CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Wow, I'm tempted by all the deals - Payday, CS:GO and Nimbus. I'll have to think on it...
Nimbus was in the Indie Royale Launch Bundle. You may be able to find someone with a key who will let it go for less than the sale price.

Annnd Arma II sales suddenly drop 10,000%.
People posting games that they want rather than games they have and when people call them out on it they usually claim they were "hacked".
Is there a point to doing this? You won't get the credit for it because obviously the winner won't click off that they received it. I'm sure there's some idiotic reason they do it but I'll be damned if I can make sense of it.
Hm. I replayed this same run in the second chapter (trying to get to Lovers' Point) 5-6 times this morning before work. What's aggravating to me is that I shot the guy who pops out of the tree and the two that come up right after that and then took off across the bridge, all the while getting hammered by the guy (or guys?) behind me, made it to the light there, which then popped and I died. Oh, and Wake runs like a guy with vertigo and a busted knee.

I'm actually getting close to my uninstall point with this one. I've found it absurdly easy to get overwhelmed by Taken and got into a bind not too dissimilar to this back in Chapter 1 (or Episode 1--I haven't figured out the weird TV-show analogy quite yet).

Is the thermos-collecting immersion breaking? Yeah, I'd say so, but it wouldn't bother me as much if I knew what the hell I was getting all these thermoses for (for that matter, how on Earth does the guy have enough room in his pants pockets for these things?).
Personally, I'm surprised that you've found the game so difficult. The game's events are already hazy for me, but it sounds like you might be running too far away, resulting in more Taken joining the fight. (I believe it's usually around 2-5 of them at a time.) Moving around and shining light aggressively is the best bet.

I recall a time when I worked in a store that offered rentals, and a young man came to me looking for a very simple game. He told me how, when playing Metal Gear Solid, he would continuously get stuck to the walls. (We're talking early 2000's, back when the PS2 was new technology.) His phraseology told me that MGS was just not the game for him; Despite being older than myself, he still couldn't grasp the mechanics. Thus, I felt he needed a game with a more basic control scheme. (I recommended Pac-Man World for the PlayStation.)

I feel this is a similar case - You're finding Alan Wake's mechanics and design far too difficult, and it might be time to choose a different title. If you're not having fun with a game, it's a chore.

That, I feel, misses the point of video games.

I probably notice it so much because I have zero interest in it but I keep seeing it over and over and over. I almost feel like they are trying to wear me down to the point where I just go 'OH ALRIGHT ALREADY I'LL BUY IT! HAPPY!?'

I don't know, maybe if it were sinister evil real clowns instead of of just some bank robber guys dressed up in clown masks it would interest me more.

Haha, I have no idea if there's even a modding community (or even if Payday is mod-able) but ... there might be a mod for that? :p

I feel the same... they're wearing down my resolve with the sheer amount of times it's gone on sale... this time I might just pull the trigger.
Hotswapping would be best for those situations most likely.

Sounds like I'll look into picking one up to replace my sidewinder wheel with game port that I can't plug in or get drivers. How's the compatibility for PC racing games, if one works natively with a regular 360 controller should it work with this?
I hotswap controller/KB+mouse all the time for driving segments in GTA-like games, most recently SR3. In some FPSs, most notably Borderlands, I play with mouse in one hand and left-half of controller in the other (for analog movement).

A hassle-free alternative to the 360 controller that I like is the Logitech F510 or F710. It has a PS3 layout. On the bottom of the controller is a switch to set it in Xinput (360 native), or DirectInput (common pre-360 windows API). So no hassle with emulation software and better support for old games (and support for easy game-specific remapping with Logitech Profiler). I also really appreciate that the button below the start button togges strong/weak/no-vibration (some games really abuse vibration, my hands can't handle constant rumble). The button below select swaps left-stick and D-pad, which has been nice for some retro games. It has a solid rubberized feel.

Sorry it that was kinda rant-y, I have a grudge against the 360 layout going back to the OMG-too-big original X-box controller.

Also if you have a PS3 controller, the free motioninjoy drivers work well. You can hook it up to your computer by USB (any old micro-USB cable) or Bluetooth (some $2 amazon bluetooth controller works well for me).

I have the F510 and really like it, it's a great gamepad and I've had zero problems with compatibility.

To be fair, Payday went a while without being on sale at all. I know because I had my eye on it for a while. Then in like February or March was when it first hit 75% off. Since then it's hit it every month and was even the free game of the month on IGN Prime. But it is a great little game if you like L4D style coop shooters.

My thoughts exactly. I was holding off on playing Alan Wake forever (even though my anticipation was high), bought it during the steam sale and played it for about 30 minutes. The controls ruined it for me.
Has anyone else found the combat in Alan Wake to be a profound source of frustration?
Absolutely not. It's very kinetic. You have to be constantly dodging and have good awareness of your back, tagging people with light where you can. Dropping flares when you get overwhelmed.

I loved it. One of my favorite shooters.

It's official, I suck at Alan Wake.
EDIT: does anybody know whether it's possible to change the difficulty without starting a new game?
If it isn't in the pause menu, you can do chapter select. Chapter select checkpoints happen usually at peace->night transitions so you'd have to do the whole lovers peak hike from the start.

