Wii Are Screwed

The real test will be how many copies "hardcore" games sell.

The Wii will have a larger user base, but if a lot of it is non-gamers who bought it just for Wii Sports, Wii Fit etc. then that might reduce the impact some as those people aren't going to buy say a GTAIV port etc.

I don't think that will be the case personally, as I don't see the "non-gamer" being much of a chunk of the overall Wii user base.

I dont get why everyones complaining...

Its not like the Wii is for the Mainstream only now and just appeals to house wives and children... why do you guys think that?

Oh dear god. . .

Wait, have you played any of these games? Because I have. I played Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicle, that's not a game for casual gamer. I played Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Wii Fit and a bunch of other games for Wii. Just think about games that you could do on the Balance Board that you've never played the right way...Tony Hawk, SSX, T & C Surf 2008! Combine it with the remote and nunchuk and you've got a lot of possibilities that you've never thought of before.

As for what comes next?
Fire Emblem
Another Zelda game, because Twilight Princess doesn't really count
Mario 128 because Miyamoto swore to us that it would come out
Mario & Sonic at the Olympics looks good and could be Track & Field for Wii
NiGHTS looked pretty maybe not my type of game, but certainly for the hardcore SEGA heads

Nearly every press release that I posted to our site in June was about some third party developer making a Wii game. The Wii may very well be this generation's PS2, don't think that because the system appeals to masses that they'll abandon the true gamer, the person who buys a lot of games, not just this years Madden because the more successful they are the more time and resources they will devote to making games and successful games at that.

mmm.... i still wasn't able to get a wii and thats after how many month? 9 month? wow... f***k that.
i am not buying a wii as long as i have to wait in line for one console.

this generation of consoles is really opposing me to play at all.
one is not available to buy, the other one is just so expensive that its on the wishlist for 2009.

i guess i play my ds and ps2 then.
this generation of consoles is really opposing me to play at all.
one is not available to buy...
Have you really tried to get one? Myself and every single one of my close friends bought a Wii, all at different times/places. Almost every single one required a wait (a few of us got lucky). Sometimes you have to do a little work to get what you want...if that means waiting in line for a console, then so be it.

If you have waited in line only to have them sell out before you got to the front, well...get there earlier next time. ;)

Motherfucker, no Animal Crossing this year means the Wii is kicked out of my house. I will rebuy it for that game but nothing else unless Chibi Robo Wii is announced(Please God).

I got that issue in the mail today and read the article, and was a little disappointed to find out that you can't even eat the cake, because you can't use baking soda and you have to put straws in it to keep it from falling apart. What's the point of making something like that if you can't even eat it?
Personally, I'm dying to play Mario Galaxy, so I'll wait at least until then.

If the future game lineup doesn't have me more excited then, I'll throw it on Craig's list a week or two before X-mas when they'll no doubt be selling for more than they are now when teary eyed moms are desperate to find one for little Johnny.
you're not going to find one easily around the time Mario Galaxy comes out. Buy it before the Xmas season if you plan on getting one. They'll be scarce as hell and in ridiculous demand.
Do some of you people honestly think there's nothing post-Mario and Zelda? I feel bad for you. That's like saying there's nothing post Halo 3 and MGS4.
Apparently a lot of people think after Prime, Galaxy, and Brawl, Nintendo is just going to fire everybody and send out a press release saying "fuck it, after Mario Kart, we're done."

I think people are just anxious to see what they have lined up after that and dissapointed they have shown anything yet.

That, and I'm hoping they have some new games up their sleeves that aren't aimed at non-gamers or just sequels in tired franchises.

But I have faith in them to bring out some kickass stuff in 2008, or else I would have sold the non-HD, dust gathering paper weight already.

You misread. I have a Wii, and was saying that if there is nothing else announced that I want to play after I finish Galaxy in November that I'll likely sell my Wii on Craig's list right when demand is high as you note.

I hate to be so cynical, but innovation to Nintendo has consistently meant accessories and props that are used in one or two games. I hope the Wii comes out like the DS did in the end, but so far I don't see much that lives up to the expectations that so many of us had last fall.

