Vertical or Horizontal?!

I have all 3 current gen consoles, but I still have yet to figure out this seemingly simple question. I used to keep all my consoles horizontal to help keep the disks from scratching.

THEN I hear about vertical being best for each console because it supposedly can reduce the chance of overheating.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is which way is really best for the games and the console. Should I switch it up every so often? Or keep it one way?

Also, feel free to post which way each of your consoles sits.

Let's make this an insightful thread, folks!

The Wii stands vertical, the 360 and PS3 horizontal for me.

As long as it's well-ventilated, overheating shouldn't be a problem. I'm more concerned about one of the big guys toppling over, and I don't want to buy a stand, and I think they look silly on end. Yes, my rationale is 100% superficial.

I have been wondering this too. Right now I have my 360 and PS3 horizontal because it seems like they would get more airflow that way. And my Wii is vertical, but I think I might put it horizontal if it is better for the console.

I have always kept my 360 horizontal, because scratched disks can end up costing more then a overheated console in the long run hehe. and my wii is vertical cause thats just the way I roll

360 horizontal since I got it in mid 06, no RROD.
Wii vertical since launch, even tipped over once during a game, no problems

Grr, next gen they need to make sure they make a drive that suits the vertical stance, or horizontal console that has good ventilation. What do the companies even say about the positions?

I've never had a problem with a console breaking down, despite playing them 24/7, but this gen I don't know if I'm going to be so lucky with the increasing break down rates I've seen.

Also I try to keep my consoles off at all times when I'm not playing, so I turn my consoles on the old fashion way.... I wonder if that's why my consoles manage to stay alive?

do you stand your dvd player vertically?

do you stand your cd player vertically?

If you answered both of those no, why would you stand your console vertically?

I prefer to keep my consoles horizontal., but unfortunately since I got my PS3 I've been out of room and had to put my 360 vertical. It really worries me to keep it that way but I don't have the room to put it horizontal.

I have the same arrangement and that's pretty much my reasoning exactly. I'm way too paranoid about those expensive consoles falling over. I've also always thought that having the discs vertical is weird. I'd put the Wii horizontal if it didn't come with that nice little base and fit pretty much exactly next to my other boxes.

Not exactly the same thing though.

I'd think comparing them to pc harddrives would make more sense knowing how consoles are today, and I keep my pc harddrive vertical.... But the drives are better suited for the position on the PC harddrives....

I keep them all horizontal; just seems more natural to me.

I don't understand the claim that standing the 360 vertically will improve ventilation. Doing that you're covering the largest vent on the console.

GENIUS! :applause:

Anywho, I'm going to try to keep my consoles horizontal from now on. Like relicbane said, ruined games would be more pricey to replace than a dead console, and there's really no way you can get your games replaced cheaply as far as I know.

I'm still compelled to keep my wii vertical though, just looks better. But I think it's better on the drive to go horizontal...

I keep my PS3 and 360 horizontal, but Wii vertical for space reasons. Though when I travel to my parent's house for a break, I'll put my PS3 vertical so it turns into a heat chimney.

I prefer keeping consoles with disc trays horizontal while the others can go either way depending on space or mood.

Everything is vertical. I think the Wii and PS3 look better vertical, and the 360 I could go either way with, looks-wise. But I would prefer to have the 360 horizontal because of the disc drive tray - carefully propping the disc on its side is so 2000.

The Wii causes problems, sometimes. It's so symmetrical that I'll put the disc in upside-down (rightside-left?) if I'm not paying attention. It doesn't help that the direction is opposite that of the PS3.

The Wii is so small it can be vertical in my home theater equipment rack. The 360 and PS3 are just to big to be vertical without re-arranging everything else and throwing off the balance of my component placement.

I keep my 360 horizontal and I don't have a PS3 or Wii. I used to have my PS2 (regular, not slim) vertically oriented when I didn't have room to keep it horizontal, but a few disks wouldn't play unless I positioned the system horizontally, so that's how I have all systems now.
I prefer missionary position.

Unless you have a counter at the appropriate height.
DAMMIT! I WAS GOING TO GO USE THAT COMMENT AS WELL (the missionary position).

