WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

July 9, 2007

Think you've got what it takes to be a hero? Prove it with these three heroic games, available this week on the Wii Shop Channel. Whether you're rescuing Mario's dinosaur pal from an eggshell or battling to protect the planet from evil invaders, the future is in your hands.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Mach Rider® (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): It's the year 2112. Earth has been invaded by the forces of evil. Battle the invaders as you race from sector to sector on your motorcycle, searching for survivors. Feel the incredible sense of speed as you zip past evil Quadrunners and zigzag between treacherous rocks, oil spills and other obstacles on the course. For a different challenge, create your own course in Design Mode, using the various twists, turns and straightaways the game has to offer. Remember, you are Earth's only hope—you are Mach Rider.

Yoshi® (NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Yoshi is an action/puzzle game starring Mario's dinosaur buddy, Yoshi™, who has been imprisoned in an egg. Now it's raining Goombas, Bloopers and Boo Buddies, and you have to help Mario™ stop the airborne invasion. As the critters fall, catch them on trays. Stack two of a kind and they both disappear, or capture the whole bunch in between eggshells. When the eggshells match, out hatches Yoshi and up goes your score. The action heats up as the characters fall faster and faster. To save the day, switch and shuffle, and don't let your piles get too high.

Air "Zonk" (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Cartoon Violence, 600 Wii Points): Air "Zonk" is a spin-off of the popular Bonk's Adventure series. This side-scrolling shooter retains the same cartoonish style of Bonk but is set in a cyberpunk future. The powered-up "Zonk" gathers his friends to form Team Cool, and they set out to stop King Drool's plan to conquer the world. Choose from three levels of difficulty and three Friend Modes. Shoot King Drool's cyber-robots and avoid their attacks while collecting the Air Bones to unleash a variety of unique attacks. Combine with a friend to create an invincible hybrid form or blast enemies with a charged attack. Air "Zonk" is filled with humor, made evident by the wacky theme song that plays when you post a huge score or when your game is over.

"Team Cool"

What a great name. Is this title any good? I thought the Bonk games were fun, but stayed away from this one during my TG16 days, not being sure if it was related or not.

I think I remember liking Yoshi. Air Zonk seems cool, but not $6 trying it cool.
I need breakfast. I know Ive been really great at updating the OP nice & early for everyone, but I am starving. I came here to post the "Wii-kly update" but EXStrike got it for me (thanks, btw!).

OP will be update soon, though :)

According to Kotaku, Japan got Paper Mario on VC this week, hopefully that means the US will be getting it soon. It's been featured on the VC page of the Nintendo Power as well.

Is that NES game that was released today any good ?

Hmm...Air Zonk is ok but I think I'll pass. After playing through Ninja Gaiden (NES) I am really looking forward to the sequels now.

Some of you are too quick to say "Oh another crappy Monday" if there isn't a Mario or Zelda or Star Fox etc release. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of these classic titles by overlooking them. The whole reason of the VC is not just nostalgia but for you to discover these hidden gems you were not fortunate to play because you didn't have x system or could afford y game as a kid during the classic era. Yes theres roms but theres certainly something about sitting down and playing on your TV the way it was meant to. I would have never played games like Beyond Oasis or Wonderboy without the recommendation of CAGs. So once in awhile look at a title and give it a glance on youtube real quick before just saying, "yea thats crap" to a title you haven't even heard of.

This week I really really recommend Air Zonk. If you buy one TG16 schmup, make it Air Zonk. Variety in characters, colorful and nicely animated characters, this game has a lot of charm vs the 12 schmups with a standard triangle ship moving upward. Take a chance on it, I know a lot of you guys have free points out there too.

Oh snap! You are Mach Rider! Loved it as a child, love it still. However, no purchase for me this week. Decent lineup though.

OP updated. Sorry for the delay, guys :)
(Damn Pokemon has ABSORBED me!!)

Also, I will be on vacation next week. If a mod wants to update it next week then of course they are more then welcome. If not, I will do a double update on the following Monday since I will only be gone from this Saturday and I'll be home the following Saturday! (MMMMM THE CARRIBEAN!!!)