Nintendo is also the king of franchise-flogging. It's not necessarily a bad thing since their games are always so polished and playable, but speaking strictly personally, I got my fill of the Mario Party/Sports/Kart nonsense on the 'Cube. Adding waggle to Mario Baseball is not compelling enough to make me want to open my wallet.

The stab at the casual gaming market has gone way better than I ever expected, but I think a more relevant stat than strictly console sales is games sold per console. My guess is the Wii could very well have the lowest attachment rate of any of this generation's consoles.

And so the continued sell-outs almost seem paradoxical when the software library just isn't there to back it up. Save for a few interesting titles like Mario Galaxy, the near future doesn't look all that much better to a guy like me.

I went from owning almost 70 GameCube games to having two Wii games on my shelf right now. Factoring in Xbox Live Arcade titles, I've already had about 50 games for the 360 in just over 6 months. I'm a gamer, and I go where the games are.
I hope the Wii comes out like the DS did in the end, but so far I don't see much that lives up to the expectations that so many of us had last fall.
.
That's my hope as well. The DS was shit it's first year, and has since taken off and became one of my all time most played platforms.

If not for the success of the DS, I'd have not bought a Wii as the GC pretty much sucked balls after the first couple of years.

It's really up to third parties to step up. That's what's happened on the DS, with great games like Castlevania, Rocket Slime, Final Fantasy and on and on.

Nintendo can't put out enough games to keep a serious gamer happy, especially when many of their games are the franchise spinoffs like Mario Sports, Mario Party etc. which I never cared for, or casual gamer stuff like Brain Age/Wii Fit.
I think that is part of Nintendo's plan, they will release all the big games in the first year to please their base. The Nintendo fanboys buy it up and then the third parties see the success and make their games come out after Nitnendo already released their huge games. That was the third party games have a chance to sell and Nitnendo has all their big names out, but still enough franchises (Animal Crossing, F-Zero, DK, ect.) to continue to please the "hardcore" gamers.

whoops. right on :)
My guess is the Wii could very well have the lowest attachment rate of any of this generation's consoles.
Really? I'm up to seven games so far after purchasing a Wii in January. I'll probably be up to 15 or so by the end of the year if I can afford all the ones I want. And I'm really picky about what games I purchase. There might be two games I'm interested in on the PS3 that are out right now...maybe four by the end of the year.

Of course, I realize I'm speaking only for myself and not all other gamers...

What accessories are you talking about? For the GC, they had the bongos which were used for 3 games (more than most other music peripherals in the US - well the Guitar Hero guitar will be at 4 games for the PS2 by the end of the year and DDR pads). I guess there was the mic that came with Odama and Mario Party? Not sure if people expected that to be used a lot. For the N64, there was the rumble pak that was used a lot - maybe that weird pokemon GB cart thingy for Pokemon Stadium? For the Wii, they seem to be whipping out peripherals, but they haven't done much prior to that.

As far as franchise flogging, I really think Nintendo gets a bad rap for this. Now, the Mario Party games, yes, there are a lot of them.
Mario platformers - there was 1 on the N64, 1 on the GC (2 if you could Luigi's Mansion), and 1 on the Wii. If you count the Paper Mario series, then you can add 1 to each generation.
Zelda - 2 on N64, 2 on GC (I'm putting TP on the Wii), 1 so far on the Wii - expect it to have a 2nd before the end of the Wii
Metroid - 0 on N64, 2 on GC, 1 on Wii
DK - 1 on N64, 1 on GC (Jungle Beat), 0 on Wii
Warioware - 1 on GC, 1 on Wii
Mario Kart - 1 on N64, 1 on GC, 1 on Wii
Smash Bros - 1 on N64, 1 on GC, 1 on Wii

So we are getting 1-2 per generation of their major francises.

Look at other games/systems
Crash Bandicoot - 3 on PS1, 2 or 3 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 1+ on next gen
Spyro - 3 on PS1, 3 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 1+ on next gen
Splinter Cell - 4 on PS2/GC/Xbox, 2 on 360
Tomb Raider - 3 on PS1, 3 on PS2
Jak and Daxter - 4 on PS2
Ratchet&Clank - 4 on PS2

most of these have 3-4 per generation.
The thing is that Nintendo just has a lot more franchises.

