Tonight Show Shakeup Leno Back In
Every single one of my childhood dreams could be combined and flushed down the toilet if I was written a check for $33 million. Exactly. Plus, The Tonight Show was only a big deal because of Johnny Carson. Conan didn't take over Carson's The Tonight Show; he took over Leno's The Tonight Show which wasn't THAT big a deal anymore. Conan got a good deal from NBC and I am sure he will have success when he moves to another network.

But you're not Conan O'brien who hasn't had to worry about money in a decade or two. He was already rich from 16 years of the Late Night show, 7 months on this show, probably has done some endorsement deals over the years etc.

For you or me, taking the money is a big lure. For someone already independently wealthy, it's not so important and doesn't outweigh losing his dream, moving his family, his staff and their families from NY to LA just for the show etc. etc.

And hell, you don't need near that kind of money to not worry about bouncing a rent check etc. Money's never been a primary concern, else I wouldn't have taken an academic job when I could have easily made $10-20K a year more working in the private sector. As long as I can pay all my bills without worry and have some left over to save up and spend on leisure activities I'd rather do something I love than take a big check.

So I definitely feel bad for Conan. Money hasn't been a concern for him for a long time, and he's having his dream taken away from him after moving cross country for it. I especially feel for him on that one, as LA is easily my least favorite big city that I've visited. Hopefully his new show on Fox or wherever will be back in NY (assuming he wants to move back).

The money is secondary. Remember, 5 years ago when the Leno/Conan deal was made, the Tonight Show was brought up because his contract was up and Conan could've gotten a better monetary deal from another network. They dangled the Tonight Show in front of him, which seems to be the only reason he stayed. If he had cared about money, the man easily could've bolted 5 years ago for a higher salary.

Yep, great point. He was already financially secure and cared more about his dream of hosting The Tonight Show.

to be fair, Conan was the one who pushed for the Tonight Show or he wasn't gonna resign in 2004... NBC still botched this one bigtime.

In the end, I just hope no one watches Leno, the guy has finally been exposed as the hack he is, at least in the mainstream media. People clued in had already known for a long time.

Yeah, they just really dropped the ball on that one. If they were that committed to Leno, they should have just let Conan leave in 2004. You can't make a deal and then back out on it so soon after the change takes place. I hope they take a big financial/ratings hit over this. They probably will short term, but Leno will probably get his audience built back up after a year or so.

so what will be shown on Monday tonight? Repeats of the Tonight Show with Conan or Repeats of the Tonight Show with Jay in order to get the audience use to Jay again for the tonight show? I am thinking repeats of the show with Jay because after Friday I think NBC doesn't want to reminded of this mess.

Drama of the unfunny late-night comedians. Who cares.

The only good late-night show is Craig Ferguson, which is the best late-night show ever, because Craig Ferguson fuckin owns.

Norm Mcdonald? I thought he was dead. And i mean that in a "I haven't seen him in ages so he must be dead" kind of way.

Once I begin to like the guy, he has to say something that makes me want to slap myself...

I like both Conan and Letterman, but I agree that Craig Ferguson is the best late-night host. He's hilarious. Conan's not far behind, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Craig Ferguson.

A ton of people, if recent viewing habits are any indication. Conan being finished after tonight is going to hurt all of them.

I laughed harder at that than anything Craig Ferguson's ever said.

Nah. He's gone back to doing standup-- you should see one of his shows sometimes. Hillarious.

Man, last night's show was amazing...Pee Wee Herman re-enacting the Conan O'Brien Vs. NBC battle with Optimus Prime, a giraffe, a peacock pillow, and the bad guy from Avatar...Robin Williams going batshit insane, giving the middle finger, doing a jig, and singing "fuck the execs that can't take a joke!"

Wow.

It kind of makes me sad that *this* is what the show could've been if NBC had loosened the leash a little bit. Ah well.

And yeah, Craig Ferguson is still the best late night host, hands down. I'm reading his book American On Purpose now and he's got some life story...

Yeah the Pee Wee bit was great, Reubens still has it. Williams went even crazier than usual, sad that the show has been better than ever this week, right before they kill it.

