Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Only downside is the port itself, with the lack of options and the few random bugs but nothing too bad.
I completely agree. Aside from the lack of PC options, it is absolutely phenomenal. I haven't had this much fun with a game in a really long time. Plus, even without graphics settings, it still looks amazing. The other day I stared at the grass for a good minute just in awe, lol.
Are you sure it isn't the beta? Because that would make more sense.
Possible, but it's showing up as retail. Maybe it's a glitch though.
I know I defended them in the past but they are a bunch of jokers. Recently they had an article extolling the virtues of the schiesty grey market key vendors.
Unbelievable. You'd think one of "GamerX"'s buddies would have read that before it was posted and been like, "uhhh... dude?"

Gaming All The Time and Indie Facekick are either some of the most-ignorant-least-educated cretins I've ever seen on the internet, or they're around twelve years old. Either way, my money is going nowhere near them again.

I think this is a Steam-free bundle because no one of any real repute will do business with them at this point. Nothing against the devs working with this bundle, they are just mostly smaller and with little to lose from being associated with GaTT.

Moral issues of grey market keys aside, that was one of the more poorly written articles I've had the pleasure of reading on a supposedly professional site. They should stop buying Russian keys and save that money towards hiring a real editor.

A few of us were in the GATT Steam group chat trying to convince him that a large portion of his sales came from people wanting Steam keys and voiced displeasure in the last bundle not having many. He didn't seem to care, or take the hint with this one when the last bundle sold under 5k copies in over a month.

The last time I checked, GATT seemed to be run by people with the mentality of a 10-year-old. Collectively. Like, if they were Legion, they'd chant tasteless pee-pee jokes and make blanket forts to stay up past 9PM.

Has anyone checked the Darksiders 2 beta tab in properties? There are like 5 to opt into including ones called, internal vigil, reviewers, public beta, gold master, etc. they ask for a password but if you don't put one in and just click check password it seems to work. Not sure what any of these do but it's the first time I noticed them.

Actually, the negative feedback on that article is less deserved than it may seem. It's a small company, and the owner of it clearly does not have the resources to hire a proper writer. He wrote that article himself. I'm an article writer myself, and let me tell you that it takes time that the owner of a site/company/whatever simply does not have.

If owners of websites had the time to write the articles/blog posts that they need for SEO purposes, they wouldn't hire people like me. That's why while reading that article, you can plainly see how rushed it is.

The IM convo... You see, that was copied because he didn't have the time to properly summarize the conversation in article form. It takes time to get a nice, professional summary of a conversation written up. Time he didn't have. Bad move on his part, but he's trying to keep the ball rolling with the articles to bring more traffic to the site. It's a bloody juggling act, let me tell you. He needs more employees, but for that, he needs more money, and for that, he needs more traffic, and for that, he needs more articles. It's a vicious circle, and you can see the shoddy workmanship that results.

Ironically, he still made the right choice. It's better to put out weak articles often if your alternative is rarely putting out quality ones. That sounds absurd, but search engine optimization is key. That's how the internet works.

In the end though, besides the Skype convo, the article is simple but fine. It doesn't take a cement side on the issue, and comes at it from a neutral perspective of looking at both sides of the picture. Not a great article at all, but not worth a circle jerk of "omg that company is shit".

Heartwarming to see all the CAGs jumping a bandwagon with each other though. ;)

(I wonder how many people actually read it.)
It seems to me like he was promoting intkeys in that article, so I wouldn't doubt that he was paid to do it, or profits somehow.
Well, maybe, maybe not. When you need to keep up on articles, any opportunity to write about SOMETHING is a godsend. It's very difficult to keep that up consistently. That said, there's probably a 50/50 chance that Intkeys prompted him to write the article. The other chance is that he simply needs more subjects to write on, happens to know a few guys in the biz (good or bad), and decided to use that resource to make up the bulk of an article.

From another perspective, that's pure transparency in copying and pasting a convo, eh? Typos, shoddy grammar and all.

I completely disagree. That article is sub par for a high school student (that's without even touching upon the total shill nature of the article).

As for the second point, once you write (or present) something so obviously bad / unabashedly promotional (while pretending otherwise) you will have a hard time shaking that reputation.
It seems to me like he was promoting intkeys in that article, so I wouldn't doubt that he was paid to do it, or profits somehow.
100%

I've been in that game and had to push out articles. If you push out crap and encourage grey market sites/ideas, no serious advertiser/reader/developer will ever take you serious again. They deserve every bit of bad reception for the article. There is no excuse for bad writing no matter how rushed or understaffed they may be.

