Let's take the discussion in a slightly different direction.

On the Wii Shop channel, if you click on the "New Genre: Imports!" bulletin, it specifically says something along the lines of "these games might have odd characters, but never enough such that you won't be able to enjoy the game!"

That sounds like to me "We're unwilling to do major translations." Which is like saying "Even if we found a way to let you have Snatcher, only Japan gets it, since we're not going to do the work on it."

That is the most interesting thing I've read since this morning.
Well, I would imagine the work would fall on the original developer/publisher. I don't think Treehouse would be translating Snatcher.

Now that argument would work better for Mother 3, but shut up.
yes, and a copy of Rosetta software. And if you can read Japanese, congratulations. Here's some Pocky for you.
That was an unnecessarily hostile post.
And delete your saves as well?
No. Channels and saves are not the same thing.

I just ran a test. Booted up Mario 1, got to 1-2, Wii menued out to save it. Then I deleted the Mario 1 channel and checked to see that the Mario 1 save was still there. It was. I turned off the system (hard power off), turned it back on and then redownloaded Mario 1. Started it up and it picked up where I had saved.

Delete games if you need room :)

OH MAH GAWD SIN & PUNISHMENT

will buy immediately.

I wonder if they were trying to say something about SMB2j by releasing "Sin & Punishment" alongside it ;)

That game is an absolute mess. I made it through all but a few levels on SMB All Stars and it's not an experience I'd like to repeat.

Buying both once I get off work!

However, I am disappointed on how Nintendo does not want to release Super Mario All-Stars (and hope to put some enhancements like voices and features from the GBA versions) to the VC. I would pay at least a premium for it.

I thought that Picross would come out with these two titles. Oh well, its just nice to finally be able to play Sin and Punishment.

I've played Sin and Punishment and I like it, but there doesn't seem to be a control scheme that works well with the game. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have both a classic controller and a wavebird.

I'm hoping they release it too, hopefully they just want to get all of the games on All-Stars out before they release it so they can get people to double dip.

With the wavebird the best I could do is Control 1, and just got used to using Y and X as strafe. This game would map perfectly to the wiimote and nunchuck.

I downloaded both, wooha.

On a side note, all this talk about Lost Levels ONLY being on Super Mario All-Stars has me a bit confused...

Am I the ONLY one who played Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on Gameboy Color?

You could unlock the original version of Lost Levels (retitled "Super Mario Bros. For Super Players") after getting 300,000 points in SMB.

I'm surprised no one else remembers.

It's been mentioned! But what we are saying this has never been released by itself.

Dammit.

I was sitting there last night, telling myself that I was done buying VC games for a while.

And, what, Nintendo? You do this to me?

You bastards.

I am weak.

I grabbed Sin and Punishment. I played it on a N64 emulator a year or two ago so it was a no brainer picking it up. It almost seems like a game that would have been released on the playstation. It looks pretty sweet on the Wii with the cleanup the emulator provides. I dig the gameplay and it has an original vibe too it. It almost reminds me of Silent Bomber...not in gameplay (at all) but uniqueness. I also finally picked up Super Metroid. I'd pick up Super Mario Bros. 2 but I have the GBA import.

Heh, yea good point...I did like it back in the day when they were quiet, heh.

Oh boy, I can't even pass the first level of the Lost Levels. No wonder why Nintendo didn't want it released over here.

I got 3 days off after today so I'm going to try to finish that game...

i'm loving the hell out of lost levels. i think platforming is my favorite genre in gaming and there is so little of it now days. this game has a perfect level of difficulty. it definitly beatable but you've got to put your time in.

since i've only played it on all stars i've never seen the original graphics. it cracks me up the minor upgrades they've put in from the original super mario bros. bricks and falling platforms for instance have a slightly different look. very poorly drawn bushes and plant life in the back ground. clouds with smiley faces. so good.

but i wish this genre was more popular. it's a shame.

Yeah, it seems like this is the Mario game where Nintendo pretty much said "If it's in the background, it gets eyes. Period."

As for the difficulty, this game is pulling out the all the birth certificates, showing me the family trees and explaining to me exactly who my daddy is.

I have already sworn at the TV screen. Many times.

I dont remember the Lost Levels on Mario All Stars really being that hard (except it took me forever to beat the 2nd to last castle). Is the NES version harder?

well put. for me it's mosly yelling NO, throwing the controller down, hands in hair. then i try again. my goal is to beat all 8 worlds without continueing. i've done this before but it was a long time ago.

it's certainly no harder. and if you use the warps, it won't take too long to master the levels. especially since mario all stars allows infiinite continues. but if you make your way through all 8 worlds, you'll come across some very very difficult and frusterating levels.

I don't know how many times I threw my NES controller playing Mario. I think doing the same to the Wii remote would be a bad thing.

Mario All Stars let you continue at 3-3 if you got to 3-3. This version? It's back to 3-1 for you.

i forgot about that. that made it too easy in my opinion on all stars. i'm glad that they didn't do that for the vc.

There you go. I forgot about that. I have All-Stars still, but haven't played it in years. Did they do the same thing for SMB 1 2 & 3? I think so.

