBasic.
Yes, sometimes, I'll even note if I'm using a mod in the folder if I want certain versions in certain folders, too.
Oh, ok, for accessing the directories and whatnot. I used to do that, but now I just let them install wherever they want. If I need to get at a directory, I right-click on the shortcut from the start menu and hit "go to file location".

I do, but only with programs that I install frequently. I format and reinstall Windows at least once a year on my main machine, so there's a small number of critical licensed apps that I keep available. I also mirror that directory to a large thumb drive that's always with me. For Steam games, they download so fast and I rotate them so frequently, it doesn't matter if I have them locally.

So you play games that were installed on the NAS?

Wouldn't that slow down loading noticeably?

Yup - that works fine, as well. :)

Sometimes, though - if a game install itself doesn't create a shortcut itself; and say I forget to create a shortcut - yeah, I have to go hunting for the folder so I can manipulate it...!

I don't always remember where things go. Since I changed how I install things since I putting this new rig together (a little over a year ago), I do ALWAYS find my file locations! :)

I should note, I'm always in My Computer/Windows Explorer/whatever the hell Microsoft decides to call it next time around...

Yep, been that way for an hour or more now... :(
Anyone having trouble connecting to Steam community features?
You can do a similiar trick within Windows 7, by taking 2 (or more) seperate disk and making them combined with a software RAID. For games that we can re-download and backups aren't that critical of that data (not talking about saves here people) it would combine alot of smaller disc (like the 2 320 GB 7200's I have) into a "single" drive that windows sees like a regular disc. You get the speed boost of a regular RAID (even though it's technically a JBOD array with parrallel stripping) and instead of spending money a TB drives, you can make your own. it's true that if one drive dies, you would have to reformat the remaining drives and start over, but that isn't a real concern since most of us don't keep the entire catalog we have installed all the time anyway. Just FYI. Someone might find it helpful. one off those lesser known features of Win 7.

I'd expect frothy-mouthed rage over a mid-sale price change, though such cases are admittedly fun to watch.

Right there with ya. I used to be anti-DD. If I buy something, I want to be able to hold it, and I put up shelves in the computer room to line the space with my collection of computer game boxes. But Steam and its deals has helped me embrace the inevitable future of gaming to the point where I'm probably going to buy New Super Mario Bros. 2 digitally for the bonus Club Nintendo Coins.

Granted, the coins will go toward something that I can hold and put up on a shelf...

The Walking Dead is best in paper form. It's one of my favorite comic series. I read all the medium size collections as they are released. And yes, it's about how the people act and change because of the harsh scenario, and there are zombies.

That being said I still do like the show, it just could have gone from good to great. Also I swear that the worst possible thing that could happen always happens in that show. If there is ever a possibility for more then one outcome you can pretty much bet that it will always be the bad outcome.
As someone who's been sexually harassed, not by just one person, but an entire group who thought they were allowed to do so themselves because our boss engaged and encouraged them too, I can understand why she forfeited the game rather than take it. I want to say she should have stuck it out, if not for her than for the other girls who would have looked up to her as inspiration to carry through. But as someone who's been on the receiving end. i totally get it, and would never ask anyone to go through that for any reason. At the end of it all, noone should ever feel as if they should HAVE to make that choice to begin with.
The article is a little mis-guided. It's not because gaming is a "boys club". It's because people are stupid. And given any situation where the authority in charge of protecting everyone they are responsible for (the coach in this instance) engages in the very same behavior, it magnifies the situation many times over.
Oh I agree with how "Shallow" I guess the article is and how much deeper it could go into online communties, which really just boils down to a lot of people are dicks online(Well even offline as well), But just find it amazing that The New York Times is dealing with video game news and issues. Must be a sign of the times and how 30-40 year olds are now the readership and grew up with games.
Walking Dead isn't a show about zombies, it's a show about people who've been caught in a zombie outbreak.
I love Walking Dead mostly because it does deal with the drama and, "soap opera" story telling. Then again I also watch, "The Bachlorette" and I used to watch "Passions" soo not sure that helps our case or not for The Walking Dead
Also I swear that the worst possible thing that could happen always happens in that show. If there is ever a possibility for more then one outcome you can pretty much bet that it will always be the bad outcome.
I love this part of it. It may not make the best writing but it sure is entertaining.

