The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

What's more annoying is when something is on sale for, say, $25, and you're like, woot, I've been wanting that, and you buy it.

Then, before you even play it much, a week later, it's on sale again... for $7.

Well let's be a little grateful here - $10 bucks is still a great price - sure - 2 months later it is 50% less, BUT at least we are speaking great sales here. In the end whether you pay 50 bucks or 100 bucks for TEN great games - you are winning.

Now if I paid 60 for a game and 2 months later it was 30 - I'd be more upset - but that is why I don't do that.

See im less annoyed about the 1 week its $10 then one week its $5 thing simply because thats a big part of how steam functions. Valve's model for making money with steam is based on the psychology of sales after all.

What annoys me is buying the game then feeling like I miss out on several other sales because they are repeating the same damn game 3 times within a few months.

I agree with you there but it is just a part of life. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don't

Ah, I see MSI Magus' point. But I think it's just a supply issue. There are only so many indie and older games that Steam can put on sale - with a midweek sale and sometimes 3 weekend deals Steam needs at least 104 games to put on sale in any year.

I think it's only natural they have to repeat some games from time to time. The upside is as their catalog gets older and games age, they will add new games to the deals that way.

I kind of liked Torchlight - not sure about Freedom Force... so I am not sure about Titan Quest...
Well, I wouldn't really compare Freedom Force, but Torchlight is of course a valid analogue.
Really?

Maybe I am making it too basic, but the game play seemed similar to me. Walk around, click to hit people.

I prefer Torchlight because you click and he does what you want... didn't like Freedom Force because you had to use commands or separate buttons.

This seems more like Torchlight though.

We're getting sales every week. That's good enough for me.

I paid $5 for the Titan Quest bundle back in September when D2D was running its sale. It's well worth the price, assuming you like the genre.

On Torchlight vs. Titan's Quest:
If you're meh about hack and slash, I can't imagine you'd want both Torchlight and Titan's Quest. They're very similar games. I don't think TQ has Torchlight's replayability, but the main quest is longer and (IMO) more interesting. If you were put off by Torchlight's slightly cartoony aspect (which I like), this is the game for you.

Well, I'm probably being rigid, but most genre distinctions are pretty rigid (then again, these are essentially all "RPGs" tho!). If you can include Freedom Force and Torchlight in the same grouping, then we'd have to put Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins and the like in there as well.

But they think they're different because you can pause and issue orders, almost like an RTS (ew).

Just two different bends in the same river, I suppose, but one bend has stagnated and gotten all full of pee and stuff. :)

I'm just being dramatic now. And crotchety because I miss turn-based RPGs.

I'm with you on the turn based RPG's man. Did you ever play D&D Temple of the Elemental Evil? That was a pretty damn good turn based game with a good story. It got bad reviews because of stability issues, but I never had any problems running it back then.

I wish it was available on Steam seeing as I can't seem to find my hard copy.

I miss old school turn base RPGs as well. Games are being all streamlined and made easy nowadays due to such large audiences.

I miss the days where you had to keep it a secret you were a gamer.

Now we got every dickwad and grandmother calling themselves one and games are being steamed down to fit to their larger demographic

I haven't played it, and I really want to! I have a copy which I could NOT get to work on Windows Vista. I'm hoping I can get it to work on Windows 7. It would be great if Steam picked it up.

Tho I gotta say, it's too bad the whole game takes place trudging around in a dungeon. Ah, for an epic fantasy RPG with turn-based combat.

If you like puzzle games check out Toki Tori, it is on sale for $3.75 right now. Just started playing it and it just oozes of cuteness and seems pretty damn good so far. Devs are real active on their steam forum as well it seems

I have Toki Tori on the wii. I got a ton of wii points half off once at walmart so I bought it then. The cuteness factor on it is through the roof and it was worth the 5 bucks I spent on it back then.

The only old school Turn Based games that are worth playing are the free ones.

A few companies get it right though like 'StrategyFirst' Disciples series and a few others but TBS games are now strictly indie territory.

All these sales recently have dragged me back into PC gaming and have led me to CAG. The last game I completed on PC would have been Diablo II years and years ago and the last multiplayer PC game I played much of was Quake 3 Area or UT. Since then I've gone through various stages of console gaming or not gaming at all.

