We've been wondering how Sega would handle the weird lock-on capabilities of Sonic & Knuckles on the Virtual Console. According to the PEGI ratings board, we'll soon find out: the Genesis Sonic 3 continuation has been rated for Virtual Console release. It showed up on the ESRB months ago, but a new rating suggests forward motion, maybe.

The cynical view of someone who has seen a VC game before dictates that the release will feature only the new levels available on the standalone cartridge, with no way to access the extra content made available by combining the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge with Sonics 2 and 3. But maybe Sega will surprise us!
Skitchin' and Road Rash were fuckin' terrible, Beef.

We need some Roadblasters, or Battletoads/Double Dragons up ins.

...And you need your Axem Rangers back just for the SMRPG mood.
Your face is fuckin' terrible.

Road Rash is rad.

Unless I'm mistaken, the lock-on technology would require separate ROMs to emulate, since there's no way to mesh two VC downloads together and say "make it work". If the Shop Channel allowed for free download via past purchases (as in, if you bought Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles, you could download Sonic 2 with Knuckles for free), that would make sense., but I'm not sure if the channel is capable of doing that.

If you released Sonic 3 + Sonic and Knuckles as a separate title, there'd be zero incentive to buy the games separately since you get an extra character and twice the levels out of it that way.

It is worth mentioning again that the lock-on versions are available in the Sonic Mega Collection. It's still possible to play them on the Wii.

With perfect emulation too! There are also ROM hacks that allow you to merge games to play Sonic and Knuckles go grocery shopping or whatever you get when you lock them on. I'm not sure, but I think Wii hackers have already released such a hack for a VC channel.
I was never able to find a strategy guide for SMRPG back then, so I just wrote in to Nintendo. They were nice enough to give me answers to every question I asked, including the location of the Lazy Shells, Grate Guy's Casino, and advice on how to get Mario's accessory for 100 Super Jumps.

...They sure seemed a lot cooler back then than they do now. :/
That's pretty nice of them.

For anyone who wants to know anything from the guide, let me know and I'll look it up, it's right next to me and getting ready to play.

I've played too much Super Mario RPG back then that I can't justify buying it again, especially with my backlog.

Also, some naked drunk guy just walked into my apartment a few minutes ago. I think he took my roomate's boxers. This is why you should lock the door.
Dont bring up Phantasy Star or I'll bring up Rock Band
Pffft.

Rock Band = Game + A bunch of accessories that won't fit in your home

Phantasy Star = Game only.
OMFG Super Mario RPG
And they didn't gouge us an extra 100 points! Good job Nintendo. Now I hope every Wii owner purchases this so that Super Mario RPG 2 is made.
Even at 9 dollars I don't think Nintendo would be ''gouging'' you to play SMRPG. ;)
Now I hope every Wii owner purchases this so that Super Mario RPG 2 is made.
Super Mario RPG 2 = Paper Mario 64

I'd buy Mario RPG, but I have the cart, so I don't really need it.

I'm totally buying My Aquarium, though. That is EXACTLY the sort of thing I have been wanting on Wii for a while. A relaxing non-game application. And only $5, totally going for it.

I only played for a little bit last night (SMRPG, of course). and I'm in the Forest Maze. God, I LOVE that area. The music is great. When Mallow/Mario start running from the arrows..I don't know, but I love that art. Bower is a great boss, too. 'NUK NUK NUK!

I think my favorite part of the game is the whole Booster Castle into the Booster/Toadstool Wedding. Of course, Queen Valentina needs to be mentioned just because.

Yeah the chapter of the game with Booster , although it's easily one of the longest chapters of the game , is probably one of the most entertaining.
I just got the snes cart for 2 dollars at a flea market
Jesus Christ that's a steal!!! Don't you just love people who don't know what they have?

Mallow and Geno are Square characters.

God, I'd love a game where Mallow and Geno made some kind of comeback. I'd love for a TRUE Mario RPG sequel made by Square-Enix..!!

Nonononono. It's an awesome game, and I love the Paper Mario series just as much as Super Mario RPG, but nonononono.

Exactly.
Super Mario RPG 2 would have Mallow and Geno in it. :nottalking:

I agree!
Man, I'm in the mood to play Super Mario RPG. I can't wait until this weekend. OT, but did that rumor from EGM ever pan out? The one about Super Mario RPG appearing on the DS.
Nonononono. It's an awesome game, and I love the Paper Mario series just as much as Super Mario RPG, but nonononono.
haha, I understand. I was just saying...that's what they were going for (and had initially planned to call it).

I assume these rankings are from this week due to My Aquarium being in there - unless My Aquarium was released outside of the US last week along with SMRPG?

As far as I'm concerned, Super Mario RPG should never EVER leave the top 20, in fact top 10, better yet: Top 5. Though, in reality, it should never leave the top 3

hey I did my Part. I haven't even had time to play past the opening but I maybe my buy. I'm this close to just leaving my Wii with Mario RPG on just so my useage stats will boost it.
Speaking of that game, it saddens me to see that Frat Party games is higher on that list then MLaaK :wall:
Well, it is half the cost, such things usually have considerable impact.

GUYS! Super Mario RPG finally came out! I'm so pumped that it did too. I can't wait until tonight. I'm downloading that bitch and playing some of it REAL BRIEF!
I really hope it soars in popularity. It's good to see it number 2, although I wish it was number 1. Still, I guess you can't expect it to beat a traditional Mario game.

Well, I wanted to download and start SMRPG. Nintendo, however, had other ideas.

Stupid server problems.

Guess I should get a points card.

I used to rent the hell out of SMRPG from the local video store. Beat that game a few times while they were there. Then, they closed down.

Got a yard-sale copy a few years back for a couple bucks. Sadly, like many SNES games, the save file battery is crap. Hitting the reset button or jostling the cart while it's in the system will drop the saves.
Speaking of that game, it saddens me to see that Frat Party games is higher on that list then MLaaK :wall:
it saddens me to see Frat Party games anywhere on that list. As lame as I consider MLaK, Pong Toss is lamer.

You can replace the battery, just open the cart, its going to be a standard cell type that you can get in any electronics department.

This week, Europe got Spelunker - NES/600 Points, DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure - SNES/900 Points, Chase H.Q. - TurboGrafx-16/600 Points, and Ys I & II - TurboGrafx-CD/800 Points.

what are you kidding me? Pong Toss is King! I can now play Beer Pong without the only good reason to play beer pong. Virtual Beer Water for everyone!

Thanks for the heads up.

Super Mario rpg is probably the signature snes game for me ... many rentals. My brother and I still play it on the snes actually and it will be nice to have it on the vc as well. Hopefully, they'll release more of the classic snes rpgs.

Rothgar, I might be the only person in the universe who might believe this: But I do think they will. I think all of those great games that made the SNES so amazing WILL be on the VC one day, as well as the other games that made each of these classic gaming systems so great.

I understand the world is pointing and laughing at me, but I have hope...and that's all I got :[

It's worse when you consider what I'm pointing at you.

Or is it...

better?
