What critically aclaimed games, are just not for you?

Morrowind and most 1st person RPGs. It was pretty much inexcusable that I could get to level 30 and not know what the hell was going on, thanks in part to no less than 100 dialog options for every citizen and a broken quest journal.

I tried to jump the RPG gap, but at the end of the day I'm a staunch Troika and Black Isle man *remembers the good old days of 2.5D isometric*
"Stat Games" - I wouldn’t know what to call it, but I've never been big on games that are all about your numbers: minding the stats, leveling, grinding, collecting loot, etc. This runs from RPGS to Dungeon Hacks to even games like Borderlands. I just can't get into them.
I

Halo - Played through Halo 2, and honestly have no interest in playing the series again. It just feels like the epitome of bland FPS.

Gears of War - Played through the first one and the multiplayer, but honestly it's a bit too hard for me. Even on casual I found myself constantly getting shot and not being able to figure out from where because I always had a big red COG symbol flashing on the screen. When that wasn't bothering me, it was usually some stupid-ass design choices like the Kryll, driving, etc.

So I must ask, then: what of Troika's first-person RPG, Bloodlines?

im just tired of all the games that use aliens now. it seems like every game has aliens/monsters in it. i hate halo, and mass effect to name a few. i miss the Max payne type of games where your fighting against people and not freaking aliens like all the games this gen.

(except for stranglehold and hitman)

One thing that irked the crap outta me about both Oblivion and Fallout 3 was that everyone in the game world seemed to level up WITH you. So if you wanted to be a bad monkey and go around slaying people in Oblivion you would get trounced in a second by anyone else with a weapon.

Furthermore, the third person views in both FO3 and Oblivion seemed 'forced' and unnatural, yet that's the view I prefer in my RPG's.

And what the fuck was with Fallout 3 requiring your gun skill to be super high before you could hit a shot on someone standing 3 frickin' feet from you. I tried playing it as a shooter cum RPG and I had the shots lined up PERFECTLY and every damned shot that I didn't do from within the VATS targeting system(which got annoying after the second or third time using it)went whizzing by my enemies heads.

SMT series
Luminous Arc series
any games where I play as a character that has to draw pentagrams, et cetera

I don't like messing around with demons and occult. I have no problem if a game has my character fighting demons or devils. But I have no desire to reverse that equation. No desire at all.

Halo because its so generic, bland, unispired and kind of boring. If it werent for the fact it was the only decent game on the original xbox for like the first 9 months the system was out no one would really care but thats how it got popular.

Call of duty because well they are all the same game only with increasingly better graphics. Every game is laid out exactly the same, has the same look and feel, same style and same everything.

Assasins creed. Gameplay sucked and I was pissed they shot the entire games big twist right off at the start before you even got to play. It was boring and repetitive.

Grand theft auto. It was cool and great the first time with 3, vice city was cool but after that it got real boring and all I wanted to do was run through the game to finish. I beat gta4 and played like 5 mini games, I took people out like 3 times and I was suddenly so damn sick of that time sink crap I just did main story missions. Why have such a huge city if your going to make 80% of empty and boring, I didnt want to explore I wanted to be done with it.

Any music instrument game. Just never appealed to me. I would rather learn a real instrument, course all I can play is the piano.

And gears of war because its a 9 year old childs idea of what mature is, has no emotion other than grim determination, everyone wears half a car for armor, the story is paper thin and weak, the characters are just cliches, and its hard to appreciate a game made by a man that practically jerks off at how awesome he is everytime he opens his mouth and actually devoted a decent chunk of time on the gow bonus making of disc of him making out with his girlfriend and breaking up with her.
You don't have to create levels in littlebigplanet to enjoy it.

No its not, but it is discussion inducing. The whole generic and borderline asshole'sih kneejerk response of "blog it" needs to go. Too many people just pop in and say blog it and run out instead of actually adding the conversation or saying much else, if anything else. Its damn near as annoying as "welcome to (insert past year of your choice)".

100% agree

For me it was valkyria chronicles

I played about 5 stages before I realized it was just an unlikable chore. I hated the load times, I hated the exacting nature of the gameplay, I hated how one mistake could compound until your whole squadron was mowed down.
Fighting games seem to require excellent hand-eye coordination, which is something that I do not possess. One time I played this random guy in MvC2 at an arcade and get my ass handed to me. He didn't even lose one character. Therefore, I don't play SF4, Tekken, BlazeBlue, etc.

