The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.
Is ME2 worth it for someone who didn't finish the first one because they thought it was boring? I got close to the end but the game just started to bore me. I've heard the second one is a lot more action oriented, so it has me interested.
I would say yes. ME2's combat is way more fun, the missions are more diverse and should keep you wanting to play more, but if you were turned off with the story elements and conversations, then it's not going to really change your mind.

The story elements and conversations were my favorite parts. :D

Yeah, I really don't like the idea of a "deluxe" version just being some extra doodads. Guns and armor that should already be in the game (but are probably wildly unnecessary anyway)...

I totally understand the need to compete with used games, but I don't like getting jerked off because of it (especially not on the PC side).

Just wanted to say, if anyone was thinking of the digital deluxe edition for the same reasons I was thinking of getting them (the bonus 2 guns and the armor, and maybe the soundtrack) there's 2 threads on steam where people say it isn't really worth it
Is it worth $12 just for DDE weapons and armor?
and the soundtrack apparently is only 1/2 the songs in the game anyways, according to this steam thread:
Digital Deluxe Edition DOES NOT include full soundtrack
I don't know if anyone was on the fence like I was, but just thought I'd point these out, in case you were wondering if the deluxe is worth the $12 dollars :)

I was on the fence, then decided against, then came here to harp about it. So your info is helpful to me in that it reinforces my decision. :)

(Of course if someone really wants this extra stuff and pays for the DDE, I don't want them to think I'm being judgy. I bought the Super Deluxe Version of Elemental and all. I fully realize I'm a raving weird fanboy there. So I don't want to come of judgmental. I'm a cynical cheapass most of the time. :)

Thanks for the support links RE: the ME2 DDE. On the Steam detail pages, BOTH versions list a code for Cerberus as a feature, so it sounds like you get that-- the best bonus-- either way? Can anyone confirm?

decided against duels of the plainswalkers after playing the demo. Should play osme more magic though its been a bit.

Edit: all new versions of the game are suppose to come with the cerberus network card.

bunch on nonsense in short would recommend the mass effect games.

Only recently did I finally get around to playing through me2 and it was great, would have preferred to have the steam version perhaps but oh well , got it for about the same price a while ago. 37.50ish + $5 pinnacle station dlc for me1 - $20 off $40+ paxeast code from the ea store way back when, + shipping from goomba. Pretty good deal especially since was considering but decided against buying it at full price when it came out, enjoyed my $5 copy of ME1 from the holiday sale that much.

Can't say I think the deluxe edition is worth it.

Not much of a shooter player , most of my experience being random multiplayer games,
it's not just a shooter but anyways loved the story. One of these days may give playing through bioshock or halflife we shall see.

less random stuff to do more shooting in combat perhaps one way to put it, badly though, if you do buy ME2 should finish 1 for the story even if you just set it easy.
my opinion anyways. Story wise I suppose ME2 moves along a little faster.
Actually, I was just about to report on this (can't believe we're the first!); I was going to say something like, "Fantastic deal on Mass Effect, good deal on Mass Effect 2; "Digital Deluxe" version remains a horrendous rip-off."

I guess I just don't get the value of a "digital" art book and whatnot. That kind of crap should be free with the game already. Maybe if they were gonna send it to you in physical form, yeah, but they ain't.

Just my cheap ass opinion. :) I bought the regular ME2, tho, and already got the first for like $7 at one point or another. I think this is the cheapest it's ever been and probably this is the cheapest ME2 will be til Christmas.

Whee! Coffee and deals. I still want Blood Bowl, though, darn it.
I don't think you're the only one. A digital artbook should be free. I grabbed the digital artbook of Bioshock on Bioshock's official site. That's where that "deluxe" piece of the game should be.

As for ME2 in general for anybody wondering if it's a good game, get it! A truly epic story with consequences towards your actions (which you saw extensively if you played through the first/kept your save), makes it a single player game that motivates you for multiple playthroughs.

