At least it's a game that they worked on in 3 months rather than 3 years, I can't imagine anything more disappointing than spending that much time on something and then have it trashed by reviewers. I'd probably still pick it up if it were 500 points rather than 1000.

Hopefully Epicenter Studios next game is good. It's a shame to see their first game being reviewed so poorly, since one of the developers is a CAG and all.

Hey guys,

So yeah, as lilboo and others said, Critters is my studio's first title. And that review sucks. I know, I know...reviews are what they are, but that guy clearly just didn't care for the game at all. We've gotten quite a few good reviews too. Such as:
http://www.cheatcc.com/wii/rev/critterroundupreview.html
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/05/21/wii-fanboy-review-critter-round-up/
http://www.ngimedia.org/news/review-critter-round-up-for-wii/2009/

A game like this is either something you want to have fun with, or you can look at the 'cutsy' graphics and 'simple' gameplay and automatically decide that as a reviewer, you're way too CORE for it.

Really, I was just hoping for mid-7's for reviews. I feel comfortable knowing that given our timeframe and resources, we delivered the best possible game, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

As for the price point, well, I guess $10 means something different to different people, and I'll leave it at that... :)

By the way, our next game is the Wii full-retail Firefighting game. We've got a good budget and timeframe, and some really talented people cranking away. You should be hearing more about it as we get closer to having 'showable' pieces.

I think the $10 price really is what makes the game undesirable and the sad part is ITS NOT YOUR FAULT. I could see myself somewhat liking the game, it's just $10 is too much to TRY something IMO.

Now a firefighting game sounds good. ^_^

Can't wait for all the Wii firefighting jokes. I can hear it now, "I can fight forest fires with my wii."

Apparently, a LostWinds 2 is comin' out

The Strong Bad game sounds interesting...hopefully it's more than just a concept I'm fond of, come a month from now (when it's out)

And my pick for next week, as well as probably others', is Toki Tori, which I have a good hunch about

Wish I knew when World of Goo would come out though...now that looks good, like better than a undeservng no-date for a game, game

That's fair, thanks for the explanation roland, and thanks also for those copies for the contest.

I think we all sometimes forget that there's often limited time and budgets on these projects, I know I do even though I've had to shoot a lot of my own short films on similar constraints and gotten lambasted by judges (luckily in most film festivals, the scores are not disclosed). I think it adds some difficulty when games are released at different prices and obviously some have more money/time/resources than others at the same price point.

The next game you're making sounds interesting, be sure to keep posting and letting us know any updates, and hopefully we won't bash you too hard.

No posts at all on the 24th? Boo isn't going to like that. :nottalking:

Does anyone know if the fact that Monday is Memorial Day will affect the update? Will it still be on Monday? Get pushed back to Tuesday? Not happen, forcing us to wait yet another week for Dr. Mario?

We'll get games on Monday. Despite the fact that we get a lot of garbage, we have almost always had updates every Monday.

I really hope we get Dr Mario :(

I would be upset. Very.

Here's hoping for some decent VC games!

Given that the game is (presumably) already in English for the European WiiWare launch, it shouldn't be too hard for them to bring it out here.

Of course, that's the same logic that people use for Earthbound/Mother Zero, and we all know how that went...

Is it just me, or is the shop channel slow? Every other channel with internet use are really fast for me, but the shop channel is terrible; it makes 'just browsing' a pain.

Anyone else have this, or is it me?

It's not terribly slow for me, but not even close to the browser's speed. It's probably because you have to access the server for the Shop, and there's more to load than votes and Miis.

Sweet my wii hasn't been able to go online all week.
With my luck dr. mario and earthbound will come out tomarrow.

According to Gamefaqs (Not the forums the main Wii page) Dr. Mario AND Pokemon Ranch is coming out tomorrow. Do I trust Gamefaqs, fuck no. On the other hand there is hope that they could be right.

I don't believe it. Nintendo hasn't even wanted to realease one first party game, and there's no way in hell they'll release two at the same time. Though, I guess if they want to stick to that "support 3rd party" crap, I guess it could be possible.

I just want my Toki Tori and Dr. Mario damnit.

GameSpot and IGN said Dr. Mario would be out last Monday, and that clearly didn't work out.

It'd be fantastic if they were right...but it'd also be one of the first times in ages that GameFAQs actually got something correct. ;)

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

May 26, 2008
This week's Wii-kly Update pretty much covers the full spectrum. Maybe you'll want to blast away with an arsenal of old-school weapons. But then again, three-day weekends are a good time to relax. So maybe you'll take a wild road trip or settle in for some table tennis. And if you overdo it, we have a physician standing by.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Dr. Mario® Online Rx (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): The doctor is in! Mario™ takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you'll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world. Feel like challenging a friend who doesn't have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you'd like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote™ controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): It's time for some good old family fun, and what's more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn't matter if you're an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park. Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren't enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready.

