The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.
I was a fool to not pick it up when it first came out. I would have loved it, but it didn't get the media hype necessary to get my attention (wouldn't have taken much, but it was pretty ignored). By the time Disciples II came out, my computer (I think a Pentium 233 at the time?) just couldn't handle it. I played the demo and loved it, but I had to listen to the game shredding my HDD. :) Or maybe my HDD was failing at that point and that caused the game to run poorly.

Either way, it's not until now that I've gotten into the Disciples games, and so far, I think they're the best of the whole genre--better than HoMM, even better than Age of Wonders.

Unfortunately, reports from Russia are that Disciples III is a buggy mess. :( Hopefully once the bugs are fixed, we'll get something at least as great as D2. If not, it's a damn shame.

I'm going to go buy D1. Shoulda gotten it when it was on sale!

Edit: $10 on GoG... I'm going to wait a little while... til it's either on sale again or I simply cannot live without it. Got so much to play already and spent so much recently! I won't play D2 until after I can get and play D1 tho.
You can find that game for $4.99 at Staples and Target. I see it all the time in the bargain bins.

I'm quite the opposite when it comes to purchases in general but more so with games. If there are commercials for it and it's not a gameplay only video...I tend to think it's not worth the $ let alone the hype.

I got by word of mouth and gameplay videos/review only.
Outrun 2006 is no longer on Steam. WTF? I looked it up to see what the price went to after the holiday sale, and it isn't there anymore. I guess I can still install it anytime I want since I bought it already, but WTF? Nobody can buy it again? Has this ever happened before on Steam?
Hmmmm that is odd. As long as we can keep downloading it im ok with it though! Stuff like that is always a fear of mine, it always worries me when stuff like that happens because that means that from now on Valve is maintaining something they are no longer making money off of. How long will they be willing to do that for? And when they stop it seems wrong that we that bought it are just SOL.

What really pisses me off about it is that the government keeps passing more and more laws making it more expensive and difficult to be a pirate or even not a pirate but someone that is doing anything outside the wishes of these giant corporations.......and absolutely nothing to protect the rights of the consumer as we move into a new age of technology with all these new ways of distributing products!

Ah, the 2009 Steam sale...good memories. Posted this in the original sale thread by the time everyone had stopped reading so here it is again:

Here's my final tally:

Defense Grid - $2.50
Jade Empire - $3.75
Trine - $5
Ghostbusters - $6.79
LucasArts Adventure Pack - $2.50
Broken Sword Twin Pack - $5
Left 4 Dead 2 - $26
Tomb Raider Legend - $13.39

Total: $65

Definately would have bought Civ4 complete and the Witcher like so many of you did if I hadn't already bought them during a midweek madness on Steam earlier this winter.
Considered a lot of the cheaper games many were getting but decided to rather concentrate my time and money on the two more expensive titles I really wanted; Tomb Raider Legend and L4D2.

All in all very happy with my purchases! I must confess I was glued to this thread and the Steam page throughout my christmas vacation. In a way I'm glad it's over so I can think about something else :)

And finally, big thanks to Arben, Vendetta and N64Fanboy for making the L4D2 4-pack come together!
I got by word of mouth and gameplay videos/review only.
I've pretty much always just gone by reviews, so all I can imagine is that the Disciples reviews failed to catch my attention. A shame! I would have loved it back then.

____

So, about guest passes. I have some, or I did at least. I was about to post asking if anyone wanted them, but I no longer have a "gift" column under "my games". What gives?
__________

And finally, re: Steam News--

Looks like Divinity II is $5 off. Heh. Not a great deal, though reviews are favorable (no US reviews yet, at least not from major outlets). I assume it's the sequel to Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity.

I'll be keeping my eye on it, at least. Probably $20 or less for Steam Holiday 2010. :)

Demo: http://demos.dtp-entertainment.ag/Divinity2_DEMO_EN.exe

Kind of excited to try it out. If it were $29.99 I might bite, but $49.99 is a lot, and $5 is a cruddy discount, even if it is new.

It just happans sometimes. Go to the games tab(not my games but games near file)then go to manage gifts and they should be there. I too have gift passes for madballs and killing floors if anyone wants them.
Steam started the pre-order for Star Trek online. Anybody here going to play that?
Looks neat, but I'm not sure how many MMOs I can handle at once (maybe one or zero!).

I'll be eager to read a few reviews.

Thanks dude, that did it. :)

My gift passes are the three for Shattered Horizon and one four Counterstrike: Source. If anyone wants them, just let me know!

I'm in the Steam CAG group now. :D yay!

I don't know if I can handle another MMO but I'm definitely interested in hearing reviews and impressions!

Which MMO's are you playing?

So, Steam has this awesome sale, tons of stuff for cheap, I'm set for games for months, good to go.

Last night my left wrist goes to hell while plaing Mass Effect, severe pain when I try to use a keyboard. Probably carpal tunnel problems, which I've had in the past.

