What was the last concert/show you went to?

A group of six including my sister, sister's friend, cousin, and I all went to the Music Builds tour stop south of Cleveland. Of the four bands I was only familiar with Jars of Clay and Switchfoot, but both are among my favorite bands so going was a no-brainer.

Jars of Clay was on first and either they didn't have as many fans or most people were just late because the place was half-empty and nobody really got that into it. They played for about 40 minutes and announced that afterward they'd be my the t-shirt stand meeting fans. Well I wasn't sure if they meant after they were done or after the whole concert so I him-hauled around before my sister, cousin, and I headed off to the t-shirt stand.

Well right when we got there we saw them walking back towards their bus on a walkway that was parallel to the public walkway. So we kept pace with them walking back and when we lost sight of them my cousin decided that she wanted ice-cream. Well right in the concessions area we saw them, their walkway led right there. So they were walking past us about five feet away and my sister and cousin were just watching them and squealing. I thought, screw it, I don't care that they're walking past with security, I'm going to shake their hand. So I walked up to them and even though they didn't stop I got to shake the pianist (Charlie Lowell's) hand and told him "great music man." I was disappointed that I wasn't more assertive and just stopped them so I could meet them all, they seemed friendly enough. But even my meager handshake was enough to make both my sister and cousin jealous.

By the time Switchfoot came out the crowd had more than doubled and it seemed like most of the people were there just for them. Almost an hour later Switchfoot was done and my sister's friend took her to go meet the band. She was pretty new to Switchfoot but liked them enough to purchase a membership to their fanclub which came with a pass to meet them after shows, and she could bring a friend. About 15 minutes after they left my cousin and I called my sister and she told us that they were just lined up by the left side of the stage after the security had checked their passes. So my cousin and I decided to try and get in despite our lack of fanclub membership.

We ran over there and slipped through a fence and went to the back of the line right when they let the line through. Everyone then lined up my a stairwell and were being let in group by group to go meet the band. After a half-an-hour of waiting and wondering if they'd turn us away we got in a met the band. I shook their hands and introduced myself to everyone (in hindsight I missed the drummer). When they were ready to take a picture with me and my cousin I took off my jacket (I was wearing the "SublimI'mAwesominal" shirt from Threadless) and the bass player said "awesome shirt." Well as soon as he said that all of them had to see it. They asked me where I got it. I didn't want to advertise for Threadless so I just said "Online", but I really thought about just giving it to them.

We all left right after that. It was really good. The acoustics of the place were much better than the ice-skating rink I went to see Modest Mouse at. Also, I was far enough away that I didn't feel the need for ear-plugs, even though I had brought some. Over all the concert was good, but at least partially meeting two of my favorite bands made it awesome.

Journey was the last one I went to. It was a great show. Cheap Trick and Heart were good too.

My next show is Iced Earth in two weeks. Then maybe Mushroomhead next month, and then Opeth the following week.

I can't wait, good shows are rare around here, so i'm excited to be going to some.

I went to The Mars Volta show last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom and was kinda bored, next show is hopefully Freezepop on Oct 9

I was at End Fest in Washington state when Mars Volta got all pissy and walked off the stage after playing one song.

They're a bunch of bitches, IMO, but their music is good.

The last concert I saw was Bumbershoot in Seattle, highlighted by Stone Temple Pilots. I'm a huge 90s kind of guy, so it was great seeing Scott and the DeLeo brothers still rocking ass after all that heroin.

Last night I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at the Hollywood Bowl, along with Cat Power and Spiritualized. It was my first time seeing Cave so that was quite an experience.

Unfortunately, the Bowl cut the Bad Seeds' set short because of a noise curfew (the Bowl is open-air). The set was 80 mins as is, but I think it could've easily gone to two hours.

Finished up ACL this weekend. I saw the following:

Silversun Pickups
Neko Case
Stars
Xavier Rudd
Flyleaf
Iron & Wine
MGMT
CSS
The Fratellis
Fleet Foxes

CSS and Xavier Rudd were absolutely astounding.

Well you weren't paying attention at all at that end fest, if you were, you wouldn't know that someone threw a piss filled condom at Omar's equipment and fucked it up because Cedric dissed people "slam dancing"

and yes STP kicked ass at Bumbershoot despite them starting 40 minutes late.....

I wasn't paying attention because I wanted to see Modest Mouse and had to put up with Mars Volta instead.

I can see why they were pissed off, but why would they have to resort to calling out their fans? Who cares what they're doing - they're enjoying music.

Musicians are at their jobs when they perform on stage. If someone came to your workplace and did that, would you simply keep working or call them out?

As did I. It was a great show. :applause:

Point taken, but these "fans" are paying good money so they can enjoy a show the way they want. I see what you're saying, but it's somewhat irritating having a band tell you how to enjoy a show (by not moshing, etc.). That said, throwing junk at them is not a reasonable response.

