Used Dreamcast back at EBgames.com
Seems, like I'M not alone here, eh....the industry killed the Dreamcast...that was the true all along.
Not just the industry, but the poor marketing techniques of Sega of America, starting way back with the early release and limited support of the Saturn. I could probably write a page or two about all the problems that Sega was having at the time, and if someone else wants to, be my guest. Sony, even though we all like to blame them for the fall of the Dreamcast (myself included) was really just the final straw ontop of a huge haystack of problems.

Genocidal: please shoot me one of those messages as well.

Any recommendations other than the incredibly obvious (Soul Calibur, Grandia II) for the Dreamcast? I will be getting one locally after selling my textbook. Yay! :)

My only problem is finding more DC games, most of my stores nearby either only have old sports titles or stopped carrying them.

While I know some people are against d/ling pirated games, it is very easy to play backups on the DC (no mod chip for certain models). It was actually one of the reasons for its failure from what I have heard. These backups are widely available on the net.

I am dead-set against piracy with current generation systems, but for certain games that are unavailable on current gen systems or extremely rare on current gen systems I see no problem (e.g. Rez). Publishers/developers are not making any money when we buy used/new games that have been in circulation on ebgames/ebay for years :) Though part of the fun is tracking them down (and finding them complete and in good condition!).

I'm sure you've already checked all your local gamestores with no luck. Those're usually the best places to check, otherwise you can grab some from EBGames.com:

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/224569.asp $4.99

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/224571.asp $1.59

I've never had a problem with the 3rd party ones, and sometimes you may get lucky and get a 4x one. Of course, YMMV, both with functionality and size.

Sailorneorune: You'll have PM shortly.

It's really a shame that the DC had to die so early in its life cycle, but probably the best time to get into DC gaming was shortly after the system's fall from grace. Back when DC systems were still available new, there were plenty of games on most store shelves, but it's been getting tougher and tougher to find games at all locally in recent years, much less complete.

It's been a hard blow in the face for all of us, who apreciated a fine machine like the Dreamcast........so long although SEGA really CASTed a DREAM on all of us, till today, eh?

I have played some NES roms on it (and I own the orignals), but it's not quite as fun. It's a good VCD player, too.

As for memory cards, the VMU's can be had at EB for even cheaper than $4.99. I've gotten them for about $2 before. VMU's need batteries, though, so get some originals as well. I always opt for 1st party accessories, but that's just me. The DC rumble pack is great, too. Usually less than the $4.99 price, too.

EB can be good for these things, it just depends on the store. Strip locations are usually much better than mall locations. Some SMs will load up on the stuff for their customers. I'm going to miss the location about 40 miles from here: stacks of keyboards, mice, games, everything. I'll have to make a trip before I leave...

Just to clarify - VMU's do need batteries if you're using them to play the VMU mini-games, but NOT just to use them as save cards. This may very well have been what you meant, but I could see someone who didn't know misunderstanding that sentence. ;)

To the person who asked for some game recomendations - here are some games I wouldn't be without in my library:

ChuChu Rocket
Jet Grind Radio
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (the DC version was the best version)
Maken X
Powerstone 1&2 (especially 2)
Rayman 2 (again, DC version is the best)
Record of Lodoss War
Shadow Man (...DC version the best...)
Shenmue 1&2 (UK import of 2, since it still has the original Japanese voice acting unless the Xbox version)
Soul Calibur
Sword of the Berserk
Zombie Revenge
...and pretty much ANY of the 2D fighters (Marvel vs. Capcom 1&2, the Street Fighters, Project Justice, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Last Blade 2, Capcom vs. SNK 1&2, etc., etc., etc. :) )

Oh yeah, of course.

More recs:

Toy Commander
WSB 2K2 (avoid 2k1)
Hydro Thunder
Test Drive Le Mans
Rush 2049
NBA Showtime on NBC (woot!)

Stealing copyrighted works is not just about money. Example: Someone draws pictures of art(whatever it may be) and has it copyrighted, then someone comes a long and copies it for their own non-profit use. The point here is the art was made and copyrighted by that person, so it is their right to decide what is done with their work.

I was thinking about getting a DreamCast, but I figure there are multible ways for me to obtain one cheap.

I got a Dreamcast from EB for $20 . . . great it seems to work fine.

I've played a Qbert game (got for free some time ago) and a Gundam game no problems.

Today, my batch of extras I order after I saw the DC working arrived from EB today.

For less than $10, an controller extension cord, a VMU, and Sonic Adventure. Surprisingly the game is complete and the disc looks fine . . . but Sonic won't boot.

The Dreamcast screen comes up and eventually the screen where you choose "Game" "File" "Music" . . . if you pick game it says "insert game . . ."

I'll get another copy of the game . . . but does anyone seen this before . . . the disc doesn't appear to be damaged.

It could be your DreamCast, even if it works with all other games, the laser could still be dirty. Or, the game may have not been properly resurfaced, which can cause such a problem. But is that what the DreamCast says when it can't read a game? If not, then I don't really know. Maybe it is counterfeit.

The interesting thing is that with most media based entertainment, production continues for years or indefinitely (music, movies). It does not happen with games. It's really been changing in the last several years with either compilations or sequels on newer systems. Also, the nintendo revolution thing seems interesting.

I doubt that any game creators would want their work to be unavailable to players.

I think for most it is a money issue (most publishers and game creators anyway). For me I would much rather buy the game if possible. :) I do feel guilty doing the very minor pirating I do, but until something realistic and legit comes along :)

p.s. thanks for opinion and sorry for post hijack! :)

There was an issue w/ the first batch of the DC launch titles (of which Sonic Adventure was one of) - some of them wouldn't boot. You may have gotten one of those "duds".

