Which defunct game magazine do you miss the most?

i have fond memories of next-generation. it was around when i was in high school, so it might be a skewed memory, but im pretty sure it was good.

GameFan and Gamer's Republic, but Play fills the void very nicely. Its the only magazine that I will actually pay to get a subscription to.

No disrespect to your opinion or anything, but Play reads like it is written by bunch of 5th-graders. The content is unique, but jeez, do they even use grammar check? Anyway, I miss OPM the most. :(

I almost expected to see Hardcore Gamer magazine in this poll, but I guess they are still alive.

I got the first few issues, and then I realized they wanted some incredibly high subscription rate (like $22 or something for a year?) and never read it again.

I guess it's because no one talks about them and they get no exclusives that I thought they were dead.

i miss what egm used to be. theres nothing sadder than to see somethign that used to be so great be whittled down to an a.d.d version of its former luster. i loved those magazines back then and they were full of so much cool game stuff it took me ages to read it all and id keep them around even after the new ones came out. actually i think i still have a bunch of them at my dads house in a trunk somewhere. the damn magazine is anorexic compared to what tit used to be so yeah i know its still a running magazine but its not what it used to be. the reviews arent as great , the stories arent as interesting and the letters section is pretty stale at times.

i guess thats the worst thing about getting older nothing is ever the same or as good as it used to be. egm is smaller, pizza hutt pizza isnt as awesome as it used to be, tv is mostly lame reality shows and porn has way too much talking in it and not enough bangin. actually i guess the only good thing about nowdays is free internet porn but it sucks how peopel abuse the nets.

I miss Electronic Gaming Monthly. I know, its still out but I am talking about the 300 page monsters that they once put out. I get EGM for free (as I am sure most of us here do) until the end of the century more or less, and its good for the price. If they still had the 300 page issues I would actually *gasp* pay for my subscription myself.

I hate that title. Hardcore is so fucking gay, it sounds poser just by the name. I think we need to find a better name for gamers who love the gameplay, art style, etc. not just the title on the game.
I miss NeoMega myself. Pass that some Gamefan and some old EGM. It's thanks to their holiday buying guide way back I got the Saturn and ended up LOVING it. Also thanks to Ed Semirad's review on "Tempest 2000" I tried it out, never having played a Tempest and loved it as well. I also remember Ed's writing on playing FFVII, good stuff.

Next Gen, without a doubt.

I almost took a job there, but decided that I couldn't handle the move up north. The mag folded half a year later.

I miss those days... One issue was actually so thick that its weight made my wall-installed mailbox come loose.

Okay, so realistically it was probably the mailman's fault trying to cram the mag into the box, but it made for a great picture.

Official Dreamcast Magazine was awesome. Simply the best. Though out of that list, UGP. It does have a very similar staff to ODCM so the style was similar.

Easily Next Gen. It was one of those rare gaming magazines that actually contained articles worth reading. Sadly, I think I sold all of my Next Gen's to you Guile!

Ultra Gameplayers was the best gaming magazine ever. I used to read that thing cover-to-cover because the wirting was so good and funny, even on things I didn't care about in the least!

I believe you are right. :)

yeah that was a hell of a mag. loved all those demo disks that came with it and they even came with downloadable stuff if i recall like chu chu rocket.

From the list, Next Generation. But the magazines I miss the most are a couple old ones: Electronic Games (not EGM) and Joystiq.

Of course, this was before the internet era where there were lots of great magazines.

But I'd have to say Next generation and Ultra Gameplayers... they were both great.

I liked Next Generation because it was well written and had some interesting articles. Plus, I remember reading an article about the exploitation of female game characters and see a bit about 'Nude Raider' and the next thing I know, I'm on the internet searching for pics of Lara in the nude.

I liked Ultra Gameplayers for the good reading, through review scores, and the demo discs. Usually they had crappy games but they would have some sweet preview videos of games in great quality on there. And back then, it was great since most people still had 56K and videos on the net were low quality.

Also, I'd like to suggest PSM... the old PSM. Back when they were original and critical of the Playstation brand... before they became nothing more than the "Sony Power". I loved the hand drawn covers by comic book artists, excellent previews and reviews, and loved how involved the magazine seemed with the readers. Then the PS2 came out and they slowly morphed into crap.

Next Generation was a refreshing mag because it really didn't have a lot of the juvenile slant and jokes that almost every other mag had.

Next Generation and OPM. It was just a few months into my subscription that the mag folded, which was disappointing considering how much I enjoyed the few issues I got. OPM I've subscribed to for years and I was saddened to see that it was being closed so soon as it had definitely gotten better as time went on.

For me OPM, The Disc every month was great.

After Geting a PS3, I re-Subscribed on the very day they cancelled the magazine. Imangine my Surprise when I found out, and had to call Ziff Davis to get my money back.

Yep. Their demo discs were just a bonus to the awesome written content though. They were absolutely journalistic geniuses in that magazine. You can see this in UGP too. Unfortunately, I was too young when UGP was popular so I've only seen a few issues, but they are similar to ODCM in writing and quality, with a few of the same writers.

Next Gen.

Its the only mag I still keep all my issues of. Ive thrown away hundreds of EGMs, and OPMs and all that, but the Next Gens I always kept.

I was already an adult when I found Next Gen (around issue 12), but it was the first gaming publication that spoke to me like I was an adult. It made me feel that I wasnt the only kid who loved games that had grown into an adult that loved games.

And also they had the freshest layout and covers. Even the paper stock they used ruled. It was a high quality design light years ahead of something like Gamepro, which looked like vomit on a page.
And they had that eff you attitude cos they didnt fit right on the shelf with the other gaming mags. They were bigger, and better than those other mags.

I miss old EGM. Back in the snes, early N64 era. 400+ page december issues for the fucking win.

Gamefan!! At least, the early years of it. The first few years, that magazine had this fantastic amateurish, but incredibly enthusiastic charm to it. The articles and text were always cluttered, and the pages were littered with sprites and screens, and there were typos, and the whole thing was just wonderful. I never felt the same sort of disconnect with the Gamefan writers as I do with most game journalists. They were fanboys, you know? Truly enthusiastic.

Next Gen was good stuff, too, though, but very different. It was so sophisticated, so I definitely respected that about it.

Probably Gamefan. I remember them having pages full of microscopic text-- their mags were packed with everything.

GMR was probably the worst gaming mag ever.

My thoughts exactly - I enjoyed Gamefan because they came across as gamers who happened to write reviews, not journalists who happen to play games. Plus, they had a great sense of humor, and didn't take themselves too seriously. They were excited about games, and that enthusiasm was infectious.

Written by fanboys for fanboys. I loved it.

RIP Gamefan, quirks and all.;)
why is Expert Gamer/EGM2 not on the list?
That's what I'm wondering, I miss that magazine. It did strategy guides better than Tip & Tricks(which has become a joke now). Then they changed it into Gamenow, which was nothing but a EGM lite and people eventually caught on and stopped buying the magazine.

I also miss OPM, but only cause of the demo disc.

The only subscription I've had is for PSM which is obviously still alive and well.. I also got game informer but that was free with the GS card.. Didn't much care for it.

Next Generation did have some really great paper (content as well! ;) )

Gamefan had some of the best screen shots, layouts, and import coverage.

Next Gen's actually been relaunched as a website.

next-gen.biz

They're still writing for the same audience, us high school students and young adults who read the mag and have now grown up. They're more focused on business now, but it seems pretty good.
