CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

You beat me to the punch! Though that does make me wonder... all the "achievements" driven gamers + productivity software = a ready slavebase for Steam's Mechanical Turk service?

Ha, I bought Flatout Ultimate Carnage a couple of years ago and I have yet to play it.

I have like 4 racing/car games and I've barely played any of them. That genre is something I'm only in the mood for once in a while, and usually when it comes up, I just go play Mario Kart on the Wii, lol

FlatOut, eh? If I remember correctly, Genocidal, the guy with the Locke (Final Fantasy VI) Avatar, suggested a whole batch of racing games that he held in high regard.

Genocidal, if you're reading this, could you jog my memory? Was FlatOut one of the games you recommended?
Valve will be launching non-gaming stuff from "creativity to productivity" software next month on Steam to go along with its vast catalog of productivity-killing software. It will allow steamworks and cloud storage integration. Interesting.
No way in hell I would [strike]buy[/strike] lease productivity software from Valve. Besides their uptime issues, the last thing I want to do is rely on their horrendous support in order to get Photoshop working, just so I can finish a project.

edit: And no serious company would deal with their shitty support. So unless Valve is going to have a totally separate, top tier customer support group available, business users will stay away.

You say that now but at 75% off and $5.99 for Valve's Spreadsheet Software with achievements and cloud saves, come back to me and say that .

Actually this could be brilliant if they put actual software on sale like they do games. Now I mean keep software and game deals separate, but you know have a midweek software deal, midweek gaming deal, etc.

As long as they dont start implementing GFWL and TAGES Activation limits.
I just tried out Darksiders 1 as well on PC and managed to get it working there is a lot of steps that were involed so not sure what the right fix was for me.

First step: If you use nviada go to the games profile and turn on threaded optimization(for dual/quad core pc's im guessing?) also turned on some AA and AF

Second Step: Right click on Darksiders.exe(what ever the real name is in the install path) and check the "Disable Scaling on high DPI" apparently this is the switch a lot say will help.

Third Step: Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/?zmmmmdjtjkd
Found in this thread on page 3(http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1441279&page=3) And move the files

dinput8.dll
xbox360cemu.ini
xinput9_1_0.dll

Into the darksiders main folder and that is what helped enable and auto detect my wireless 360 controller. After all of those steps the game now runs flawlessly without any lag for me and the controller works amazing(Couldn't imagine using the KB/M with this game honestly)So hope that helps get the game running up for you ^^

Also regarding Darksiders 2: Gaint Bomb did a quick look with the developers in this video. and they said the game was being ran on a PC, no idea how amazing the PC was, but good sign they are demo'ing the game on PC soo.

Ya It must just be a case to case basis which is a shame as I really do want to play it, Even got the 5$ strategy guide offer the developers had awhile back ago when I rented the game...So if worst comes to worst and they don't remove the awful DRM i'll end up just buying it cheap on Steam and look at is a rental. As on the PC I can turn off the motion blur to help my poor eyes :D

But ya if the motion blur doesn't bother you I support WoS on this and Motoki the game from what I played in the first 5-6 hours is really great. And their is a ton of options and a really in depth crafting system in the game as well. Plus you get to fight Monkeys and Rhino's
Thanks for that Darksiders 2 video. I haven't seen it before. 12 days to go! :bouncy:

I love Steam to death. It's an amazing service that changed the way I game and I now won't game without it.

Having said all that, their service is apalling bad to the point where I can only imagine they get away with it for lack of a serious competitor who will do deals as good as they do plus the fact that a bunch of people already have the bulk of their games there now.

Anyone who has any useful knowledge or power to do anything there is kept away in ivory tower from the masses by a buffer of utterly useless drones who regurgitate canned info of absolutely no help whatsoever.

The crafting system is awesome. I wish every RPG had it. It's SO much nicer to be able to break stuff down and use it to upgrade your existing gear than it is hauling your ass back to town to sell a bunch of junk or forge it or whatever every 5 minutes.

Those monkeys are a pain in the ass by the way. They are the Cliff Racers of Two Worlds II.

Without my spreadsheet I would not have remembered that I already own Flatout and I would have purchased it again because I keep looking at that Xbox Speed Wheel and want something cheap to try it out on. $1.87 saved that I can spend on........something else that is really cheap! :applause:

I do love my spreadsheet but I hate maintaining it.