Now throwing Mario into everything, I would agree as well, although would it be better if it was just Golf/Tennis/Soccer/Baseball vs. Mario Golf/Mario Tennis/Mario Soccer/Mario Baseball? Still, that isn't franchise flogging (maybe mascot flogging?)

Still, the Wii has been out for less than 1 year and the rest of this year looks pretty good to me with Metroid, Galaxy, Brawl, Battalion Wars, Nights, etc. Plus, real online play with Strikers, Madden, Live, etc.

As for not knowing what is coming in 2008, none of the systems have really said what is coming out in 2008 except for Sony, since a lot of their big games (MGS4, FFXIII won't be out until 2008). Microsoft only talked about 2007 games in their E3, except for RE5.
What accessories are you talking about?
There were the bongos and the mic which you mentioned, plus the dance pad which was only used for DDR Mario Mix. At least they packed them in with the games and didn't charge more. This is also the company that did the GameBoy camera and printer, R.O.B., the lightgun, and the e-card reader. Nintendo loves to add accessories that end up being used with only a small handful of games.
As far as franchise flogging, I really think Nintendo gets a bad rap for this.
I don't count significant modifications or departures from the past as franchise flogging. For instance, Metroid Prime felt fresh and interesting. Same with Super Mario Sunshine and LoZ: The Wind Waker. Stuff like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: DD, and all the Mario Party Games, however, to me represents a pretty serious flog. Even LoZ: Twilight Princess, for as much fun as I got out of it, wasn't a real progression from OoT.

I would love to see more unexpected titles like Chibi-Robo and Pikmin, both of which brought incredibly memorable experiences and helped to make the 'Cube my favorite console last gen, probably even out of all other consoles to date.

My point is that Nintendo, like other publishers, is trying to put out products that will turn a profit. I guess the mystique of Nintendo has kinda worn off for me, which is sad. I'll still be there for the big hits and for another Pikmin or Chibi-Robo, but I won't be buying any of the B-list games this gen, and probably will even pass on some of the A-listers like Metroid.
Of course, I realize I'm speaking only for myself and not all other gamers...
Yep. I've had my Wii since launch day and all I've bought is Zelda and Super Paper Mario, and SPM I bought used so they got no cash from me for that one.
maybe you should stop playing wii sport then
Maybe he has. I haven't touched it in months, and probably have 5 hours or so put into it total (though others have played it a good bit at parties etc.).

The novelty on that war off for me very fast. Tennis isn't much fun without being able to move your characters, baseball was too dumbed down, boxing didn't control well.

Golf was ok, but the controls could be too flukey on putts.

Bowling is fun, but just like the real thing, it doesn't excite me much.

Just not my cup of tea I guess.

More people with the "I hate Nintendo franchises, but I still bought a Wii, and now I hate the Wii because I'm ignoring everything on it, including the Nintendo franchises."

Listen, I can only stab my eyes with a pencil twice, once per pupil. After that, I really don't have any more eyes with which to assault with lead and wood. I don't know if you people think I'm a potato - which, I suppose, I very well could be - but this sort of rhetoric is just ridiculous, and continues to mount further higher the little shrine I have devoted to human stupidity by the day.

I'm not even going to go into other arguments that aren't being aimed at Sony and Microsoft, when they very well could be.

Honestly I enjoy my Wii its not my most played console but then I'm awash with a ton of titles competing for my very limited gaming time. I am however playing it semi regularly. Paper Mario, LoZ, Wii Sports, Elebits and even Wii Play has one or two little games in it worth playing.

Heck I even went and rebought some gamecube stuff so I could play mario sunshine(skipped it was really burned out on mario titles for a long time). Fact is I"m really enjoying everything I have on the system. When I beat those yeah I might be bored with it for a bit till something new comes out but thats virtually every system that comes out.

I guess not. LIke you said earlier, sell it and move on to your greener pastures. No use hanging out in this forum and whining about something you don't like. You're just wasting your time.

Nah, too much fun annoying people like you. ;)

And like I said, I want to play Mario and Metroid before I think about selling it as those were two of the big reasons I bought the console in the first place.

