The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

I don't personally enjoy using WASD to move, though I can handle it if necessary. I use the analog stick on the Logitech G13 instead.

Does Team Fortress 2 support the Xbox 360 controller?
I hope your using the mouse with WASD. Using a mouse and keyboard is probably the easiest way of playing a FPS. Ever.
I am, and it's not easy to me at least. I prefer the arrow keys, but I don't see how you can jump or anything like that if I changed it. I don't doubt with practice that I could get good at it, but it's not something I find easy to use.

Well if your REALLY having that much trouble I say get a Xbox 360 controller. Most Valve games support a game pad, so no trouble.

Just wondering, for those who use a/s/d/w or whatever, do you just handle the keyboard in the same left hand position as if you're typing? I think a big problem is, I never really learned how to type well with the standard keyboard stance. I type with two fingers, lol. I do it extremely fast, its not a problem either, but I can see why it would hurt me in this case.

Middle finger on the W/S, ring finger on the A, index on the D

I never properly learned to type and playing games on the PC, specifically FPS's is like walking it's so easy. Granted, I've been playing FPS's on the PC since around '98, but still, it didn't take longer than like an hour to get comfortable with everything.

I let my left hand fingers rest on W, A, D, my pinky sits on the shift key, and my thumb lays on the space bar. If I need to hit ctrl, my pinky takes care of that. If you aren't doing that, try it.

I turn my keyboard clockwise just a tad. It's more comfortable for the angle my hand naturally rests at.

Just find what's comfortable for you and just play. Soon WASD will be as natural as anything else to you.

Yeah man, you'll get used to it. Like others have said, there's certainly no shame in a gamepad either, but mouse/keyboard is also pretty well renowned, and I don't think it has anything to do with office typing ability. :)

I learned to type from Sierra text adventure games when I was 7. :D I eventually somehow managed to develop a style pretty similar to the official (or whatnot), though I'm sure I do a few things wrong, but I can type in excess of 120 wpm. I'd imagine I owe that to those old games and also to Prodigy chat and lots of e-mail as a teenager.

Don't think it helps my gaming ability in any fashion tho honestly.
Wow I sucked at TF2. Trying it out, and I'm not really a PC gamer at all, and I can't get the hang of the controls at all. People really use the a/s/d/w keys to move around??? Sheesh, I played a little bit of the offline mode and one game gives me hand cramps and I can't get beyond rudimentary moving around like that. I feel like a 4 year old playing Super Mario Bros for the first time or something, LOL. I'm sure I could get better if I got into it, but it seems like the sort of thing that you have to invest a lot of time into to get good at.
It took me 30 hours to learn WASD when I moved from console TF2 to PC TF2, keep playing...you'll get use to it soon enough.

Ignore the people saying you can use the gamepad, you will get raped trying to play against K&M people.

Exactly. While it's nice to have the option, after 10 minutes of getting totally dominated by people with a keyboard and mouse, you'll wind up switching right back. Just work with it, it's not that hard. You'll get used to it a lot faster than you think.

Exactly man, that's how I game on the PC.

I used to play deathmatch in the original Quake with the keyboard and... just that. S'how I grew up playing FPSes when there wasn't that pesky y-axis to worry about (i.e. Wolfenstein 3D). My buddy told me I was nuts and eventually got me to use the mouse as well.
Could anyone help me out with TF2 on mac? I just need someone to login for me so I can score those exclusive earbuds.
^this.

I still feel like kicking myself for not pre-ordering L4D2 and getting Bill's beret. So, if anyone with access to TF2Mac feels like doing some solid favors for some fellow CAGs, it would be much appreciated. (My aging Mac runs Tiger :dunce:and TF2 requires 10.5.8 & GeForce 8).

Damn, you guys are trusting. I'd never give my Steam login info to some random person in hopes they'd give me a TF2 hat.

I already erased my credit card info and besides its easy to get back your account, as long as you know the super secret answer to the super secret question.

Can I ask you guys for a game recommendation.

I am looking for a multiplayer game preferably a FPS where you unlock new items and stats by playing awhile (Something similar to the leveling up system in Modern Warfare 2 but I am not interested in Modern Warfare 2).

I need a new shooter to play that's not TF2 or L4D and I am not interested in Call of Duty.

Thanks

Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2

You could try some free to play Korean MMOFPS. Go to Nexon or some other portal like that.

im hoping somebody can help me out with mtg:duels of the planeswalkers. im trying to figure out how the steam version will handle the two headed monster mode. on xbla it was played by two players on one xbox.