I just have to say, while I do enjoy all the game related discussions in these threads, when you guys go off of tech rants it makes my head want to asplode......
I must've gotten lucky because Darksiders ran like butter on my system. In 30 hours of playing there were no problems.
Ditto and I have an Nvidia card. I think the worst thing I had to do is enable vsync in the nvidia CP.

I always check the store page of a game and look for the green bar to see if I own it before I buy it. The cart should warn you though if you already own s game or one game in a pack before you buy it. Also this is one of those rare times where you get a giftable copy if you already own it.

So no, I still don't need a spreadsheet. :nottalking:

As for games to try out on that wheel, you know you already own games that work with it. I would say you should try those instead of looking for others but if it's anything like telling myself I don't need to buy any more games I never seem to have much luck with that.
Disappointing to hear, I kinda jumped this game ahead of my backlog due to hype behind Darksiders 2. I glanced through what the internet had to say of this issue, and it seems like it's just a bad port. I heard suggestions of turning off vsync and playing it on lower resolution could alleviate stuttering to certain extent.

Weird, Darksiders runs just peachy on my (decidedly midrange early 2009) PC, AMD 720BE, GTX260 core 216. While enjoyable, I only have 15 hours played (accoring to steam).

I'm wondering if Darksiders just isn't very optimized. On my old Radeon HD 5770 (which handled many similar games just fine), Darksiders was pretty choppy at 1920x1200 resolution. Once I upgraded to a Radeon HD 7850, I was able to play at 2560x1440 resolution just fine without any choppiness.

I played many other 1920x1200 resolution games for the last couple years, so I was surprised to see how choppy Darksiders was at that resolution. I eventually had to change it to a lower resolution to enjoy it until I upgraded. For reference I have an old core i5-750 overclocked to 3.8 at stock voltage.

I'm assuming you have nVidia, in which case there should be a setting you can flip to fix it. Not sure what it is though.
I've tried everything I can think of, compatibility settings, Nvidia Inspector settings, limiting the frame rate doesn't make a difference, resolution doesn't matter, the only thing I haven't tried is some people said to revert to driver 296 or something like that. I don't feel like changing my driver just to make this junk run. Regarding Darksiders 2, it seems they have been showing off the game to the press on PC so maybe that's a sign that they did a better job this time. I'm not going to take that gamble tho, been burned before. Will wait and pick it up after launch.

I didn't see this post before, I'm going to try those things, thanks. I did find the tip on disabling scaling on high DPI before, but it didn't do anything for me.

Hmm, nothing is helping. I didn't try the controller fix cause I didn't have a problem with the controller. I don't know if this makes any sense but it doesn't feel like the whole game is slowing down, just that the picture on the screen is not smooth, it's like some kind of glitch or wrong setting more than performance slowdown. It happens even when I limit the fps to 30, I don't think it's a horsepower performance kind of issue. I'm gonna figure that reverting to that 296 driver might help but I'm not going to do it. I already played the game on PS3 and only paid $5 for the PC version. This is the first time I've run into a game that I couldn't eventually get working properly, usually if something's wrong I will research and google til I find the solution. This time I'm coming up with nothing that works, most of the complaints are about cutscene audio stuttering, which I don't have. Sorry for going off topic in this thread.

You could look back at the last couple of pages and see. ;)

edit: Oh, and I'd much rather use a Steam app store, assuming it's handled well, than the Mac App Store, Windows 8 store, or the paid Ubuntu Software Center. Why? Steamplay. If I can get software from Steam that works on every single computer I own and the operating systems they boot, assuming it supports them, I'd much rather do that.

But this copy came with Indiegala 3 and doesn't show up in my Steam library until I use the key. $1.87 saved I tell you! I would be completely destitute without my spreadsheet! :nottalking:

I will ask you now to refrain from being all logical and responsible like when it comes to my game buying. :speaktothehand: Such advice coming from the person who started the Coconut Queen craze! You most likely had many other games featuring cabana construction, tiki achievements and brawny gents..........OK maybe not but you see my point.

Bad things will happen to you if you don't make a spreadsheet! I read that on the Internet so it must be true.

I'm debating buying the full flatout package and selling the extra copy of FO:UC and FO1 to offset some of the cost. I'm just sadistic like that and want to see how much of a trainwreck FO3 really is.

