Ok,

I hate these posts but I've waited for several months now to come across some sort of explanation of what this "teh" thing is all about. For those of us who either missed out on some sort of inside joke from a flame war we didn't attend, or fund ourselves to be old and out of touch with pop culture - can someone explain what's funny about "teh"?

1337 speak is a version of pig-latin for dorks. Anyone who uses that crap deserves to have someone kick the shit out of them and take their lunch money.

it's the most annoying shit ever...

one of my most hated is OMGWTFBBQ

or when ppl put exclamation points followed by 1's and even write out the word "one", like

OMGWTFBBQ!!!111one

"Teh" is the internet equivalent of ebonics. I think DDF invented it. :roll:

The only "word" that is more annoying than "teh" is "pwned".

I think most people just don't care for it being used in every phrase or as if they are legit words. In your sig it's funny IMO.
 
Unsurprising for an Internet thing, this has some history in SF fandom.

There was a time when being fannish carried a social stigma among mundanes, the word used to describe the majority of humanity lacking the mutant capacity for high-end dreaming. When the local newspaper would send a reporter to a Con to see what these weird people were about, there would be a certain amount of chain pulling combined with spelling errors that were assumed to be correct because these freaks had all sorts of strange jargon they used. So beer got listed as bheer, leaving readers to think something exotic was involved. The fannish would inevitably treat such situations as secret truths and forever afteruse that spelling just to mess with mundane heads. Over the decades the SMOFs built up a massive vocabulary and many of the first net users were from the same crowd.