I cant find anywhere addressing this.

As a general RTS fan (especially of the Relic games & SotSE), I remember hearing negative things of the newer Command and Conquer games (did like, and own Generals, and played one of the first ones back in the day) Any of the ones offered today worth jumping on? C&C4 isn't much of a deal, but $15 or less for one or two of the others doesn't seem too bad...

I know some people who will say that Generals is the peak of C&C, and I really liked Tiberium Wars. But RA3 was.... nothing spectacular. Haven't tried C&C4, so you might have to look around the net and check out the mediocre reviews. It does have one of those "always online" DRM.

C&C 4 is not worth it, not because of the DRM but because they fucked up the RTS gameplay. RA3 was ok but, but nothing special. I would recommend getting the first decade collection since you get every game before C&C 3, and then you can catch up on the cheesy cutscenes. Unless you need a steam version which C&C 3 or RA3 will do.

I'll give you guys a hint to truly keep your account safe.

You can set it up so that any changes to the password have to be verified by your email and email only. That way, if someone hi-jacks your account they can't change your pass unless they have access to your email account. It's in your account settings, I forget. Steam sends the verification to your email. So unless they can get into your email, they can't change a thing.

But when I found out I could do that I set it up right away.

Was hoping to check out spore at the $10-15 mark, given that it was described as a mediocre game by many, but ~$27 is a bit much, as well as the complete at $60...

Counter Strike Source coming to Mac soon, lets hope they don't ruin the simple menu like they did with Team Fortress 2.

And Trine 2 is being published by Atlus! Weird. Those guys have their hands in a lot of buckets. That's probably how they stay afloat. Can't make enough just bringing over kooky Japanese games, unfortunately. :(

Trine 2 looks like a great choice.

A patch for Magic the Gathering today fixes some of the bugs. Still no text chat, online co-op, etc. But hey, it's progress!

bit on mirror's edge since I missed it during the holiday sale, enjoyed my copy of the ps3 version so why not try the pc one for $5, and yay trine 2 on the way. And regretting not jumping on the magic the gathering game sooner gunna try the demo, maybe should just get it given how much I've spent on the actual cards over the years. Also this is amusing, from the games steam store page.

Purchase Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers and pick up a foil Nissa Revane promo card!*
If you are eligible to receive a promo card (see Terms & Conditions) then select View Games Library off of the Games tab on your Steam window, right click on Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers and click on Register your game to register.
Grab yours now before they are gone!

*(while supplies last – some restrictions apply)

They will.
great deal on mass effect 1 & 2, thinking I'll jump on the digital deluxe edition, unless there is some reason I shouldn't....
Actually, I was just about to report on this (can't believe we're the first!); I was going to say something like, "Fantastic deal on Mass Effect, good deal on Mass Effect 2; "Digital Deluxe" version remains a horrendous rip-off."

I guess I just don't get the value of a "digital" art book and whatnot. That kind of crap should be free with the game already. Maybe if they were gonna send it to you in physical form, yeah, but they ain't.

Just my cheap ass opinion. :) I bought the regular ME2, tho, and already got the first for like $7 at one point or another. I think this is the cheapest it's ever been and probably this is the cheapest ME2 will be til Christmas.

Whee! Coffee and deals. I still want Blood Bowl, though, darn it.

People should definitely be picking up ME2. It's easily been my favorite game this year and if you're on the fence I'd say go for it.

However, it's very possible that it might win GotY from somewhere and then a GotY edition would be out with all the premium DLC included (they currently cost $7 each).

I'm hoping that Dragon Age does something like that in the future. Get all the premium add-ons and Awakening in one go.

Is ME2 worth it for someone who didn't finish the first one because they thought it was boring? I got close to the end but the game just started to bore me. I've heard the second one is a lot more action oriented, so it has me interested.

Oh I was thinking of the in game extras, but was thinking there was more...looks like only one armor and 2 rifles, but looking over it, maybe even the soundtrack might make it worth it....hmm...I'm sure I"ll get at least the base version, but anyone have a take on the in-game bonuses (armor & rifles?)

edit: looking at the DLC for ME2, it doesn't look like you can buy the collector's edition equipment (doesn't really say, actually) but I'm wondering if the extra $12 for these 3 items would make it worth it...probably not :)
