I noticed there was no thread for the discussion of video game music, and it made me sad. I'm a huge fan of game music, it's pretty much all I listen to. One of the first things I do when a game is announced is find out who the composer is, and preorder the OST. I figured there must be other people out there who love game music too.

I'll start things off by listing some of my favorite composers.

Keiki Kobayashi (Ace Combat, Soul Calibur)
Go Shiina (Tales of Legendia, Tekken)
Masahi Hamauzu* (Unlimited Saga, Dirge of Cerberus)
Hideyuki Fukusawa** (Chaos Legion, Onimusha)

*The game he tends to compose for suck ass. Thing is the way he uses strings rocks my face off.

**A recent addition since he blew me away with the OST to Onimusha Dawn of Dreams. I rated it my favorite OST of last year. Even beating out Ace Combat Zero, a series that has had amazing music from the get go. But the character themes in Dawn of Dreams alone were unbelieveable. "Ohatsu's Theme" in particular is a superb track.

Oh man... I have about 5000 video game songs on my HDD, I LOVE VG music...

Some of my favorite OSTs of recent memory are:

Katamari Damacy
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Anything with Koji Kondo or Yuzo Koshiro
Blue Dragon
Persona 3
Chrono Cross
Mega Man II
Gyakuten Saiban Meets Jazz

Video game music? What're you people, retarded?

Err... I like the Shin Megami Tensei DDS 1 and 2 soundtrack. I actually bought the legit thing. And recently I've been listening to the Xenogears soundtrack, which is fuckin' great.

I still run through Mega Mans I-III and X-X3 soundtracks about every month or so. Chrono Trigger is also frequently listened to.
Mini Bosses albums...
boo mini bosses.

the advantage ftw.

as for music on my computer, i ripped the soundtracks that come with games, but the only ones i really ever listen to are the final fantasy piano collections. i also like to rock out to some mega man midis every once in a while.

Just a heads up: gears of war OST will be out at the end of the month. I have a rip of just the game and it's better than I initially thought it to be.

good ones:

Killzone
Rez
Grim Fandango
Oblivion
Kameo (surprisingly)
Killer 7
Blaster Master
Lumines II (Heavenly Star only)
All GTAs
Wario Blast
Vibb Ribbon

Shadow of the Colossus is in my car often, as is some select OCRemix stuff from Mega Man 2, 3, & X.

The Doom & Sonic 2 album projects are cool :)

on that note ICO is worth a nod... the game over and continue music for that game is superb.

The Gears OST is finally coming out eh? I do have to say the music in that game was a lot better than I thought it would be.

Also I really need to pick up that Gyakuten Saiban Jazz album. I love the music from those games. The orchestral album is one I keep on the playlist all the time.

Wowz.... yeah. I can't say the same thing about myself.

I did like the Call of Duty 3 soundtrack alot, though, and have been trying to find a rip of it.

I'm also into game music. That makes up a large portion of my music collection. That and movie soundtracks. Sadly, only a small portion of my game music I got legally. I downloaded a lot for a while and captured some from internet radio. I'm not doing that anymore since I don't want to run the risk of being baned. Gaming FM is too good for me to lose access to.

I would like to buy more soundtracks, but they are so expensive. I have picked up some though. I currently have a very small (but very good) collection :

Valkyrie Profile
Xenogears
Panzer Dragoon Orta (a cheap one I found at Meijers of all places)
FFX (a bootleg which I bought off ebay before I knew about bootlegs)
SMT: Digital Devil Saga OST (included with the game)
SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2 OST (pre-order bonus)
SMT: Nocturn OST (came with LE version of the game)

I'm not a big fan of game music.
At least not enough to seriously buy it.

I do have a few soundtracks though that I didn't buy myself.

If they would release NES and SNES collections on CD though, I would buy those

I loves me some game music. In fact I recently started ripping my PC and PS1 games that have Redbook audio tracks. Speaking of redbook audio, is there any site that lists all the games that have audio tracks directly on the discs? That would be handy... I probably own a bunch of them that I'm not even aware of!

Sometimes you practically get the full game soundtrack on those (MK Trilogy, Super SF2 Turbo for PC), or you might get an interesting "bonus track" (CastleVania SOTN, Puzzle Fighter). One of my personal favorite CD Audio soundtracks is Descent II for PC... very awesome stuff there! Apparently there is an expansion pack or something that includes longer versions of those tracks, so I'd love to hunt that one down!

