Wii Super Paper Mario $30 @ EBGames (requires trip to Best Buy)

Zorn

CAGiversary!
This involves going to both Best Buy and EBgames. Here's what you do:

First, print off two of the "$5 off any Wii game" coupons here: http://img452.imageshack.us/my.php?image=coupons1hf5.jpg

Then, go into Best Buy, and pick up Open Season and Far Cry: Instincts. These games are both $19.99, and if you use the $5 off coupons on them they are $15 each. Note that you may have to buy one at the customer service counter then buy the other one at the regular register since the same person might not let you use 2 coupons at once. Plus as a bonus, if you're a RewardZone member, you get the points on those games.

Then go to EBgames, they have a promotion going on until 4/15 where if you trade in any 2 Wii games, you get one for free, maximum value $49.99. So you trade in your two newly acquired $15 games and walk out with a $50 Super Paper Mario. All done!

Sure, it takes going to two stores, but if where you live is anything like me, the EBgames and Best Buy are basically right next door to each other.

Surprisingly, there are NO used copies of Far Cry or Open Season at the Gamestop near where I dorm, but there were still cheap copies at Best Buy. I'm surprised no one tried to do this trade yet, until tomorrow for me.
Has anyone tried just buying these two games at a Gamestop/EB and turn around and trade them in? I mean it's not as cheap as the best buy deal but it still saves like $10. I know it varies from store to store but I just want to get an idea of the type of reaction I can expect.
Thanks for the link. It seems like it all depends on who is working when you try it. I know who will let me do this though, now I just hope they are working tomorrow.

Try not to do it to the same guy, or they might just refuse to take your trade in if the employee knows you're blatantly ripping him off. Believe me, I know, as in I asked if I could do it while I was explaining the details, and he told me I couldn't do it. Fortunately, he saved me money, as I bought the games from Best Buy with the coupons and traded those in to another Gamestop. And try to act stupid as if you didn't know they were $20.

another reminder to you CAG's looking for a real wii case for your wii sports. some targets still have the activision 'living the game' dvd in the white case. the malls with gamestops have adjoining targets, so after confirming that the deal would go through, i opened up the sealed, just bought target games (far cry and open season), and placed their manuals and discs into the white dvd cases (also care of target, costing me only $0.01). voila - two new wii cases for me after the trade-in. gamestop and ebgames didn't notice.

i looked up the 9-digit inventory number, and it's 207 00 0794. they're in the storeroom now, not on the floor - i had to ask an employee to grab them. there were more than 8 in the target i went to.

If they try to say 'we know it's new', I'd be like you have a system right there. Why not open the thing up, and put it in for like 2 seconds, then pop it back out. Or, just do what you guys do with some new games and just open them up.
Besides, wouldn't people be happy to get a "New" Used game?
Because there are a LOT of stupid people out there, many of whom will walk out of Wal Mart with an armload of 20 games (don't ask how), haul them next door, and try to trade them in.

If Wal Mart comes to collect, Gamestop is the one liable (same for pawn shops, by the way). This risk, along with the fact that your trading in a new game most likely means that you are taking advantage of them in some way, is (I think) a fairly good reason for this policy. I'm not a Gamestop lover by ANY means, but in this situation I understand (while still frustrated by) their policy.

I used to frequent pawn shops all over Missouri and talked to a lot of owners - they would tell story after story of idiots who would come into their shops with stacks of new/sealed DVD's. They always turned them down for the same reason, and called the cops as the person was leaving.
Funny you should mention this. I was in EB tonight buying a used Open Season (seems abundant) and a new Far Cry (used seem hard to find for some reason). As I was doing that some shady looking guy came in with 3 new Wii remotes - still with the plastic stickers on them and straps wrapped up. These were just like the new "used" ones Gamecrazy is selling (they come from their Wii Play rental games). He put three on the counter along with his ID then went and played one of the demo systems. The manager waved a hand over them and said "After this, we don't need any more of these". The guy got about $40 in CASH and left. The whole thing was very suspicious but the other 2 guys working there didn't seem to care. I mean, the manager could have refused them but he didn't. And it's not like there isn't 4 other stores within a few miles the guy could go to. I'm just really curious as to where they came from.

