CAGiversary!
A group of six including my sister, sister's friend, cousin, and I all went to the Music Builds tour stop south of Cleveland. Of the four bands I was only familiar with Jars of Clay and Switchfoot, but both are among my favorite bands so going was a no-brainer.
Jars of Clay was on first and either they didn't have as many fans or most people were just late because the place was half-empty and nobody really got that into it. They played for about 40 minutes and announced that afterward they'd be my the t-shirt stand meeting fans. Well I wasn't sure if they meant after they were done or after the whole concert so I him-hauled around before my sister, cousin, and I headed off to the t-shirt stand.
Well right when we got there we saw them walking back towards their bus on a walkway that was parallel to the public walkway. So we kept pace with them walking back and when we lost sight of them my cousin decided that she wanted ice-cream. Well right in the concessions area we saw them, their walkway led right there. So they were walking past us about five feet away and my sister and cousin were just watching them and squealing. I thought, screw it, I don't care that they're walking past with security, I'm going to shake their hand. So I walked up to them and even though they didn't stop I got to shake the pianist (Charlie Lowell's) hand and told him "great music man." I was disappointed that I wasn't more assertive and just stopped them so I could meet them all, they seemed friendly enough. But even my meager handshake was enough to make both my sister and cousin jealous.
By the time Switchfoot came out the crowd had more than doubled and it seemed like most of the people were there just for them. Almost an hour later Switchfoot was done and my sister's friend took her to go meet the band. She was pretty new to Switchfoot but liked them enough to purchase a membership to their fanclub which came with a pass to meet them after shows, and she could bring a friend. About 15 minutes after they left my cousin and I called my sister and she told us that they were just lined up by the left side of the stage after the security had checked their passes. So my cousin and I decided to try and get in despite our lack of fanclub membership.
We ran over there and slipped through a fence and went to the back of the line right when they let the line through. Everyone then lined up my a stairwell and were being let in group by group to go meet the band. After a half-an-hour of waiting and wondering if they'd turn us away we got in a met the band. I shook their hands and introduced myself to everyone (in hindsight I missed the drummer). When they were ready to take a picture with me and my cousin I took off my jacket (I was wearing the "SublimI'mAwesominal" shirt from Threadless) and the bass player said "awesome shirt." Well as soon as he said that all of them had to see it. They asked me where I got it. I didn't want to advertise for Threadless so I just said "Online", but I really thought about just giving it to them.
We all left right after that. It was really good. The acoustics of the place were much better than the ice-skating rink I went to see Modest Mouse at. Also, I was far enough away that I didn't feel the need for ear-plugs, even though I had brought some. Over all the concert was good, but at least partially meeting two of my favorite bands made it awesome.
