[quote name='Scobie']I hate to be so cynical, but innovation to Nintendo has consistently meant accessories and props that are used in one or two games. I hope the Wii comes out like the DS did in the end, but so far I don't see much that lives up to the expectations that so many of us had last fall.
Nintendo is also the king of franchise-flogging. It's not necessarily a bad thing since their games are always so polished and playable, but speaking strictly personally, I got my fill of the Mario Party/Sports/Kart nonsense on the 'Cube. Adding waggle to Mario Baseball is not compelling enough to make me want to open my wallet.

What accessories are you talking about? For the GC, they had the bongos which were used for 3 games (more than most other music peripherals in the US - well the Guitar Hero guitar will be at 4 games for the PS2 by the end of the year and DDR pads). I guess there was the mic that came with Odama and Mario Party? Not sure if people expected that to be used a lot. For the N64, there was the rumble pak that was used a lot - maybe that weird pokemon GB cart thingy for Pokemon Stadium? For the Wii, they seem to be whipping out peripherals, but they haven't done much prior to that.
As far as franchise flogging, I really think Nintendo gets a bad rap for this. Now, the Mario Party games, yes, there are a lot of them.
Mario platformers - there was 1 on the N64, 1 on the GC (2 if you could Luigi's Mansion), and 1 on the Wii. If you count the Paper Mario series, then you can add 1 to each generation.
Zelda - 2 on N64, 2 on GC (I'm putting TP on the Wii), 1 so far on the Wii - expect it to have a 2nd before the end of the Wii
Metroid - 0 on N64, 2 on GC, 1 on Wii
DK - 1 on N64, 1 on GC (Jungle Beat), 0 on Wii
Warioware - 1 on GC, 1 on Wii
Mario Kart - 1 on N64, 1 on GC, 1 on Wii
Smash Bros - 1 on N64, 1 on GC, 1 on Wii
So we are getting 1-2 per generation of their major francises.
Look at other games/systems
Crash Bandicoot - 3 on PS1, 2 or 3 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 1+ on next gen
Spyro - 3 on PS1, 3 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 1+ on next gen
Splinter Cell - 4 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 2 on 360
Tomb Raider - 3 on PS1, 3 on PS2
Jak and Daxter - 4 on PS2
Ratchet&Clank - 4 on PS2
most of these have 3-4 per generation.
The thing is that Nintendo just has a lot more franchises.
Now throwing Mario into everything, I would agree as well, although would it be better if it was just Golf/Tennis/Soccer/Baseball vs. Mario Golf/Mario Tennis/Mario Soccer/Mario Baseball? Still, that isn't franchise flogging (maybe mascot flogging?)
Still, the Wii has been out for less than 1 year and the rest of this year looks pretty good to me with Metroid, Galaxy, Brawl, Battalion Wars, Nights, etc. Plus, real online play with Strikers, Madden, Live, etc.
As for not knowing what is coming in 2008, none of the systems have really said what is coming out in 2008 except for Sony, since a lot of their big games (MGS4, FFXIII won't be out until 2008). Microsoft only talked about 2007 games in their E3, except for RE5.
