Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I guess fail0verflow wasn't joking when they said ouya's CPU is better than Wii U's Espresso CPU cause EA just announced Frostbite Go engine for mobile today.
In modern gaming machines the power comes much more from the GPU than the CPU, For example The GPU on the PS4 has about 18 times the processing power of it's CPU.
Move is a flop but Sony barely supported it. Kinect has been a monster. Yeah the games mostly suck but they've sold over 24 million of those things and it pretty much came down to good marketing.
a big factor in that is kinect can be used in other ways then gaming i know i don't play games on my kinect much but i do use it to control my xbox mostly when im using things like movie apps works pretty well and not have to use controller.

move and kinect will be getting major push on next gen systems. tues microsoft will get system and hardcore games out of the way and e3 both sony and microsoft will show off their new versions of move and kinect 2.0. I think the reason you no longer see move/kinect only games is that seems like they used those games to sell the products and now will just put features in most games instead of making games just for them.

This, both Move and Kinect did well enough that they will be packed/baked in with the next PS and Xbox. Game development for heavy Move/Kinect titles may have moved to those systems.
If people hated the Wii Control set up, why would they possibly want to use Kinect or Move?
Different people. Your average CoD fan is not necessarily a Dance Central fan, but both spend money with regular certainty.
Ok, so, its cool if xbox and sony does it but kiddy if nintendo does it?
Nintendo does nothing to cater to the fans of the massively multiplayer console titles (FPSs, Fighting, and Sports). Those fans have a certain mindset about what is and isnt mature/kiddy. Those fans are also vocal with "displeasure".

Nitnendo appears to be "cool" with their reputation, though they spin it as being generally family friendly and just fun. They normally succeed.

Though, when Nintendo has ventured into darker more adult areas the results were Eternal Darkness, Metroid (Prime), and Geist, so they seem to do alright when they have a concept that piques their interest.
Umm... Super Metroid is NOT up yet. Thanks for getting my hopes up for nothing.
It's up now. The new virtual console titles don't appear to be though.
If people hated the Wii Control set up, why would they possibly want to use Kinect or Move?
who hated wii control set up. i enjoyed the wii controller for party games which kinect/move only games are mostly for party games. i never used wii controller to play non party games other then 1st party nintendo games same goes with kinect and move. now i only use my kinect to control xbox apps like netflix

i will admit some things that has been talked about kinect 2.0 is pretty sweet like tech that allows it to put stuff on your walls. i just think kinect is more advanced tech then move and wii. the voice feature if used well can be great for games i loved using it with mass effect 3 and alot of other games that used voice stuf.

New eShop stuff doesn't appear until Thursdays. Sales can start whenever.

Thanks for the info. I'm enjoying playing Super Mario World on the gamepad so much that I'm eagerly awaiting some of these releases.

Link to the Past is a game I've never beaten (don't tell anyone, but I got stuck once and abandoned the game and never went back) and playing with suspend points is going to be awesome.
Nothing wrong with that move. Gotta protect your IP.
The issue here is that these people spend a lot of time, effort, and some money making these videos. They would like some payback from them but Nintendo is claiming ownership of the gameplay video. Nintendo OWNS your gameplay and the time it took you to make the video and they want the ad revenue generated from it. The more popular channels will probably stop working with Nintendo IP's if they can't get a couple of bucks after spending all day (or a couple days) playing a game and working on the video.

Either Nintendo is SUPER DESPERATE for money or they just don't give a fuck about their fans.

The only reason I'd ever watch those videos is because game trailers are terrible and I usually buy games after theyve been out a while, so there are usually gameplay videos on youtube.

I think Nintendo's usually pretty lenient about stuff like this (look at super mario crossover) and it's not a big deal. Youtube set up the system, and Nintendo is taking advantage of it.

I find it hard to believe that anyone "makes their living" from "let's play" videos alone. If they do, there's a bigger argument to be had about who owns what they're selling.

Who said people make a living with it?

The amount of teeth gnashing that is happening over the Let's Play videos is hilarious. Nintendo IS NOT having videos taken down, they are simply going after anyone who is attempting to make money with them. To me, that's a totally valid thing.

It's like the Rifftrax thing... if someone wants to market and make money off of their own commentary on a piece of media, that's fine. What isn't fine is using parts of the media that you don't own in your quest to make money. That's all Nintendo is trying to prevent. Nintendo could be way, way more dickish about this if they wanted to.

This is getting blown way out of proportion, but hey... internet, right? Sigh.

I was going to make the rifftrax comparison too, but I think it would be impossible to distribute a let's play without an attached video.

Your linked article from IGN and Zack on facebook, who made the initial complaint

Nintendo was cool with the kids in my area in 2006 everyone had a DS, then came the iPhone, iPad and iPod, Xbox 360 is the console for the cool kids, and all the cool kids and their friends play CoD. The 3DS is still somewhat cool, but Apple is king of cool now, they would rather play candy crush saga than Mario. As far as the Wii U, don't know anyone that has one or even wants one. Not sure where the ps3 fits into all this but it seems like also, no one has one. But as far as being cool with the kids, in my area, Nintendo is definitely NOT cool at all here!