I am also not a big fan of hack-n-slash games like God of War. I played through the first one and enjoyed it, but after picking up GoW Collection I didn't feel like going through it again nor playing the second one.
I love fighting games. Now that we have home versions of fighting games the difference in skill is on the extreme ends, instead of just going to the local arcade and play for a few rounds. Fighting games confirm a at least one fact, Losing F'king Sucks.

I consider hack and slash a hybrid fighting/platform game. It takes time to understand your most useful combos, when it is possible to use them and then of course understanding block and the advance techniques of countering.

As for those that mentioned about Assassin's Creed 2 fixing problems with the first game. AC1 still left me with a sour taste. Only way I'll end up playing it, is if i have no games to play and a friend makes me play it.

Valkyria Chronicles is freaking awesome. Love strategy RPGs. Sadly I lost my save data to a freaking YLOD, so I never got to finish it. All those grinding sessions are all gone. Haven't touched it since, will I ever again? Who knows.

Yeah Assassin's Creed was just an awful game. Like, it's impressively flawed.

And yet AAA scores were fairly common. That's why I still have not played AC2, even though my younger brothers do have it -- in fact I could start the game up now.

Most western RPGs... stuff like KoToR and the Elder Scrolls games. But Falllout 3 won me over, Mass Effect (I didn't get to play it until after Fallout 3) re-assured me, but Mass Effect 2 sorta pushed me away again (too dumbed down).

Any fighting game where you need skills :p (so everything except for SoulCalibur and Smash Bros).

Skills in a fighting game? Maybe Street Fighter, but even I(a long time Mortal Kombat fan) will say that most of that game is repeating the same combos over and over.

At least it was for me anyway. I always used to use the jump kick, slide and end with a foot sweep dealie with Sub-Zero. Of course, when I wasn't doing that I was spamming the special move(s).

Starcraft I and II. I just get bored really easily by strategy games.
Also the Halo franchise, they are good I just feel that they don't live up to their hype.

RPGs are starting to lean towards FPSRPGS, which is great. However, I didn't like the fact that Borderlands didn't really have RPG qualities other than quests and stats. It was too much like FPS to me.

IMO, that's all button mashing.
I can't and won't play any RTS... not even starcraft, nope... not 4 me...
I'm inclined to agree with you. However, I did play the hell out of Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth 2 and thoroughly enjoyed the game. That's probably due to the fact that it's a Lord of the Rings game, though.

Halo series.
Bought the original Xbox for Halo, played through it with a friend and we enjoyed it so much that we played though it on insane or whatever the hardest difficulty was.

We started playing Halo 2 but never finished, got bored with it and lost interest in the story.
Have started Halo 3 with friends several times, but have not gotten past maybe 2 hours into the game, bored with the shooting and not knowing if any "story" has been even given to me or advanced....

Grand Theft Auto 4.
I kinda liked GTA3 though I don't think I even got to the 2nd city.
I LOVE GTA Vice City. Love the setting, the colors, the sound track (I own the CD Box set) and the story.
Played the crap out of it and beat it.
Absolutely hated San Andreas. Put less than 10 hours into it and just gave up.
Tried 4, got 2 hours into it and realized that it was boring, shitty and I hated it.
I do not want to call my friends, I do not want to go bowling. F-That.

Games that I have not been able to get into, but will try again.
Heavenly Sword (I love god of war, why can I not stand this game?)
Bioschock 2 (First was great, was addicted to it, 2nd not so much).
Fallout 3 (Just picked up GOTY edition, going to try to like it again)

I'm just about to finish Red Dead Redemption, which looks great... but I've had maybe 2 hours of fun in 30 hours of gameplay. Obviously my decision-making is questionable. The game is fraught with bugs and time-wasting annoyances, and I've had more hours of fun in one night of Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days... a game Destructoid rated 1/10.

Also... Metal Gear Solid (Ps3) sucks. Stupid toilet humor, hours of watching cut scenes, dumb plot twists.... grumble. If I could get back the hours of time I wasted riding horses in RDR and watching cut scenes in MGS, I could play a lot more games.

The load times are MUCH improved if you do the 4GB install option in the game menu. You can also do in-mission game saves, which is something I didn't realize when I first started playing it.

