I was trying to think of the three most currently sought after RARE video games. I guess factors for judging this would have to include current asking price for used/new copies of said game, actual number of copies in print, and popularity/reputation, etc.

My vote would go to:

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Suikoden II
Dracula X (Turbo Duo Version)

Honorable mention goes to:
Chrono Trigger (original snes cart)
Valkyrie Profile (not quite rare or extremely popular but pulls a decent buck)

I’m sure I’ve forgotten a bunch, so let’s hear ‘em!

Holy shit! Valkyrie Profile is rare!? I just picked up a used copy at my local FYE for $9.99, and it was mint and complete. Wow.

How much would it fetch, if I may ask?

I believe that the game you're thinking of is Steel Battalion.

nintendo world championships for NES, they only made about 20 copies and it was used for a 1990 Nintendo competition and was given away as a prize in Nintendo Power. A copy can get aroun $6,000 I believe. btw, its a all gold cart if ne of u r gonna go look for it.

Doesn’t matter...I'll buy it off ya' for triple the amount you paid for it.
Seriously though, it runs roughly $55-70 for a mint used copy on eBay, however, my offer still stands!

PM me if you'd like to sell it or trade it :)

Wow!

When I saw it there, I hadn't really heard of the game; it just caught my eye because I really love Norse mythology.

Sorry though--I think I'll be keeping it. Not only because it's rare but also because it's quite fun. :D

Which one? Radiant Silvergun or Valkyrie Profile? If you do find one, the other or both let me know what you want for them :D

Valkyrie Profile. I see a lot of older RPGs, and I pick them up for the hell of it. I bought Legaia 2 (not rare), Ephemeral Fantasia (not rare and allegedly sucks) and Vandal Hearts this past weekend. I think I paid a total of about $32 for all three.

LMAO @ this thread.

*kicks herself in the butt for not buying Radiant Silvergun years ago*

And ever since I heard my favorite game Panzer Dragoon Saga was uber rare, I've had the occasional nightmare involving someone stealing it from my house.

I'm selling my SEALED Panzer Dragoon Saga, for $200, to some kid in Singapore.

He's buying the rest of my Saturn games as well.

I wonder if he'll open it?? He says no.
Maybe it gets more money over there.

Sega Saturn has the most rare games for any system.

I own: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Shining Force 3
Dragon Force

Glad i never bought the system when it came out, and had a buddy who did.

Yeah, those are some of the games I'm selling, as well.

Along with Rayearth, Shining Ark, and some others.

Actually, I'm gonna bail out on that kid now.
Thanks to your post, I checked eBay, and used copies, are fetching $255.

Gracias.

Yeah, PS2 Rez is pretty rare, DreamCast isn't though. However, its nowhere near Panzer Dragoon Saga. It seems like Sega has a lot of rare games.

I think many people have trouble seperating demand from rarity.
Many games that are carrying a high price aren't actually even all that rare... they just have very high demand.
There are also many much rarer games that just don't sell, even at low, low prices.

Many people just seem to use "rare" as a synonym for "valuable"... instead of it's proper meaning.

I was trying to think of the three most currently sought after RARE video games. I guess factors for judging this would have to include current asking price for used/new copies of said game, actual number of copies in print, and popularity/reputation, etc

This suggests that exact practice. The only metrics that are important to something being rare is the number of copies printed and the number of copies in circulation.

Popularity/reputation suggests demand.
Price, it appears, is more often a function of demand rather than rariety.
(there are exceptions, but more often than not that deals with one-offs, prototypes, etc... and not mass produced games.

Come on people!!

How can you not name SNATCHER for Sega CD in this topic?

It regularly goes for over $100 on Ebay and is one the most sought after and loved games of its time. I got mine for $12.99 brand new at Kay-Bee's 8)

I think allot of people confuse popularity with rarity. Suikoden II & Chrono Trigger are popular and sell for allot on ebay, but they are by no means rare. There are at least 20 or 30 different copies of them listed at any given time.

With the exception of the NWC cart, the 3 rarest games for the NES are the adult "porno" games Peek-A-Boo Poker, Hot Slots and Bubble Bath Babes. (yes, I own all three :p ). Loose carts usually sell in the $400 range, but complete ones have been selling for $800-$900 lately. Have a look:

Correction for that statement, with proof on this website...

Well, this one was pined over by NES collectors everywhere for a long, long, LONG time. This is the very famous 1990 Nintendo World Championship ROM. There were exactly 115 copies of this game released to the general public - 90 grey and 26 gold. While most counts place the number of gold carts at 25, there were the 26 awarded in the Nintendo Power contest, 25 of them being for the second place prize and the 26th being awarded to the grand prize winner along with a trip to Nintendo Headquarters in Washington. The grey carts were given out to the finalists in the contest.

90 gray copies, and 26 gold ones. 116 total. That definitely doesn't change the rarity, though...especially for the elusive gold cart versions.

Yes, there is a ROM link on that page, but the NWC game (and all of the others on the main page) are prototypes. It's what Google gave me, and it's also got the most complete information on the cart. Please don't kill me for this...really, I'm reformed now. :)

Aside from SNATCHER (which I metioned earlier), GUARDIAN HEROES is a very sought-after rare title as well. Mint copies go for $80+ most of the time.

I wish I still had mine. I traded it for a Sega Genesis when I got back from Universal Studios in CA for the tournament. I thought it was a great trade at the time, but obviously not now.

The gave away 90 of the carts at the tournament. The were 3 age groups and 30 people in each group. They also gave away 26 later on in a Nintendo Power contest. These were the gold carts, and the ones from the tournament were grey. We also got a boombox, and I think something else. The actual winner in each group won a Geo Metro, $10,000 and and again something else I don't remember.