For what it's worth, the cinematic dodge is vitally important as is expecting when the enemies start their attack animations.

I've always been tempted by Payday and may end up picking it up this time around. My backlog is just huge right now though - not sure if I would jump in on it now, or wait a while. I just can't see buying it now if I am not going to play it right away (since you all say it goes on sale so often).
On the other hand, with a game like this, isn't it better to jump in while the community is still strong?
Decisions, decisions...

If you want to do MP right now would probably be the best time to jump in. The new DLC will bring back some players and this is a game you can pick up and play for a map or two and then go do something else, so you shouldn't be worried about it being too much of a time sink.

I've been playing some Stacking today and I have to say this might be the best PC adventure game I've played (note, I really dislike the adventure genre even though I want to like the games). I'm only at the Zeppelin but I definitely recommend it.

So how does this work again? I've been holding SHIFT down to run; are you supposed to tap SHIFT and move? I'm also not sure if I'm shooting enemies when I'm supposed to (so I might be wasting a lot of ammo).

Arg...I can't decide if I want to pay $37.50 for the Darksiders II pre-order. I still haven't played the first. So, I basically have to decide if I want to play the first and second back to back in order to be "part of the conversation" soon after the second game comes out, or if I just want to wait until a sale in 2-4 months...

That explains why people were interested in Arma. I was interested in DayZ but not from purchasing a game to play. Happy news indeed.

I wouldn't call Stacking an adventure game, for me it's more of 3rd person puzzle game. It's quite charming and I like it, but I finished the 2nd level and have yet to get back to it. I made a decision early on to only finish a level only after I've found every solution for each puzzle, and ended up playing the levels for too long.

That being said I am waiting for a sale on this new one.

Yeah I mean the first one is a good game and all but it has been $5 a bajillion times now and THQ and Gamestop even gave 10,000 copies away free recently.

I want the second one but I don't $40+ want it. Hell I don't even think I $20 want it at this point. With THQ you're pretty much guaranteed the price will sink like a rock in not too much time.

Unless you have to have the collector's edition with the mask (don't think I didn't think about it, but the Dishonored whale oil lamp tempts me more) then I would wait.
Chicks dig whale oil lamps
And Coconut Queen. My girlfriend told me it was time to sleep last night and when I went into the bedroom she was playing it on her laptop and didn't stop for another 30 minutes. Dammit, Motoki....

Just found out the THQshop includes a "Season Pass" for the Darksiders II DLC. That's the stuff that makes pre-orders so enticing. Because the whole game with all the DLC will have to be below $50. Like you said, Motoki, it is likely it will get down to that relatively soon after, though.

I have enough in my backlog, I'll probably just hold off, as well. I'll just try not to feel too left out when I listen to podcasts discussing it. :p

As someone who hasn't played counterstrike in yeeeeeears. Is buying the CS complete pack worth it? Or should I just snag the CS:GO by itself at a discount?

I know its only ~$5 more for the whole pack, but will it be worth buying all the past versions of CS with the new one coming out?

For 5$ more yes. CS and CS: Source are still very active games

Just wondering if anyone wants to split cost of this one (Supreme Commander Gold) assuming you get 2 copies still?

I would say no. In my opinion after trying them all you will stick with one. I moved from 1.6 to Source and now to GO. I have not looked back even though once in a while I will play source and only because there are quite a few bugs in GO.

And I would assume that with CS:GO moving from BETA to full release, a lot of those bugs will be corrected, and that, while CS and CS:S will continue to have active communities, CS:GO will naturally be the game with the highest ceiling.

Guess the only value of the Complete pack would be listing the extra key's on steam gifts...

Tempted to get the CS pack seeing as I've never played any of them. CS GO looks like something I would enjoy but $18 is a little more than I want to spend right now, especially with my already huge backlog.
I already own CS:Source, if I buy the Counter-Strike complete pack do I get a gift copy? (probably not but I thought I'd ask)
Just googled the same question and the answer is no. Steam even says during checkout that you will not receive extra copes of the games you already own in the CS Complete pack.

Guess I will wait for a 50% off deal then.

So I just "finished" Magical Diary it's a amazing little indie game and created by a solo female indie devolper at that. It is a kind of RPG/Date/Life Sim I am sure someone here is into those and may also want one that is on steam. I put finished in quotes as I have only really done one play through and still is still many different endings and storylines to go through. So even though it only took me like 5 hours to beat. I really only got to see like one story path, so will be going back to play it again for sure.

Plus I mean if people threw a bunch of money at that, "Tropes Vs Women". Figure one of the few female solo developers,if only?, should at least get some support too  I'll definitely be getting some of her other games off of her site as well http://www.hanakogames.com/ Cute Knight I hear is like Princess Maker soo :D

Edit : Plus you get a aftermath, 'yearbook' that you can show people after you beat the game If only Coconut Queen had this =p

Hmm.. that's a good point I think I may request a refund then for Darksiders 2 from GMG. I mean 35$ isn't too bad for the game but like you said could easily become 25$- just by this winter sale.Hmm

P.S They will now will have Achievements for Minesweeper and Solitaire :whee: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/08/07/the-end-times-achievements-for-minesweeper/