The topic title needs to be edited to show this as dead. My DC crapped out on me today and I was ready to order a new one when I saw this topic's title. How often are these in stock at ebgames.com?

On a side note, my DC problem is that it resets itself after about 5 minutes of loading a game, any game. This sucks too because I just bought 30 games from another CAG member and can't play them now!

Hot damn I'm glad I decided to get one when I did, or I would've missed this deal.
I seem to always miss the worthwhile deals.

Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to get a copy of Shenmue 2.

I had a friend who bought a Dreamcast about a month before the price was dropped from $200 to $100. But I waited until they were $20.
:whistle2:? In what country are the DC's graphics considered better than the PS2's?
Go hook up your DC to a vga box.

I just checked this morning and it's showing up as still in stock on the web-site.

This is the type of issue I was wondering about . . . I'll order another and see . . . Sonic just doesn't boot . . . not like its damaged more like its not in there

Is this really that good a deal? I remember when they were selling these for $10 for a while. I passed then since I have too much to play as it is. I kinda regret it now (just a little) but knowing that makes it hard to plunk down twice as much now.

Game Recomendations:
Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves (Garou)
Marvel Vs Capcom 1 + 2
Street Fighter 3
Sonic Adventure 2
Samba De Amingo

I used to have this problem too. It's usually caused by heat expansion from the power board, which over time bends six aluminium pins, and results in a poor electrical connection. Here's a link I found that should help you with your problem.

I'm glad that I could help.

Now that's what I'm talkin about. Gamers helpin other gamers out. By the way, I just opened the box on my Dreamcast from EBgames.com. Looks surprisingly clean and it has all the parts. Haven't plugged it in yet, partially because it's late and partially because I don't have any games for it yet. I've got Soul Calibur coming in the mail along with a brand new controller from EStarland.com. Anyone know any places in New York City or Westchester County that sells Dreamcast games?
There was an issue w/ the first batch of the DC launch titles (of which Sonic Adventure was one of) - some of them wouldn't boot. You may have gotten one of those "duds".
I recieved a Sonic "dud" on launch (9/9/99), but my DC actually played those games. Someone stole my original DC and when I got a replacement about 6 months later my Sonic wouldn't play. Luckily my EB was super cool and they just switched out discs with another preplayed copy. So not only were the discs defective there was something going on with the system itself. I remember I was so happy that I wasn't effected by the launch day bug.

I got one, along with 15 games/$50 (code CASTOFF), a 2nd controller and a VMU for a grand total of 71.84 shiped. I'm happy. Couldn't get free SAVER shipping, or combine with the CAG discounts, but the Edge card lopped off another 10%

VGA box next.

This gaming thing....it's a sickness, I tell you. :)
Playing DC Skies of Arcadia with the VMU mini games is a blast, highly recommended!
I concur with this.

Playing Skies of Arcadia in any way is a good thing to do.

I payed $40 for the console 2 years ago, and that would still be great value today for the system. No reason that CAG's shouldn't own one. :)

Yeah, it's normal. It's a little annoying at first but then you'll stop to notice it after you're completely into the game.

DEFINITELY agree. Skies of Arcadia was my favorite game on the Dreamcast and now it's my favorite game on the Gamecube.

I don't know if this applies to everyone, but beware buying these consoles from ebgames. I got mine, and it won't read *any* disc I try. No games, no cd's, nothing. I've tried cleaning the lens and blowing canned air in it. All it does is come up with the menu, and when I go to the icon to run a game, it asks to "Please insert game disc." I've tried this on mutliple games I ordered with my purchase.

BEWARE! EBGAMES DOES NOT TEST THESE UNITS!

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!

same thing happened to me. I bought 1 Dreamcast, the system didn't work. I bought a second one, the controller didn't work..lol.

Yeah, I was one of those who had a faulty Sonic Adventure at launch. Can you imagine coming home after waiting in line so long to find out the one game you got at launch didn't work? That fucking sucked.

To the people who get DC's that are dead or on the verge of dying here is the most common reason why. People used those DC's for bootlegs. For some odd reason the bootleg games wear out the DC's quicker. I'm assuming this is due to the DC not made to read CD based games. So, you got a used DC from a turd who used it for bootlegs and traded it in once he or she noticed that the DC was starting to crap out. How do I know this? I have a few friends who were into bootlegs and went through a bunch of DC's, while I still had my launch DC in working condition. ;)

Bootleg discs kill Dreamcasts.
Got my Dreamcast. When playing Shenmue, the disc access sound is pretty loud. Is this normal?
Yes it's very normal... I think. I know mines is loud at least.

I was debating picking the DC up from EB... but I ended up picking my Dreamcast up at a local B&M (the Book and Music Exchange of Henderson, KY); it works great, but has no controllers!!! They had a $30 package (console, VMU, controller, game) but knocked it down to $20 since they didn't have a controller. They also didn't have a disc to the Marvel vs. Capcom I had put on hold so they gave me Sonic Adventure and Space Channel 5. In short, I got a DC, a VMU, and 2 games for $20, and I ordered a Quantum Fighter Pad 2-pack for $15 shipped today. Still looking for another controller and a VMU though; check my tradelist for details.

I just hope this thing doesn't crap out on day 31... o_O we don't get Dreamcasts very often around here, even at the EB.

I just plugged by DC back in to a VGA box..awesomeness. All of you new DC owners need to track one down asap.