I just installed my pre-purchase of Magic the Gathering. I played a few games in Campaign and decided to try out online. Wow the entire game I didn't know I was broadcasting to everyone until someone said hey whoever is talking you have a lot of feedback. Apparently there is a setting in Steam and it was set under play voice when you hear it. Crap:whistle2:#

Yeah, Magic on Steam has voice chat on by default and you can't turn it off or mute anyone in-game (and no text chat either). It's annoying, but we're hoping they'll fix it.

Only game I bought so far during the EA week is Burnout. I kinda wanted to get crysis, dead space, c&c 3 and nfs: shift but my wallet and I didnt quite agree with each other...
I hoped they would have a few euros more off but it was the exact same price as when they had the xmas or a weekend deal with them, so yeah nothing :/
I might get Dragon age tomorrow if its at least 40-50% off.

And if I can find an american by tomorrow that want bioshock + money for dragon age that would make my day ;D
Thanks for the support links RE: the ME2 DDE. On the Steam detail pages, BOTH versions list a code for Cerberus as a feature, so it sounds like you get that-- the best bonus-- either way? Can anyone confirm?
I found this article via google search, and it sounds about right--EA's push (as well as others) to include "bonus content" for original purchasers, and require used-game purchasers to buy said content:

How Mass Effect 2's "Cerberus Network" Works

Cerberus Network

  • Includes a code granting access to additional bonus content via the in-game Cerberus Network.
I haven't installed it yet, but if its anything like how Dragon Age's bonus content works with stone keeper and...blood armor? basically you have to register a profile on bioware's website, and then you associate your cd key with this profile...which then allows you to download the bonus content. Its more for people who buy the physical CD/DVD games and then sell them....if you were to sell the game to gamestop, then the next guy would buy this, and have to purchase the bonus content at full price....I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure you can just use a throwaway email account and include it when selling back to gamestop or whatever, but then, I suppose what person who sells to gamestop would bother to make sure the bioware profile is included in the sale to gamestop (or other used game stores)? Anycase, hopefully I didn't bore anyone/repeat common knowledge with my explanation. Long story short--without verifying first hand, I'm 99% sure both DDE & regular ME2's receive Cerberus Network.

Unless they send you a physical CD and artbook, then I completely agree--doesn't really justify the extra cost imo...I remember being pretty impressed with WoW:Burning Crusade's artbook (good sized, and hardcover too) and soundtrack CD (all the new music, plus bonus song), but doubt I'd have the same excitement for a pdf and some mp3's...
why did they wait till after the sale to put up the mass effect 2 demo?
Because sales generate buzz, now that Mass Effect 2 has been the word for a while people will demo it and possibly buy it at its full price.

FYI, the retail version of the Fallout 3 GOTY DLC disc is compatible with the Steam install of the regular version of FO3. Just for anyone who didn't pick it up previously and doesn't want to pay $50 for the DLC on GFWL.

I got Burnout Paradise on sale last week. Hopefully it was worth it. Just about any game under $10 can't be that bad if I get a week of entertainment out of it.

Deus Ex 1 and 2 are on sale for $2.49 apiece right now until mid day tomorrow or so. I picked up the original, since I've never played it. :)

Thanks for the heads up! I missed these the last time that they were on sale, so I'm nabbing them now. In case anyone is wondering, it's a one-day sale to mark the 10th year anniversary of Deus Ex.

In other Steam news, I had to validate my email as part of the purchase. In another moment of Steam awesomeness, after I clicked the link in the email to validate my address, the validation message in Steam (which is running on a different computer than the one I check my email on) changed to a 'Success' message. This is what we in the user experience biz call "really, really freaking awesome".

Luckily the game is typically on sale for $5 for the pair, and I'm sure it'll come around again, which is how I got mine a few months ago. I was surprised to see the verification for my email, but glad it didn't cause any problems.

Counter Strike Source is now available on OSX and on sale, the major update is also here. Hopefully it wont crash when I start it up. I already heard that most Gun Game servers have to be fixed after the update. :whistle2:?

Updates to Counter-Strike: Source have been released and the game is now available on the Mac. To celebrate this update, Counter-Strike: Source will be on sale for 66% off until Friday. For more information, click here.

