The Wii VC Thread - 12/31/07: Bubble Bobble, Light Crusader, Top Hunter

Ya know, I wonder if Pokemon Snap will ever make it on here. I really enjoyed that game A LOT...and after I've been playing Pearl & Battle Revolution A LOT lately (..forgot how GOOD and ADDICTING Pokemon can be...)..I remembered this game and now I have a desire to play it.

Pokemon sells, and it's the only OTHER game besides Pokemon Stadium that can appear on the VC. It'd be kinda pointless to put Stadium on there..since we can't use our Gameboy Colors.

C'mon..surprises us today Nintendo! We haven't been surprised in a while! (Paper Mario doesn't count since we were expecting it lol)

I may pick up Paper Mario if today's releases are lackluster. Super Metroid is enticing.

Let's try for some reverse psychology: I sure hope Nintendo doesn't do something stupid and release Super Mario RPG today. That just wouldn't make any sense.
I was playing Transformers the other day and was totally craving for some Blast Corps.

A quick tip for those with home theater systems, when playing VC titles set put your receiver to "All Channel Stereo" or the equivalent setting. Onkyo's say "All Ch ST" but other brands might call it something different. I noticed when playing F-Zero X today that the Wii isn't outputting to the other channels in Pro Logic II mode so it makes a huge difference. And of course don't forget to go back to PLII when playing your Wii titles and compatible GC titles.

That could be useful to add to the Wii FAQ, if it isn't already in there.
You mean to put it in Stereo mode? As that's what I do, instead of having it split between Left/Right, Back Left/Back Right, Center. I make it so it's just Left/Right and the Subwoofer.

WOW EXTREME YAWN TODAY!

July 30, 2007

The Virtual Console™ is like a box of chocolates: You never know which games have the tasty caramel filling and which ones have that pink-green crème inside. Whatever your preference, we've got you covered with this weeks release of Star Soldier, Dynamite Headdy and Drop Off. Read on and savor the delicious centers of these classic treats.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Star Soldier (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): The standard for vertically scrolling shooters, Star Soldier is the original game that spawned all of the titles in the long-running Soldier series. Go inside a floating space station inhabited by a giant computer known as Starbrain. Your mission: to stop Starbrain's galactic invasion by piloting Caesar, a new, compact space fighter through 16 deadly stages. Collect power capsules to increase three different attributes of your ship: firepower, movement speed and defensive shields. Blast wave after wave of approaching enemies or use the innovative Trap Zone feature to fly beneath a land mass and avoid incoming fire. Conquer each stage to make your way to the final confrontation with Starbrain.

Dynamite Headdy™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): Headdy, a toy with a detachable head, arrives in North Town to find that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is causing serious problems. Dark Demon is gathering up all the puppets in town and turning some into his own evil minions, while eliminating the rest of the puppets that aren't good enough to join his legions. Headdy is captured and is targeted for the incinerator, but escapes in the nick of time. Now he's got to save the town. To do so, Headdy has to take on all manner of bad guys and even has to contend with his lifelong nemesis, Trouble Bruin the bear. Can Headdy overcome all his foes and take down Dark Demon?

Drop Off (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Brave five rounds of haunting, nightmarish dreams in this take on the classic arcade puzzler. To save his dearly beloved from the malicious demon that controls her dreams and holds her captive, our brave hero plunges himself into the nightmare to vanquish this evil foe. Deftly use the arrow items and control the angle of the ball to shatter the blocks that descend from the top of the screen. Set your sights on the joints holding the blocks together and knock off multiple blocks in one exhilarating blow. As you drop more and more blocks, their shapes will change, allowing you to earn bonus points. You must use your concentration and reflexes to defeat the demon and save your beloved.

Dynamite Headdy was pretty sweet from what I can remember--wasn't that a Treasure game?

Edit: It was a Treasure game, and it was one of the best games on Genesis. I may have to pick this one up today.

