The only memory I have of Xenogears is renting it once. That's all I can recall about it.

Same here, I had some friends back in HS that would trade a copy of it back and forth throughout the years but never cared because I was so into Front Mission 3 at the time. But if I remember correctly wasn't Xenogears a 4 disc set? How do they merge all those disc together in one file????

Side note: The anime of Xenogears is up from streaming on Netflix.

I don't have a multidisc game to be sure, but I believe that you get all of the discs in one file and when the time comes to switch discs, you just click on the switch disc option in the menu to switch to the next disc and continue on.

^ that is correct.

I still think Xenogears is hella playable - great action, innovative menu system, and one of the finest stories in gaming (if you can get beyond the bluster and pretense).
But if I remember correctly wasn't Xenogears a 4 disc set?
XG was only 2 discs.

And I'm suddenly reminded of how much weirder that game got after the disc switch.
XG was only 2 discs.

 indeed.
Actually we didnt interpret what he said differently. I just responded to a different part of his post than you did. I was just speaking to the PS1 era graphics. Whether or not you will like an old game like Xenogears will vary widely. I played it when it first came out and liked it.(but not clamoring to play it again) Though, being an RPG, the graphics may not be that distracting compared to shooting or action games.
Guess I need to keep working on that readin' thing. ;)

And since I already went on at length on my thoughts of the game (which is not to relevant to the fans of the game) I'll leave it as it is.
XG was only 2 discs.

The creator / director went too epic and still doesn't know how to have economy of storytelling in his games (just see the Xenosaga trilogy for proof of that).

Well, Xenosaga was supposed to be a seven or eight disc epic spanning nearly a decade so he does know how to cut back a bit.

Ahhhh....hopefully Xenogears shows up by the end of the day, been wanting to play this one for years after playing a demo fo it back when I was a young lad, but never wanted to pay the expensive price for a copy of it

It's not an official update week, so that's all there is since Sky Fighters went on sale for everybody and was adjusted accordingly for PS+.

Totally peeved about the Gamer's Choice themes. I was so excited to get a Persona 3 and Pac-man championship theme for my PS3, and all four of the themes turned out to be the same lame generic them.

It is really nice seeing some price drops on PSP games. I have been a huge supporter of digital downloads vs physical media, but one of the big faults with DD is that prices do not drop often enough or by large enough amounts. A year or two after a game comes out its almost full price for the DD copy on a lot of places where you can get it for litterally 50-75% less if you buy it in physical form.

Well, that's interesting to know.

Picked up RE2 since I had never played any of the old games and wanted to give it a try. OH MY GOD. Those controls are HORRENDOUS. I honestly don't see how so many people prefer them over RE4/5 and are actually pushing to have them brought back for RE6. I can't make it to the damn gun shop without getting killed because I can't seem to navigate through the zombies. I tried killing them, but it's beyond me how anyone can get a headshot with these controls. I really wish you could change them like I heard you can with the N64 version, because to me this is borderline unplayable. Oh well, at least it's only $3 lost. Ok, rant over.

headshots are pretty much impossible unless you use a shotgun and get close to the zombie and aim up. yeah the controls sucked compared to now but if you played it back when you got used to it and pushed through.

i think what people prefer in re 1- cv versus re4/5 is the story and atmosphere. those games were scary as fuck back then especially 3 when nemesis would open doors and come after you.

add to that having to ration out ammo for boss battle and doing your best to conserve health items and those games were way more of a challenge. when you beat them you knew youd accomplished something where nowdays with re games all you think is " is that it"?

Yea the controls weren't the best, but if you look up people doing speed runs on youtube, they somehow manage to make it work. I have the original version and played...I think Chris A was the mode I finished. Never took that far to get Hunk of Tofu, was too hard for me at the time.

They did it with Yakuza 3 last year too, so not a huge surprise by any stretch of the imagination. See any of their releases in the past year, I think Vanquish is the only not released in the melee of other big name titles. They need to get rid of the trained monkey that throws darts at a calender and actually learn how to plan release dates better. =/
Just like when they released Resonance of Fate on the same day as Final Fantasy XIII
Exactly, but the upside to that is RoF is played and the only platinum I have while FF13 is still on the shelf, sealed and still unloved to this very day. Shame they didn't know what they had and couldn't market it better. But then again this is Sega we're talking about, they'll probably even screw up Of the End's release and that is a game that lends itself to awesome sales, Zombies and Yakuza, how can you go wrong there, but they will, mark my words.