The cheap prices on Steam recently have let me pick up a lot of the games I've missed out on over the last 10 years for next to nothing. I followed the Steam Holiday deal thread when the sale was on and bit on a lot of the deals that got discussed there. Thanks MSI Magnus for kicking things off here and everyone else who's helped turn this into a thread worth coming back to.

Before I found out about the holiday sale I owned 0 PC games (not counting old, old stuff thats probably still in a box at my parents'). I now have 52 full games listed in my Steam library which is worth $420.29 USD (+ a bit more because Titan Quest is on sale) for an outlay of $125.68.

I keep caving in on midweek and weekend deals. I thought it would all slow down after the holiday sale. Are the sale prices usually as good as they have been the last couple of weeks? If so I might need to star pacing myself. Entertainment value per dollar is insane I just don't know when I'll find the hours to play all these games. Even though I know it'll take years to get through everything I already have, $2, $5 or even sometimes $10 is too cheap to resist. The cheapness in me is starting to make things expensive.

Because I've been away from things for so long I'm still catching up with what's happened over the last 10 years or so. This has led to me missing out on one or two deals I would have probably enjoyed. I passed on Company of Heroes the other week because I was too busy to investigate what it was. Turns out from the demo I think I'd really like it.

I had a bit more time to check out Psychonauts when it was the midweek deal and was suprised to see Tim Schafer's name attached. The dude was responsible for some of my favourite old school Lucas Arts adventures so I bought immediately and have been really glad I did. Since then I've also picked up the X-Com pack because I used to love those games, Freedom Force because it looks like some goofy fun and Titan Quest because I don't mind a good hack and slash.

This all leads me to my question -

What are the best games of the last 10 years available on Steam - games that are or were at the top of their genre, had a unique take on things or were just unlike anything else? And what sale price would make it an immediate buy for you? I guess a similar, possibly better quesion is what is the best sale deal you've got so far on Steam?

Best I've picked up so far have been:

Orange Box $15 - so many good games for so little money. Wouldn't be suprised if it's been cheaper but happy with the purchase regardless.

STALKER: SoC $1.50 I think that $1.50 will go a very long way. Have only had a quick play so far and haven't installed the Complete 2009 mod yet but looks like this will be a time sink.

Rome: Total War $2.50 I played Shogun years ago and loved the scale of the battles and the strategic turn based aspect as well. Seems deep enough that I'll be putting a fair bit of time in here too.

Mass Effect $5 To me something doesn't seem quite right with the controls or with giving orders to your party members but that could just be me. Enjoying the blend of sci-fi and roleplaying enough to get used to things.

Psychonauts $2 Reminds me a lot of the Invader Zim cartoon. Loving the style and humour so far.

Civ IV Complete $13.60 more expensive than the others I know but still thought it was a bargain because I love e some Civ.

I know it's a broad question and there's probably some obvious answers but I bet there's a few other tightarse (Aussie for cheapass) Steam newcomers lurking around here.

Wow. That's got to be the longest first post I've ever made.

Oops forgot to answer the other part of my own question - instant buy prices for some other games I've got my eye on:

The Longest Journey - $2-$5 for just the first game, up to $7.50 if bundled with the sequel I guess.

Prince of Persia - $2 for any of the older ones, $5 for the newest or $10 for a pack.

Secret of Monkey Island - $2-$5. Classic game made pretty. I'd pay the standard $10 if I didn't have such a big backlog already.

Oblivion - $5-$7.50. Have heard so many good things. Would pick up the pack with Morrowind for $7.50-$10 in a second.

Fallout 3 - $10. Loved the predecessors back in the day. Looks interesting.

I'm open to other genres just not as sure what would be a good deal.

Well welcome to both the CAGer and Steam Community.

I was like you that I had never been a big PC gamer. Most of my PC gaming was Diablo 1 and 2 and everything else I tried to get into just didnt stick. Id rather be playing on a console! Steam however combined with the support of the 360 gamepad and the fact that Tower Defense games are just a good fit for mouse/keyboard has brought me more into PC gaming. I think thats the case for a lot of people, steam has brought in many a console gamers with sales....even if some were brought in kicking and screaming ;)

And Holy crap man you went nuts........$422 on the steam sale. I think you topped even me! Sounds like you made some great purchases though and its totally understandable dropping a bunch if your buying them on sale/getting a lot of games for your money. Just so long as you dont put yourself into financial hardship in the process ;)

I will respond to your later question in a bit. I need to update the main page and have a few other things to do real fast. After I do ill compare your question to my steam list and do a little fast searching to try and give you better answers.