Star Soldier NES!? Why get that when you can get SUPER Star Soldier for TG16 at a mere 100 points more? Drop Off looks like extreme Brickout for those enthuisiasts. And Dynamite Headdy is the only hidden gem here. Fun platformer, I like it a lot better than Ristar. Its one of the games I actively pursued when I rebuilt my Genesis collection a couple years ago. Its no ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURE, but still a good game.

No, what happens is in PL II mode and VC games, the Wii only outputs to the L/R and sub. So you don't need to put it in Stereo mode as it'll sorta already do it for you.

All Channel Stereo does exactly what is sounds like, still Stereo sound but coming from all the channels. This way you take advantage of all your speakers with VC games instead of just the L/R/Sub. I'm anal about this because when I'm playing a game or watching TV/movie and I want all my speakers going. I didn't set up surround sound for nothing ;)

Ah, I see. My receiver doesn't have an option for anything like that.

OOOOOOOOOOH!! I know this game now! (Dynamite Headdy) I believe I rented this way back in the day and liked it..but just never got around to actually getting it!

I remember attacking with your head!! LMAO...I remembered how the game design, to me, reminded me of Sonic.

Nada for me....Let's hope Super Metroid is out the day before Metroid Corruption hits stores.

*Waiting for Kirin's "WHAT! NO SUPER MARIO RPG!"*, lol

I vaguely remember Dynamite Heady. I do remember enjoying it as a kid. I can't tell if it holds up today though. Maybe I'll give it a download when I'm bored.

Ah Dynamite Headdy, what a surprise. I actually really liked that game back in the day, it just had something to it. I might pick it up sometime down the road but that is until there is no good games out that I need to spend my money on, lol.

I picked up Paper Mario today. Wow, very nice game! Well worth the 1000 points! (yes Im 2 weeks behind, but oh well) I never played this game before either (Just TTYD and SPM) and I'm glad that I'm loving it!

Dynamite Headdy was one of those good "Kirby-esque" type of games. You can change heads that do different things. From what I remember it has really weird bosses. I mean REALLY weird. Sort of like PARODIUS for SNES.

I used to enjoy it back in the day.

Anyone know how long (on avg, of course) Paper Mario is? TTYD took me i think 40-50ish hours (aaahh good times)..where SPM was about 20-23?

So, did anyone else pick these games (or any games) up today? If so: What? :)

Dynamite Heady was, IMO, one of the hardest games ever created. Getting the secret boss battle AFTER the final boss battle was utter bullshit. Still something I can not achieve. Then again, this IS Treasure, so that explains the difficulty...
WHERE THE fuck IS PRO WRESTLING FOR NES!!!!!!!
-Goatman
Yeah, we need some King Slender up in this bitch.

Based on where I am now in the game, I'd say it's anywhere around 20-25 hours long.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this.. but this past Tuesday--according to the Wiki..Japan got Wave Race 64.

Also, today Europe got Dynamite Headdy, Shining Force, Drop Off, Shinobi III:Return of the Ninja Master.

Did anyone else notice that Europe got Kirby's Avalanche last week?? ..Kirby games FTW

I really hate tooting my own horn, but I find out what games are rated before they are posted. So, I know what times they are rated, and so I report it to other sites accordingly (maybe you've seen my work?)

Anyway, I'm thinking about bringing my very important Virtual Console Block Thread to CAG. I just wonder if it would get floated or something like that. I mean, it is pretty extensive, and I've worked on it for months.

... the ESRB lists on its site what games are rated, but if you think you have anything in addition that... by all means.

It's not what you think. The Block Thread is just the number of blocks for each game in a nice, clean little database to help people determine how many blocks they need to delete in order to download the game when their Wii is full of either channels or memory.
I know the ESRB lists their games on their site, but I'm usually the first one to report on it anywhere. I almost always know when the ratings go up.

what the fuck is a block?! Is this the original Xbox? Why not go by MBs Nintendo?

sorry, carry on. :)
sooo anyone know what games will come out tomorrow
Last I heard, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario 3.
Ok, kidding.

You forgot the weekly T16 shooter.