The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

General

  • 144 achievements added
  • New lifetime player stats and summary screens
  • New match player stats and summary screens
  • New end of round display with MVP and interesting fact about a player
  • Updated scoreboard with new icons, visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures
  • New cinematic death camera
  • New domination and revenge system
  • Added avatar icons to voice chat, scoreboard, and end of round display
  • Incorporated many source engine updates
  • Disallowed the use of arbitrary command strings for the message of the day screen. Now only a specific list of commands is allowed.
  • Addressed issue in which AWPs and Scouts sometimes did not make the zooming sound.
  • cvar mat_showlowresimage is now a cheat command.
  • Many development console commands which would crash the server removed.
  • Updated source engine addresses many issues:
  • Better flashlight effect
  • Better HDR behavior
  • Multicore rendering support
  • Added sv_disablefreezecam cvar to turn off the freezecam on a server.
  • Added sv_nonemesis cvar to turn off domination/revenge on a server.
  • Added sv_nomvp cvar to turn off MVP stars on a server.
  • Added sv_nostats cvar to turn off stats on a server.
  • Removed -tickrate command line option and defaulted tick rate to 66 rather than 33. This addressed a number of issues, including:
    • Tick rate affecting how fast doors open / close
    • Tick rate causing players hitting the ground to stutter
    • Tick rate affecting the firing mechanisms of certain guns

UI

  • Added the following cvars to allow players to customize their scoreboards.
  • cl_scoreboard_ct_color_red
  • cl_scoreboard_ct_color_green
  • cl_scoreboard_ct_color_blue
  • cl_scoreboard_t_color_red
  • cl_scoreboard_t_color_green
  • cl_scoreboard_t_color_blue
  • cl_scoreboard_dead_color_red
  • cl_scoreboard_dead_color_green
  • cl_scoreboard_dead_color_blue
  • Changed the screen that appears when the message of the day fails to load to display proper error text.
  • Made the CT silhouette for the auto-select option in the Choose a Class screen smaller and corrected its aspect ratio.
  • Addressed a problem that occasionally caused characters to be colored incorrectly on the Change a Class screen.

Gameplay

  • Made ladders easier to climb. Added cvars sv_ladder_dampen and sv_ladder_angle.
  • Fixed issue that awarded three points when the bomb explodes after the round ends by elimination criteria instead.
  • Fixed issue in which you weren’t given credit for grenade damage if you fired a weapon at someone then hit them with a grenade (in that order). Also fixed problem in which grenading a player and then killing them with another weapon showed as ‘*** in 1’ on console.
  • There’s now a priority order for displaying win conditions when multiple win conditions are set.
  • If timelimit exists and is not 0, then show timelimit.
  • If timelimit does not exist, show maxrounds if not 0.
  • If both timelimit and maxrounds are 0, show winlimit.
  • If timelimit, maxrounds, and winlimit are all 0, show nothing.
  • Added a cvar to ignore win conditions: mp_ignore_round_win_conditions.

Bought CS:S having never played it (recently got into pc gaming) im afraid of the thorough ass whippings im going to receive.

feel free to send me invites, for CS:S or any game.

I'd play more CSS if the community for it didn't totally suck. I don't feel like hearing from 16 year old "pros" who think they're Gods gift to FPS gaming because they have some shitty team ranked in the top five of some terrible TWL ladder.

Like 99% of the people who I've talked to that play CSS are scrubs that try to act like they're "leet sauce", "pwn stars" or whatever other gay title they award themselves after they kill someone.

That, and there's hardly any servers worth playing in. I don't feel like playing on some crappy surf server, playing Dust 2/Office 24/7, or playing with some garbage WC3/Pokemon mod.

haha a pokemon mod? jesus.
well my experience was a few rounds and i encountered no douchbaggery.
at its worst i cant imagine it being significantly worse than nearly any shooter on xbl

I tend to play Gun Game servers most of the time in CSS. The ones I play on however have to be fixed after this update. :whistle2:?

If this has already been posted, please excuse my laziness.