Anyway, the "new" Far Cry at first they couldn't find. Then they found it in a "used" sleeve with a trade-in date of 4/3. Funny, because that is the same day I traded in a used version. If I hadn't been buying the games to flip for the deal I would have been pretty pissed about them selling me a used one as new (their inventory showed they only had 1 new one and no used so what happened was they must have given someone the new disc with a used purchase). Of course no offer of a discount or anything. The disc is mint so it "looked" new, but the one I traded in looked pretty new so I'm sure it was the same one... No big deal because I'm exploiting the deal, but their general incompetance was a bit troublesome.

I took those games to another store and had no problem trading them in for a preorder. The guy even called another store and asked if they could do preorders and he was told they could. It makes sense - they are always badgering people for preorders, so why wouldn't they want to take them with this deal? It seems better than handing out new games - preorders are money they keep while you have no product and many people probably forget to pick things up (lord knows they don't let you know beyond the occasional call from Aeris the day before a game comes out).

Anyway, I was looking at the preorder sheet and this time I thought I'd reserve something longer term (that I can switch to Mario Galaxy or Metroid later). They had the Simpson's game with a Nov release. Also, NiGHTS with a November release. But I decided on Mario and Sonic: Olympic Games, which they also have for November (and I might actually want if it turns out to be decent). I asked why they didn't have the "big 3" for preorder and his reason was that if they offered those now they would get TOO MANY preorders for them and not be able to fill them. So those will only be available to preorder for a short period before release. That's an interesting explanation I haven't heard before (they always say Nintendo didn't give them a SKU for it - which makes no sense given some of the other games they do take preorders for).

May try this one out, seems like a great deal. Thanks OP!

Question though before I do: Is there a way to check if Best Buy has these 2 games in stock?

open season

type in your zip code and you're set.

i can't find 'far cry' on the website. find your local store's phone number and call up. also, i recommend you call for 'open season' as well - i've had times where the online availability is wrong. given nowadays gas prices, better to be safe than sorry.

Awesome deal. Luckily I was able to do it, five dollar off coupon and all. Got my copy of Super Pario Mario for 32 and some change.
I'd love to do it for preorders, but I don't feel like spending all the money and time doing it.

Thanks phattsoe. Yes, I may try and give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. May save time and gas.

I didn't see this posted anywhere else, but I saw Meijer had Farcry clearanced to 16.99. They weren't in the glass game section, but in the aisle with the other cheap games. Mine had a couple copies.

Gah. I'm starting to hate this deal. I'm tempted now to go out and snag another 2 sets of these games and pick up Elebits and WarioWare today even though I really don't have time. Awful.

EDIT: Well maybe I don't have to worry about it. The stores the website showed as having stock (which I confirmed yesterday) are now showing OOS.

LOL, the 6 Best Buy's near me are all showing Unavailable for this .... I was up last Friday and they still had it marked at $49.99 so I'm thinking some deal-takers hopped on it before I could. I would have jumped but they didn't have any GGCs (they said they had been out since Christmas) so I needed to print my $5 off coupon.

I'm gonna be pissed if there's nothing left for me. All 6 EB/GS near me are out of Far Cry and Open Season as well.

Seeeing how "excited" people get over this deal, (which I took advantage of a couple weeks ago the day BB reduced these games, AND posted about it) makes me miss the late Rhino Video games even more, knowing I would have paid less than the 32 that I essentially paid for SPM...

...well... still got in on a good deal on Warioware Wii, essentially getting it for 50 cents through guide trades

LOL, someone traded you WarioWare for 50 guides? Bravo. :applause: I bet shipping even via media mail was probably murder though (unless it was an in-person trade).

