Valkyria Chronicles 2 - Out Now

For those who haven't been keeping up with the Blog posts, they have two give-aways going on right now.

First up is the Alicia figure from the (Japanese only) special edition of VC1 - Link

Then there's the Japanese development artworks book (the 400-page hardcover artwork), signed by members of the Japanese development team - Link

I'm kind of uber-excited, as I won a "signed" copy of VC1 last week, and if they got artbooks signed by members of the Japanese dev team, I imagine they could get them to sign the game as well.

I picked it up at gamestop and they didn't give me the dlc code. No one even knew I was supposed to get one. I waited about 10 minutes when they went looking around their computers then just told them to forget about it. It was bullshit but I got tired of waiting.

I'm probably just gonna get it for $25 at Kmart next week and return it to gamestop. I bought it from them for the dlc and didn't get it so I'm kinda pissed.

Damn that sucks. Probably would've just cancelled the preorder and left if it was me.

OK an update. There's 4 save slots, but you only use 1 of them per playthrough. Don't know if doing the DLC takes up other save slots like it did in VC 1, but just be ready to keep only 1 save in this game.

The book style from the first game isn't completely gone, you can watch the game's cutscenes if you go to Avan's room and select yearbook.

The only units that can use healing items now are the engineers, but they can heal people from distances very far away, ie within gunshot range. Also they only have close-range pistols now for combat. Engineers no longer disarm mines, that's the job of the armored techs, who by default have large shields and only attack with large melee weapons.

It seems like the story is the only thing keeping this game from getting a high score. So far, from what I've seen, IGN and Gametrailers, gave it a low rating for its story, but high ratings on everything else.

The story is VERY MUCH cliche anime story. One of the things I liked most about VC 1 and Tales of Vesperia was that while the stories were anime inspired, they didn't have every stereotype of an anime story in those games.

ALTAHA ABILIA
291st Infantry Regiment, operating in the Rhineland during World War II.
Isn't that a bit far from where the VC series is alternatively based in, though...?

It could be when Welkin's and Isara's fathers were in war. Eh? Although, people are assuming the url code1935 means the setting. I wish companies didn't do teaser sites. Just surprise us at a conference. Err...

I hope they turn it into a franchise because the gameplay and mechanics of the game are just fantastic. This is a really high quality piece of work that Sega is not usually known for.

Played a little of this last night. This game is animu to the extreme. WTF were they thinking? At least the gameplay is generally the same. Let's see if it carries the game.

Yeah if I was reviewing the game, I'd definately give it a lower story just for the extreme anime paint-by-numbers story. None of these characters are rememerable in any sort of fashion like Alicia, Welkin, Rosie, Isara, and Largo were. I will say I do like Edy's sister better than I liked Edy.

I mean, certainly the first one was anime-inspired, but the storytelling was excellent and they really made you care about the characters even though they weren't exactly original. This is just straight animu bullshit all the way with cliches up the wazoo. Very disappointing.

EXACTLY. This is why VC and ToV, and to a lesser degree Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey, were so good. There were anime inspirations in the story, but it didn't throw EVERY cliche in the book at you and there was also awesome gameplay to back it up.

I only disagree in that I think the characters were fairly original. I'm only a casual anime watcher, but I really don't know of one where the main protragonist is such a nature lover for example.

If VC 3 is back on PS3, I hope they look at what made VC 1 so good story wise and don't just start pumping out generic anime stories.

I'm almost 7 hours into the game and I just started March (I've been doing all of the side missions and stuff). While I tend to agree that the story isn't as strong as the first, I've found the combat to be very rewarding and fun. I like most of the changes they've made and I hope many of them make their way to Valkyria Chronicles III if and when the series returns to the Playstation 3.

I also just did my first "Classmates" mission... It was pretty fun, but the amount of exp and cash rewards were a bit much.

Eternal Sonata had a decent idea, but terrible execution.

There were some aspects of the characters that were original, like as you say, Welkin's love for nature, but there were still some cliched aspects to most of the main characters. The originality sprinkled in really gave the game life.

I assume that's Edy's sister mission you're at. Can it be done with an average of level 5? I saw it was rated level 15, and I was scared to do it. Also those Gamestop DLC missions are rated level 25.

If you're on normal, then probably not. If you're on easy, then it's possible. You only have Anissette and Avan, so it's a pretty interesting mission.

I just did it on normal. Not that hard, except the first time I didn't see the Shocktrooper in the grass near flag 2 and he was able to kill Avan from behind so I just reloaded it and passed it easy the 2nd time. Got a B rating, winning on turn 4.

I think the level thing is somewhat of an indicator as to how hard the mission will be, but it's not like the enemies were higher level than my characters. Also the higher the level, the larger the award for winning apparently.

I REALLY wish there would have been a strategy guide made for this game. There aren't any faqs on Gamefaqs and despite the game getting a 9.0 on IGN, there's no IGN guide either. Still getting mostly B's on the missions, with a few A's, one C, and one D grade.

I downloaded the game off the PSN store, been playing it for a while.

But I've been trying all the codes that are posted on some sites, and they dont seem to work.

Most of the codes out there are for the japanese version of the game. To date, I think there's only three known codes, found at the end of a Cadet's Guide linked elsewhere in this thread.