When the Pee Wee skit started, I thought to myself, man this is gonna be really funny...but it just fell apart in the end. I was expecting a real perverted nbc joke thrown in but...come on Optimus Prime!??!!?

The Robin Williams part was totally unexpected. You would think that he wouldn't do something like that, but damn!! I am pretty sure NBC will put a temp ban on him coming on the tonight show with Leno for awhile.

The whole horse and NBC bit...holy fucking shit. That clip alone is gonna cost NBC a lot of money.

I guess conan has a clause in his contract that he can do anything he wants and NBC can't edit it (with the exception of the bluring of the fingers, and words), so they had to show that scene. Between the time the show finishes and the time it airs you would think NBC would edit it the nfl image (by bluring it out), but I guess they can't.

That skit was 100% gold and I'm the exact audience that the skit was intended for. I watched Pee-wee's Playhouse every Saturday AM when I was a kid and the show was on throughout my childhood from age 6 to age 10. The skit last night was exactly like the skits he would do on Pee-wee's Playhouse. My sister and I would annoy the hell out of our parents on Saturdays whenever someone would say the secret word we would start screaming and have "I know you are but what am I" fights.

Robin Williams has been doing the same sort of outrageous gags on late-night talk shows since I can remember. Robin Williams will be the guest for Jay and Dave and do new gags. It isn't like from now on he will only dis NBC.

All late night comedians have this sort of clauses in their contracts. Busting on your network is nothing new. Dave has been busting on CBS and NBC since day one of his Late Show. i.e. When CBS sold to Westinghouse in the mid 90's Dave made a toaster, lamp and/or washing machine joke damn near every night.
A ton of people, if recent viewing habits are any indication.
Then why are ratings for both of their shows so terrible?

Haha. Another thread CoffeeEdge graces us with his urgent need to let us know that he totally doesn't care. Details at 11.

But he has a non-opinion, and YOU NEED TO HEAR IT!!

Haha. Another thread where Strell (and Kirin Lemon, this time) graces us with his urgent need to talk about me at every opportunity, because he is obsessed with me (no, Strell, I will never sleep with you, stop stalking me). Details at 11.

Good job, Strell, you successfully derailed yet another thread with your stalking and obsessing over me (no, I will never sleep with you; stop calling me!).

30 million people watched this season's "American Idol" opener.

It was good, but I was expecting something like Pee wee gives the peacock a knife and stabs the other animal to death.

I did not know that.. I am not really a Williams fan anymore.

That's crazy... but this is costing NBC big money.... What can Conan possibly do to top this? What can he do to make NBC pay big time tonight?

What ever is it, it's probably being filmed right now

I truly hope that Conan brings out every character he has ever had on the years just to give NBC the big F you!

Whatever it is going to be I will be staying in tonight to tune in.

I'm not sure about the horse and NFL clip bit, but I saw last night that the car wasn't actually bought on NBC money. It was actually on loan from a museum, so it likely cost them very little. Still, the idea behind the bit is pretty funny.

That horse was close to Mine That Bird but most certainly was not - and astute-eyed folks noted that the football was not NFL footage - some other archaic pro organization from the past.

I didn't see it. Please tell me it was XFL. That footage can be bought with a tuner sammich.

I was thinking the exact same thing last night as the credits were rolling. I would have been tuning in every damn night religiously if this is the Conan they would have let us have.

I largely didn't have an opinion on this whole thing until then but now I'm severely disappointed of what could have been. Ah well, here's to hoping Fox picks him up and says "have at it, we won't neuter you."

Yeah, when Conan is being his natural self (aka what he mostly was on Late Night) then he's infinitely superior to Jay Leno in my opinion.

Would've been appropriate. Wasn't the XFL a failed NBC venture?

Yup, NBC and Vince McMahon.

Just watched tonight's show. It was great and sad. Watching Conan and co. play Freebird was fun and kind of sad again (plus I'm a guitarist and it was cool to see Conan play!).

I think Conan is the genuinely nicest guy on late night (or was) and I'm sad to see him go. I'm happy that people like that do get to rise to the top of their profession because sometimes it doesn't happen. I particularly liked his speech where he told people to not be cynical and to persevere and good things will happen.

All around class act I think and I will miss him from late night