All the best buys around me are sold out of both open season and far cry. Great deal though and hopefully best buy gets these games in stock soon. If not then I'll take a trip to circuit city and try the $20 gift card deal.
This is amazing. The NPD numbers on Far Cry and Open Season are going to be stupid high this month. Yay for Wii sequels!
then all we can do is hope that the sequels' prices drop too after no one buys them and that this deal resurfaces in the future! hah...

You may be "ripping EBGames off" for all of $10 on this transaction, but they'll make it up on the average trade-ins they'll get on this deal.

Just got back from a successful run getting Paper Mario including purchasing one of these turkey games -new- for $20 from EBGames (the other $15 at BB across the street). I straight up asked the manager "Is there any reason I couldn't buy this game and trade it with another to get the 2-for-1 Wii trade in promotion?" He checked the restrictions and tried to ring it into the computer and said, "Ok, no problem." In fact, he reminded me to make sure that I knew I'd better trade my games for a game worth $50, otherwise it "wouldn't be a good deal."

Great experience here, but may vary from store to store, manager to manager. If the manager is a jerk, in which case you need to find a better ebgames/gamestop ;-)

I went to the local EB and they said they were "short shipped" for Paper Mario Same with another Gamestop 15 min. away. I did the FarCry/Open Season trade, and since they were short shipped, he gave me a $49.99 gamebucks card. Essentially I made approx. 18.00 :D
except...won't you now have to pay tax on your future game purchase, rather than just doing an exchange?
yea, thats the downside to getting the value...but still a deal nonetheless

got my paper mario, woman was pissed off and she wrote all this info down on a receipt that had my eye color and hair color and all that other shit.

lmao

quick question, can you pricematch to circuit city or some other places with the $5 coupon as well and get those 2 games somewhere else for ~ $15, since best buy seem to be out in my area.

Well, I went over to BB today, armed with a $5 coupon and 2 $10 Reward zone certificated, prepared to pick up Paper Mario(it was easier in my opinion, to pay the $25 for PM and save the trip, rather than the trade in deal). Of course, BB didnt have Paper Mario(it was after 2, they said they were the only store in the district to not get it yet).

However, they did have Open Season and Far Cry, so I picked up those 2 for 16.24, went over the Gamestop, and traded them in, still sealed, for PM. So I got Mario for 16 bucks, not bad.
yea, thats the downside to getting the value...but still a deal nonetheless
when i bought guitar hero 2 for the 360 i didnt pay tax with store credit

I think I'm going to do this with Rayman and buy farcry or something. Rayman got old pretty fast but I'm still going to hold on to wario ware, zelda, trauma center, and monkey ball.

I was going to do this but none of the 5 best buys that are near me have the games. There must be a lot of pigs stocking up on these games...Bah gawd kang

Picked up SPM today no prob. When I asked if they'd do the deal for 2 copies of Far Cry (I don't think I can find any more copies of Open Season), however, they said no. I only asked at one store, though, and that store won't do penny guides either.

I was thinking about it and Far Cry for $14.99 is a pretty nice deal to begin with. Maybe I should pick up a copy to keep...? Need to check the reviews first.

If you can't even afford the Wii, think how much you'd be in the hole once you buy some games and a decent amount of accessories.
i wish i could afford a wii

I was thinking about it and Far Cry for $14.99 is a pretty nice deal to begin with. Maybe I should pick up a copy to keep...? Need to check the reviews first.
What everyone in this situation should ask themselves is whether FarCry is worth half of any game you could preorder right now with this deal: Mario Party 8, Pokemon Battle Revolution, NiGHTS, Sonic & Mario at the Olympics, or any other future Wii game via preorder transfers.

The answer, honestly, is "no."

So, I called my local Gamestop to see if they were still doing the trade 2 Wii games, get 1 free deal and they said no. I'm taking in a copy of the deal off of the Website so hopefully they will honor it. If not, I'll just be buying it at normal price.

Whew...just finished up my adventure with this deal. I had to go to two stores to unload my 2 copies of FC and OS (obtained via JR.com..woohoo!) because the first manager was a bit prickly about what I was "trying to pull" (I say this with sarcasm because if not for EB/GS's wonderful marketing and advertising of this promo, I wouldn't have been there in the first place. I love it when stores make you feel dirty for following the rules).