They'll probably clear up in a few days to a week of wearing a wrist brace like usual, but man, crappy timing. Least I can play Civ4 with just the mouse and the 10key.
Steam started the pre-order for Star Trek online. Anybody here going to play that?
Oh hell YES. It basically looks like Starfleet Command: The MMO. Since I loved SFC, I am super hyped for this.

I'm waiting for FFXIV or Star Wars The Old Republic. I may go back to WoW for a bit since the last patch made gearing toons easy mode, and I love to alt it up so that's right up my alley.

Hehe I had that while playing D2 one time. I just started playing awkwardly with my left hand and if things got too heated id just play through the pain. Bad idea but yeah...its Diablo!

HA, nobody answered that poor guy.
How do I get in the CAG Steam Group?? Says by invite only?
There's a CAG thread around here somewhere with instructions.

Okay, I said that. Stop stealing, stealer.
Last night my left wrist goes to hell while plaing Mass Effect...
Sorry to hear that, man. :( We'll have to play lots of Civ IV.
Anyone got a Counter Strike Source pass? I wanna try!
I do! How do I get it go you?

So starting tomorrow I will try to remember to gather up any steam news/releases I can find first thing in the mourning and post it all in the first post on page 1. To try and keep discussion lively in the topic I will try to post a daily question for everyone(similar to Jesses survey which people seemed to enjoy). Should hopefully help keep things somewhat fresh and active.

If anyone catches articles related to steam or notices things like deals, price drops etc then shoot me a PM and ill post the story in the first post and give you credit. Feel free to shoot suggestions too.

Sounds good to me, man! Thanks for putting in the effort!

Is tomorrow the mid-week sale? It's kind of stupidly exciting, even though I rather hope it's nothing I want!

No clue! Steam has been weird with sales recently, seems like some weeks the midweek sale is big, some its small, some it doesnt come at all! Regardless I will check the site a few times a day and if I see the sale ill post it on the front page of the topic along with any other news.

I highly doubt it will come about, but I did also send in a suggestion to Game Informer to do an article on steam. The magazine isnt the crap fest it used to be, they have updated it to have a monthly interview segment and articles like time lines for developers/games/series that are really interesting. I doubt they will take the suggestion, but it would be cool if they did. Id love to see someone do a real in depth with someone in charge at steam to get some info on things like sales numbers and what kind of profit they are making. If not an interview a time line piece on them would be cool too.

That would be really interesting... I'm interested in Impulse, too (which I also have, but I kind of prefer Steam... and sorta wish I had Civ IV and Tropico Reloaded on Steam instead.. oops!).

Does Outrun 2K6 play horribly for anyone else? I tried it on a keyboard and the controls were ubersensitive even with the sensitivity is toned all the way down. I lightly press the keys and I'm scraping wall both ways.

I use a Controller S converted to a PC gamepad. It plays fine with that.

Do you have VSync enabled?

I really want to try the game before I invest money in it, wonder if I pre-order from Amazon, once they sned out the beta codes if I dislike the Beta I could dump my pre-order on the game?

I wondered about that too. Did you apply for the closed Beta?

If you want to try out Star Trek Online, check out your local Target stores. They have 99 cent pre-order packs that grant you beta access (and a five dollar coupon for the game). Probably the way of least-commitment to try it out (until they release a demo or something).
Hey guys, is Spore any good?
Spore is good, but you'll get really sick of the game fast. Worth $5 but more than that? Ehhhhhhhh I dunno.

Spore was "Awww man this is awesome" and went to "Holy crap this is boring" in a matter of a day. It starts out really fun, but then speeds through each phase. Made me wonder "Did I just finish that phase in 5 minutes? Seriously?".

Not a bad game, not that good either. Just not worth much.

I'm going to be getting Star Trek Online, I just don't know yet which pre-order bonus I want to get.

Now for the sale summary.

1) What one Steam purchase you made during this sale are you the most pleased with? Why?
I think I am most happy about KOTOR, as I've been meaning to play that for a long time. But, I don't know whether that'll be my pick after I go through all of my purchases.

2) What one Steam purchase from this sale are you least pleased with? Why?
I am least pleased with the LucasArts Adventure Bundle. The shim Steam uses to get them to run on modern Windows doesn't provide good MIDI emulation, but for some reason they did something to the game files so they don't run in ScummVM. So, basically, I'll have to go pirate the games to get them to run the way I want them to.

3) Are there any daily deals you regret not purchasing?
I regret not getting Day of Defeat Source and gifting it to a friend whom I've been wanting to play with my friends and I. I also regret missing Machinarium, but I did so because I missed the better sale on it from the week earlier.

4) How much did you spend on this sale? (Estimates are fine.)
$50.66

5) What will you do differently next year?
Probably buy fewer games because I bought most of the classic games I wanted this year.

6) What game would you most like to see on Steam?
Maybe the Quest for Glory series, Al Lowe's Leisure Suit Larry games, or the yet unreleased LucasArts adventures (e.g. Grim Fandango). Oh, and the Dark Engine games, like Thief and System Shock 2

7) What would you pay for it?
Under $10 each.

8) Does this guy work for Steam, or what?
He wouldn't be asking if he were.

9) Where's his hair?
In the ashes of his youth.