If this was a developer who put out a crappy game we would be reaming them. Why should we feel any different about a site that encourages regional exploitation and poor content?

You don't quite understand the point. I do agree with you, but search engine optimization does not. How many people will read that article in its entirety? A fair number, but not a whole lot. Now how many people will read that article and say to themselves "Oh my, I'm never doing business with THAT site!"? Not a whole lot. Now even FURTHER, how many people who somehow find their way to the Indie Face Kick Bundle site, realize that it's run by GATT, and still remember "Oh yeah, I boycotted them!"? Even less.

That's the point. The sad truth is that consistent swill will satisfy Google before occasional brilliance will. Couple that with the evil monster that keeping up a blog is, and lack of time, and money, and fighting the "DRM war" that Steam has caused, and you suddenly have a recipe for disaster. Mister "GamerX" has a disaster, and who knows how long he'll last. All the cool kids like Steam, and unless you're GOG (who is generally the only "cool" DRM free only retailer), you're losing more and more profits to Steam.

It's not as simple as "That's a shitty article", because it is a fairly shitty article.

I'm not going argue the regional key war, nor about the quality of the article (because it is low). That said, have you owned a dying company on the losing side of the DRM war? Probably not.

In any case, the article in a nutshell was "This company seems legit, and has real links to real game publishers, and this one doesn't. You make your own decision on the subject." That's not exactly "pushing grey ideas", and in today's society, the economy creates those grey ideas in the first place. Not everybody has the same standards; it's not black and white. And obviously people are still taking them seriously; their latest bundle looks better than HIB's current one. I'd rather have the weak Uncharted clone than... Spirits on my Android for $6?

Re: SEO. You might be right. I do not know. I've never worked in that area.

In the professional and academic community in which work, people get remembered and marginalized for particularly low quality work, papers, presentations. Trust in people you work with is particularly important because of the way falsified data or incorrect QA can really ruin or tarnish one's career.

Absolutely, I'm a stickler myself when it comes to anything I work on. If a single sentence sounds "off", I'll sit there for a half an hour just making it sound perfect (extremist example, but I'm sure it's happened).

The problem is that the internet is--by nature--driven by the complex of instant gratification. It doesn't matter if it's porn or something dead serious, 99% of its users generally follow that mindset, and even for those that don't (say, yourself, or someone here, or me), they still do... sometimes. Search engines only can take quality into account so much.

For example, when I ran a blog/portfolio of sorts and updated it at a steady pace (one post a day, everyday, for quite a long time), what were my top two articles? One on the "Snowflake Method" (a novel writing method), and one on "The System Check Virus". Were those my pride and joy articles? The best I'd ever written? No, probably not, and they could have been much crappier than they were, and they probably would have brought the same amount of traffic to my blog. They brought the traffic in simply because of the subject and careful tagging.

It is true that you DO grab loyal readers and customers via quality work, but when it comes to blogs and such, you really do have to be regular. Being regular (lol) is generally more important than quality, as long as your stuff isn't absolutely awful all of the time. A shitty article on a grey subject now and then isn't great, but it keeps the ball rolling.

On second thought, GATT needs a writer. Chaching! ;)

Thanks for that. It was interesting to read about your experience.

The SEO stuff is interesting but, as the end consumer, it matters very little to me just as excuses for why my hamburger sucks (short staff, can't afford a decent cook) don't make it a better burger, it just makes it a poor burger with a side of excuses. It reads like a hastily constructed forum post or something.

On the plus side, I can safely say that I did read it. The content didn't put me off so much as the lousy construction. I'd actually be interested in a well researched and constructed article about grey market keys even if that's not my personal scene (heck, I'd be interested because it's not my scene so it'd be new to me) but this sure wasn't that article.

I know the GOT game has received low review scores, but as a fan of the series, I'm still somewhat interested in trying it out.

That seems like a good price - I don't think I've seen it lower than that anywhere yet.

It has very little to do with the books or the show, plays and looks like a bad 90s game, is boring and tedious and has unnecessary Tages 5 limit activation DRM even though the game is Steamworks no matter where you buy it from.

Avoid like the plague.

This is and Stronghold 3 are my two most regretted purchases out of hundreds and hundreds of games. Honestly, I don't know what the hell George R. R. Martin was thinking licensing the name of his work out to dreck like this.

Wow. That sounds like a pass.

Thanks Motoki. :)

I have a question. With all of steams security. How does one get access to a key that would work on your system? Is it someone from the inside?

I'm confused on what you are asking. Can you clarify? Are you talking about a game key? You just buy them normally.