Like I said welcome to the community bro! Nice to have more members, especially people that are actively posting questions other then me ;)

Edit - In the mean time if you tell us a bit more abut what type of games tend to be your favorites it will make it easier to give you good reccomendations. I have a feeling your like me(your listed games are similar to games I like) and enjoy a good RPG but will play anything if its quality, but I dont want to waste my time suggesting Defense Grid to you if you hate Tower Defense for example.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

That list of free games is awesome. I'm downloading Oolite because Elite was one of the first games I really got into as a kid. I'm sure I'll find lots of other good stuff in the list. Nice work.

Funny you should say that about similar tastes MSI, I've thought that too when I've read some of your posts. No financial hardship yet but that may change if the sales keep up. I've only spent $125 in total on Steam and everything I've bought has been on sale. If I had of bought the same things at non-sale prices it'd be up around $420.

That number sort of hints at how I got out of PC gaming for so long. As a kid and young teenager I played a lot of games, mainly on PC. Once I discovered chicks, partying, snowboarding and travelling my money and time went elsewhere and gaming took a back seat. That would have been mid-nineties. Ever since then it seems like I've latched onto a game every few years and played it to death in between long periods of not playing anything at all.

Starting with the PS One and continuing with the original XBox, I played less and less PC games over time. College also got in the way around that time. This trend has continued for me with consoles lately too. The last console games I played much of were GTA IV and Guitar Hero 3 on my housemate's 360.

So yeah that's my background. I enjoy most types of games as long as they're good enough and don't feel like I'm playing the same thing for the 50th time. Not a massive fan of online FPSs that are so twitchy you have to be hitting the crack pipe between rounds to keep up but I can still have fun with a good FPS when I'm in the mood for it. So yeah feel free to suggest anything really - RPGs, FPSs, RTSs, Adventure, Action, Strategy, Sim, Sport, Racing, Arcade, Platform, Puzzle, real-time, turn-based, it's all good. Even if I don't personally dig it I'm sure others here will.

This is turning into another long winded post. Probably because it's 3am and still over 30C outside (86F for you crazy people with systems that don't make sense :p).

Ok so as far as pricing goes I rec trying to buy games at the 50% off sale price, anything else is just not worth it with as big of sales as steam has. 75% though is really the amazing point because its common we see 75% off but rare we see more then that amount. Just looking over the list of games iv bought so far here are ones I rec.

Alien and Zombie Shooter games
Audiosurf(I hate this game but others swear by it and its on sale for like $1-$3 frequently)
Big Money
Bioshock
Borderlands with Zombie Island DLC
Chains
Chuzzle
Defense Grid
Dead Space
Everquest(come on buy it, ill play it with you!)
Everquest 2
Evil Genius
Freedom Force
Ghost Master
Indigo Prophecy
Jade Empire
Kings Bounty - The Legend and Armored Princess
Killing Floor
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
Lumines
Luxor 1-3
Majesty 1 and 2
Madballs
Max Payne 1 and 2
Mount and Blade
Nation Red
Oddworld Pack
Osmos
Outrun 2006
Painkiller BLack
Peggle - Buy every last damn peggle game that goes on sale!
Plants Vs Zombies
Rocket Mania
RIP Trilogy
Stalker
Tell Tale Pack(though buying the games by individual season as they go ons ale may be cheaper)
Shadow Grounds Pack
Shattered Horizon
Star Wars KNights of the Old Republic
Time Gentlemen, Please!
Titan Quest
Trials 2
Tropico 1-3
Torchlight
Unreal Games
World of Goo
Xcom Series
Zombie Drive
Zombie Shooter
Zombie Bowl O Rama

As for which games I feel I got the best deals on
Nation Red - Only got it for 50% off but iv played a ton of this game and the developers are amazingly cool. I actually feel like I ripped them off at $5

Zombie Bowl or Rama - Got it for $1 which was the perfect price for this little time waster

Plants vs Zombies - Dozens of hours of gameplay with 100s more to come im sure. Got it for $5 and that was quite the value.

Peggle - Dozens of hours for only $1

Everquest - Game came with like 14 of its Xpacks for $5. Iv yet to play it because I want to find someone to play it with....but come on $5 for a game and like 14 xpacks AND a free months play. Thats a deal.

