The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.
Why is it a useless disk? If they can not install the steam version, but can still install the game and play it on their PC then how is it a useless disk? Selling a game to someone without the steam activation key is more akin to selling a collectors edition without one of the collectors items. That is unless when you activate the steam version you can no longer play the disk version.
It's a useless disc because all the disc does is install the game. Once you use the CD-Key, you've tied the game permanently to your Steam account. No one else, regardless of whether they own the disc or not, will be able to play the game because you've already used your key.

There is no disc version and Steam version, there is just one version that goes through Steam. This is why people that got the game early, and installed from the disc, couldn't play until Steam unlocked the game this morning.

It is nothing like selling a collectors edition without the items.

As I said, next time do not assume things.
I wasn't assuming anything. I was using "you" as a shortcut for "potential anonymous seller." Which is why I always referred back to your original question of "what stops people from doing this"

Next time, clarify what you're asking and what you want to know.

MSI, I believe after you redeem the key, the disc is basically useless because being a Steamworks game; it's going to make you install Steam with it anyway. From what I understand, the only difference buying it retail is that you don't have to download the files, and you get a box. :)

so why cant i get the cradle of civilization DLC to download? i go to activate a product on steam, enter the code and it acts like it is just installing civ 5 again. i dont see it anywhere on the menu, unless im just missing it.
Got my Lara Croft demo key today. Downloading it right now. After hearing so much positive stuff about this game, I'm pretty pumped to check it out.
Same here. Also downloading.

However, my interest has been muffled when I read this:

Gamespot: Downloadable Lara Croft online co-op misses PS3/PC launch.

Super annoying. First they couldn't finish it in time for the XBLA launch (but sure as hell weren't going to delay it as they'd miss out on the money for being a Summer of Arcade title!), and now for PS3 and PC too? Definitely going to wait for a $5 sale on this one. And by then, they'll have actually finished the game.

Right click on Civ5 in your Steam library and see if there's a "View Downloadable Content" option. If there is, then it's probably listed in there. At least that's the way it is with Borderlands.

yep, there it is, thanks alot, havent dealt with steam a whole lot.

Just finished up the Lara Croft trial. The game is fun, but the keyboard controls are atrocious. Even if you change things to your liking, the control with WASD is pretty bad. There's one challenge (it's not mandatory) to jump across seven platforms without touching the ground. About 15 minutes of the 23 minutes it took to complete the level were spent on this. It's outright impossible to complete because with WASD you can only move in eight directions. You can complete every jump except the final one because you cant quite jump in the correct direction.

Pretty dumb, but I'm quite sure a controller with an analog stick would remedy this. I don't currently have the Xbox controller installed, but I'm going to download the drivers and install it later for a second run through.

All in all, I like the game, but it not having multiplayer support means I'll be waiting to pick this up. It's fun alone, but seems as if it'd be much more enjoyable with a partner.

Yeah, you'll have a much easier time with a controller. When I played the trial on the 360, I completed that challenge without falling (maybe once). Also, all the puzzles and timed jumps were no trouble at all.

But yeah, I hear you. This'll be a game to play with friends and not so much alone.

Preordering Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light gets you a few copy of Tomb Raider Legend. God, they know how to get my money. I WAS gonna hold off because of the online MP thing, but I really wanna play Legend.

LOL. Same here. Had no interest in preordering but then they add a carrot in the form of a game I don't have.

Yeah, that PS3 thing is too cool. Great day to be a CAG!

Also, Steam's midweek sale is Droplitz for $2. I think there are so many better puzzle games to play, $2 would still be a waste for me. But hey, different strokes.

Exactly. That's why I decided to hold off. I've already got a bunch of other puzzle games I hardly play that I got for $2. No need to add another one.
IGN actually reviewed Recettear! http://pc.ign.com/articles/112/1122506p1.html
Oh for sure! I generally agree with them so this may decide whether I buy it sooner rather than later. Thanks for the heads up! :D

EDIT:
OOOOOOUUUUUUCCCHHHHH. Highest resolution is 1280 x 960?! LOL What am I expecting though. Guess it costs real money to operate in HD.

I think I might just hold out for a steam sale. The game seems very refreshing and intriguing though.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/21/wot-i-think-civilization-v/

A far better look at Civ V than either of those reviews. That Kotaku review was one of the most shallow reviews I've read on the site, and I actually enjoy their reviews for the most part. No offense, EastX.

Rock Paper Shotgun should be the first stop for anyone with an interest in PC gaming. For anyone on the fence about Civ V, it's real, real good. I'm not the best person to recommend it to anyone though since I only paid half price for it, so my opinion is a bit swayed by that (and I've only put two hours into it).

They also covered Recettear a few weeks ago:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/11/wot-i-think-recettear-an-item-shops-tale/

The four guys who run it have their finger all over the pulse of the PC world. One of my favorite sites. Just gotta get used to UK humor if that's not your thing.

I got super excited for Civ V after reading the PC Gamer cover story on it (subscribed for five bucks a couple months ago; it's actually a good magazine). My problem is that I have a huge backlog and I'm not buying any new games until I complete it. Never played the series before and the screenshots and reviews have really impressed.
I just read an article off of destructoid that says Tomb Raider will be getting free DLC...on the xbox 360. Everyone else has to pay for it. Assholes.
EDIT: Well, that may be the case. I jumped to conclusion based on how eidos has been giving xbox the timed exclusivity on everything about this game.
http://www.destructoid.com/guardian-of-light-will-get-free-downloadable-content-184542.phtml
Hey when I went to the URL you posted Avast Anti-Virus told me the site had malicious content on it.....what does that mean ?

Is destructoid under attack ?

