We won't get a proper sequel until after RPG Thread VIII-2!
Yuna like from Final Fantasy X? If so, my hat is off to you sir. My wife has expressly forbidden me from naming our kids after Final Fantasy characters. I almost snuck one in by suggesting Penelope, but she found out about Penelo from XII.
I wouldn't say she was named after the character, but it is the same name. My wife actually suggested the name and she had no prior knowledge of the character. I told her it was the name of a popular video game character, but it didn't bother her. We wanted a simple, unique but easy to pronounce Japanese name. That and Yuna was a little mix between her mom's name and her name.

Actually the name originally derives from Edo era female bathhouse attendants.

If I ever had a boy I always liked the name Kayin from Battle Arena Toshinden. My wife and I settled on Kai instead. She also liked the name Sho (her grandfather's name) as a possible middle name. Coincidentally enough also a character from BAT.

Lol avoiding names because it appears in a game is futile.

Ha ha, yeah, probably any name you can think of has appeared in some game. We ended up using one name from the Metal Gear Solid series and one name from Cowboy Bebop for our kids-- not on purpose though.

You named those poor children Para-Medic and Ein? You monster!

Actually, "The Sorrow" and "Jet Black." We're kinda emos that way.
I tried to like XIII. I even like most of the characters (Hope and Snow didn't really thrill me and Vanille's voice was ear shattering), but just the pacing at least early on was killer.

XII I had very mixed feelings on. I got about 15 hours into it before I gave up. I felt as I played that Basch or Ashe should have been the main character, that Vaan was just along for the ride. I couldn't get into him as a "focus" and it hurt the game for me.

X I absolutely loved. Even when I was pulling my hair out in those damn mini-games every aspect of it from story, combat, or characters were just what I looked for in an RPG.
I absolutely loved XIII. Favorite FF since X. Hope, Snow, and Vanille were very likeable to me, big reasons as to why I really liked the game.

FFXII I was excited for and liked the demo. Got the game and just could not get into it. One of the few mainline FF games I never finished.

FFX and FFXII : very well designed games, did not enjoy the stories.

FFXIII - horrible in every way possible except for music n graphics n Vanille's voice.

the game was straight up bad.

u kno what isnt bad tho??

Legit.

Mechanically, i loved FFXII. Story wise...? I never really liked the tone they set for Ivalice.

Which is odd.. considering that all of the games that took place in Ivalice (sans Revenant wings...) are some of my favorite games ever.

I liked Ivalice, actually. Especially in FFTA and FFXII. Still didn't get me to like FFXII enough to finish it. The world wasn't as good overall as FFIV/VI/VII, but those are hard to top.

I was sooo pissed that it took a year for me to give it a legitimate chance and I bought it on release day. It's a pretty game but it got too much hype to initially live up to what the game really was once you played it.

I liked the more political way they went about the story. Government, corruption, and all that nonsense (if I'm remembering the story right...).

Game had a few of the worst FF characters ever though, but then it had some of the best, so I guess it evened out.

I think I need a nice J-RPG not sure which one to play though. I've been doing a lot of Dragon Age II which I'm getting ready to finish up but also noticed I've been stressed a lot lately. Some people have comfort food, I have comfort games which end up being J-RPGs.

I've love to play FFIV Complete Collection but that isn't coming out until April 19th. Any suggestions you guys can make? I'm looking for something less then 25 or so hours tops right now.

Scanning shelves for a JRPG which will take around 25 hours...

Eternal Sonata?

I'd love some more Ivalice stuff. FFTA was some strange alternate dream dimension bullshit, so I don't count that (was FFTA2 the same?) but I LOVED FFT (War of the Lions remake), Vagrant Story, and XII. The more political natures of their stories are just something we don't see often in games in general, let alone RPGs, so I very much enjoyed them.

I'm loving Ar Tonelico Qoga.

Infinite Undiscovery takes about 18 for one playthrough.

The Suikoden games, particularly V, are very political in nature as well.

