According to N00bz, support for the Japanese version of Lumines will be coming soon.

Much to the dismay of Sony, it appears that the homebrew community has finally created a downgrader for firmware 3.50. With almost any copy of Lumines, PSP owners will be able to have their systems revert back to an older firmware. Visit N00bz for the complete directions, but make note of one of the requirements: "Sufficient intelligence and English language skills to be able to carefully and throroughly read the instructions."

Downgrading a system CAN BE RISKY, and MAY CAUSE YOUR SYSTEM TO BE INOPERABLE (or "bricked"). Also, you will be voiding your system's warranty by using this hack. If you're willing to take the plunge, feel free. Once you get to 1.50, we highly recommend that you install one of Dark_Alex's custom firmware packages, to ensure compatibility with current game titles.

Downgrader isn't available yet but it is only a matter of time since a Hello World demo is available. I'm pretty happy because once again I can put off purchasing a PSP without feeling the need to rush out and buy a downgradeable one.

Devastation strikes! The “N00bz!” have yet again left the entire PSP community in a state of awe. Without a doubt, in the coming days, everyone will have the opportunity to downgrade, enjoy glorious custom firmwares, homebrew, and much more… This newly discovered exploit works in a similar fashion to the GTA save game hole; however, this time ’round you’ll require a legal UMD copy of Lumines. Read on…

That’s right - if you’ve got a legal UMD copy of Lumines, then you can run homebrew on your PSP - whatever the firmware version. That includes v3.50! Right now, the only homebrew is the Hello World demo released below - but in future we intend to release a HEN and downgrader.
 • Check that you have an EU or US version of Lumines (ULES00043 or ULUS10002). Currently we don't have a version for the Japanese version, but we're working on it, as soon as we get hold of a Japanese UMD.
 • Extract the contents of the 'MS_ROOT' folder from the ZIP file into the top-level of your memory stick. (HINT: If you wind up with an 'MS_ROOT' folder on the stick, you've done it wrong).
 • Start the game, and as soon as it gets to the 'Press START' screen, press START. If you wait until the demo has started, the exploit may not work.
 • The screen should go blank, and the exploit will start after a few moments. It doesn't do anything except look pretty at this stage - but feel free to enjoy the first homebrew on your v3.10 - v3.50 PSP

Dang!

Maybe that old copy of Lumines may come in handy. This is very big news.
Now I just gotta decide if I wanna pull the trigger or not- I'm kinda scared (whether or not it's rational or not) of bricking the darn thing. It might still be under warranty too.

Maybe I'll do some more research and decide. I'm pretty sure there's a very low chance of bricking if you follow directions.
wow nice... no need for special copies of the game either like the GTA leak.
I've been trying to find a way to get rid of my copy of Lummy for a while now too since I've got the second one. Looks like I made a good decision for once.

If it weren't for rumors of a psp redesign I'd run out and buy a PSP & Lumines TOMORROW!

I just hacked my buddy's psp for him, he had 2.71. And I 've got to say CPS2 games like Street Fighter Alpha 3 & Marvel vs Capcom look gorgeous. I also loaded up Suikoden II and Final Fantasy VII, two games I missed out on in the last generation.

Go buy those PSPs without worry, folks! Never been a better time to get one cheap, and the games even cheaper. Custom Firmware=Worthwhile PSP.

I played through Radical Dreamers, Watched the 1up show in full screen resolution, tried a bit of Under a Steel Sky on SCUMMvm, and Played Outrun with a full smooth framerate at 333 today, how about you?

Great, I just brought a un-patched copy of GTA:LCS from Ebay too.

On the bright side, Lumines is easy and cheap enough to find everywhere.

I wanna update to 3.40OE, but I am stuck with 3.10OE becoz of the popsloader plugin that lets you use 3.02 pops, which is the only firware suikoden II works on

(in the other firmwares, some battles freeze your game, and NONE of the fmv's show up. In 3.02, everything works but the fmv is all choppy)

I hope the downgraders and/or OE versions come out before Thursday. I fly back to Indonesia on Thursday and wont be able to get the files from my usual sources. Those websites simply don't work out there. (I hate the internet out there...)

Just PM me when it's out if it's after you're back.

Great...2 weeks after I go out and spend $15 on GTA: LCS for the exploit they find an exploit in Lumines. Great, just great.

Well, they havn't found a downgrader for the lumines exploit yet, so it could still be a couple of weeks.

15 dollars is a good price for that game. you could... you know... play it?
so in Suikoden II does the intro movie play, or does it skip straight to the title screen??
you know what, I never watched it, I skipped striaght to the title screen. sorry

But I know the opening for FF7 played ok. hope that helps.

Damn, I traded my copy to my brother for Mario & Luigi Partners in Time. It's going for like $45 on eBay now... for used copies!

Sweet! I've been debating on selling my PSP for awhile but with this new announcment I might hang onto it. I picked up a copy of Lumines at Blockbuster last year during a sale for like $9 new and I'm glad I hung onto it.

I hope I don't get crucified for asking but I never understood the whole homebrew psp thing. Can someone break it down for me so that I can get in on all the excitement. Thanx in advance!!!
you know what, I never watched it, I skipped striaght to the title screen. sorry
lol, sorry for hijacking this thread like Penny from Inspector Gadget,

but can u test it out for me?? The intro movie comes in between the Konami logo and the title screen.

even if u skip it, it should still appear for a short while.

but if it does not show up at all, expect to come to a point in the game that u cannot pass

I'd pick up a copy of Lumines, quick. I'm sure once Gamestop notices the demand for it skyrocketing they will bump the price of it accordingly.

I'm sorry, I can't now. I already gave the PSP back to my friend.

I think a good place to search is the AfterDawn Forums.

That's where I got all my tutorials when I started the whole downgrade process from 2.71 to 1.50. I had problems with 3.40 OE-A, apparently games saves are formatted differently in that version. I couldn't load up the UMD for Tekken: DR.

I've never heard of that popsloader thing you refer to. In 3.30 OE-A' I just place the game "Eboot.pbp" in a folder X:\PSP\GAME\SUIKODEN2 along with the keys.bin

You might have a bad iso if the game is freezing.

Suikoden II ONLY works on 3.02, every other pops will cause you to freeze.

my ISO aint bad at all, I ripped it myself !!

tho that issue regarding game saves sounds depressing :( I gotta look into that when more time comes

Sony probably hates the fact that this firmware has been exploited but should love the fact that copies of a launch title are now selling like crazy!

I can see it now. Every mediocre developer that wants a hit PSP will start coding future exploits into their games so they can achieve the 6000% increase that Lumines received from Amazon. :D
