I don't see how Nintendo can charge higher prices for VC games. It's a ripoff with the prices they have now so I can't imagine the backlash if the prices go up.

I'm done buying VC games too unless it is a classic N64 game that I've never played like OOT or an Arcade quality SNK game, and even then I still have a hard time paying $10. VC games should cost no more than $3 for nes games, $5 for snes, genesis and tg16 games and $8 for N64 and maybe $10 for some newer arcade perfect games like Samurai showdown or something.
I think the current prices are fine, because it costs me about the same prices as I'd pay on the VC to grab the games off Ebay, when you factor in shipping as well. Everyone says the prices are a rip but even if the cheapest NES game on Ebay is like $4 - $5 after shipping, and there is no way real alternative for a lot of people, like myself.

Plus, I'd rather A) use the awesome classic controller, B) only have one system hooked up to my tv that plays all these games, and C) get versions that run in 480p so they don't like shit / look awesome on my television.

I also feel a lot safer buying from Nintendo, then buying from some guy on Ebay where who knows what I'm getting half the time. People always say it's a ripoff but... compared to what? Half the time it's better than Ebay, and where else can you buy old games on a regular basis? Surely not any B&M's around here (thanks Gamestop!). I mean, what exactly are people comparing these prices TO?

But it's when the price starts steadily rising that I have a problem with, when Nintendo feels some games should be more money than other games. I'm a fan of the base pricing myself... I don't like this "minimum" bullshit, and having surprises.

Unfortunately, if they feel like charging 800 points for Super Mario Bros 3, there will be no backlash. Most of us will bitch and complain and then buy it anyways, just like people are doing with TMNT.

I agree with the posters who said it was licensing costs being put onto us. This isn't Mario where all costs go directly to Nintendo, this is something where profit is split. THAT'S why it costs more. I'm sure Nintendo will be interested in the results, but I don't think this will set any precedent other than 'hey, people will buy LICENCED games, even if it costs a little more'.

Sort of like if Tecmo Bowl or whatever came with the NFL licence... you think it's still gonna be 500 Points? Dream on.

It could be licensing in the case of TMNT, but that doesn't explain the 800 points for R-Type (TG-16). There are no licensing issues there.

I honestly have no idea why there have been price increases on a couple games. OoT actually had a premium price in Japan but had no increase over here. If price increases were purely for the upper echelon games, then we should have seen higher prices for SM64, SMW, Zelda:aLttP, etc.

I mean if they have to charge me 100 extra points for the TMNT license, I am down. Now if they charged 800 points for Mario 3, I would buy it ONLY because it is my favorite game ever. If they made any other NES game 800 points, I would not buy it, because thats crazy.

They had to spend 1200 points to get the same game we got for 800 (600 for both).

botticus hit the R-Type nail on the head.

In terms of Japan having some 'premium' prices, I'd imagine it has to do with the user base. Japan, by sheer geography, is much smaller than the US, and, as a result, has less people. I assumed that because of that, they slightly raised prices on the games they KNOW would sell a lot in order to maximize profit. I don't have any numbers to back this up, but I almost guarantee that the 'premium' priced games are still the most downloaded in Japan. (Less people = you charge more) to make the same amount as you would make with (more people = lower amount).

That's the way I always saw it, anyway.

Nintendo really doesn't need to "test the waters" as they already know we're going to pay a 100, maybe even a 200 points markup on games like A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and so on. I'm guessing transferring the licensing cost to us is the most likely reason. Or it could be that 5 dollars just really isn't enough to split three ways.

Even though x-box live is one game a week, I am sure Nintendo knows that they must keep prices somewhat competitive to get people to buy stuff. Since X-box isn't huge in japan, Nintendo can raise prices for it's premium stuff because Sony is not offering anything of it's kind in Japan, but in the Americas Nintendo seems to be taking a more cautions strategy. I do believe that those 100 points for TMNT goes towards the owner of the turtles name because tecmo bowl, kirby and kid icarus was all 500 points.

Wow, I never knew that. Well that does sort of explain it, but then again, when R-Type came to the US, it was as one complete game so that still doesn't quite make sense.

Actually the cost of living in Japan is just higher. The MSRP is higher for new games too

So is Star Fox 64 worth getting? I have to admit I have completely ignored the VC for about a month. I forgot OOT was even released and now, well, not having finished Twilight Princess or Link to The Past I don't see the need in getting that now.