Last I heard:
- TMNT II
- Metroid
- Galaga 90

The first two do make sense if you do your research about specific dates.

God I really wanna play Pokemon Snap again.

It'll probably happen eventually..but still.

I wonder if we'll get Wave Race 64 today, but who knows. Kinda hope nothing TOO good..I don't want to be distracted and play something else. I want to finish Paper Mario :)

I was right! Wave Race 64!
KingBroly was right with Galaga 90.

I think I remember Adventures of Lolo..I think it was good.

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Aug. 6, 2007

What makes a game truly classic? Is it unforgettable graphics or timeless characters? Is it crisp realism or mesmerizing fantasy realms? The answer, of course, is all of the above, and this week's additions to the Wii Shop Channel cover the whole gamut. From wild water sports to heroic puzzling to intergalactic space battles, these newly available titles are proven favorites you'll learn to love all over again on your Wii™.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Wave Race® 64 (Nintendo® 64, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Take to the waves on your own personal watercraft and experience some of the best water effects in video game history. Choose one of four characters, each with his/her own unique abilities and style, and master the game's excellent controls. Make your way through nine courses, each with its own challenges. If the ramps, mines and hairpin turns aren't enough, you'll also have to deal with varying weather conditions that can make the water choppy or cover the course with fog. And if you ever feel like taking a break from racing, then try out Stunt Mode to polish your skills by pulling off handstands, rolls and more. Get good enough and you might even be able to ride a dolphin-just don't get seasick.

ADVENTURES OF LOLO™ (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): This was the first game in the Eggerland puzzle series to be released in North America. After the love of his life, Lala, is kidnapped by the Great Devil and taken to a haunted castle, our hero Lolo sets out to rescue her. The journey is perilous because the Great Devil's fortress is guarded by a massive army. But Lolo has a few tricks up his sleeve, including a Magic Shot that turns enemies into eggs and an Emerald Framer that shields him from attacks. Combining clever environmental puzzles with tricky enemies and an engaging style, ADVENTURES OF LOLO is a true classic.

GALAGA™ '90 (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): This is an updated version of the classic arcade shooter Galaga. Set in the vast reaches of space, you will fight your way through all 29 rounds to reach the enemies' stronghold on Planet Galaga. Game levels consist of a few rounds with changing enemies and backgrounds. To top it off, the nostalgic "Galactic Dancing" lives on to mark the end of each level. With the new addition of dimensions, you can choose your attack route. Collect capsules and open dimension warps at branch sections to take on even tougher enemies. GALAGA '90's inclusion of the triple fighter, scrolling backgrounds, boss Galaga and even new system effects make it nothing less than a masterpiece.

Great update--Lolo was a fantastic game and Galaga '90 ('88) is my favorite arcade game.

Never played Wave Race 64--I played the Gamecube version and was entirely unimpressed.

Wave Race 64 wasn't bad, but if I recall it was a launch game (or damn near close). I'm not sure how well it'll hold up.
Wave Race might be worth the points, though!!
Think of it in terms of cash. Ten bucks for Wave Race is a ripoff. Not worth it at all.

I never liked Wave Race or its' sequel anyway. I thought the controls were iffy. You couldn't turn well, and you couldn't see directly in front of you either. Lolo is worth it because almost ALL great NES games were obscure, and this one is great. Galaga...it's prettier than the NES one, and it's only a buck more. But you probably have 20 different versions of Galaga already.

Darn right--where's my Little Nemo: The Dream Master? Is that even possible on VC because of the rights issue?

Good updates 3 of the last 4 weeks? I am pretty impressed. Lolo is an awesome game. Wave Race is fun (probably not worth $10 but atleast its a decent 64 game). I don't know anything about Galaga though.
Hey, did anyone catch the Easter Egg in Wave Race? Apparently, Nintendo put DS and Wii ads in the game. Here's a link:

If they're actually going to be changing the games, add some online functionality to them while they're at it!
I'd buy these suckers in an instant.

That's like comparing getting a car repainted versus adding a jet engine to it.

Thus giving it the ability to travel through time.
