VG Music Thread EP doesn't want complaints about videos

Favorite composers, anyone?

Well, anyone could guess I'd say Masashi Hamauzu for his work in both FFX and FFXIII. Nobuo is excellent as well, and I like how both composers are great for such different kinds of style. Hamauzu's tracks are often very layered, and therefore maybe less accessible than Uematsu's melodic style.

I could list many pounding orchestrated pieces with a flaring piano that's he's known for in both FFX and XIII, but for now perhaps this best represents the amount of layering and range that goes into this guy's work (listen all the way through, of course, well it's extended on repeat so, just up until then lol):

Still, he's capable of making beautifully calming pieces like Besaid Island:

Elegantly spine-chilling ones like People of the North:

Or hauntingly beautiful tracks like Dust to Dust:

Kirby's Epic Yarn has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard in a platformer. Really relaxing and fun music (with lots of piano!).
Tenpei Sato is an awesome composer. Almost all his songs are catchy, fun, and have a lot of little embellishments that keep them interesting after many listens.
I like his stuff too, especially his Rhapsody songs (Phantom Brave's OST is way up there too). This is my favorite from that game (possible spoilers present, since it's the actual cutscene):

(And in conclusion, I used too many parentheses in this post.)

Yeah, I was honestly not expecting the soundtrack for that game to be so amazing. It ended up being one of my favorite game soundtracks.

This was one of my favorites from it:

That Child of Eden song totally reminds me of this (it was also in Lumines 2) (singer sounds similar, although I think the singer for Genki Rockets which is who made this is actually computer generated):

Actually considering this is in Child of Eden I'm going to say that other song is probably also by Genki Rockets:

And why not here is the one from Lumines II, same as the Original:

Oh wow. I was paralyzed by sheer disbelief watching that Ultros video. I never wanted it to end.

Sounds like I need to pick up Epic Yarn.

I just finished up Bionic Commando 2009 and I have to say that not only was the game so, so much better than anyone will admit, the soundtrack was incredible. Great ambient songs and really exciting boss tracks. The best part is that at every other song is a reworking of a classic BC track, and it's amazing how well those compositions still hold up after 20 years.

A whole swarm of composers worked on it, but Jamie Christopherson (Lost Planet 1+2) has some of the most notable tracks. Simon Viklund (BC Rearmed) unfortunately only contributed to a single track. It's under $10 on Amazon MP3 and SumthingDigital.

"The Gauntlet" by Jamie Christopherson (boss battle)

"Desertion" by Jonatan Crafoord/Henrik Anréus (based on "Leap of Faith" from BC)

"Main Theme" by Jamie Christopherson (based on BC main theme)

Panzerfaust gets a lot of cool points for posting Besaid Island's theme. That's always been one of my favorite themes from any game. When I think of FFX, I think of the final Seymour boss battle theme and Besaid Island

Here is Sakura's theme from Super Street Fighter 4. I've been on a SF4 binge as of late. The soundtrack is pretty amazing.

My podcast has started doing a series of bi-weekly game music posts. Here's this week's with some of my favorite fighting game themes in case you guys are interested. Past posts have included overworld themes and Blizzard songs.

Here's an excerpt with videos for the lazy:

“Wings of Despair” -- Keiki Kobayashi (Soulcalibur III)

“Twilight Dwellers” -- Keiki Kobayashi (Soulcalibur IV)

It’s always fun to hear a different take on a favorite song—it might be a cover that casts it in a completely different light, or it could just do enough things differently to give you new appreciation of the original. In this case, Keiki Kobayashi took one of Soulcalibur III‘s songs—a solid track, although admittedly not one of my favorites at the time—and reworked it for the sequel. The result comes off as more majestic and less frantic, with a deliberate, dramatic opening that gives way to an anthemic rendition of the original. It’s an excellent accompaniment to the stage itself, which has you dueling on a raft traveling down a castle’s moonlit moat.