OK guys I'm having an issue. I have been trying to find some multiplayer games in Killing Floor and Team Fortress 2 tonight and on both games I get stuck at "Refreshing/querying servers". I have yet to see any games. What can I do?

edit:
I'm sort of figuring that my router is the issue. What do I need to do with my router to let me find games?

Last edited by a moderator:
I have now bypassed my router. I have shut down all firewall and antivirus. And I still can't find any games.

edit: I just realized you have to choose a server in the Steam client and not while in-game. What a nub

you can find games while in-game, I don't know whats up with your system

Ok guys I updated the front page. Ill try and keep doing so every day with any news steam puts up, price drops, sales etc etc. If I find any more articles ill post them too and if people actually think question of the day is a good idea/use QotD then ill keep doing it too.

An Adults Only(AO)rating is considered the kiss of death in the industry because currently no retailers(gamestop, walmart, best buy etc)will carry an AO rated game. If a developer wished to release an AO rated game be it a porn game or be it just that it has over the top violence/sexual content do you think that Valve should buck the Trend and carry the game on steam?

Yes

Valve has been known to buck trends, but I wouldn't say they ever tend to put themselves in button-pushing situations. I doubt they would as I'm sure they'd get tons of flack from middleaged women who've never played video games.

OT but is Heavy Rain getting an AO rating? Seems pretty graphic. If not, what do you need to do to get one? Seems to be pretty damn hard.

Well the easiest way is anything with visible penetration. It used to be you didnt even need it though, just hinting at it or suggesting it like the Leisure Suit Larry series was enough. Again extreame violence is another way, both manhunt games were threatened with AO ratings and had to tone the games down.

Right now, the Sherlock Holmes Collection (The Silver Earring, Nemesis, Mystery of the Persian Carpet, Mystery of the Mummy, Awakened - Remastered, Versus Jack the Ripper) is on sale through Jan 13 for $43.99 (20% off). I'll pass but for a bit over $7 a game you could do worse. I've enjoyed the ones I've played.

Well guess you get to nab the first sale info in the steam topic. I went ahead and updated it on the main page, from now on I am not going to inform people if I update stuff since it will just cretae a bunch of needless posts. Ill simply update every mourning when I wake up and throughout the day as I find/people submit stuff.
If I find something and see you didn't post it, I'll just PM the info to you.
Works for me. I am sure there will be tons of things I don't catch since while ill check steam a few times a day im not going to go obsessively looking through the site to find deals or new articles and what not. PMing is best, but people are still welcome to post here if they prefer...just thought I would make it clear I wasn't going to respond to each and every post that people make with new info since it will just create a headache for me and useless posts in the topic.

Thanks again for making the first submission ;) Will make it much easier having others contribute stuff so its greatly appreciated.

Spaceforce Rogue Universe dropped to $10!
MSI, you did a great job with the update. I'm not sure how long you can keep this up, but I'll certainly be reading as long as you do. Extremely concise and useful. I wouldn't have noticed much of this info myself. You're better than the Steam news!

Oh, and any thoughts on Spaceforce Rogue Universe? I'll see if there's a demo. $10 is my magic price.

Demo found: http://www.filefront.com/7640701/Space-Force-Rogue-Universe-Demo/

Reviews certainly would make me think twice, but I guess I'll see after the demo.

Haven't tried the Divinity II demo yet, but it looks promising.
Spore is good, but you'll get really sick of the game fast. Worth $5 but more than that? Ehhhhhhhh I dunno.
If it had released at $20 and without hype and Securom...

As it stood, I bought it on day one, and like others have said, I played it for that day. That's it. Installed it on my new PC, if that counts, but I haven't played it. I thought the new adventures expansion looked cool, but reviews say it's not that great.

The space portion is fun, but, again, not great. Just makes me want a REAL Star Control game instead.

And the other portions of the game are so insipid that you'll want to fly through them as quickly as you can to get them done with. Or maybe it's impossible not to fly through them.

It's actually a better game than I make it sound. $20 for the game and all its expansions would be all right. :) Maybe...

I'd love to play a quality AO game. Who knows why. Not particularly into violent games, but anything that pushes the envelope in other areas would interest me.

I feel like Valve would be the type to put an AO game up without announcement, fuss or hoopla and downplay it. And if it was a low-profile game, the media would just ignore it. If it was something high-profile, I don't think Valve would touch it with a 20-foot pole.

Ill keep doing it as long as the topic stays fairly active and people are interested. I don't work or go to school(live off of disability for panic attacks I have)so iv got the time to pop on in the mourning and get this together/check throughout the day. If people arnt posting or if a feature isnt being used well ill stop! ;) Just glad it seems a few of you really like the idea.

On the AO subject I agree. It does seem like something Valve would do and be smart enough to not create a big deal over but instead just slip in with normal releases. I really dont see what the problem is though, AO games should be a part of any system! Steam especially should be allowed to put out AO games without it killing their business. I mean hell you have to have a credit card or set your bank account to the program to pay for anything! Thats proof of either being old enough to play AO games or that the parent isnt paying enough attention to their child to care what their doing anyways!
