The Wii VC Games Thread - (5/21 Donkey Kong Country2, Blazing Lazers, Streets Rage 2)

I also LOVED Pokemon snap and still have it. Hopefully they will make another photography game similar to this.

On the question of RARE games and Conker 64, why would we not see it? I know they are Microsoft, but didn't we get Donkey Kong Country? Donkey Kong is a nintendo mascot, but I thought Conker was too. We will see Donkey Kong 64 regardless, right?

So, without reading the several pages StarFox 64 has spawned in this thread, is it any better than the original Nintendo 64 version? Just like Mario Kart 64, I already have the original and would need significant justification to spend $10 for something I already have.

Everything Rare did for Nintendo with Nintendo characters, Nintendo kept. This means all the Donkey Kong's, Nintendo keeps those and does what they want.

Conker, Banjo, Jet Force Gemini, Rare created all of those and when MS bought Rare, they also bought the rights to all those properties, so MS owns all those now. Conker was never a Nintendo mascot. This is why in the port of Diddy Kong Racing for the DS, Banjo and Conker are gone, as MS didn't want Nintendo to use them.

Microsoft and Nintendo would have to work out some sort of deal for them to ever show up on the VC.
I downloaded Starfox yesterday. It was my first VC game and I really love it, I never owned it back in the N64 days, I only got to play it at my friend's house.
I've played through it once and I already want to go back and play the levels that I beat, along with the levels I haven't even played it.
Wow, my boys gave up after not being able to get through the second level yesterday. Then you have to start all over when you die?? That sucks. Also, the control scheme for doing a U-turn is the most asinine thing I have ever seen (pushing both sticks down). Every time my son tries to do that he ends up switching to first person view instead. Maybe it is just the classic controller that is causing problems. This may be one to try on the Wavebird.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to play through this to see what all the fuss is about. I can tell you this, after being used to Star Fox Assault the graphics on this one are painful to look at ;).

Sorry, I'm in a foul mood today. But, really, 95% of this VC stuff is really only for nostalgic purposes, and since I skipped most of these consoles when they were originally out, that is lost on me ;).

They worked well with the C buttons on the N64, but I can imagine that the stick would be awkward. Here's another point where customizable controls would be helpful, I daresay.

Ah, I didn't realize it was different (but I guess N64 controllers only have 1 stick? Dunno, never touched one). Yeah, especially if the controls are remapped, then it needs to be customizable. The controls are explained in game so I assumed that was the way it originally was. I guess they actually changed the code there to accomodate the new controllers (not just the control scheme but the in-game tutorial and control icons as well!). If they can do THAT, they can make it customizable ;).

Edit - Strell, bite me...

(I should add that when the boys gave up on SF 64, they went outside to play and get some real exercise - so it wasn't a bad thing by any means ;))

Ah, ok. That's what I thought. That's a shame.
I was confused because I thought Uniracers was made by Rare, and that was given an ERSB rating recently.

I checked my box, not Rare.

Carry on.

...I love Star Fox 64 btw.

Really enjoying playing this again :)

Classic Controller feels weird, but I'm getting the hang of it!
And Star Fox 64 can be yours FREE when you sign up for Gaminglagoon.com! See sig for further details!

..I need to stop that

Damn, already beat Star Fox.
Well, one path. But still :)

LOVE this game!! REALLY wish they allowed 4 player online with this.. :(

Ahhh, turns out Dragon's Curse is actually Wonder Boy III, the sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land. I've never played it, but I loved WBiML on the Master System.

Wow, I can't play Star Fox on my HDTV, I'm just going to start breaking things. I swear to christ they ramped up the boss difficulty on Star Fox 64, I don't remember the last form of Adross being this difficult. There is seriously no way to beat it, the brain just follows you and there's no way to shoot at it, it just stays on top of you the whole time....

It's fun.

Get it.

I tried it for the first time tonight and got about 5 levels in before getting killed (it was the first landmaster mission and I didn't figure out how to hover over the obstacles until my health was nearly gone ;)). Now, let me get this straight, there is no way to save a game half way through?? You have to play to the last level all in one sitting? I can't find a save feature for the life of me. And people complained Star Fox Assault was short? Looks like you can play through this one in 1-2 hours tops. Sure, it looks like there are the branching paths and all (with Assault did not have). But, still... I'm shocked at the lack of save though.

Yup, that's how the original Star Fox worked.

It's an arcade game, so no saving.

This is sort of confusing. Wouldn't your surprise at the shortness of the game lessen the shock of no save system? Or something?