Hopefully SOME people read this, so when the "OMG ITS TUESDAY AND THE OP ISN'T UPDATED!! ::bolt 3::" posts come..someone can say "Hey..shhhh..he's on vacation. Chill out! "

i still haven't bought Mario 2, and I want to..but.. ::shrugs:: on when.

Now I remember why I enjoyed Air Zonk so much. Since you pick a partner, when you get enough powerups you combine with the partner and become a new ship. Theres a ton of variety in the game. Great sprites and familiar faces from the Bonk games. Schmup fans, get it now!

The wait for Kirby's Dream Course is *killing* me, but at least I picked up Yoshi and Air Zonk this week. Paper Mario be damned, I want some Kirby-themed mini-golf action!

Arggg! They got Paper Mario are we didn't! BLAST!

I'll buy "Air Zonk" since I've never played it, and it looks entertaining. I'm a little disappointed Nintendo didn't give us something really awesome, say... Paper Mario or SMRPG, as a little "before E3 gift" or something.

Whatever.

That's a lousy video of Mach Rider, the guy never gets off of 1st gear. It gets crazy at high speeds, and is a really good pick up and play game.

Another lousy week. I keep hanging in there for some great games but my Wii points are just sitting gathering electronic dust.

Being on sale for $19 isn't much since you pay tax. If you use your credit card through your Wii its $20 without tax. Not much of a difference either way.

You could just join Prizerebel ;)

26 minutes of Yoshi...
So what is the cheapest way to get Wii Points? I saw a card of 2000 for sale at freddy's for $19.
I picked up a whole bunch at Best Buy over the last few months using the GamePro "$5-off any accessory" coupon, bringing them down to $15 each. I needed a big stockpile of points before my move to Japan in a few weeks.
The cheapest way is to buy them on the Shopping channel because they don't tax on microtransactions.
Unfortunately, that is not correct. They do charge sales tax if you buy the points via the shop. I can personally confirm as thats how I have bought all of my points. Its quick and easy, but I'm paying the Indiana 6% too.

I guess its different per region or state because I was never charged tax. Though the last time I bought points was back in March or so.

There's like 12 or 15 states (maybe more?) that Nintendo charges tax for. MA's one of them, as I had tax when I bought Wii Points online (for instant MK64 purchasing) and when I ordered DS cases from their store.

AU got Paper Mario for VC yesterday.
You know what that means......

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR NES MONDAY!
Fist_of_the_North_Star_NES_ScreenShot2.jpg
lolz

I dunno.

Super Mario RPG was featured in the most recent Nintendo Power as the blast from the past, so to speak. Maybe that is hinting at a possible VC release.

I really hope Paper Mario comes Monday!

Also, I am going away tomorrow morning and I won't be back until the following Saturday. I'll either update sometime Sunday or I might just wait until NEXT Monday to update with all the updates

I'll put that little bit in the OP just so people don't get all crazy about the OP not being updated next week.. LOL

Punta Cana, FTW!!!
Have a nice week everyone!!
What's the next game to bitch about if Paper Mario shows up tomorrow? SMRPG for the next two years?
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll be bitching about SMRPG not being on the VC no matter what comes out (unless, of course, it's SMRPG).

I simply must have that gem on my Wii.

Oh, and I'll also bitch about Kirby's Dream Course, for Kirin Lemon.

I'm going to guess we'll get Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (NES), Last Alert (TG-16), and ATP Tour (Genesis). This would go along with the theme of Nintendo releasing random crap games week after week.

I'm thinking Chrono Trigger. or Earthbound. That's just me though...

I own both titles on my SNES, but it seems to be so hard to turn on these days! I have to turn it on and off 50 times to get it to work. It's sad to see my old games die...
Oh, and I'll also bitch about Kirby's Dream Course, for Kirin Lemon.
You spoil me. You hear that, Nintendo?! There are *two* of us now!!

Oh, and EarthBound just received an ESRB rating recently, so add that to my list of demands as well. :D

Joystiq's saying Paper Mario, Balloon Fight and Silent Debuggers this week, although there's nothing up on Nintendo's press site as far as I can tell.