In the end I'll probably end up hanging on to the Wii just for the 2 or 3 big first party games a year, and just pick up a 360 to be my main system. I'll only sell it if it turns out like the GC was after it's first couple of years were there seemed to only be 1 must buy game for me every year or more toward the end of it's lifecycle.

I was just hoping the Wii would be good for more than the GC, and it hasn't panned out yet. But hopefully third parties will get off this mini game fix and start putting out some real games next year--like what happened with the DS.

But still, I don't see the Wii ever being able to put out enough games per year to keep a serious gamer satisfied.

Shouldn't we just have a "bitch about Wii here" thread sticky at the top.
Just so we don't have to shift through repeated threads of complaints over and over.
I hate to be so cynical, but innovation to Nintendo has consistently meant accessories and props that are used in one or two games.
so Steel Battalion was on the GCN???

I guess Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars, and the Halo game by Peter Jackson can't be considered flogging? They're trying to have as varied a lineup as possible, if you don't like variety, which is the spice of life, then go play elsewhere. Admittedly, I don't play my Wii often, but after playing the games at E3, I know I'll be picking it up a lot more with the second generation of games coming beginning next month.

Believe me when I say this, when asked about Halo 3 and what I saw from Microsoft's presentation, I said, "It looks beatiful, the level we saw had some nice visuals and everything in the jungle looked vibrant and lush, but it's just more Halo" which is fine if you like Halo, but if you're just not a fan, then it doesn't do a thing for you. Quite frankly I'd take Metroid Prime 3 over Halo 3 anyday, if only because it's a new experience, not just a redressed game. That said, Halo 3 will be more successful and good for them, I'm sure it offers a great game, but much like you don't feel the Wii delivers or will deliver for you, Halo 3 doesn't deliver for me.
so Steel Battalion was on the GCN???
Ouch.

I'll add this, too: pack-ins are NOT the same as add-ons. We all know the truism: if it ain't in the box, it ain't supported. It's true, and it's true across the board. And ya know what? The ol' waggle-mote? In the box. If A = B, and B = C, then ...

Yeah too bad the Wii is not that good for you and doesn't satisfy you. That really sucks for you. Hopefully some real games will come that will be appealing to you.

And if not I'll sell it. Not the end of the world either way. I just hope it pans out for me as I've been a long time Nintendo fan.
I don't necessarily think that's true. Think back to when we were kids growing up with Nintendo. The majority of us had our games library limited to our parents' wallets, not our own. On top of which, a small handful of games could hold us over for years back then.

Now we've grown up and become spoiled on the realities of our own gaming bank, expecting more and more from a company who at the same time we applaud for holding true to their traditional ideals. Then when they DO branch out, we feel left out of the equation.

I don't feel that way about it. I believe Nintendo is sharing OUR world, the world we grew up with, with a wider range of people, and giving the next generation of gamers something some of us never had:

The ability to share their growing heritage with their parents and opponents worldwide.

I know im the minority here with the rest of this wii fan boys (not an insult, just an unfortunate title), but im mad bored with my wii. the only game i bought so far is zelda which is mad good, but everything else looks like for people who dont really play games. maybe im ignorant, maybe im saying something that has already been said because im too lazy to read 5 pages of posts. but the wii is bored the hell out of me and the stuff shown at E3 doesnt wow me too much. I want to love the wii, its just not happening...yet. maybe i need to wait until smash brothers or a kickass 100 hour rpg comes out.

Nintendo loyalty did me in there. That and the competition being ridiculously overpriced at $400-600.

But like I said, from the DS and the Wii, I learned my lesson about buying hardware at launch and will wait until at least the first price drop from now on.

OMG yea the Wii is a freakin' carnival simulator. That piece of crap took up space around my house, especially my couch (It messed up my ass-groove!)

I had to challenge the Wii to a bet that I could throw a hula-hoop around a chimney. It was the only way I could get that carnie to leave.

Haha, I loved that episode of the Simpsons.

That has to be one of the funniest episodes.

yeah, sure is.

Haha, yea. It isnt that bad.

I'm acctually fully enjoying it right now. Still havent picked up TP (looking forward to that!) and fighting my GF with pokemon on the TV (with stadium) is lots of fun. And the Vote Channel is always great for some fun. . .

It's really a good couple system. (Until SSBB comes out... *drool* and Galaxies)