There are 100s of games worth buying I dont own....at first I was going to go through and try and make a nice little list for you to try and catch up with. However you will probaly wait for sales anyways since you have a ton to play right now. So my suggestion is just keep playing your back log and buy stuff you see us rant about here in the forums as they come up for sale!

So do you need games that were strictly PC only? Or have you missed out on a few console games over the year too and wouldn't mind checking out their PC version?

Honestly with what you have and the sales that Steam will be having this year you could probably do well catching up that way, but there are plenty of good games that have come and gone over the years not on steam.

heh...O I thought you meant you had spent $420 so far. Thats not nearly as bad ;)

Just posted a list of games iv bought and enjoyed above. As I said though id wait to buy stuff on sale. If in the mean time you get a bug up your butt for a specific type of game though and dont own it let us know and we can rec something. For instance if you said Tower Defense id say Plants vs Zombies and Defense Grid.

Someone please convince me I dont need to buy all 10 Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 movie posters plus the 2 hand posters then frame them just to cover my game room walls with posters.....

I have been wanting to do this forever and its so freaking tempting now that they have the L4D2 posters bundled. Would only run around $53 shipped...but that would burn up all my fun money for the month and I imagine buying frames for all these will be hella expensive......

Wouldn't Kinkos or Staples be cheaper to make custom posters?

My PC Gaming room has a 6 ft tall by 4ft wide Marvel Universe poster from 1985 that was less than 22 bucks at Staples.

lol I have the TF2 posters from when it first came out, had a friend that worked at valve that sent them to me. He even got a good portion of the dev team to sign the sentry poster cause the engineer is my fav class and only one I play nearly (out of like 120 hours in TF2, like 85 are engineer)

Hmmm see I thought about that awhile back when I was looking to make a collage of classic game characters. My wife said she was almost positive they wouldn't print copy righted material though so I never bothered nor thought of it for L4D. If they will print copy righted stuff then yeah ill just go there.

You just bring the pics you want blown up into posters on a USB thumb drive or what? Also it didnt stretch the image so bad it looked horrid?

Anyone have any clue why my archers might have stopped listening to me in Kings Bounty? Had control of them now all of a sudden they are moving on their own accord, worse they almost never attack anything, just charge right up to the front lines of the battles but refuse to attack.....

Did you come across some archers on the map and recruited them (didn't buy) or did you remove some item(s) that lower your leadership?

Reason I ask is cause if you have more of a unit then your leadership would normally allow, they won't listen to you anymore until the number of them comes back down to what your leadership can handle. I found that out with some villagers, came across a wandering group and next thing I knew I had like 400 of them but they wouldnt listen to me for shit till enough of them died and my leadership was able to control them (note, since they were "meh" units I didn't care about using them as fodder).

If that has happened, if you have a reserve slot from your talents (from the runes) then you can put them their then drop them back into your active army slot and it should pop up telling you you can only use xxx and you can click on the check box, I think that is how it works for that.

Also don't know if anyone else watches the downtime thread on steams forums.

Tomorrow (Feb 4th) at 6pm PST steam will be taken down for around 3 hours. So I suggest making sure everything is updated and putting it into offline mode if that falls into a time when you play normally.

I hope Steam has like a Spring Fling sale so I can waste even more money, why? I dunno I just like buying cheap games!

I was wondering if that was the case. I recruited archers off the map and that was around when they started acting stupid. And yeah like you said I havnt worried too much about it since while it was nice that they ranged attacked they wernt that great anyways.

Another question for you. Do you have any clue where the tent you can hire horsemen is? Someone at gamefaqs said that horsemen/priest is a great combo to get through the early parts of the game yet I cant find the tent with the horsemen! Any other recruits you rec keeping an eye out for?

So far im really enjoying this game and glad I took the risk on it! Nice to know too that when I finish it I have Armored Princess waiting for me!

The tent with the horsemen is in the starting area. It's protected by a horsemen that you probably won't be able to beat until your level 15 or so.

The cause of your archers acting on their own may be due to you changing a piece of equipment that gives leadership and now your number of troops exceeds your leadership. Just hover your cursor over their portrait while outside of combat and it will have a number followed by a slash (eg. 154/157 means you have 154 archers and can have a total of 157). If the first number is greater than the second, you have too many and need to dismiss some archers.

To dismiss the archers just double click the archers and hit the skull button on the window that pops up.