Though serious note, 360 horizontal. Wii is vertical for Wii games and it goes horizontal when using Gamecube controllers (thanks Nintendo for making wires that keep twirling despite them already being so goddamn short).

Our launch Wii has been standing vertically this whole time, and has never given us any major problems. That, and we have Wavebird dongles plugged into the top, so we can't lay it horizontally even if we wanted to (they stick out a little).

The 360 is standing vertically as well, with a fair amount of space around it for ventilation, but we haven't had it for very long.

I like to keep my consoles horizontal, but I cant stack my slim PS2 on top of my Wii so the Wii is vertical. The only thing I can do when I get a PS3 is put it vertical or get a new stand.

Both Wii and 360 vertical, they're both safe from tipping since they're in an entertainment center kind of thing. I do it more for space than anything. I think I'd rather have the 360 horizontal because of the disc tray, but it makes sense to me that it would be able to dissipate heat better vertically. It's probably not enough of a difference to save it if it's going to overheat though.

I've had DREs on two consoles that I've let sit vertically (PS2 and Wii). All of my newer consoles are now horizontal and I haven't had any issues.

All the furniture catalog minimal/tiny AV setups need to go so that we can forget about all the reliability problems caused by tiny enclosures and vertical orientation.

Although towers are vertical, the drives inside are horizontal.

My Wii is vertical for space issues. It literally has no place to go if I were to try and lay it down horizontal. I haven't heard anything one way or the other for disc health between the positions (meanwhile I keep hearing the 360 plays scratchmaster dj when vertical).

360 is horizontal.

When I had a Wii, I kept it vertical for a while but then moved it horizontal as it seemed to make less noise that way.
Although towers are vertical, the drives inside are horizontal.
Yes, that's what I meant when I said better suited for drives.

So far, I'm seeing horizontal as my best option. I'm a changed man!

But DVD players and CD players by and large aren't even designed to be set vertically, whereas the current-gen game systems are all designed to accommodate that placement.

I put all consoles horizontal.

If I put my 360 vertical, the disc drive starts making really weird rickety noises and my Wii gives me more errors when it's vertical. Never tried the PS3 vertical while on.

Upside down
If you fall into the ground
Coo Coo is the movie
Coo Coo is the city
Upside down
Now we are running all around
Coo Coo, are you dancing?
Coo Coo, are you feeling?

Picking up together
Growing up your fever
So you're never feeling blue
Oh, come and get it, baby
Hear the people saying
Everybody take your hand
Rolling on the ceiling
Rolling by your feelings
Rolling on the ceiling again

Oh, Juju told me Clover, he could be your lover
All this thought for losing your head
Oh, I want to see your body tossing again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

My Wii and PS3 are vertical while my 360 is horizontal. Having the system vertical saves some space, but I don't trust my 360 to survive in that position.

ps3 - horizontal (too heavy les it be knocked down)
xbox 360 - horizontal (discs can easily be scratched on the 360 if anything interferes or hits the console - happened to me twice already)
wii - vertical ( i just use the stand it comes with)

i prefer placing the heavier consoles horizontal, lighter consoles like the wii i would just leave em standing up. also i placed the wii vertically to try to save some space. It's placed on top of my HD DVD player lol

Much like what appears to the norm, Wii is vertical and the 360 and PS3 or Horizontal in my little fire hazard of an entertainment center.

All vertical, because I've got space issues. ;) No problems at all with any of the arrangements (Before I got too many consoles, everything was horizontal...)

I like the airflow to the "bottom" of the 360 better when it sits upright... and the PS3 just looks neater on its side (to me at least...)

As for drives being horizontal or vertical... I had a P2-400 from Dell (mini tower) that placed the hard drive vertically in the front of the case, and it's still going strong (as a firewall/media server...)

Goodness, that thing's what, 11 years old now... back when Dell made rock-solid stuff. ;)

Depends on what point of entry you want...

...oh wait, you means consoles heh

I have my 360 horizontal and my PS3 vertical. Not enough room at the moment to have my PS3 horizontal

I've been doing vertical since PS2. 1) Just fits better standing up 2) I would like to think it allows more air to flow and keep it cooler.