It's the same reason I love Clive Cussler, because the stakes are so high and practically every chapter has a cliffhanger ending. I also love The Hunt For Red October because the stakes are so high and conversations are like old west duels, any one can go for their weapon at any time. Oh, and Kill Bill when he's making a sandwich with the biggest knife possible adds so much tension, but then he never users it.

The stories I wrote back in school were never good because the characters were all nicey nice to one another. When things go bad it gets good.

It seems most the plots and parts of the walking dead that they make up on the show are a lot worse than when they stick closer to the comic. I can't stand the guy that plays Rick and the way he talks.

I really don't care for any of the characters on the show and the comics just killed off the last 2 I liked rather recently. I actually like the protagonist from the game more than most the characters in the TV/comic. Most the people I liked in the comics died during the first 50-60 issues.

Anyways mainly just came in here looking for and was going to ask about Titan's Quest. Was goign to buy and gift one maybe. Probably going to be a last minute purchase as the clock runs down.
Walking Dead isn't a show about zombies, it's a show about people who've been caught in a zombie outbreak.
To be fair, that's true about all good Zombie media. The original Romero films were entirely about societal issues of the time (racism, sexism, consumerism, etc.) and how people deal with them after society falls apart. Zombies should always be used as a catalyst. Because as a monster/threat, they're sorta dull.

I don't have a problem with the characters or pace. If you're expecting something else then yeah you're gonna be disappointed. I went into it without expectations and have enjoyed it thoroughly. I guess I'm trying to say I think it's good if you take it for what it is instead of criticizing it for what it's not. You can probably say the same thing about most TV shows, I don't know... I just like it.
Don't apologize for a well-written and thoughtful post lol

I didn't like the few episodes of that show I watched either. Which sucked, because I LOVELOVELOVE zombie movies. I had the same problem with it that I had with Battlestar Gallactica (which I loved anyway). In BSG, you had all of these ridiculous scenes where, for example, a throng of angry reporters angrily shouting angry questions at the president and being generally angry. Angry about *politics*. Not that they were the last surviving members of their species, not that they were being chased down and killed by rebellious robots - they were angry about *politics*.

The Walking Dead gave me the same impression. I don't care about the characters true motivation, or their complex and tormented their background story is, other than what I learn while they're dodging and killing zombies. I want them doing what I would be doing: being 100% focused on the fact that there are millions of zombies outside. NOT talking about feelings all the damn time.

/wanders away to watch DayZ videos, muttering about the evils of Hollywood...
Well, I didn't feel too bad about ranting, but I didn't want to deter the thread away from steam talk, like it looks like I've done. :)

I haven't seen BSG yet but I did see a few episodes of Caprica, which except for a few set pieces, also suffered from dullness and a writer(s) that didn't quite know where they were going with the series (or in this case how to connect it to BSG).
Walking Dead isn't a show about zombies, it's a show about people who've been caught in a zombie outbreak.
Yeah, I know, but when your show is based in that type of setting (a major plot point in its own right), you think it would have some kind of connection to it other than: "Oh we have to keep those darn zombies off the farm!" Seriously, its like the writers equate them with a cockroach infestation that only should be mentioned once and awhile to rile things up.
I only got to see the first season. It was okay, but not impressive. Course, most things zombies tends to easily grab my attention.

Yes, this. I''m glad I'm not the only one who doesn't care for these characters. I was so starved for different faces that I rooted for what were obviously a couple baddies (saloon scene) in the second season who stumbled onto the group.
Walking Dead isn't a show about zombies, it's a show about people who've been caught in a zombie outbreak.
The real problem, as I see it, is that the title itself confuses almost everyone. "The Walking Dead" does NOT really refer to the zombies, in fact, it is more in reference to the "main characters" themselves. They are in fact, "the walking dead" when you stop and think about everything going on in the "world" the show is taking place in.

tempted on getting titan quest just to see whats up... but i already have diablo 3 and torchlight... aahhhh! decisions!

