All these sales recently have dragged me back into PC gaming and have led me to CAG. The last game I completed on PC would have been Diablo II years and years ago and the last multiplayer PC game I played much of was Quake 3 Area or UT. Since then I've gone through various stages of console gaming or not gaming at all.
The cheap prices on Steam recently have let me pick up a lot of the games I've missed out on over the last 10 years for next to nothing. I followed the Steam Holiday deal thread when the sale was on and bit on a lot of the deals that got discussed there. Thanks MSI Magnus for kicking things off here and everyone else who's helped turn this into a thread worth coming back to.
Before I found out about the holiday sale I owned 0 PC games (not counting old, old stuff thats probably still in a box at my parents'). I now have 52 full games listed in my Steam library which is worth $420.29 USD (+ a bit more because Titan Quest is on sale) for an outlay of $125.68.
I keep caving in on midweek and weekend deals. I thought it would all slow down after the holiday sale. Are the sale prices usually as good as they have been the last couple of weeks? If so I might need to star pacing myself. Entertainment value per dollar is insane I just don't know when I'll find the hours to play all these games. Even though I know it'll take years to get through everything I already have, $2, $5 or even sometimes $10 is too cheap to resist. The cheapness in me is starting to make things expensive.
Because I've been away from things for so long I'm still catching up with what's happened over the last 10 years or so. This has led to me missing out on one or two deals I would have probably enjoyed. I passed on Company of Heroes the other week because I was too busy to investigate what it was. Turns out from the demo I think I'd really like it.
I had a bit more time to check out Psychonauts when it was the midweek deal and was suprised to see Tim Schafer's name attached. The dude was responsible for some of my favourite old school Lucas Arts adventures so I bought immediately and have been really glad I did. Since then I've also picked up the X-Com pack because I used to love those games, Freedom Force because it looks like some goofy fun and Titan Quest because I don't mind a good hack and slash.
This all leads me to my question -
What are the best games of the last 10 years available on Steam - games that are or were at the top of their genre, had a unique take on things or were just unlike anything else? And what sale price would make it an immediate buy for you? I guess a similar, possibly better quesion is what is the best sale deal you've got so far on Steam?
Best I've picked up so far have been:
Orange Box $15 - so many good games for so little money. Wouldn't be suprised if it's been cheaper but happy with the purchase regardless.
STALKER: SoC $1.50 I think that $1.50 will go a very long way. Have only had a quick play so far and haven't installed the Complete 2009 mod yet but looks like this will be a time sink.
Rome: Total War $2.50 I played Shogun years ago and loved the scale of the battles and the strategic turn based aspect as well. Seems deep enough that I'll be putting a fair bit of time in here too.
Mass Effect $5 To me something doesn't seem quite right with the controls or with giving orders to your party members but that could just be me. Enjoying the blend of sci-fi and roleplaying enough to get used to things.
Psychonauts $2 Reminds me a lot of the Invader Zim cartoon. Loving the style and humour so far.
Civ IV Complete $13.60 more expensive than the others I know but still thought it was a bargain because I love e some Civ.
I know it's a broad question and there's probably some obvious answers but I bet there's a few other tightarse (Aussie for cheapass) Steam newcomers lurking around here.
Wow. That's got to be the longest first post I've ever made.
Well welcome to both the CAGer and Steam Community.
I was like you that I had never been a big PC gamer. Most of my PC gaming was Diablo 1 and 2 and everything else I tried to get into just didnt stick. Id rather be playing on a console! Steam however combined with the support of the 360 gamepad and the fact that Tower Defense games are just a good fit for mouse/keyboard has brought me more into PC gaming. I think thats the case for a lot of people, steam has brought in many a console gamers with sales....even if some were brought in kicking and screaming
And Holy crap man you went nuts........$422 on the steam sale. I think you topped even me! Sounds like you made some great purchases though and its totally understandable dropping a bunch if your buying them on sale/getting a lot of games for your money. Just so long as you dont put yourself into financial hardship in the process
I will respond to your later question in a bit. I need to update the main page and have a few other things to do real fast. After I do ill compare your question to my steam list and do a little fast searching to try and give you better answers.
Like I said welcome to the community bro! Nice to have more members, especially people that are actively posting questions other then me
Edit - In the mean time if you tell us a bit more abut what type of games tend to be your favorites it will make it easier to give you good reccomendations. I have a feeling your like me(your listed games are similar to games I like) and enjoy a good RPG but will play anything if its quality, but I dont want to waste my time suggesting Defense Grid to you if you hate Tower Defense for example.
