There's not a single Spielberg movie that I would be willing to pay $1 to rent. I went to see ET when it was re-released in theaters, since my wife wanted to go. Holy crap was I bored off my ass. I thought, "I liked this when I was a kid?" It's pure, unadulterated pap. There's nothing to his movies, really. Just some visual effects that are nice for the time, and some overt sentimentality. Obviously, Raiders and Jaws don't fit that mold, but they're just plain boring.

Well, different tastes I guess. I don't mind thinking when I watch a movie and for those that don't require it, like ET, it was more of a nostalgia feel. Plus, of course you'll probably be bored with ET since I felt it was always geared to be a kids movie.

I hate to say it, but I'm gonna have to call you an idiot on this one. Obviously you don't know the importance and the impact of the Holocaust. Otherwise you probably wouldn't have just said such an ignorant statement like that. Schindler's List is a movie that tries to portray the hardship of those times and what people had to endure from a tyrant (this is the only word I could think of that wouldn't get blocked by the filter) like Hitler and just to say that you would laugh at that film is ignorant and I personally find it kind of offensive really. It's like laughing at the deaths of millions, even though it is only a movie.

You guys have some real crazy tastes in movies. Indiana Jones redisgned how we look at adventure films in general. It is my opinion that if it weren't for those movies we wouldn't have all these copies of it, and not only in movies. You wouldn't have the movie/game of Tomb Raider, etc. the list is just too extensive.

I think my problem is that I want a movie to make me think. I hate 99% of comedies because, especially lately, gross and/or stupid has come to equal funny. I want wit, dammit! I can also appreciate an artistically done film, where the cinematography is top notch. Or an action film that relies on more than big explosions, but well choreographed movements (by the actors and the camera). Spielberg's directing is bland, and the stories he tells are dreck. Give me thought and art over his stuff any day.

Yes. Adventure films would still be as they were in the old days, just average B films or crap films. I personally enjoy them. I mean, the genre has spun such superb films as Sky Captain, etc.

Exactly. Though Tomb Raider sucks now, back in the day it was just the absolute shit. The controls were awful but it showed us what we can do with 3-d and adventure games and paved the way for a slew of clones and just games that are fun and do it better.

I don't think you're considering when he made a lot of his movies - the 80s. The 80s didn't have a visceral feel to their movies at the time. They were all feel-good time movies that had predictable endings. To find any thought provoking movie was to view an artsy indie film (usually foreign and usually french or russian made). I always view a movie in the context that it was made it and that's how I can appreciate how a film is made. If the Indiana Jones movies were made today in the year 2005, I would call them throwbacks, light on substance and heavy handed on cheesy situations but if viewed from when it was originally made, it was Spielberg's nod to the old adventure radio serials he loved as a child and in that, I think he succeeded.

Which is why I don't like the majority of stuff from the 80's. Just because it came from that time period does not excuse it from not being a better film. Sure, you can say that his films are indicative of an era, but that is also the reasoning behind putting Armageddon and The Rock on Criterion, and both of those movies suck hard.

I disagree. Films don't have to always be everlasting and standing the test of time to be a good film. Those that do are great films but that doesn't detract from appreciating a film made in the 80s and viewed as such. Not all movies have to thinkers either. If a movie has a lot of 'splosions and cheesy plotlines that won't stop me from having fun watching it...which I think is the main point of watching a movie - enjoying it because you find it interesting one way or the other. When I watch movies like Armageddon or The Rock, I'm not expecting Ben Affleck or Sean Connery to emote unto eternity. They're popcorn movies that are meant to please the audience with the 'splosions and hammy acting. Of course, when a movie purports to be one thing and doesn't deliver then I'll call on it. If it's advertising fighting and car chases and superheroes, like fantastic 4, I'm not going to expect Jessica Alba and Chris Evans to engage in a deep philosophical conversation about the mysteries of the universe. I expect her to don her skin tight outfit and pretend she has superpowers and try to save the world (a played out and overused concept as it is). If she does what I expect then the movie fulfilled its purpose - I had fun and expectations were met.

Which, in the end, is the ultimate point of all of this. You are entertained by those films. I'm not. It's a matter of personal taste. I just know that I am incapable of extracting any amount of entertainment from most "popcorn films." My wife loves all of those 80's films, particularly those in the Breakfast Club vein. But we agreed long ago that I will not watch them because I can't stand them personally. I can't laugh at Meet the Fockers or Dodgeball, I can't ooh and ah at whatever big bang movie is out this week. That's just me. If I'm going to spend 2 hours of my day and some of my money, I want more.