There's a 4gb install? I thought it was 2.4gb. In-Mission saves are also the only way to do/A-rank some side missions, one in particular.

I won't say titles, but just competitive multiplayer, deathmatch in particular. I'm just not good at shooting other people. For objectives, I'm really good at covering various roles. However, I prefer co-op over competition.

Bioshock, and now Madden; Madden is the most over rated piece of crap game. Under NO circumstances should Madden receive good review scores.
and Grand Theft Auto 4;

I'm playing RDR right now... I just got started... lol I think I may have met that 2 hours of fun quota, as I'm starting to get a little bored with the game. So what I do now, is play maybe one or two missions a day (or two) pretend like I'm watching a RDR TV mini series.

Yeah same way.

I love Street Fighter, and I tried to love SSFIV but honestly its not the same. Alpha 2 is my favorite Street Fighter followed by Super Street Fighter II. But SSFIV or any fighters almost require an arcade stick or a the Sega Saturn fighting pad for them.

Demon's Soul was great but didn't beat it(at the blue dragon before Alant). One of these days I'll beat it. FFXIII was a game that did not deserve the acclaim it did. I'm sorry, but that battle system was a step backwards, less control over your characters. Tekken 6 with its super long load times(makes it almost unplayable).

Madden shouldn't receive high scores year after year. It's practically the same game with a slight mechanics update. And they charge $60 for an updated roster listing and a slight tweak graphically. Games that are generally short(3-7) hours are a waste of time.

- Little Big Planet (I played it solo and really disliked it, I've been told I need to play it with a partner to really enjoy it.)
- God of War Series (Played all of 1 and part of 2 and the Demo for 3 and didn't like it at all)
- GTA series (Never liked GTA, but funny enough I liked Saints Row...)
- Street Fighter Series (I really like fighters but I could never get into Street Fighter)
- 3D Mario games (I never really cared for the 3D Mario games)
- The Sims (Soooo Boring)
- Fable (Game was just a HUGE disappointment)
- Final Fantasy 7 (Out of ALL the American released Final Fantasy games its the only one I disliked.)
- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (The game was so boring, and I don't know if it was my copy of the game, but the load times were awful.)
- Madden and all other Football, Hockey, Baseball and Basketball games (I like playing these games in real life, but console versions suck. I only like Soccer and Golf games)

-Any "real" sports game - I think they're all boring....why not just play the real sport? (I do like games like NBA Jam and Mutant League Football/Hockey however!)
-Any RTS - I cannot stand the control scheme in these games.
-Any PC "action-RPG" - I hate having indirect control during battles in games like Diablo/Baldur's Gate/etc. I don't want to rapidly click my mouse on an enemy and wait for my character to sluggishly swing his sword 3 times while the enemy whittles away his health. (On the other hand, I love console action RPGs with 1:1 control, like the Mana series and Illusion of Gaia!)
-GTA series - I have zero interest in the missions/story and I get bored of random chaos after 15 minutes.
-Zelda DS games - I LOVE the Zelda series, but the two DS games are my least favorite. I hate the touch screen control for moving Link around! Why couldn't we have the option to move Link with the D-pad and just use the touch screen for items?! An awful mistake on Nintendo's part.

Any of the music/singing games. I'm one of those jerks that would rather play my actual guitar than try to memorize a bunch of random button presses on a plastic one.

After looking at MetaCritic to see what other games are 'critically acclaimed,' I also can't get into Halo or any of the fighting games (Street Fighter, Blazblue, etc.)

My top pick goes to Dragon Age: Origins. I just found the game incredibly boring and tedius. I love RPG's, but I'm starting to realize that with the exception of Mass Effect, I just don't enjoy WRPGS.

Odin Sphere. I really got annoyed by the whole seed potion reciepe memory math games.

Killzone 2. Short levels, little variety, drab colors, god-awful plot, weak boss fights.

Final Fantasy. Never really got into these games, the characters just never appeal to me.

Kingdom Hearts - Too kiddy for me.

Devil May Cry - After 15 minutes my hands hurt. Too hardcore for me.

For me it's the original Mass Effect, I really couldn't get into it and found the gunplay and the pretty awful frame rate just drove me crazy and didn't play past the first couple of hours.

I'm with ya and the atrocious elevator rides and the Mako :bomb:.