Virtual Console™

City Connection™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, Tobacco Reference, 500 Wii Points): Based on the arcade hit, a young man born in California sets out to tour famous sites and cities around the world. As he drives the highways surrounding these locations, the road is painted white as proof of his visit. Only once all sections of the road have been painted will he move on to the next location in his world tour. Not surprisingly, the local police will chase the driver and do their best to stop him from completing his goal. In addition, cats roam the highways and spikes lie in wait for unsuspecting drivers. To combat these dangers, the driver's customized car can jump, fire cans of oil and collect balloons to warp to a new stage. It's the ultimate road trip.

Metal Slug (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen - Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1996 by SNK, Metal Slug is a side-scrolling military-action game. Players control Marco and Tarma, both members of the special-ops force Team Peregrine Falcon (commonly known as Team PF), and battle their way through stage after stage of intense action. The goal is to try to overthrow General Morden and win back the stolen weapon, the Metal Slug. Players must blast through waves of enemies and machines (while also jumping over any obstacles in the way) to advance through the stages. It's not as hopeless as it might sound, though—weapons such as heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers and flamethrowers, as well as the Metal Slug itself (which appears frequently in the game), will make the battle easier. Take on General Morden with a friend to lighten your load and ramp up the excitement even more.

Well there's the Dr. Mario everyone's been waiting for.

Metal Slug would be awesome, but isn't on the anthology that came out for the Wii around launch?

Metal Slug is on MSA. Various control schemes and whatnot. The only possible reason to get this one is if it had 480p support, which I doubt it does, considering past NeoGeo titles don't. Some of them at least.

4 game week! I really wanted Toki Tori, so I'm disappointed, but I guess Dr. Mario will do.
..same here

Dr. Mario! YES!

That settles it. Nintendo gets $10 of my money this week. :D

The Table Tennis game is probably safe to pass on, unless it ends up being an unexpected gem; all I know now is I'm not too interested in playing as Mom, Dad, Sarah, or Billy.

City Connection looks like it could be fun, but given that I don't have any extra Wii points I'm going to pass on that and just get $10 worth.
Well there's the Dr. Mario everyone's been waiting for.

It is, and GameStop's still got the anthology new for $20 (or did back in February, at least). That $20 gets you seven games and some bonus features like art galleries and interviews.

I love the Metal Slug series and I'd recommend it to anyone...but it just makes more sense to buy the anthology than get the Virtual Console version.
WTF is City Connection?!?
An awesome game. However, I'm not buying it because I have to be a bit picky with my points.

Family Ping Pong,

At 500 points, it seems like a good price. However I won't be getting it. It needs Mii Support. Mommy Daddy Billy and Sarah? Come on. It looks like it's fun, if you enjoy ping pong. At 500 points, you really can not say it's an unfair price. This is more tempting than Critter Round-Up because of the price difference alone.

At least we will be getting Dr Mario AND have the ability to send demos to our friends ^___^
I have 10 blocks of memory labeled "?". Is this what happens when a VC download fails? Is it safe to delete?
I'm PRETTY SURE (Not completely) that they are safe to delete. I'd wait for confirmation by someone else or calling Nintendo, which at this time, should take about 5 minutes.

Boo, you should get Dr. Mario in the title somehow. Maybe shorten Virtual Console to VC?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ1oA-QBflI

Drive a car around and paint the city. It was actually pretty fun.
It's not an unfair price, but that video makes it look a lot like Wii Sports Tennis...which we all already own. Even for $5, I don't see anything there to sell me on the game, or to make it look more tempting than Critter Round-Up. Roland, you absolutely win this round.

Looking at those posts and some of the comments on Kotaku, it seems like people who played the game liked it. City Connection has never appeared on my radar before, but I'll have to consider it now.

After doing some research, there are apparently a few minor emulation problems with the games (the screen doesn't flash when bosses take damage, for one) and there are mid-game load times. That said, I'd still suggest the Anthology over the Virtual Console release. I own the game and nothing about it has ever struck me as being "wrong" like that, though the non-GameCube control schemes are a bit lacking. That's the worst I can say about the title, though.
I have 10 blocks of memory labeled "?". Is this what happens when a VC download fails? Is it safe to delete?
Have you had any downloads fail?

It's about damn time NoA. I can't be mad though. This is probably my favorite VC/Wii Ware update ever. I never imagined Family Ping Pong would come out so fast despite already being in English.

Toki Tori will probably be next week. Having two big games at the same time probably didn't make a lot of sense to them.

If they're releasing Metal Slug, then that whole argument for Mega Man not coming out is thrown out the window. I think NoA really enjoys seeing us suffer.