I listen to game music a lot, mostly rpg soundtracks. Shadow of the Colossus and the Xenosaga series probably get the most playtime.

Nocturne and Advent Rising are in my car right now. I also have the Devil May Cry 3 soundtrack and a couple others that don't come to mind at the moment.
on that note ICO is worth a nod... the game over and continue music for that game is superb.
I love the audio experience of the game, but I found the CD to be disappointing. It's a pure soundtrack - just the sounds from the game, in what seems to be no particular order. Of 16 tracks, 3 are over 2 minutes. It would be great for sampling, but for listening to in the car? No so much.

That probably still isn't enough to dissuade me from eventually getting Shadow of the Colossus.

If anyone likes N64 music, 64th Note is awesome. It's a plug-in for Winamp that emulates the N64 sound chip to play audio files taken directly from N64 roms. Favorites include Tetrisphere, The New Tetris, and Perfect Dark. Both Banjo-Kazooies are great, but I don't have those USFs.

Some of my favorite recent soundtracks (that I don't own, incidentally) include Jet Grind Radio, Jet Set Radio Future, and Katamari Damacy, and Rez. Is there a legitimate option for getting the complete soundtracks to the Jet Sets?

I'm pretty sure the Jet Set Radio games had soundtracks available at one point. Thing is I actually didn't care for the music in those games aside from a few scattered tracks, so I never looked into it.

My favorite soundtracks are:
Xenosaga Episode I, Xenogears, Xenosaga Episode III, Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFX. Anyone else love the DMC3 soundtrack?

My small collection of soundtracks I own include:

Xenosaga Episode I
CREID (the Xenogears arrange album, probably the only time I will admit 1 CD being worth 30-some dollars)

A couple soundtracks Tokyopop released in America (these are all only 1 disk, so not even close to the full soundtrack:)
Chrono Trigger
FFIX - Uematsu's Best Selection
Final Fantasy S Generation Official Best Collection
Final Fantasy X Official Soundtrack

And then the pre-order bonuses/freebies:
Chrono Cross Music Selection
Legend of Mana Music Selection
DDS 1 & 2
Best of Suikoden
LE Suikoden V CD

I like the DMC3 OST, in the context of the game. But it's not something I'd listen to outside of it. I do own the it though. I like to recommend the Chaos Legion soundtrack to fans of DMC3's. Similar music, though I think it's slightly better.

Videogame music fans have a lot of reasons to buy the new piano arranged album called GAME by Michael Gluck. First of all, it's an American-made arranged videogame album which isn't all too common in the first place, but it's also relatively cheap at $9.99 and 20% of the profits are donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Michael Gluck, aka "Piano Squall", has been playing and arranging videogame and anime music on the piano since he was a child. 4 years ago, he started giving concerts at various Anime and videogame conventions around the country. During this time, he was able to raise money for many different causes but none more important to him than multiple sclerosis as he watched his grandmother suffer from the disease in the last 10 years of her life.

For his debut album called GAME (short for Game & Anime Music Emotion), Michael Gluck is going to donate 20% of the profits to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and has partnered with EA who will also match his donation for the cause.

The album contains 19 tracks performed on the piano and includes many famous pieces of music such as a medley of all Final Fantasy battle themes, as well as songs from RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, as well as non-RPGs like Super Mario World, Mega Man II and animes such as Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.

For those worried about licensing issues, it's important to note that Gluck has stated he has paid all the licensing fees to the original authors in order to sell this remixed album and that this album is perfectly legal.

To order the CD, see the full track list, listen to samples of the music and see videos of Gluck performing at conventions, check out his website at www.pianosquall.com
I'm definitely picking that up.

OMG, I love video game music. I listen to it in the car because I'm so cool. ;)

I'm copying my favorite composers from my Facebook. ;)

Nobuo Uematsu (Love that Final Fantasy music)
Motoi Sakuraba (Love that Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, etc. music)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Love the Xenogears, Chrono, etc. music)
Kenji Ito (Love that SaGa music, Children of Mana, and others)
Noriyuki Iwadare (Love that Grandia, Lunar, and Radiata Stories music)

The list of soundtracks I like is too big, so I won't bother listing them. :p

I always thought Uematsu was a hack until I played FFXII. I didn't really appreciate him until he was gone. Because I'm certainly not a Sakimoto fan.

I still think Uematsu is a hack. I'll admit his music was good back in the day, but it just doesn't work in modern games. I'm not a big Sakimoto fan either, but he did do good work in Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire. Both were better than the work he's done with SE.
I always thought Uematsu was a hack until I played FFXII. I didn't really appreciate him until he was gone. Because I'm certainly not a Sakimoto fan.
I like 'em both *shrug*

And wow, there's other VGM fans here?!