That being said if you were going to buy only one I would get 2 or UC depending on your aversion to GFWL. I may be selling my extra copy of UC to offset some of the cost myself.

My spreadsheet would consist of one row of date and two columns.

Number of games | Amount spent
Too Damned Many! | Too damned much!

Heh, you should see my gift list since they started the inventory system. It's probably larger than most peoples games list who participate in this thread. I really should keep track of all the games I have better, but when I look at the amount I have... it just seems like a good long 72 hour job just to record the games I own, not including dates purchased or amount spent.

Speaking of Double Fine, just got this update in the mail from the Kickstarter supporter updates:

JOIN US AT PAX

We will be attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle from August 31 to September 2, and we hope you will be too! It's our first time as an official PAX exhibitor with a booth, and we'll have exclusive PAX merchandise, including new t-shirts, art prints, and more.

On Friday at 1pm, we will be screening documentary footage followed by a Q&A with Tim, Greg Rice, and 2 Player Productions' Paul Levering, hosted by Kickstarter's Cindy Au.

On Saturday at 7:30pm, Iron Brigade project lead Brad Muir and several other industry folks will show a selection of never-released prototypes and game concepts that have been consigned to development history.

On Sunday at noon, Tim will be joined by Erik Wolpaw (formerly of Double Fine, now of Valve) and other smart folks to talk about the intricacies of narrative and gameplay in game design.

Ah ha! So that's their in. I was wondering how they could assure everyone that a game that was in the early pre-production stages would be on Steam and that they would be giving out keys when everyone else has to wait and submit their game later on and hope.

It also may explain why they haven't just taken the lazy ass way out and shoved GFWL over on their games thus far.
I assume GFWL will be included with that sweet DLC.
Based on the Giant Bomb tweets about profile eating GFWL is in effect.
It's possible, what with the multiplayer aspect, but they haven't used GFWL on any of their PC games yet, so here's hoping
GFWL was confirmed a few days ago. Unlike their other games, it's published by Microsoft Studios.

Eww, well isn't that just a nice purty yummy cake with shit frosting on top.

Meh, I'll wait for a cheap sale maybe then.

I saw but, AHEM MysterD turn around, I don't want the DRM free copy of it. I will wait for it to go on Steam. It looks really interesting though and I hope it gets made.
That wasn't me who made the post, comedian.
You're a funny-guy! ;)
PC Gamer gave a review score of 93. Activate now or you'll miss out on one of the top games ever made.
Well, they (PC Gamer) did give Dragon Age 2 PC a 94% score, if I recall correctly... ;)

EDIT:
Okay, I did recall correctly.
IMHO, DA2 PC belonged somewhere in the 80's, but certainly NOT in the 90's...

I never dealt w/ Steam support, but their new updated SSA (EULA) is horrible w/ the whole "no class-actions allowed" and "lose your games if you don't agree to the agreement" ordeal.
But, let's be real - most software EULA's are horrible, anyways. Hence why EULA's are here - they're here maybe to give a few rights to us, but indeed they often most definitely take rights away.
Origin's EULA is pretty bad and even worse than Steam's SSA, actually.

re: Two Worlds II

The crafting system is awesome. I wish every RPG had it. It's SO much nicer to be able to break stuff down and use it to upgrade your existing gear than it is hauling your ass back to town to sell a bunch of junk or forge it or whatever every 5 minutes.
Absolutely! That's one of the things I found VERY addictive about Two Worlds II.

I think the real problem is - Microsoft NEVER has really fixed the main problems w/ G4WL.

The save issues disappearing or corrupting; the way the thing updates; issues w/ trying to connect; issues w/ G4WL working might cause a reinstall of G4WL; oddball DRM issues; silly activation and install limits on some G4WL games; etc etc. The list goes on and on. You'd think Microsoft would fix this crap, by now. You'd think Microsoft would want to rule both the console and PC worlds. But, nope - they'd screw-up the chance of having it all, when given the chance...which they were!

It took Steam a VERY LONG time to get their service to the point it's at right now - i.e. considered by most to be the premier PC digital download content service on the PC; which it is. It surely owns the majority of the PC market for digital downloads. Steam was god-awful, back when HL2 came out. And surely - G4WL is not even close to being as good as Steam was, back when HL2 came out.

Surprisingly, I didn't expect that code to work. Thanks for the Orcs Must Die 2 skin key.