Anyway, I nabbed a copy of SPM, and went on my way to the next store and did the same. The clerk in the second GS cracked me up because when he scanned the two games and saw that they only ring up at $5, he said "That's funny. I'll have to check on this trade because these games only ring up $5 and I seriously doubt we'll give you a $50 game for them!" I calmly tell him that I printed out the promotion straight from their website, and checked the restrictions. I hand it to him, he reads, "Oh, I guess that's right." He rings up SPM (which I'll return to use as pre-order credit later), and tells me to have a nice day.

Funniest part about this story, GS #1, manager charges me sale tax (though, since no actual "sale" occurred, I think this was just to make himself feel better about the deal). GS #2, the clerk credited each game to offset the tax, leaving me with no extra monies due. *shrugs* Go figure!

Yeah, when you use trade-in credit, it covers the tax. Also, I have a similar story when I actually asked the guy if there were any used copies of Far Cry and Open Season, and he refused to sell them to me so that I could trade it in. I ended up saving money because I went to Best Buy and got the games for cheaper, then I traded them in at a different Gamestop.

WOW i am glad i bought and opened open season because this doesnt fucking work in san jose. EB games and gamestop both say "THAT EXPIRED 25th OF LAST MONTH"

fuck.

IMO Rayman > Moneky Ball
Why did you open it?
Because in my experience if you have it sealed the people at eb games will be stupid assholes (because they are) and will make up some bullshit excuse why you cant do a certain promo deal.

People at gamestop and ebgames both suck, its something you have to commit to even when you turn in your application.

Gotchaforce, can't you print out the offer from online and point out to them that it's good up until 4/15?

Thanks OP for posting this deal. I just got done running to Best Buy and then Gamestop. I had 2 GGC coupons and $10 in RZ certs, so it came out to around $20 for Super Paper Mario.

Also, the online stock tracker for Best Buy showed NO copies of Open Season in stock at my store and Far Cry isn't even listed on their site anymore. I figured I'd check anyway as I was at Best Buy to pick up an album and they had 2 copies of Open Season and about 10 of Far Cry.

The offer is online? Can you link me to it? Everyone is saying there is no 2 wii games get one free for 3/26 to 4/15, but if i can print it out online you will SAVE MY ASS!!!

Im looking for it not but now finding anything.

http://www.ebgames.com/gs/trade-ins/trade-ins.asp

this sort of says it, is there a better ad?

God i hate the people at gamestop/ebgames so much, i just wasted an hour going to different ones with all of them not knowing their own promotions. This is utterly ridiculous.
Why did you open it?
Yeah, actually, I was informed yesterday by the manager that it was their policy to NEVER accept sealed games (something to do with the possibility of them being stolen. Although, it's nice that EB/GS assumes that the only way someone would want to trade in sealed games is if they had stolen them..and not because they just got a great deal.) I had my games sealed out of the fear of them not taking them (thanks to the "new email" hoax. fuck you to whoever started that nonsense) Anyway, he wouldn't even let me open them in the store, just told me to come back another time, and he'd "try to forget". When I went in today, I offered to show him my receipt for the games to prove they weren't stolen. Suddenly, he felt apologetic.

Also, I really don't understand why certain employees have the attitude that you're physically and emotionally hurting them by taking advantage of a nationwide promotion. I've worked as a cashier at Wal-Mart before (yes, I'm still healing), and it's one thing for your register to be short, or to override a price for no reason, but if the company is offering a certain deal, you're not going to get in trouble for merely honoring it. We're not taking the money out of their pocket. Why do they get so offended?

Dude theyre working at gamestop and ebgames, do you expect them to be good at their jobs and even understand that there is no reason for them to feel like they need to make sure that the company isnt getting ripped off from their stupid deals?

Seriously wal-mart is pretty bad, but at least you know that you never worked at gamestop/ebgames. That is lower even than walmart on the "crappy retail store jobs"