I'm glad your enjoying this wonderful game.

Horsemen are in the first map area with the castle, but they are guarded by a knight, you'll need to be around 13 I think to beat him so don't worry about horsey's for awhile :D

As far as recruits some of my fav are priest till you can upgrade them or start finding spots to get inquestors ,regular soliders, bears (then polar bears when you get to them). Shaman, but you won't come into contact with them till you move to the islands, but they are sweet and I actually do like archers (usually cast dragon arrow on them when I get a chance if needed in battle).

Other units that are good are Archmages, but you will only come across small quantities of them but they are powerful and druids, their base attack is aoe and they can summon bears and charm animals. Oh, Werewolfs when you come across them are great, they put out some hurt.

I'm currently I think lvl 20 almost and I always have inquesitors, soliders, shaman, and some type of bear (polar or ancient whatever is instock or close by :p ).

Though I am starting to mix in new units that I've been coming across that are sweet, but you got awhile before those and you'll know what you are doing and how you like to fight by then.

Heh well there is supposed to be a trick where you can sneak past that Knight and hire horsemen way earlier then your supposed to. However even after finding it I cant seem to sneak past him so I gave up.

This whole Archer situation is annoying. My choice is to either give up my archers or wait for my Leadership to become enough(which is probably another 2-3 levels).

Just noticed I had 68,000 gold so I went ahead and bought a Banner that increases my Leadership by like 500-800ish points. Means I can use my archers again and im guessing since im playing on Easy that gold will be easier to come by then any other resource. Is there any way though to sell items I dont want? I dont see an option for it or any other kind of sell button. Meanwhile im carrying around all sorts of junk I dont need.

New deal posted. Buy Red Faction Metro 2033 and get a copy of Red Faction Guerrilla free. Would be a lot sweeter if it was like Bioshock and had a 4 pack that you could get for around $35 but instead its the full $50!

They shouldn't do copyrighted material. You could get lucky but I doubt it. Walmart won't even print photos that look like they were done in a studio unless you sign something and they keep a copy.

When I need cheap art I just take it from stuff I already have. I bought some 12x12 Record frames and hung up a couple of LPs for my music section.

For my zombie section I took the cool looking inserts from several of my movies and framed 3 at a time in cool glass frames and it looks super cool.

I would do something similar or gather up all those bonus posters games come with and do something neat like that.

The frames are going to cost money, even going the wal-mart route, so if you really want the Left 4 Dead posters you might just be best off with that.

Iv actually been saving old game magazines forever and a half and plan on cutting them up and doing a giant collage in the next few months.

Maybe because I am in NYC they don't care but they never gave me a problem for it before. I do everything via USB :)

Aliens vs Predator (the new one) now has a multiplayer demo. About 1.2-1.3GB.

Very excited to check this out as what I've read of the multiplayer sounds like a ton of fun. I wonder if this will be like the L4D demos and expire when the game is released...

Also, if you pre-order Metro 33 (Russian developed game), you get a free copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla. I've read a couple of interviews and watched a few trailers for Metro 33 and it sounds really cool. But not plop down $50 cool.

Gold is real easy to come by. I've been playing on normal and I haven't exactly been keeping my wallet tight and I have I think almost half a million now.

As for selling, when you go to a castle you can then on the right side of the screen see your inventory underneath your equipped items, just right click and select sell.

Waiting for the A Vs. P Demo to DL. Saw a couple gameplay videos and holy hell it looks great. I never pay full price for a game but if the multiplayer is at least the goods, I'm going to take the plunge as a Birthday present to myself. I played the Universe At War demo and enjoyed that as well.

Tried the AvP demo, wasnt to happy about it everyone was aliens except me and another guy... and they all ran together pretty much even though its deathmatch... so yeah... ragequit...

Being a lonely marine against 5-6 aliens and 1 predator kinda sucks when its deathmatch and people still play it as team deathmatch .

edit: It might be worth mentioning that I'm not really a huge AvP fan either but I really hope the final product is better then what I've seen in the demo.

Are you unhappy because people were playing the game like a team deathmatch or was it because of the gameplay mechanics/graphics/UI/balance/other miscellaneous things?

I think all the aliens roamed together because they didn't want to face each other. As an alien, your greatest advantage is your speed and ability to climb on ANYTHING. I would expect it would easier to kill a predator or marine instead of hunting other players who have the exact same advantages as you. Just a guess.