Hmm..all good suggestions

Already beat it and actually spent about 30 hours on it. (not counting when I just had the system on and wasn't playing)
I'm loving Ar Tonelico Qoga.
I have to beat Ar Tonelico II first since Qoga seems to take place after and has characters from it. (and no clue how long II is)
Eternal Sonata?
I thought it was longer then that, but that isn't a bad idea. It has been sitting on my shelf for quite awhile I only beat Act 1 when I first got it.

Magna Carta 2 took me about 30. It could be less, but I was trying to complete as much of the side stuff as possible. I'm not sure if you've played it already or not.

Yeah 100%ed it at the end of 2009. That sounds about right time wise. I think I was at 34 hrs or so at the end.

If you do play Eternal Sonata, do yourself a favor and just youtube the damned ending (starting with the final dungeon. That thing is just way unnecessary, long, and tedious). What a steaming pile of pointless monologue that was. Debatably worse than Xenogears ending, and that's saying something. Really enjoyed the game other than the ending though. And as others have said, it's ~30 hrs tops.

And speaking of WA, that reminds me I still need to finish WA3. Played a little over half of it last summer, but then lab stuff got hectic and I set it aside.

I tried playing Eternal Sonata a few months ago. I got to some big soldier boss guy that whipped out my party way too quickly and I never tried to go back.

I started Resonance of Fate yesterday. I'm having fun with it.

I loved Eternal Sonata. The ending (and the story in general really) was pretty cheesy, but in a cute JRPG-ish way. The battle system is definitely the best part, for my money it's even better than the Tales battles, which I guess is the closest comp.

Do yourself a favor and don't play Eternal Sonata. Not that it's a bad game but there's probably better JRPGs you could be playing, like Wild Arms 5. Eternal Sonata will be fun for the first 10 - 20 hours but it gets tedious and the story and characters are awful. But it is a pretty game.

I really liked Eternal Sonata a lot, but I got kind of stuck at the pirate ship part, gave it a break, and just never came back to it. I would like to finish it off sometime though.

I gotta add some of you fellow RPG enthusiasts to my XBL and PSN. (always nice to compare games to get ideas of what to play when you have the same tastes)

I didn't get the game until recently, and there's no way I have time to beat it (I already got a crazy backlog). Plus I heard many didn't actually see the ending due to the glitch.
Ever play Wild Arms 5?
I had the game since release. I enjoy it, but never beat it.

My only issue is they increased the battle difficulty a bit too much on PS3.

I like most Tri-Ace games, but I just cannot get into Resonance of Fate. I really dislike its battle system and some of its characters.

I will flat out admit that I HATE older characters in JRPGs (like you see in Lost Odyssey, Yuri from ToV, etc.). I like YOUNG characters such as Alex (from Lunar), Tales of Symphonia cast, Tidus, Hope, Kingdom Hearts cast, etc.

I doubt that came as a surprise to anyone. I mean, you have a man-crush on Sora.

I don't dislike older characters one bit. Auron? Barret? The guy with the spells in Tales of Phantasia... I know it's not Maxwell, but that's all I remember him ever saying =P

Add me, add me! Although, I mainly use my PS3 for PS2 and PS1 RPGs, and the only one I've played on it was Eternal Sonata... which doesn't have trophies, lol. But 360 for sure (that way next free weekend we can both be crap in MVC3)

I just started playing FFXII again and even though I hated it so many years ago, I am actually enjoying it now (maybe because of FFXIII). The sound track for XII is well-done and so is the voice-acting

I loved the battle system to FFXII but just could never fully get into it because of the storyline. I felt no emotional connection to the characters, and could have cared less of their fates.

Lost Odyssey on the other hand, I'm really starting to fall in love with. Minus, the healing issue. The characters are so deep, story is interesting, gameplay is fun. I'm really sad I haven't tried playing this sooner.

Also, feel free to add me on PSN/XBL too, I don't have enough RPG players on there.

Dude I loved Lost Odyssey the characters in there were some of the best I've seen. The interactions between the immortals and their children and grandchildren I thought was very well done, and the Thousand Year bits were great.