Pre-ordering Monkey Island 2 Special Edition nets you a free copy of the first Monkey Island Special Edition. Kind of a poopy deal because I already had the first, but I was able to gift it to a friend who will hopefully find it a nice surprise (and won't hate it!).

I just downloaded this and before remembering who played these games  I don't think I've played Counter Strike in about a decade when I was back in high school. I hope I don't regret buying this.

Totally missed that thanks, consider getting it, since I never played any of the monkey island games...
I just hope I wont ragequit because a 12 year old could do a better job solving the puzzles...

A good update in my opinion, tired of people complaining wanting "old CS" back. Hopefully this will open the door to a few content updates but I won't hold my breath. Also don't forget that it now supports the -noborder command.

The problem with the update though is that most of the mods for CSS are broken. No zombie mod, Gun Game, etc. I did not mind the update at all until I found out that the gun game server I normally go on is totally broken. Hopefully Valve and the mod community can fix this up in the next week or so.

Don't get me wrong, that sucks but some people are literally complaining about the killcam thing.

The thing that doesn't effect gameplay and can be turned off is clearly ruining your game.

Not to worry! They've implemented a really nice hint system in these new versions. It's nice because it doesn't reveal the solution until after 3 or 4 button presses, but it'll give you some hints on how to do it.

But yeah, I'd be all over that deal if i didn't snag the first one back when it was $5. But you can gift the first one if you already have it, right? Then perhaps one of my friends would want it for $5...

I wonder what the chances are of ever getting both of them for less than this? I've been thinking that I'd like to get them, as I picked up the LucasArts pack the other week when it was on sale, but I've been buying a lot of games lately, and really need to cut back. But I don't want to miss out on a chance to get these at a great price.

*sigh*

OH fuck.

Steam Summer Sale on right now. Looks to be organized similarly to the Winter Sale.

It's time to be broke! I'd write up a more organized post, but I don't really have time.

Today's Daily Deals:

Counter Strike Source: 6.80
Killing Floor: 5.00
Aion: 19.99
Unreal Deal Pack (Every Unreal Game): 13.60
Trine: FOUR DOLLARS.
Dirt 2: 10.00
Bioshock 2: 14.99
Overlord Complete Pack (Overlord 1, Raising Hell and Overlord 2) : $4.50

In for the Overlord pack. If you don't have Trine, buy it.

I haven't played bioshock 1 yet (already got it though, and I'll play it soon), the deal for bioshock 2 something to jump on right away for $15?

Id appreciate if anybody can comment on some of the more obscure games in this sale.

ive currently got killing floor and the witcher enhanced in my cart.

edit - oops, ill discuss the deal in the deals section thread.

Sweet, I went for it.
It better be as good as everyone is saying it is :p

and damn, summer sale :O
I'll stick to my wintersale strategy and wait untill all the 1day only deals are done and see what else there is that might be interesting on the very last day ;D

Unless I'm wrong, you can discuss the steam deals here--I'm not sure if you're asking about the games on sale on the front page, or *all* the games currently on sale (a ton of them). If you're asking about killing floor, excellent game for $5 imo--its kind of like counter-strike with the purchase weapons thing, and left for dead with the waves of hordes coming at you.

Oh geez... is it going to be one of those things where they'll re-do sales at the end of the week?

Buy now.. buy later...? =/
Awesome thread. I still think Steam needs Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II.

Maybe good things will come in 2010.
I never play Baldur's Gate before. I hear everyone says it was best pc game ever. I already ordered the completed collection of Baldur's Gates from amazon. O_O I can't wait to play it for whole weekends.
To everyone that has never played the Unreal series. By the pack that is on sale. NOW.
Yes! My recommendation is to encourage my friends to buy the Unreal series because it is worth a lot of funs!

So I'm definitely getting Bioshock 2. BUT........ kinda thinking about the 2k Games pack for $90. Kinda expensive, but there's a shitton of stuff in there. Tho I already have some of it...

...

Maybe I just talked myself out of it.

I want Blood Bowl and a lot of other stuff, but I guess I'll wait to see if any of them end up as deals.

This really is Holiday Sale 2.0. Merry Christmas, you mother shaq fu-ers!