Nintendo direct tomorrow at 7am pacific time. Focuses on Spring/Summer titles. Hopefully a couple of surprises.

I mean that they are "Ok" with their reputation as being "family friendly" if you are being tactful, or "kiddy" if you are not. Nintendo seemingly doesnt care at all about pursuing massively online games in any constant fashion.

Otherwise, I agree that Nintendo certainly isnt the fad it was in previous years, though I am curious to see what the new Pokemon game does for the 3DS.

I agree... the two mediums are different enough that it makes it difficult to do a video like that without showing a specific video of the person's experiences, but it was still the closest analog I could think of. That's why I feel like this is getting blown out of proportion, though... Nintendo isn't saying that you CAN'T do Let's Play videos, they're just saying that you have to play by their rules if you want to broadcast material they own the copyright to. I don't really see the problem with that.

fuck yeah. Given we really only know, uh, like 3 spring/summer titles for the Wii U, there has to be something worthwhile... right? Or, shit, even just release dates for things we do know about, like W101.

Excited.

Most likely the latter, though Nintendo has been known to announce and ship digital titles with zero notice.

Apparently Take 2 has announced that this years WWE game will only be on PS3 and 360, claiming that "Industry trends point to the Wii not being a viable platform anymore".

EA said they have no Wii U titles in development atm either. Though given their titles lately, I'm sure we will miss nothing...

Couple more things, looks like next week is Kirby Week on the VC:

Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby’s Dream Course, Kirby Super Star out on the North American Wii U eShop next week

May 16th, 2013 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii U eShop Three Kirby games are coming to the North American Wii U eShop next week. Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby’s Dream Course, and Kirby Super Star will all be available as Virtual Console downloads. You’ll be able to buy each for $7.99 starting on May 23.

And confirmation of a few big titles at E3:

Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Smash Bros. reconfirmed for E3

May 16th, 2013 Posted in 3DS, General Nintendo, News, Posted by Valay, Wii U I don’t think there was any doubt about this at this point, but yes: Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros. Zelda, and Smash Bros. will all be appearing at E3 next month. Nintendo reconfirmed the news in its NPD response today.
The excerpt states:
“At the upcoming E3 trade show in June in Los Angeles, Nintendo expects to show attendees upcoming Wii U games from the Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros. franchises.”
-I wouldn't be completely surprised if the Zelda title is the Wind Waker HD remake. If they are coming out with a big Mario game this holiday, they should hold off Zelda til at least next year. Hopefully other titles will easily fill in the gaps.

Yeah I would expect Zelda no sooner than next holiday if not holiday 2015. I'm hoping they release Smash this year but they'll probably hold off until next year and release Mario Kart and 3D Mario this holiday. If they released all three that would be fantastic since Pikmin 3 is also releasing this year.

Monster Hunter has been soaking up all of my free gaming time at the moment (almost at 200 hours) but you better believe I am hungry for some Wii U news. Can't wait for tomorrow, but I don't want to get my hopes up so I'll set my expectations low.

If Game & Wario is June 23rd, and Pikmin 3 is August 4th, I guess The Wonderful 101 is either Nintendo's July (hopefully) or September retail release. Then you've got the new 3D Mario, Wind Waker HD, and Mario Kart for October - November - December. Pretty nice lineup, especially if they can supplement it with a few good downloadable/VC games that the core Nintendo fans have been after like Earthbound. Maybe the Retro game in there too, who knows?

Lost worlds? not exactly ground breaking 50/50 on it being actually good hopefully better than that disgrace that is the secret rings

Crap, I want the physical copy of NSLB:U...but don't want to wait until August. (And I'm not double-dipping.)

Guess I will wait until August though.

Why is September a bad time to release Wonderful 101? Because of GTA? I'm pretty sure those are 2 very different audiences. Hell I'm bored with GTA I don't care about V and I can honestly say Lego City Undercover is more fun than the last few GTA games.

I don't get it either. Maybe because of Rayman Legends? Personally, I'd rather purchase W101 day one and Ubi can go screw.

I've already convinced myself to not get Rayman until it drops to the $10-20 range after the giant dickover Wii U owners got in February. Ubisoft can go choke on Rabbid dong.

I would prefer the physical copy too, but are they adding anything else to that? I read physical will be $30 vs digital's $20.

Sonic Lost World being exclusive to Wii U/3DS is really weird to me, considering Sonic CD, Sonic 4-2, Sonic Adventure 1/2 and Sonic Generations weren't on Wii, along with no mention of bringing those to Wii U.

I'm over the Ubi hate, but it had early this year to itself. Now it's going to be competing with a bunch of other stuff.