Aside from that, there's additional bonus content from linking a VC1 save, and from linking a Phantasy Star Portable 2 save (Japanese version works).

I did the VC1 save transfer and unlocked Isara and her sticker, but I also found a code for all 6 characters from Edy's detatchment. Including Edy and her team.

Blitz Logo Sticker VWUYNJQ8HGSVXR7J

Edy's Squad CR6BG1A9LYQKB6WJ

SEGA Logo Sticker 6RK45S59F7U2JLTD

Also here's a download to a Phantasy star save file, It works and it unlocked all the content as soon as I transfered the file.

Anyone beat the story mission at the end of March yet? Game's been pretty easy so far (A or B rank on every story or side mission except for 2 of them) but now they just ramped up the difficulty on this mission tenfold.

I'm having trouble with it too... I think the trick is to keep running, but I've been finishing the other missions before I try it again. I just had my first encounter with the fencer class, so I think they might be able to take on the V2s.

Do you know how to build the ladders? That might be helpful. (I have no clue)

its a tough level. heres what i would do. deploy avan and a good lancer in the first map and leave the rest of the spots empty.
use the APC to rush down the middle towards the boss. End turn.
use a lancer and rush down as well towards the tank by the flag. it may take 2 turns but take it out with a lancer. after that quickly capture base and go to the next side.
use avan and rush down the middle and go to the next area.
then use the apc and go to the next area.
i think this would use all your points so let the enemy do their thing.
next use a healer to fix the tank. and then use all the turns to rush the tank to the finish.
and you should of completed with an A rank.

Maybe this has already been stated, but does anyone find it odd that when you go into the cup matches that the other team 1. gets to have more players on the field than you do and 2. gets to set up all over the field rather than just in front of their flag? It's a bit ridiculous. I would've liked to see both teams starting out in the same fashion, which would have made more sense.

Hmm... I wish they would have told me about those shield tanks before the mission...
No wonder I couldn't do any damage to the damn V2s.

Thanks for the help! I ended up doing every other mission before the story mission just because I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to do.

LOL last night i finally figured out how to run...

Man i dont know to buy this game for

28.xx + tax via gamefly

or buy

Dawn of heroes for 27.99 Via amazon

(not really sure if i even want to keep my Dawn of heroes pre order anymore but i think that is going to be a very small print run and could be hard to find later)

Whoa, where's that option?

EDIT: NM, figured it out. Thanks for the heads up though.

Transfer the save from your PS3 to your memory stick, then go to extras on the VC2 menu.

Any of you think this game will go through a price drop like VC1, cuz I am not seeing pricing advantage when comparing stores.

VC1 wasn't popular, and I got my sealed copy on Amazon for $20 over a year ago.

K-Mart has it for $25 from now until 9/11

Is it just me or is the voice actor for Alicia different for this game? Maybe its because I haven't played the game in a while, but I thought Welkin and Isara sounds the same.

Don't know if you got it to work but I was having the same problem too. Its working for me now by using all caps and using the "X/O" button on "start/enter" selection instead of actually pressing start.

easy game up to when that Tourament cup starts where you have to get that

in FEB i think

! to appear.... to beat the leader...cant get that stupid thing to work... though i used a tank to kill everyone in that area and sort of pushed him back against a wall

The leader have a speed buffer on him. He will dodge majority of your attacks. You have to wait a turn to debuff. It's probably wise to push him out of the camp site with a tank so you can capture the nearby camp. When the buffer start disappearing, you should spawn several shock troopers for co-op attack.

I'm enjoying this game so far but the story is ridiculous. Even aside from the obvious anime cliches. Why is the worst class at the academy being tasked with such ridiculously important missions - like escorting the Archduchess? And when they succeed at such missions and even receive medals of honor, why are they still treated like a bunch of losers by everyone else? Bah.

I'm also not a fan of grinding through generic copy-pasta "key" maps to unlock more story missions but I guess it's not so bad. Overall the gameplay from the PS3 game is well represented so it's still a damn good game.

Well, there's a reason why there was a quick tutorial for surprise attacks before that mission.

I just finished this one this morning. Basically, I sent a shocktrooper right up close to him, shot, and missed. But the point of doing this was to distract him. After that, I sent another trooper to flank him, and managed to hit him. From there, just switch back to the first trooper, and shoot, and back to the other, and shoot, and so on and so forth till he's dead.

and that is why i should stop hitting the start button and jumping over the cut screens :)

now watch me beat it very easy and then want to keep playing....Dawn of heroes just shipped out of gamefly so what i might do is

play dawn of heroes and send this back and pick it up for 25 at kmart if i ever get it

I don't blame you on that end. The story is definitely on the cheesier side of things this time around.

Anyways, this escort mission is seriously kicking my ass(the one with the first real boss and none of that 'named' soldiers/tank crap). Any tips?

I recall seeing, either in an email or online deal, that if you buy Valkyria Chronicles 2 for psp you will get another game via download. But I can't find this anymore. Anyone recall seeing something like this?
Thanks

I don't know about VC2, but if you buy a first run of Knights in the Nightmare, they give you a code to download Yggdra Union.

Gamestop had some extra maps. Too bad they never sent me the redemption code. >_

I've only played through til February and I like the game so far but will you be able to redo the story missions? I really want to do the January story mission over since I only scored a B on it.