I'd have to say Modern Warfare 2. I tried to play it, but I couldn't finish the campaign without getting bored. It's just another generic modern-day soldier FPS.

Mario Galaxy 2 - It got praised as being better than the original Galaxy but why? It was a fantastic game but it was basically more of the same.

Borderlands - I must have missed something but it just didn't draw me in like F3 did.

Modern Warfare 2 - A death-filled 3 hour campaign (on normal) and a game that's basically the original with new settings and a '2' at the end.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 - It was more of a half-assed port with a few new levels than anything, completely unlike the first game.

Those are the two more recent ones that I didn't care for. There are a few more but I generally don't have any major issues with critically acclaimed games.

I think that Borderlands was more action (mindless action) and Fallout 3 was more story based. Borderlands... just give one or two tidbits of story and then from there you just go along and shoot everything. I couldn't bring myself to even try Fallout 3; and I know it was because I prefer the action with story on the back burner rather than the story heavy adventure with action added as a secondary gear.

Madden and NCAA - I like football. In fact, when it comes to watching teams I favor, I almost love it. It's far and away my favorite sport to watch. Every year, the EA football games get almost universally high ratings. Yeah, they're pretty similar year to year but I suppose stuff gets tweaked. The people who play it religiously probably notice the differences more than I could. Anyhow, I cannot for the life of me get into either series. I either completely blow out the computer, or get raped up and down the field. I can't find a comfortable middle ground. Playing against/with other people might help but that's bullshit, I'm not going to buy a game strictly for multiplayer when it is supposed to have a complete single player mode as well.

Far as actual games:
Assassins Creed
Bioshock
Borderlands
Crackdown/Crackdown 2
Fable 2
Fallout 3
Final Fantasy 13
GTA IV
Left 4 dead/Left 4 dead 2
Mass Effect
Madden
MGS4

I don't really hate it,but I don't see why tons of people are obsessed with MW2.

Anyone who calls Borderlands "Diablo with guns" should be beaten with a belt in the street. I love shooters and I love Diablo, so there's really no excuse for Borderlands not being awesome. I get how some people may not like the Diablo formula of killing stuff to get better weapons to kill bigger stuff, but, if you're into that sort of thing, I didn't think it looting well at all. There were so freakin' many guns that none of them actually mattered because their stats didn't vary at all. Do you keep this new one or keep the one you already had because the only difference is one is green and one is orange?

In the same vein as Gears of War, Dead Space. I think Dead Space is a giant RE4 clone and I didn't like RE4, either.

I find myself less and less interested in sandbox games lately, as well. I don't know why, I guess their novelty has worn off. As much as I want to play Red Dead and Mafia II and LA Noire and whatnot I probably never will.

That's true of any RPG, though. You'll always miss some stupid shots until your stats are higher. You can have the most powerful weapon in history but if you don't know how to use it it's not going to do you any good.

God Of War. I LOVE hack and slash games, but I HATE GoWs art and graphics. I Hate Kratos and I hate his weapons. I LOVED Dante's Inferno and Darksiders was fun. If I could do a character swap for Kratos, I think I would love GoW.

Killzone 2. I LOVED the way that game looked, but I could never get the controls to feel right or comfortable. It always felt like I was fighting with the controller just to shoot on that.

Fable 2. Peter's yet again unfullfilled hype. I hate hate HATED both of the Fables mostly because I looked forward to them for so long only to be very disappointed when they came out.

Super Mario Galaxy. I Am just soooo sick of the Wii MAKING you use their stupid controllers. I HATE pointing my controller at the TV

Farmville. Thankfully my wife stopped playing that Harvest Moon Rip off.....but for months I had to hear about who's crops where wilting and how she had to rush home to water her tomatoes. You are so worried about your fake garden when you could go outside and plant us a fucking REAL one.

Gran Turismo. BIIIIIG hype....BIIIG build up.....BIIIIG delays.....and Forza is better anyways.

Madden. Line up the freaking cattle to drop another $60, wash, repeat YEARLY. Wise up folks. EA hates you but loves your wallet.

MLB 10 The Show. Hey here is an Idea! Lets make a baseball that looks soooo good you will want to take it home, marry it and then fuck it! But to make funny to us, lets make the running suck, the AI cheap as hell and the Online a broken mess. Damn you Sony.....