Just got Dragon's Curse. Pretty fun. Dated, but ahead of it's time. The colors used for thhis game kind of hurt my eyes though. Where do I go after becoming the mouse?

To the left past the hospital. You can climb on the checkered blocks.
I'm waiting for them to release a game on the Virtual Console that I don't have and that I want. :p
For me, that's all of them!

Every Monday is something awesome ;)

Except I'm so stingy with my last 1600 or so points and just don't spend them... I'm waiting for Punch Out, then I'm going to blow the rest on something, but I'm not sure what. There is just TOO many choices =O

I'm just sick of them releasing (mostly Genesis games) that can be found in a compilation pack for around $20.00!

You suck Sega!

While this was a complaint of mine earlier, Sega has released a good deal of non compliation games as well.

So far we've gotten Biohazard Battle, Streets of Rage, and Beyond Oasis, with the promise of Wonderboy in Monster Land coming soon.

I think (and hope) the days of the same games on the compliations are over. I wish they'd release Landstalker already.

As long as this brings us TMNT 2 and 3 eventually, I'm all for it.

I'd also be down for some Turtles in Time action.

lol, Gamespot gave TMNT for NES a 2.7.... wow.

I remember reading TMNT was supposed to be a different game entirely, but when Konami got the license they just made some minor tweaks to a game that was already almost done and that's why we got this game that has fire monsters and chainsaw wielding guys.

Maybe we just told each other that. Really the only thing that explains the complete lack of general TMNTness, outside of the bosses and the Turtle Van.

Peoiple ask all the time about the unrecognizable enemies in this game, but the thing people fail to realize is that the first TMNT game on NES is based off the comics, not the TV show, and that's where most of the characters are from.

There is your answer fishbulb.

Was it some sort of mish-mash? I thought the turtles in the comics all had the same color headband and didn't eat pizza.

Oooh... that's why the tutles on the NES cover had the same colors. One of the mysteries of my childhood is solved.

The turtles fought weird guys on fire and dudes with chainsaws and floating eyeball things in the comics?

I don't remember that happening.

And it's got Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Technodrome in it, so it's not entirely based off the comics.

I like the first TMNT game for NES. However, I'm pretty sure it's not based on the comics. Typically the Konami games borrowed from the old toon and the Archie comics, but not from the original comics. As for this one, I really don't know where those enemies came from...

It looks like we might see the first import VC game some time in April.
I came across this when looking at video game news on N4G.com, TG16 VC releases in April. The four games are as follows:

Dragon's Curse (April 2nd, Hudson Soft)
Shockman (April, Huson Soft)
Battle Lode Runner (April, Hudson Soft)
Bonk's Revenge (April, Hudson Soft)
Bravoman (April, Hudson Soft)

Battle Lode Runner is Japanese only, is this a sign that the Virtual Console is finally getting foreign games? Even though it's not a special game or anything, it's definitely a good step forward to seeing future Japanese releases and hopefully translations. It would make sense that they chose Battle Lode Runner since it's a Hudson classic and is English friendly.

It's listed on the official Virtual Console page too, but not the official Nintendo site yet.
http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=2810.0

Does anyone know what is different between Battle Lode Runner and the "regular" Lode Runner version that appeared on many platforms (including computers and MSX)? I couldn't find any reviews or descriptions of the game.

What are some of the best websites to get news on potential upcoming VC games? Games keep popping into my head that I wish were coming, so it'd be nice to have a place to check on stuff like that. Thanks..

They were different and very mature compared to what the cartoon ended up being, but that game is just an acid trip.

Drugs are bad for you.

I think I said this already, but Streets of Rage was included on Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1, so it has been in a compilation.

Any clue as to what we're getting tommorow? I got some cash to burn, so I'm hoping something good comes out. I'd be all over Super Mario RPG, Castlevania Bloodlines (or even Rondo of Blood), Super Metroid or Super Mario 3
I call tomorrow to be..

Zelda II
Bonk's Revenge
Virtua Fighter 2

:D
I think Punch Out should rear it's head soon too since it was released in Europe.

More Castlevania games the better.

It'd be nice if they gave us Super Mario RPG, to coincide with the release of Super Paper Mario.
That would be pretty disapointing :(
Never said "This is what I want!"

Just taking what's been rumored for a while now and just putting some together.

Although, last week I jokingly said about Star Fox and we got it Monday :) (Which BTW, people still have not thanked ME yet!)

True. Or better yet. Paper Mario for the 64?
But then again, both games (Mario RPG, Paper Mario) are both pretty long...and much rather us play Super Paper Mario.. But then, It really doesn't matter since they will get money either way LOL