It's a 13 year old game, whadda want...? 13 years ago it was playable, still is playable now if you know what to expect going into it, that's why they call it tank controls, because that's what it is, the games aren't any worse because of it, just not as technically savvy as the games that come out this day and age is all.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/27/the-drop-week-of-feb-28th-2011-new-releases/

The Drop for this week:
PlayStation Network

PixelJunk Shooter 2 – In PixelJunk Shooter, players pilot a subterranean vehicle to explore the interior of diverse cave-like complexes. The player must affect the surrounding and dynamic terrain to progress.

The goal is to safely navigate through each vivid stage and rescue survivors scattered about the cavernous environment. Each stage is in-effect a flow simulation whereby the player attempts to control various types of liquid (water, magma, etc) and solid matter (rock, earth) either by destroying it, manipulating it or moving it.

Modnation Racers – ModNation Racers is a thoroughly fresh take on classic kart racing that empowers the player to personalize their entire game. Players can express themselves by creating their own Mod character, styling their own racing kart and even building — in just minutes — an imaginative track that can be shared with the rest of the PlayStation community via the free PlayStation Network service.

PSN Demos

 • MLB 2K11
 • Call of Duty: Black Ops
 • Top Spin 4
 • Alien Breed 3: Descent
 • Marvel Pinball
PSone Classics

Vagrant Story — Adventure into a world of unparalleled depth and danger with SquareSoft’s Vagrant Story. In this sweeping dungeon-crawling epic you play as Ashley Riot, a young assassin and spy for the organization known as Riskbreakers. Your goal is to unravel a deep and twisted plot and come to terms with the recent death of your wife and child. If this sounds a bit too cerebral never fear. Your path to recapturing your sense of humanity hinges on the destruction of countless vicious monsters and the exploration of dark and dangerous dungeons.
Looks like Vagrant Story will not be $9.99 like the other Square Enix games, but at a surprising $5.99.

I could say that about Xenogears...oh wait, I did already.

VS is hands down the superior title, IMO, and one of the few I'm sad we'll never see a sequel for since it ends on such an awesome note that leads itself into a possibility for such an easy sequel. Truly a masterpiece of PS1 RPG's.

Frisky, any idea of what PJ Shooter 2 is going to drop at? $10/15?

no problem man i figured some other folks here might not have it either and free is great price for dynamic themes.

with mod nation coming to psn would the game load times be cut down even more by having it on your harddrive?

actually vagrant story has the best graphics for ps1 by square
granted I will admit it is not a game for everyone but for those who like it, it is an amazing game

also of note front mission 3 was also $5.99 (also another tremendous game)

Agreed that it may be superior to Xeno now. Problem is that is like being superior to a 1 armed man in a tug off war contest. Both games were overrated back then and both have not aged well.

Sigh.... some people can't take a joke. Like I said to the guy complainin' about RE2, it's (VS) a freakin' 12 year old game, whadda want? ;)

I think VS is still ahead of its time for the gfx (smoothed (on PS2/3) it looks as good or better than a lot of PS2 games) the controls while clunky were ahead of their time, how many games from 1999 had a fully movable and not crappy camera (you can look at the ceiling if you want), the battle system has never been re-used since then being a hybrid of Parasite Eve's sphere system and timed button presses., but somehow it worked and worked very well when you learned how to use it effectively.

The seriously insane amount of weapon customization is unreal, the music is excellent (listening to it right now in fact), the story is so complex and compelling, you want to know how it ends and the ending is so ratcheted up that by the time its over you're ready to play the sequel. The only thing this game did wrong (if it's a bad thing) was come out ahead of its time, didn't get enough respect when it came out and most egregiously didn't get a sequel.

Just last night I finally bought the game guide for it, so I could have a complete customization guide as well as have an idea of what extras you can access when you get
the Rood Inverse
after beating the game.

Trust me there are other PS1 games that haven't aged half as gracefully as this game. And please learn to take a joke, ;) (I'm sure your not upset, but I honestly don't know hot to interpret your response totally) even though I'm critical about XG's (since it is much too epic for its own good), I don't take the piss out its fans, even though after playing the same thing they played, I still don't see why it gets as much love as it does, in fact I feel the same about Crono Cross, I don't care much for it either.

If you can play'em without putting them into the 2011 filter, I think there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. It's still a very vivid memory for me even though it's been 10 years since I played it last.

Anyway, just glad people have the option to replay these games that, IMO, still hold up to scrutiny pretty well, and also I believe it's also nice to let people see why Squaresoft was so revered back in the 90's, a company that could do no wrong, who released very few clunkers, and why people consider it their golden age as well.

So if I'm playing Resident Evil 2 and I want to play Claire's storyline first, how do I do that? I like Leon's mission and all, but they should have given players a choice as to who you play as first.

Is Vagrant Story another one of those "oh just hit me" turned based RPG's or is it more like Legend of Zelda gameplay?