Anyway - enough said. I'll stop posting about this starting ... NOW!

I've been slacking mentioning shows I've gone to but I had an amazing four days last week:

Tuesday - My Bloody Valentine
Wednesday - Black Mountain
Thursday - Meat Puppets/Dinosaur Jr./Built to Spill
Friday - Denali

I saw Neko Case last Saturday. Though she is still technically on her "Fox Confessor" tour, she played five new songs (that I remember), and they were pretty good. A worthwhile show, I thought, despite the fact that it was relatively short and the opener did nothing for me.

Damn.

I was in guitar rock heaven. Built to Spill played Perfect From Now On in its entirety which was absolutely beautiful.

Damn.

I would absolutely shit if that happened. I love "Perfect From Now On" -- it's easily my favorite Built To Spill record.

I was kinda disappointed she wasn't with the New Ponographers when I saw them last month at Street Scene. Also saw Cat Power while I was there.

Bad Religion and The Bronx a couple of weeks ago. Never listen to The Bronx, but who the fuck cares - it's Bad Religion! Played 4 New Maps of Hell Songs: New Dark Ages, Requiem ("This song's written for all the lazy bastards like me," explained Greg), Honest Goodbye, and a surprisingly awesome acoustic version of Dearly Beloved. A shame that there was no Pilgrim or Scrutiny, but I'll live. The bigger shame was that they didn't start out with - or include in any way - Sinister Rouge. Still, a fucking awesome show. Also, pit floor + beer = slipperiest substance evah.

Going to see the Veils at an acoustic in-store tomorrow, followed by them and Liam Finn in full sets at the Ballroom next door.

Just got back from Saul Williams. HOLY fuckING SHIT.

The local band that opened for him, Ringo Deathstar, was actually really good too. They were shoegaze.

Reel Big Fish - They kicked much ass for the most part, but they screwed up on one of my favorite songs of theirs, S.R. (the many versions of), and had technical difficulties through the beginning of the show. In addition to that, they did this BS lame trick of trying to walk off stage only to come running right back on to play a supposed "encore".

Modest mouse????? ummm...MM wasnt there..they dropped out last minute along with snow patrol....RHCP replaced MM and TMV replaced snow patrol....

I saw The New Pornographers not that long ago (when they were touring with Spoon) with both Neko Case AND Dan Bejar. It was pretty amazing. Nothing against A. C. Newman and the gang, but I think, now, seeing The New Pornographers without Bejar and especially without Case would feel a little cheapened.

I heard Cat Power is really good live. (I was also told that Chan Marshall is "smokin' hot" and that she smokes like a steam engine while on stage.)

BlöödHag
Genghis Tron
Baroness

So fucking good. BlöödHag was awesome as usually, though I almost got hit with a book about four times. Genghis Tron was amazing, they had an awesome light show and did a Big Black cover. Funny to see how many people there were, as when I saw them two years ago, there were only about fifteen. Baroness just played an outstanding set, only taking a pause before the last song to say thanks. Over an hour of solid pounding sludge awesome.

Nice. Saul's got an aura around him, no?
Weezer, Angles & Airwaves, Tokyo Police Club
I saw this last night, Weezer was incredible!
Yeah, Weezer rock live! I've seen them 6 times now and Rivers has gotten a lot more social over the course of the last 8 years. I remember he would just stay in one spot , sing and play guitar, and barely move around. Now he is all over the place and a lot more talkative. It's nice to see he has come out of his shell. I think it has a lot to do with him getting married and no longer caring what others really think anymore.

Haven't updated this in a little while...

Sept 22 @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC

Yeah, he was crazy live, he was jumping around on a trampoline, sliding on the floor, and a ton of other crazy stuff. Also possibly the greatest thing ever, there was someone in a wheelchair CROWD SURFING!!

Pics here,

Alkaline Trio was the only band playing that I actually liked going in. Their set was kind of meh: (30 mins.), mostly limited to songs from the new CD, and fairly low-energy.

Gaslight Anthem was a pleasant surprise. Imagine Bruce Springsteen as the lead singer for Against Me!, and you're in the ballpark. Bought the CD.

Thrice was pretty mediocre. Generic screamo. Sat through the first song or so and then made my way to the lobby to look for alcohol and swag.

Rise Against was good, but their style is just on the fringes of what I would consider acceptable. I like the politics but it's a bit too screamy for me. And that "Swing Life Away" song is fucking awful. The energy level was amazing, though, and I found myself bouncing along through most of their set.

In short, I'm glad I didn't pay for my ticket, but the evening definitely wasn't a total waste.

Hmm thanks for the info. I like a handful of Thrice songs and Alkaline Trio songs. I really like Gaslight Anthem, I just got into them recently and I really like to like most of Rise Against's music. With that said I think I feel better now about choosing to go to Portugal the Man for a 1/4th the cost.