One of my current favorite OSTs is Giant Egg (aka Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg)-- I've never played the game, but the music is incredibly good, and it's a disk I highly recommend. Lately, I've also re-ripped the Eternal Arcadia OST to iTunes... playing Skies of Arcadia again must have something to do with it ;) Hell, any Sega soundtrack is good (especially if Hideki Naganuma is composing), but many of them tend go out of print really quickly >_<

And there's a Gyakuten Saiban jazz album? Is it better than the orchestra album?
I always thought Uematsu was a hack until I played FFXII. I didn't really appreciate him until he was gone. Because I'm certainly not a Sakimoto fan.
My situation with him is that I really loved his music, especially in FFIV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. After VIII, I felt he went downhill with FFIX (although most everything else in FFIX was awesome). Although I can't say I like his music as much as I use to, but I still do.

I haven't played too much FFXII because I just can't get into that game. :( I didn't like Vagrant Story though, so that could be why (Also, I really liked FFX, especially Tidus).

I tend to love the music in my favorite games... Mega Man, Sonic, Tekken, Rez, Gitaroo-Man... others. Coincidence that my favorite Mega Man sound track is Mega Man 4, which also happens to be my favorite Mega Man? However, I don't like all Capcom music... I absolutely hate the Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 sound track... and don't care much for the SF3:TS sound track either.

ohhh yea.. Overclocked Remixes rulez!

Chrono Trigger probably has my all time fave music. wonderful stuff. i'm really liking Chrono Cross's soundtrack as well.

I was addicted to Simple and Clean for a while after beating KH1 :)

My favorite soundtracks are as follows:

Ocarina of Time
NiGHTS Into Dreams
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Cross
Tales of Symphonia
Dark Savior

Only game I'd like the soundtrack for is Vice City, but that's been OOP for a while now I think and I'd wanna pay cheapass price for it.

I have the 2-3 disc San Andreas compilation soundtrack, but when played on my computer(from the computer itself after ripping it to it), it doesn't play the right songs when selected. It has the one song listed as by Willy Nelson, but it's something from a hard rock band instead. Just weird....

Wasn't really impressed with Odin Sphere, and I spent a lot of time with the game paused, so I'm rather familiar with it. What has Uematsu done recently? I assume he probably did Blue Dragon, but what has he touched in the last couple years?

Can't believe I forgot Baten Kaitos. The guitar battle theme and the boss battle theme are IMO the 2 best battle themes in RPG history.

Uematsu hasn't really done anything lately but Blue Dragon.

Baten Kaitos games do have good music. One of the few times I enjoy Sakuraba.

Take your Uematsus and your Takishimayoshisamaigakis and all your Japanese names and shove them! I'll take the Bully and Lost Vikings soundtracks ANY DAY.

Also, watching Bergeaud's work evolve from R&C2 all the way to Deadlocked has been very interesting. I don't think any video game music out there sounds quite like what he produces. R&C2 is probably his best work though.

Plus, Headhunter and its odious yet compelling sequel HH:Redemption still have astoundingly good soundtracks.

I could go down the list even further, UT99, all of Giacchino's work, Timesplitters, System Shock 2, Riddick:EFBB, NOLF1, NOLF2, 007:EoN, Sly 2, Sly 3... All good stuff. NOLF1 and NOLF2 are exceptional, by the way.

I'm not a Japanophobe though. AW: DS, God Hand, AA1, AA3, Dead Rising... loads more good stuff that I cannot remember.

Chrono Trigger, FF8/9, Katamari, Gyakutan, and some DKC tracks are what I have playing in my randomizer most of the time. I heard that there was a group completely remixing the OST to CT, but I forget how true that is.

I haven't gotten any new stuff, but I still love listening to the final fantasy soundtracks, they're amazing.

It's gonna take you for a ride!!!

I think I am one of the very few here who has a hard time enjoying OCRemix. The originals usually hold up alot better than the remixes. I mean why on earth would you want to remix Fear from REZ?

If you like game music, you should check out:

http://www.ocremix.org/

Some of the stuff is complete trash, but there are also some fantastic fan mixes/takes on original tracks there. If i have time later (slow day at work), I could link some of my personal favorites.

The torrents on the site are all legal, If you have the 2 or 3 gigs of space on the HD, there IS some good stuff.