Titan Quest is sooooo worth it.

My problem with The Walking Dead TV show is it suffers from SCS (Stupid Character Syndrome). When I watched the show I would constantly yell (or think) at the TV, "No! Don't do that!" And the character would and bad stuff would happen because of it. Sure, they have to create tension and raise the stakes, and they have succeeded at times, but the characters in the comics always seem to act more like they are actually in a situation where bad decisions could lead to their deaths.

That said, everything but the writing is pretty good in the show, which is surprising, because it is the writing the keeps the comics good. The acting is mostly really good, and when they have a tense scene like the
shootout in the bar
it is really well done and very exciting. And scenes like that are mostly possible because
they are killing off different characters sometimes.

Now that the TV show
seriously spoilers here
has introduced Michonne and cast the Governer, I am excited to see if it can get as dark and intense as the comics, like cutting off Rick's hand and killing off his wife and baby and almost every major character in one scene, although it will probably still feel the need to spell everything out for the viewer ie. Carl getting all dark and killing the other kid and all that crap.

Can some of you more seasoned PC Gamers help me? Does one need both the disc and key to activate Skyrim on Steam or can one merely have the key? I did find information about registering 3rd party keys on Steam. Skyrim is included, but is the disc also required?

All you need is the key.

Done! Bought it! $5 is alright! Now to find time when to play it. Haha
Although it is extremely flawed it still is better than 90% of the shit that is on TV. Though there are some shows on TV right now that are pretty amazing- I'm looking at you Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and Community.

I'm still waiting for Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne to be released on Steam.

Hey, at least your BL looks sexier now.

Ok. Thank you. I have Skyrim on Xbox and now I have a Skyrim key. I did not know if I could trade the key or if I had to ship the disc. I appreciate your help.

Wow, I never thought about it that way. That's pretty cool.

To be clear I wasn't bashing the show. Like I said before, I love character-driven fiction, and was really rooting for it in the beginning, but it just failed to click for me. Maybe it's because I'm so jaded when it comes to zombies. But there are definitely enough people watching that love it, so what do I know?

Heck, I'll at least watch the first episode of the third season to see
who that mysterious cloaked person is

Btw, Spyder, that metaphor is so easy I feel stupid for not seeing it.

Oh, I hope that happens. That sounds very interesting. And hey, Breaking Bad gets dark, so why not? And SCS if a very good way to put it. You think people in a zombie outbreak would be more aware.

I think the best shows on TV right now are probably Homeland and Sons of Anarchy. I would normally include Dexter but last season wasn't what it should be. Thrones is great too.

Sorry for going off topic in the Steam thread!

Sort of along the lines of kerouac kid's question. I've used the keys from a couple of games that I bought physical copies of (Prey & the Half Life 1 collection) and activated them on my steam account. Would I ever be able to use those discs again if I lost my mind and decide to just abandon steam?

If they're useless, I'm wondering if I should just throw the boxes/discs out.

Rick actually says this in the comic (around 20somethingish).

As I sad before, I like the comic, I liked the little I have played of episode 1 (waiting for halloween sale to pick it up), but I am unsure about the show. I watched most of season 1 before bailing (mainly due to the commercials), but I will give it another chance by getting season 2 from netflix.
I admit. I do have pretty low expectations - for many of the reasons people have mentioned. I just hate how just about every show on TV seems to try to appeal to everyone. Zombie shows don't NEED family drama. Action shows don't need romance (I'm looking at you season 2 of Human Target [even though I really liked Season 1 of that show]).
I also got really irritated at certain things - like all the discussion on who should carry a gun in Walking Dead - the answer is EVERYONE - there are freaking zombies walking around everywhere! It's a completely fabricated moral dilemma. Its ridiculous.
I roll my eyes and laugh at some plot holes, but sometimes I just give.
Oh, and I realize I am in the minority on this one, but I actually don't mind the guy who plays Rick in the TV show all that much. My GF HATES him, but I really don't think he does all that bad a job.

I enjoyed the convo but most of the time someone gets all pissed off and tells you to shut up.