But Star Fox 64 might be a different matter. I'll just say this up front - I enjoyed Star Fox Assault quite a bit (yes, the on-foot missions were less fun, but as a whole I liked the game). I haven't played any other Star Fox games besides Command on the DS. Am I likely to enjoy SF 64 as well? Or are the crappy graphics going to annoy me? ;). (Sorry, but there's something about a space shooter where I'm pickier about graphics more than usual - it is why I think Rogue Leader is one of the best games ever).

You'll love it. At least 10 times better than Assault and Command combined, and the graphics haven't aged horribly either.
No rumble sucks for StarFox 64.

I have another 13 hour day here in the office, so it'll have to wait.... ugh!
Starfox 64 doesn't need rumble to be amazing.Hell i played it without most of the time because rumble sucked, loud, killed batteries.

Get Star Fox 64. You must get this game if you have not played it yet. It has loads of replay value thanks to short mission/story structure and multiple paths, and the game mechanics are flawless.
It might be 4 ways for TMNT, who knows... Konami, Mirage, Nintendo, and Ubi may or may not be involved at this point.
According to copyrights, it's just Konami and Mirage involved.

That's why GCN rumble would be better.

Either way, great game.

haha, I never used the rumble pack once. I don't know why. I could care less for rumble technology. WTF is it good for? Seriously? I don't even notice it in GCN or PS2 games. I guess I never pay attention. Get me in a cockpit or at least a vibrating chair to enjoy these games, but not a gay rumble pack.

Get Star Fox 64. It's an amazing game and you will be spending hours and hours trying to get gold medals in the levels. It has some of the best replay value in any game because you will want to master it.

Alright, I'll get SF 64. I'm sure my boys will like it too. Cheap Wii points cards make it all the easier...

Edit - they are playing it now ;).

Spamming now!?

Ban him already!!!

I don't NEED Star Fox 64. I have Guitar Hero 2, Symphony of the Night, and soon-to-come Paper Mario. But, I love that game so much. It took everything fun about Star Fox and made it better, and gave it a frame rate above 5 fps. ;)

Does this mean we won't see the original SNES Starfox? I don't care, I just thought they would have released that one first. Or maybe the FX chip is harder to emulate.

We will.

Keep in mind.. we are only in what.. month 5 (jeeze, already?!?!) of the Wii's lifespan. We still (by patterns) have about another 5 1/2 years left. At 1-3 games per week, and 5 1/2 years left.. that's a TON of games to be released.

Eventually, they will have to give us everything we want :)

I was just surprised they were releasing them out of order. Certainly some people will buy both out of nostalgia, but people who don't know the games may not buy the "inferior" version after they have the "better" one.

One thing to note, not sure if this is the same for all N64 Games on the Virtual COnsole, as this is my first one, but with Star Fox 64, the Virtual Console does not save your place if you quit back to the menu mid-game. You either have to manually save in the game, or you lose your data.

I added 20 or so games to my list from a while ago ( I have it saved so I didn't waste any time). I thought these would be the VC's biggest sellers and came to the conclusion that Nintendo could release one of these games every two weeks for FIVE years to guarantee a bigger title every other week.

So the Nintendo we has been out, what...24 weeks (total guess)? I marked off 18 titles which has put Nintendo ahead of my expectations by 12 weeks. So I guess they are doing an EXCELLENT job on getting the games out. What do you guys think?

Do you think they are doing perfect, are too fast with their releases, or are they too slow? I would like to add that FOUR of the biggest N64 games have already been released and there is barely 20 N64 games that the majority of people may even look at.

EDIT: I'm a complete loser for making the list, but I wasn't doing anything but watching my roommate play video games before bed so why not. :)

Not a bad list. (You have 'Smash Bros.' and 'Super Smash Bros.' on there. ;) )

And where's Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Puzzle League?!

I think they are moving along pretty well. Already I own more titles for the VC than I do for the XBLA. Granted, it's not really a fair fight, but (usually) having three games a week sure is swell.

I think there are even more games that could easily make that list. (Battletoads and Double Dragon comes to mind.) You never really know how long it will take for a favorite game to hit the system. We may be waiting a couple years for some of those!

Taya, nice list.