I finally bought my first VC game, and damn, it wasn't cheap. I'm loving Sin and Punishment, great unique style/gameplay. I hope lots of people buy this title and encourage Nintendo to localize more games to the US.

Played S&P for about two hours today. Game kicks ass, and kicks my ass (on easy :whistle2:(). Really tough to find a satisfactory control method, but I settled on shoot with L, strafe and jump with D-pad, and aim with the stick.

I think I got to the last boss, but I have no idea how I will ever beat it. Luckily I get enough points to earn extra continues every time I die.

The story in S&P makes no fucking sense. No fucking sense.

It's like Akira and Evangelion had a baby, slapped it around a few times, fed it nothing but fishheads, and sent it to school.

SEE? YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS EITHER.

The story might make some sense, if it actually had a beginning. It's like they dropped you in the middle of some epic save-the-world situation, without explaining the backstory. But that said, it still wouldn't make any sense unless you ignored half the things that go on.

But yeah, worth a buy. Hell, I don't even like Gunstar, and I like this game.

This past week's releases:

Japan
Esper Dream - NES 600 Points
Bare Knuckle 3 aka Steets of Rage 3 - GEN 600 Points
Genpei Toumaden - TG16 600 Points

In Europe
4 games, ALL Genesis and ALL 800 points (Why do they have a habbit of this?)

Streets of Rage 3
Golden Axe 3
Super Thunder Blade
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole

So yeah, we probably had the best update this week. But then again, we were last to get Lost Levels and Sin & Punishment.
I gotta check the list, I don't believe we have Golden Axe 3..and I think Japan has it already so this is a good indication that we might be getting Golden Axe 3 soon. But then, they got Vegas Stakes like 4+ weeks ago..

Oh well. We'll see if any VC Monday news is leaked for the weekend.

The carrier level in S&P alone makes the game worth buying.

I'm pretty sure I could play that level forever.

Some site I ran across said "this shouldn't be possible on the N64." Kind of reminds me of Gunstar Heroes - I didn't think the Genesis could pull it off.

S&P really needs a sequel, once I finally came to terms with the balls-crazy story, and realized it doesn't have a true end.

Hell, they could make it Wiiware for all I care. I'd get it.

So, I want to be lazy and not have to look myself.

What kind of game (genre) is S&P? All this praise is making me want to go grab a points card!

Essentially it's a rail shooter, like Star Fox. But you aren't flying around, you're using a human character that can dash to the left/right and double jump.

In terms of other Treasure games, there's no upgrades/different weapons to grab.

Basically you just shoot huge onslaughts of enemies trying to rack up long chains, and can grab additional bonus/life/time pickups. There is a time limit per area, kind of like Time Crisis. However, if it gets to 0, you don't die - your life starts to decrease.

If enemies get in close, you can slash them with a sword. There's also a battle or two where you have to effectively sword fight someone.

The majority of the stages auto-scroll, and then stop at predetermined points to let you kill enemies/minibosses/etc. A few levels are side scrollers in the sense that you can better control when you move forward/backward.

It has an insane story, some ...passable-at-best voice acting, and the cutscenes really show how poorly underpowered the N64 was.

But when the game is in motion, it still looks incredible and is very fluid.

Someone called it Gunstar in 3D, and that's somewhat accurate.

Here's a video:

Great, great game for the action/twitch fan, which admittedly is more likely if you are more owd skoo.

Edit: Oh yea, Botticus reminds me. There's certain projectiles you can slash with your sword and direct them back at enemies. I didn't realize I could do it at first, but when you learn you can, you can really put it to your advantage.

Also, I really wanna know if someone can perfect the "protect Earth" thing. I imagine it is possible, but damn.

I didn't realize that's what you had to do to beat the Ruffian Wall of Blob boss fight. When I figured it out, it was definitely an "Ohhhhhhh...." moment.

Do you guys get green sparkly artiftacts at the very edges in the black space when playing this game on an HDTV in 4:3 (since you can see all the overscan)?

Cause if not, I will cry.

I gotta stop reading "S&P" as Salt & Pepper, this is driving me bat shit.

But Sin & Punishment is a good game. Salt & Pepper make good seasonings.

Those videos and that description make me think I will enjoy the game.

Thanks for the help, guys. Gotta get a points card now!

Oh fuck! I LOVED Eternal Champions!! Jetta "Pig!!" and the Warlock guy would point his staff and go "SIMPLETON!!!".. Ohhhhhh good TIMES.

I forgot to mention this.. this is actually big news.. lol

Along with the 4 Sega Gen games that came out today in Europe, they also got their first Neo Geo game at 900 points. They got Fatal Fury.

http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/10/05/vc-friday-hello-there-neo-geo/

Glad to see new systems debuting on the VC very soon (for us!)

Take it with a grain of salt, but the Virtual Console Wiki page lists the following games as being released on October 8th.

Fatal Fury: King Of Fighters (NeoGeo)
Art Of Fighting (NeoGeo)
World Heroes (NeoGeo)