I bit on Droplitz. Anyone getting nervous that the Christmas sale is coming? I still have not played 60-70% of what I bought during the last sale.....

Any big hopes for the sale? Personally I think I am going to wait on Civ V and make that my big hope for the sale(hopefully at $30 but id settle for $35).

I'd like to say, anyone on the fence about Lara Croft because it doesn't have online multiplayer...GET IT. That first level in the PC demo does not do this game justice. The puzzles get harder/much more fun. I'm a little over half way through it and I'm absolutely loving it. It's basically Gauntlet + Uncharted = Lara Croft.

Same problem here--on both counts

Droplitz--only $2? soo many games I have yet to play, let alone beat, but it's only $2....

I'm going to wait on civ5, only due to recently purchasing the civ4 pack (owned civ4 retail for a while), and only playing regular & warlords and not even touching the last two expansions (beyond the sword and colonization).

Damn League of Legends :)

Wow. I'm just surfing the web at the gaming lab lounge at my school. The supervisor metioned about Steam being downloaded onto a PC, which is a no-no there. The people who are there just play WoW all the time and there response was, what is Steam? :wall:
Wait, it's a gaming lounge with PC's, yet Steam isn't allowed?

Gaming lab lounge.
Wait, it's a gaming lounge with PC's, yet Steam isn't allowed?

They don't want people downloading anything on the computers. It is really only meant to cater to the WoW crowd since there are only a few RTS games like AoE and Starcraft 1 on there. That is pretty much why I just avoid those computers since I'm not a WoW player. It's just a community college anyway, not a big university. I just found it pathetic that they didn't even know what Steam was.

Why should they know what Steam is? People who play WOW aren't PC gamers. 99% of them have zero knowledge about anything PC related aside from WOW.
Serious Sam HD: Gold Edition just went up. This pack gets you both the original, and the remake versions of both games. It normally sells for $39.99, but it's on sale for $10 right now, which is THE GREATEST DEAL IN STEAM HISTORY. BUY BUY BUY.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/901553/
Indeed! If I didn't already snag both HD versions for $7.50 during the holiday sale, I'd be all over this.
Why should they know what Steam is? People who play WOW aren't PC gamers. 99% of them have zero knowledge about anything PC related aside from WOW.
Oh come on, 99% of WoW players don't know ANYTHING about computers? I wouldn't say it's that high. But I do agree that there is HUGE chunk of the WoW playerbase that probably aren't very PC savvy.

Yeah, my GF's WoW friends don't play any other PC games except maybe Starcraft 2. It's difficult to respect them.

Anyone know if there will be a pre-load for Dead Rising 2? If not I'd almost just rather order from Amazon with release date shipping.

Steam should be releasing Age of Wonders real soon, maybe by the end of today? -

Impulse just released the trilogy today, it's $19.99 for all three games (AoW, AoW 2 and Shadow Magic). I imagine Steam will follow the same path. Saving $5 over the GOG model, where it's $25 for all three games.

You get the game soundtrack as a bonus if you buy the three game pack, as well.

DELFT, NETHERLANDS. – Sept 24, 2010. Triumph Studios announces the release of its award wining turnbased fantasy strategy series: Age of Wonders series on digital distribution platforms. The titles include the original Age of Wonders, Age of Wonders II: The Wizard’s Throne and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic.
All the games are fully patched and work under new PC configurations. The series can be bought as a bundle in the Age of Wonders: Trilogy Pack which includes the games soundtrack as a bonus.
Digital Distribution Partners includes: Impulse, Good Old Games and Steam, with future partners to be announced.
WoW only players sicken me :D

that explains why I dont listen to the IGN GirlFight podcast anymore ;)
That podcast is horrendous. Most the "gamer girls" over at IGN are complete fakes and are hired just to lure dudes in with "hey check it out guys, girls that play games" schtick. In reality, all they do is play WOW, Farmville, and whatever other dumb Facebook games are out there. They definitely aren't "gamers".

The only one that's got an ounce of credibility is Chobot, and that's really not saying much as she gives off the same vibe as Olivia Munn in that she'll do anything to be famous.

I haven't heard anything, I think there's a thread on Stem forums though.

I wonder if we buy the DVD ROM version if we will need the disk in the tray to play.. I hope not, that crap gets annoying.

If that's the case, just download a no-CD crack.

Apparently you can start pre-loading Dead Rising 2 on Steam. Just run the following and it should start downloading.

Recettear doing well is quite interesting. Could be a spark for the Japanese PC market. Having access to a worldwide pc community through digital distribution services like steam could send a lot of smaller developers over to make pc games/ports.

I've been thinking about how well a Disgaea port to the iphone could do, now I'm wondering how a steam version of Disgaea could do. Especially if they open up the game for the modding community. Etrian Odyssey is a natural fit for the PC as well, and the modding community could do great things for this game as well with a dungeon editor.

As for localizing existing pc games, Xseed is sitting on a goldmine of falcom stuff. Atlus, Aksys, and NISA could all get in on the action too. It'll be quite interesting to see how this all plays out. Kudos to Carpe Fulgur for showing the untapped potential of the pc market for japanese games.

How did it do btw? I bought it, and liked it...wouldn't playing other interesting Japanese Indie Games.

Well the port wasn't in house, some guys from SA did it which is why Recattear is kind of an interesting case.

Yeah there is a significant difference between what happened here (Japanese indie game developed exclusively for PC, being translated by a couple of SomethingAwful goons), and NIS starting to port Disgaea to PC, or whatever.
Not really allowed to talk about that, SEH (not the pre-load thing...the thing you said before that).
A no-CD crack? You still have to purchase the game legally. All the crack does is make it so you don't need to put the disc in every single time.