However, I don't like we will ever see Banjo Kazooie/Tooie because of Rare/Microsoft. Also, I doubt any previous Wrestling game (like Wrestlemania 2000) will be on here due to liscensing/contracts/etc. Plus I'm pretty sure it's called "WWF Wrestlemania" and I DOUBT they will be changing it lol, I think even No Mercy came out as the last "WWF" game.

Though, you should add the other Mortal Kombats :) I already have UMK3 for the 360..hopefully we can also get MK II (like ps3). Hell, why not add all of them?! MK, MK II, MK3 & UMK3 =)
Especially FREE Wii Points :)
HOW?!
Check out the link in my sig for details!

....I signed up under your referral and just got about 45 points (~6.75 points for you, you're welcome).

I had been meaning to try that site, just never got around to it till tonight. It's not too bad so far. In an hour or two with a credit card, spending about $3 I managed to get 2 Wii points cards. Hopefully they send them to me. Just have to remember to cancel the offers.

But back on topic, STARFOX 64!! WOOOO!!!!
Not a bad list. (You have 'Smash Bros.' and 'Super Smash Bros.' on there. ;) )

Thanks. I added and changed the games accordingly. I have no idea why I made the list in the first place. I guess I've always wanted to make a favorite games list so that was my opportunity. I know I have a lot of games like MK, MK2, UMK3 on there, but if you look on IGN or Gamespot, they are all in the top 50 SNES games and each are a bit different. I would get both MK and UMK3 just because MK is so classic.

BTW, added the two pokemon games, b&dd, and I also added Final fight and streets of rage 2. Let me know if there are any more I can add (or delete).

At 148 you have "Zombies ate my Nightmare", did you mean Zombies ate my Neighbour or are you talking about a different game?
I don't NEED Star Fox 64. I have Guitar Hero 2, Symphony of the Night, and soon-to-come Paper Mario. But, I love that game so much. It took everything fun about Star Fox and made it better, and gave it a frame rate above 5 fps. ;)
Is it really THAT good??

I loved the original Starfox as a kid, but all I ever heard about Starfox 64 was that the multiplayer was good, never anything about the single player.

Is the single player that good??

The single player is amazing. Great soundtrack, excellent replay value. Just get it and you won't be disappointed. I know I'm not, but I grew up loving star fox so maybe it's different.

I don't think the multiplayer is anything great though. It'll be fun for a few minutes, but compared to the multiplayer in Star Fox assault, this is BASIC. I got it for the single player.

It's always a toss up between Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 for me as to which is the best game on the system (*puts on Zelda flame shield*). As far as a single-player experience goes, I think SF64 edges it out in my mind.

If you've never played it, it's well worth your $10. If you have played it, you already know it's worth your $10.

I just need more points. I have 1800 right now and I want both OoT and Starfox 64. The one thing edging out SF64 for me is that I never played through it, and I played through OoT several times when I owned it.

Are you kidding me? Pokemon snap is one of the most awful video game concepts ever, and Puzzle League is vastly inferior to Tetris Attack.

I'm going to toss in a later vouch for Splatterhouse. Its 1D, the American version, and campy as can be, but its still a fun diversion.

I can only hope that Sega starts letting folks release 3rd party Genesis games soon.

I loved the SNES Starfox, but when I had my N64 I didn't care about it at all... I only owned the two Zelda's and maybe 1 or 2 other games.

Thanks to you and Daroga though, I'll probably pick it up.

I downloaded Starfox yesterday. It was my first VC game and I really love it, I never owned it back in the N64 days, I only got to play it at my friend's house.
I've played through it once and I already want to go back and play the levels that I beat, along with the levels I haven't even played it.

I wasn't a big fan of Snap, but I can't see them leaving it off the list, especially because Pokemon is still big today.

As for Puzzle League, maybe I just liked the Pokemon-flavor back then. (I had both Puzzle League and Attack.) Puzzle League had more modes and smarter computer opponents.
Dragon's Curse is still fun.
I had it for the Turbo back in the day, and really enjoyed it. The whole morphing gimmick was done well and kind of ahead of its time. I remember how many secrets it had -- like invisible doorways above other doorways.

I disagree. I really loved the game. Judging a player based on aesthetics was something never done before, and having a keepsake of your photographic accomplishment was great bragging rights. It's a widely respected game among developers, too: I had a lengthy conversation with Deus Ex's Warren Spector about it when I was interviewing him for a feature.