This dialog has gained my approval.
That was an amazing article. It is surely worthy of publication.

You forgot to say "nice" throughout your interview.

Fox has my seal of approval.:applause:
It's heartwarming to see all you cool kids jump on the same bandwagon but how do you know it was worthy of publication? How do you know you were entertained? I am a 21 year old self appointed opinionated whether people like it or not expert on everything and I know the way the world works. You CAGs clearly do not.

Maybe Fox and TrollingAllTheTime have limited resources and thus are not truly able to entertain.

Ultimately it doesn't matter anyway because Google will run the Fluxcapictorcraptaculorarticleaudiencegenerating algothorim and generate a lot of traffic there and people will skim Fox's article and buy craptacular bundle #37 and nothing anyone says here matters.

There has been a deep discussion on game activation keys. I thought for them most part companies would 3rd party sell them to boost sales or appeal to a cheap market. Then there was talk of russians or something.

I was asking With security so tight on key authentication. How do seedy places get keys that work.

The issue with, let's call them, seedy keys has to do with regional pricing.

In Russia, software piracy is rampant. This is countered by lower prices across the board to make people more willing to purchase software rather than to steal it. In the end, companies get higher profits because the increased sales at low prices outweigh the higher profit margin on far fewer sales.

This ends up affecting the global market if people buy those games from legitimate Russian sources (they are real keys for the Russian release of the game) and sell them to the world market. If they duck the US retail price by even a few dollars, they stand to pocket high gains that rightfully belong to the publisher of those regions.

It's against the Steam ToS to do this, and the penalty for activating keys from other regions is often to have the game removed from your list. (Russian Steam keys often have "RU" at the end of the title when you activate the key.)

Key resellers won't be upfront about the origin of their keys for obvious reasons. Buyer beware. To address the original question, a key that you buy from one of the listed sites a few pages back is a US release. I don't know if Steam itself maintains a directory of legitimate Steam retailers, but one could look to them for it, too. If it's a place you've never heard of before promoting "Steam keys" rather than selling a game with the notation that it must be activated on Steam, chances are you're looking at a reseller. If in doubt, ask around.
You don't quite understand the point. I do agree with you, but search engine optimization does not. How many people will read that article in its entirety?
I didn't read the article because I don't really care. You seem to be advocating pushing out crap or marginal crap for search engine optimization and I just can't get on board with that at all. So more people read your crap... how many are coming back? That's what you want.

Now, I'm speaking about this purely from the standpoint of a person who has been doing this for the last 13 years. I'm assuming the end goal is developing a site that people will value and return to on their own without "tricking them" via search, and not simply trying to generate page hits and pennies via Google Ads.

Adding to that, some sites will say you can activate the Russian keys using a VPN to fake your location. This is explicitly forbidden by the Steam terms of service.

Another thing that happens is key lists get hacked and the keys distributed among shady outfits. These keys often get revoked as they're discovered leaving you poorer and gameless.

Edit: I was adding to DPsycho, obviously.
Motoki's response either did or did not entertain me. I have a hunch that it did, for what that's worth.
I couldn't understand it. It was too well written.

Exactly.

GATT wants people to bookmark the site, sign up for their newsletter, and buy their bundle, and probably not in that order. A horribly written article about key sites might get people from search results, but his bounce rate is going to be almost 100%, and none of those people are coming back.

Deal of the Day is Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom for 75% off, making it $1.24.

I am assuming you are asking where they get their keys from. Large multinational publicly traded companies take an oath in front of God and NASDAQ/NYSE/TSE/LSE to place shareholder profits above all else. In order to fulfill this blood oath they borrow the tactics of Colonial Imperialism of Divide and Conquer. They arbitrarily divide the world into several regions, not based on geography, language, or culture, but on Capitalist estimates of available spending power. To each of these regions they impose different prices for the same product. To prevent the flow of products from lower priced regions to higher priced regions they institute legal measures such as warranty denial, restrictive DRM, lawsuits, and rendition programs.

Steam acts like one of these companies.
How will I know if I was entertained? SOMEONE TELL ME!
Metacritic: 61 User Reviews: 8.4 I don't know what to believe either.

Imo, the biggest practical problem with Steam is angering some piece of code that locks you out of -all- your steam games. A good practical reason to stay on the reasonably up-and-up.

Daily deal is The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, 75% off for $1.24

Many of us got it years ago for 49 cents, iirc. Never been in a bundle.

Yeah, this looks like a pretty good game for the price. I was eyeing it on Xbox arcade, but it's 10 bucks. Definitely worth a try for 1.24 (good metacritic score also).