I do remember that during the regionals, I won one of those silly U-Force controllers. The thing never did work right. But, I also got a GameBoy and some games, and of course the trip out to Universal for the tournament.

Anyway, the cart is obviously very rare and goes for thousands on eBay. The golds go for more than the greys.

If you just want to play the game, someone did create a ROM for it you can use with one of the many emulators out there. It's a pretty decent challenge game consisting of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and Tetris. You had to get 50 coins in SMB, then complete one lap in Rad Racer, and then just keep playing Tetris until time ran out. I think you had 6 minutes to do everything, although you could change that time on the cart. The point was to get to Tetris as fast as possible since your score was multiplied for that game. If you hit 1,000,000 you were doing great. Most people never got to a million. Thor, the kid who won the teen bracket, got into the millions every time. The kid was a prodigy with Tetris.

Which is why I said "currently sought after" before rare. I was trying to combine the two, popularity and actual rarity. You're right, I should have gone more with popularity/demand than rarity -however some of the titles people have listed manage to combine the two, which was the original purpose of the topic. However, I would like to thank you for sucking the fun from this topic like a vampire.

Say whatever you want, but your statement still implies rariety over demand and other factors,as this phrase shows: most currently sought after RARE video games. By your implication, you see these games cheifly as RARE and then as being sought after.

I was going to offer an apology to you, and explain that it's the constant hammering of all these people saying Suikoden 2 is rare that set me off and sent me into the explaination and examination of the difference between rarity and demand.
Of course, judging by your reaction, that would have fallen on deaf ears, and you'll just continue to whine and pout, and generally act like a little child that decided if people aren't going to play the way that he wants to, then he's just going to take his ball and go home.

:-({|=

I'm still seeking Samba de Amigo with Sega brand maracas.

Guardian Heroes for the Saturn goes for a lot of money. I'm still pissed about that one - a friend of mine bought it from under my nose for $5 at an EB a few years ago. May have been enough reason to keep my Saturn.

Whoa...I didn't expect you to explode...calm down.

I wanted to have a discussion on what games people felt were rare or should I say *hard to find* on a personal level. Suikoden II might not be rare to you, but I sure as hell can't find it anywhere near me (other than eBay) to me, that's rare. I'm sorry, next time I think of doing a topic I'll be sure to qualify the crap out of it so there's no confusion.

Please understand that I never meant people to "play the way I want them to". (which I don't think I ever indicated anyway) I only reacted to your post because you were trying to narrow and reshape what was meant to be a fun, open topic. I'd be way more forgiving of such a post had you provided an example of a game that matches your criteria. Instead you essentially posted a "no, no, no, you're wrong" and that was it. You're entitled to you're opinion, no doubt, but I'm rather sure you can voice it with a little more tact, though calling me a "little child" makes me doubt it just a bit.

Anyways, another game I thought of was Dragon Force for Sega Saturn seems rather rare *ahem* -hard to find.

Yeah, I almost mentioned that because the prices are creeping up. I really loved that game, it was a lot of fun.

Whoa...I didn't expect you to explode...calm down.
Well, considering you changed the demeanor of the converstation by throwing out the first insult, I'm rather surprised to see that you are so shocked by the turn that my posts took. I can't think of very many people who aren't going to see this: However, I would like to thank you for sucking the fun from this topic like a vampire. as anything other than a personal attack. Why should the kid gloves stay on when you've already started tossing out the personal attacks?

I wanted to have a discussion on what games people felt were rare or should I say *hard to find* on a personal level.

Funny, that isn't what this says:

In fact, with the wording you have there, it states rarity above all else.

Suikoden II might not be rare to you, but I sure as hell can't find it anywhere near me (other than eBay) to me, that's rare.

People in the desert can't find water. Does that mean it's rare? Perhaps in the desert, but that doesn't change the fact that around 3/4 of the world is covered of water.
A subjective observation does not define a general rule. Just because you can't find a game doesn't mean it's rare.

I'm sorry, next time I think of doing a topic I'll be sure to qualify the crap out of it so there's no confusion.

Yep, your pleasant disposition shows itself again there. Care for some cheese with that whine?
:-({|=

Please understand that I never meant people to "play the way I want them to". (which I don't think I ever indicated anyway)

If that wasn't your intent, you would have ignored my post and continued on with the thread. Your actions speak differently than your words.

I only reacted to your post because you were trying to narrow and reshape what was meant to be a fun, open topic.
You just got done saying you didn't mena for people to play the way you want them to. You contradict yourself... one sentence after stating something. So did you mispeak or are you just a hypocrite?

I'd be way more forgiving of such a post had you provided an example of a game that matches your criteria.

Considering it was a general contention speaking to the misunderstanding of terms and metrics that others in the thread were using, a specific example wasn't required. If you want one, I'll give you one....
Suikoden 2. Digitpress.com, a site considered to be a dependable reference on matter pertaining to the rarity of games lists Suikoden 2 as a 4 (1 being common and 10 being an ultra rare, one of a kind prototype).
There are over 100+ games on the Playstation alone that are considered more rare than Suikoden 2. Considering that there are so many other games with a rarity greater than it, it is folly to suggest that Suikoden 2 is rare.

Instead you essentially posted a "no, no, no, you're wrong" and that was it.

No, I stated a contention that disagreed with the metrics and standards people were applying. At no point did I ever state no, no, no, RisingZan, you are wrong. There is a difference, and it's not even a subtle one.

You're entitled to you're opinion, no doubt, but I'm rather sure you can voice it with a little more tact, though calling me a "little child" makes me doubt it just a bit.

You are going to lecture me on tact after refering to me as a vampire?
Your hypocracy shines once again. Do as I say, not as I do, eh?
